NPD Oct. 08: PlayStation Sales Down, X360 Up, Software Sales Good

The newest NPD hardware numbers are out, and it a not so happy October for Sony all around. Sales of the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PSP decreased over September by a considerable amount. Where as the Xbox 360's sales saw an increase, and with absolutely not games in sight, the Nintendo Wii's sales have skyrocketed. The Nintendo DS, on the other hand, saw a sizable decrease. So what exactly is the breakdown? It's not pretty. None of Sony's units broke 200k sold, the PS3 took in 190k, the PSP moved just a few more at 193k, and the PS2 moved 136k, which is a feat considering the console's age.

Fueled by the release of Fable II, the Xbox 360 moved another 371k systems. But the Nintendo Wii has touched the clouds of heaven with 803k sold, fueled by absolutely nothing new, meanwhile the DS sold 491k. On the software front, Sony's Socom and LittleBigPlanet did very well: Socom sold 231k copies, and LittleBigPlanet managed an impressive 215k, considering it was on shelves for a mere four days before October ended. Fable II led the software charts with 790k sold, and the Xbox 360 version of Dead Space came in at tenth with 193k. Interestingly, Fallout 3 sold 375k for the Xbox 360, but the PS3 version didn't land the top 10.

Wrong. Multiplatform games sell better on the 360 simply because more people own that system (at least here in the US). That is the "obvious" explanation. This data in no way suggests that "people choose the 360 over the PS3 for their multiplatform needs". Most people only own one console, thus making their choice of which version to get rather simple.

I actually prefer to play multiplatform titles on my ps3, simply because the ps3 has a much greater life expectancy, since each game I play on the 360 brings it that much closer to RROD. So, I use the 360 sparingly, playing on it only the must-have exclusives. Regarding the price point of the 360, add an average of 180 for 3 years of Live, and another 100 for a wireless adapter, and you are already paying more for less. Naturally, the average consumer falls for such price marketing tricks, which is why I don't take sales numbers into account when making a purchase.

just on the opposite, it is pretty obvious that if a person has both consoles and the game available on both consoles, gamers will get the PS3 version, cuz its a better and more valuable copy with blue ray disc, simple as that.

I really don't think the increased 360 sales were "fueled by" Fable 2. I'm sure it provided a slight boost, but what is really driving the 360 over the PS3 right now is that the 360 has reached mass market price.

The PS3 is a better value, and a better system, but the average person will take the 360 because it's $100-$200 less than the cheapest PS3. The 360 Arcade is even cheaper than the Wii! Sure, serious gamers may dismiss the Arcade version, but the fact is it plays GTA IV, Madden 09, and Halo 3, and costs half as much as a PS3. That's an easy sale to Joe the sixpack plumber guy.

I've been saying it for a while now: if Sony doesn't cut the price soon, they're going to get their ass kicked. They can't allow the 360 to get a big lead in the mainstream market, which is exactly what is going to happen if this price gap continues.

I reckon Sony just needs to start advertising more. For example, almost of all of the GTAIV adverts said it was coming out on 360 and in a little box at the bottom it says "PS3".

Advertising like this implies to casual gamers that it is the better console.

The high increase of sales for the 360 is because of both its price and fable 2. Fable 2 is an excellent game, and I wish Ps3 had a game like it. Come to think of it, why doesn't the ps3 have more rpgs like it use to? Sony needs to get some first party rpgs out their, instead of more shooters.

I totally agree. thats exactly wut I want to say too. PS3 has nothing yet for RPGs, WKC and FF13 v13 are yet to come, and even that is not enough. All the developers need to hop onto PS3 to mass produce JRPGs like they used to do for PS2. Thats the key to the success of PS3, not so many shooters. Shooting has no fantasy, a few good grand shooters is enough, but a system defining game is always gonna be RPGs or Adventure games.

Talk to Square, Capcom, and Namco Bandai about that.

A issue during the PS2/XBox days was that the PS2 had no shooters and a lot of rpgs. The exact opposite was being said about the XBox - a lot of shooters but no rpgs.

So fast-forward to the next-gen and the roles are reversed. PS3 = more shooters, XBox = more RPGs. Ironic, isn't it?

