National Gaming Day Combines Libraries And Video Games

What do video games have to do with books? Well, in this day and age, the two mediums are crossing paths more and more often. Game scripts are becoming more intricate and more professional, and with much of the world moving to digital information and entertainment, libraries have been forced to enter the 21st century via CD and DVD.

And now, to help cement the coming together of what used to be polar opposites, Saturday has been revealed as "National Gaming Day" at your local library. People can come and play against each other online, and they want to set the record for the most number of people playing a board game on the same day. Yeah, it includes both video and board games, but perhaps that's not an altogether bizarre collaboration, either. According to the announcement, the goals of this event are as follows:

  • Raise awareness about the use of games as a library program
  • Expose people to a new type of board game
  • Establish connections between local board game groups and the library

For more information, you can visit ILoveLibraries.com; there are a few FAQs on the page, although the avid gamer is probably well aware of the answers already. They're mostly geared to the uninitiated, so you get questions like, "Aren't video games just a passing fad?" Of course, to those close to the industry, you may as well ask if movies or music is a "passing fad," but too many people (especially those over the age of 40) still haven't grasped the reality. So anyway, if you've got kids or you simply want to see libraries and games finally coming together in harmony, stop over this Saturday and check it out.

Haha it never ceases to amaze me the arrogance of some people towards a culture they don't understand or know anything about.

How bizarre? And intriguing! Im glad that after me gaming for more than 20 years, society has started to accept us for the game freaks we are. Can't help but think this has more to do with young gamers entering into the market... And I cant believe Im saying this but, thank you lil gamers. This has been a long time coming.

Hey I work in a library sadly its not a public library its a government one but I'll support any library from my own gaming/music/dvd library to other libraries.
