Sony Issues LBP Moderation Policies

The big question concerning all LittleBigPlanet players is a fair one: exactly what can we do, and what can't we do? Recent erratic and unexplained moderation of levels including licensed content have ruffled a few feathers, so Sony has decided to re-issue the list of moderation policies, as obtained by CVG.

Now, this should give you a better idea as to what will be allowed in your ingeniously designed levels. The one thing you don't want to do is practice copyright infringement (instant moderation will occur), and of course, you have to avoid the disgusting and inappropriate. For the most part, these rules are logical and easy to understand, so there shouldn't be too many questions. Here's what Sony issued:

"The vast majority of content uploaded to date has been fun and suitable for all of our community members. In a very few cases we have upheld complaints regarding unsuitable content or infringement of intellectual property, with less than 0.5% of levels actively moderated as a result of complaints from other users.

Sony Computer Entertainment are committed to continually improving our moderation procedure and the methods of communication we use, in particular regarding the reasons that user complaints are upheld. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for all of our creators:"

  • Ensure that the content you share with other users is suitable for all ages - everybody has access to your level if you publish it.
  • Please respect other people's intellectual property rights. For example, don't use images, brands or logos that you're not entitled to use.
  • If you come across any content that you feel the need to report, then please do it responsibly. Hoax reports will be considered inappropriate behavior.

So there you have it. So long as you're not designing a level for Richter or a dominatrix scene for Lara Croft, you should be fine. For the most part, we'd have to assume that people aren't quickly leaping to use either inappropriate or licensed content...but then again, we like to assume the best in people.

Ah, guess that mean's goodbye to the GOW and Shadow of the Colossus levels eh? While the licensed stuff wasn't always the best, they were at least entertaining to play through - and the frustration for some of the authors of these levels are definitely understandable to see their work get scrapped entirely.

Though it seems a bit confusing that while we are not allowed to create what amounts to "tribute" levels, LBP continues to market "premium" costumes featuring other branded-IPs. Legally their allowed - since Sony/MM sought the rights and we have to pay for them - but it does nothing but to confuse people about the situation.

thats BS. its on the internet, If I want to make a obscene level I should be able to. Just like every other game case says. Online actions are not rated by ESRB. If you don't want to see it dont play it.

agreed in one aspect but disagreeable to the fact that MM and Sony want this to be a "accessible to anyone and everyone" game. while it is possible that any 7 year old can find all the free pornography in the world on the internet, the internet itself is not marketed toward everyone of all ages hell it really isnt marketed at all. this game on the other hand is targeting everyone so there has to be some level of restriction to the design process enabling sony and MM to have it be the "everyone" flagship

It is everyone. I thought that they were supposed to have more tags for levels, so you can say if it has nudity or offensive. And if you label the levels correctly then everybody wins. Oh well, I am still making my offensive levels, try and stop me Sony.

what exactly is the point of making offensive and vulgar levels in a game with such a broad spectrum of age in its users. It is like number one you know that children are going to see it and number two you just don't care. There are other games out there where you can make your own levels and those are not targeted at such a broad age range and you can put all the vulgar images in them you wish. Hell if you want you can break out the ol' PC and go to town with photoshop and design skins for whatever PC game you want to as vulgar as your little heart desires

Who goes to the park anymore? And why is that Shak? Kids wouldn't being playing the obscene level hence, there should be tags that are more descriptive. I still don't see what pervert has to with making lvls more controlled. But then I guess people like Shak is the reason why our rights to do what we want and and say what we want are slowly diminishing. Point said, Shak. go to H*ll

I may be wrong but I thought that the tags were for filing a complaint against a level when it was: a) offensive b) contained nudity, and the like. the tags are there to file complaints against inappropriate levels.

You want a game without restrictions and stuff. Go ahead and make it YOURSELF.

This is their product and as such they're allowed to moderate it as they see fit.

i'm gonna have to agree with pretty much everyone but the capt.

If mature levels are allowed and given a certain tag, people wouldn't be playing the levels because they're fun, they'd be playing to...well, "observe", for lack of a better term.

The whole reason for being able to post levels on the PSN is to try and make a level more fun than the devs did. This point is already missed with "GET 7 TROPHIES!" levels, but I digress...

again i reiterate, the point of the game is to have FUN. thats actually the reason i'm against IP based moderation, but again I digress. Adult levels aren't fun, they're just trashy and uninspired.

When you log into the Playstation Network and the LBP servers, you agree to behave properly to their rules. You can make how obscure levels you want but don't publish them or you might end up only being able to play offline.

I think Sony should work this out along with there ingame advertising..i mean if levels do have brand names or logos its only promoting it isnt it?? As for vulgar levels..if thats all some people can come up with then their imagination is obviously extremely limited.

I dont support vulgar/offensive stuff in a video game like this but would it be possible to lock certain created levels through password, like how television channels/program are blocked? I dont want little children to freely access a level full of offensive things.

I dont hve LBG (plan to get it though) so how does creating a level work? Like do they hve to be reviewed before being released to the world for everyone to play or what?

you stick you level up and if someone reports it, then it gets "moderated" (read: deleted)

there's no screening process, they rely on the community to report it.

Oh I see. Thnks. It looks like I hve to depend on the people. If thats the case then my little brothers might run into an inappropriate level by chance. I'll just review all the levels myself before I let them play.

I need to get back on and see what has disappeared. I don't find the tribute levels like Mirrors Edge and Shadows unoriginal in fact quite the opposite. I wouldn't know where to start to create one of those.

With too much moderation LBP is going to get drowned with levels which are just marginally different to those on the disc which will start to get boring.

I don't see a problem with making adult designed levels for your 18+ friends list.

Hmm, did PSN ask my age when I signed up? If it did then they could just block certain levels for the underlings. Problem is you'd need all kinds of regulation. I'm all for keeping the adult stuff away from the kiddies but banning tribute levels kind of destroys the whole concept of the game. Yeah yeah its not that original to do a mario level but fans ought to be able to express themselves with their fave series/movie/etc. The overwhelming majority of posts concerning this game pre-release consisted of people saying "Cant wait to make my (insert popular thing here) Level.

You can do tribute levels(they even give you God of War stickers/items so you can make tribute levels).

The levels they WON'T accept is CARBON copies of the games.

For example, they won't accept the first level of Super Mario World.

But they'll accept a level INSPIRED by the Mario games.