Thats not true. I know people that just went and bought another Xbox360 because theirs broke down. They didn't want to deal with the 4 to 6 week wait time to play their 360 games. Plus they thought is was cheap enough to re-buy.

That is completely false Microsoft did not pay for my broken system (well my third one) they did pick up one and two but after I got the second back and it red ringed they said that a refurbished unit was not covered by a blanket warranty after 90 days. I pitched a fit with the guy on the phone and after 45 minutes of talking to various people they refused to budge so I bought another system from some kid that was gonna trade his in at the gamestop I used to work at

@Jed - No, people are buying them.

$200 is an awesome price. $399 isn't.

And I know that the PS3 at $399 is a good deal, but most people don't have that kind of money just to get a BluRay player added to their system.

If I was low on cash, and wanted to play all these awesome games coming out, I would buy a 360. Especially with Gears 2 coming out. The commercial for Gears 2 itself is better than the story in R2. (I kid of course...sorta)

We got reminded over and over how awesome the PS3 line up was towards the end of 2008, and while it has been good, I was a bit dissapointed. I don't think the 360 was too far behind.

They had Gears 2, Fable 2, Banjo, Left 4 Dead, Ninja Gaiden 2.

We had LBP which is awesome, Motorstorm 2, which is good, but nothing that is a must have (I prefer Pure myself), R2 which in my mind is fun, but I expected to be blown away by it, but I haven't been, and Socom, which had a horrible start.

And is one less game to care about if you're someone who prefers a single player campaign like myself, I don't have time for an online only game.

I dunno, does that make any sense? Before, I thought the PS3 line up was going to be better hands down, and while I still think it's better, just because nothing can beat the uniqueness of LBP, the 360 is not far behind. And if you take away my point of view on LBP (for those that arent blown away by it), I think you could argue that the 360's line up is better.

Perhaps, you are forgetting a couple titles worth mentioning, like, I don't know, a lesser known title like METAL GEAR SOLID 4! And if Motorstorm doesn't suit your racing needs, let's not forget sleeper hit titles like, Wipeout HD. And from what I hear, the milestone title, Gran Turismo 5 has been a long time coming, but is not far away, and is going to push a few ps3's, I imagine. And if racers aren't your thing, Sony's GOW3, safe to say, is not going to go unnoticed, either.

Fabi, u can argue anything if put your mind to it. But to say that the XBox line-up is not far off PS3?!....What?!

How can u count Banjo? That game has horrible reviews (Poor Rare). And Left 4 Dead is a PC game. That game looks half-assed on the 360. Which leaves the ARPG, Fable2 and the 3rdPS, Gears 2. That's a total of 2 noteworthy games.

I hear you on the whole "I prefer single player" thing. But Gears 2 single player is NOT its strong point. Neither is R2's. That's the popular trend we are seeing in gaming now.

@ King James- The whole point of this is that alot of people are going through hard times now, so the line-up of games dont matter because they cant afford to pay for those games. I bet that the people that bought a $200 Xbox 360 bought used old games.

Ps3 DOES have a huge line-up of games this fall compared to the 360, but that doesn't matter because people cant afford the price of a ps3. Thats why ps3's sales were not up this month.

Let us please note forget KILLZONE2... I have been playing the Beta and it is the BEST GAME I have played. I purchased CODV yesterday, whilst entertaining... the KILLZONE2 puts the COD series away nicely...

I'm sure they've done their best to bring down prices. So, I don't think it's a matter of Sony not being awake. Sony is in a critical shape, and resources are spread thin, but I've think despite that, they've done remarkably well, considering who they are up against.

i think sony no longer losing money on ps3, due to new RSX chips. blu-ray diods r atleast 10 times cheaper, HDD's r very cheap also. and i think that they could afford another price cut(well atleast 100$).
maybe this numbers will teach sony a big lesson.
Plus Sony need to start Advertising their Software. Sony commercials r pretty gay. R2 commercial for example. last years commercial was the best(Saliva).

People forget that PS3 started at $600. They already have made their price drops. Sony can not afford another drop so soon or they're gonna loose even more money per console. A price drop would have happened already if it was feasible. For what it's worth, they have the best bang for the buck in terms of hardware. In terms of software sales...let's be logical here. The buying habits of the 360 customer base show that they have the highest attach rate per console. It can only mean that they have the highest percentage of hardcore gamers. We all know that multiplatform games have generally been superior on the 360 over the PS3 because of better 3rd party support. Hardcore gamers for the most part are the most informed customers of a console. Hardcore gamers choose to buy a specific console because they know they can get the better version of a game they want. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I choose multiplatform games on the 360 over my PS3 because more often than not, they are better. It's not because the hardware is stronger, it's just 3rd parties focus their development on the 360. At the start of the year, the PS3 actually cut into the 360 userbase because of exlusives like MGS4. Since September, the 360 price drop, their more popular exclusives, and exclusive content on big multiplatform games have turned the tide again. Week in and week out the 360 is widening the gap again. Come February and March when the PS3 exclusives start coming out, look for Sony to make their move on the hardware side. Damn that was long!

With all the great titles that have come out lately for the PS3, and are still coming out, I don't see the 360 staying ahead for very long. It'll be interesting to see which one comes out on top for this holiday season but unfortunately I see Microsoft winning between the two simply because it has the cheaper option, not because the games are better. Sony has dominated this year with their game releases. And LBP should help push a lot of PS3s under the tree. It's already helped covert some of the Wii owners that I know lol.

If both consoles were launched at the same time ps3 would b way infront.360 had the games for 2007 but ur an absolute twat if u cant recognize that the ps3 has a better 08 and 09 line up of software not 2 mention everything else it has to offer. @ Mike56 yeah that used to b the case with multiplats but get with the times bud dead space, dmc4, burnout paradise, mirrors edge, bio shock, gta4 all performed BETTER on PS3

Oh boy the xbox fanboys are going to have a hayday in the forums with that info.

Maybe Sony needs to rethink the RPG stand point again. It worked for the PS2. The only one coming that's making buzz is FFXIII, and it's multiplatform...That's going to hurt Sony a bit. A lot of the games hyped for PS3 are FPS' and that's a pretty saturated market. Like Ben said in the legendary review, if you're going to put an installment for that genre you have to bring your "A" game.

I noticed a lot of you are mentioning games that aren't out yet and that's what's affecting the sales. This is the holiday shopping season though, Sony needs to have their big guns out now. M$ has a good number of Hyped games out right now and with a lower base price for a system, that gives them an edge. Ps3 has a lot of good games, but none of them are hyped up as much, and a few are "sleepers" which means the majority of people won't know about them. Which is too bad. The way things are looking, there's a good chance Sony will lose the Christmas sales battle, but we'll have to wait until next year when K2, and GT5 launch, and see what happens then.

Myself I'm sticking with Sony, I've never had a problem with any of their products, and I've seen from past experiences that they are slow to get started, but once they do, they do so well that there old systems are still competing with the new systems. Sony is looking at a ten year life span on the PS3, which we've all heard that that other systems just aren't able to do that.

So in the long wrong Sony is the better deal for me.

I've written it before and I'll write it again! Sony needs a price cut NOW!

Better value or not, if I want to play the multiplat games, and if money is tight, I'll buy the $199 360. I know the Arcade doesn't have a hard drive or wi-fi etc... but it does play the GAMES!

Besides, it's not like Sony can't afford to cut the price. Sony cannot afford NOT to cut the price at this point!

Witness Wal-Mart's PS3 sale last Saturday: Buy the $399 PS3, we'll give you a $100 gift card. That in itself tells you there is room for a price cut because Wal-Mart is not in the habit of losing money!

One more thing, with the price of stand-alone Blue Ray players now cheaper than the PS3, Sony is losing the "I'm purchasing a Blue Ray player, so I might as well get a video game console with it" sale.

Listen, I have all of the consoles, so I'm no fanboy; but even though I have an Xbox and a 360 to play the "Xclusives", there is something about the way M$ft conducts business (basically stealing every single idea [Windows, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, the Zune, Avatars, Replay TV, etc...]) that irks me. I don't mind owning the Xbox and 360, but I sure as hell don't want M$ft to dominate the industry.

Microsoft dominating an industry is just bad for everyone. Look at computers and realize how few legitimate choices the average consumer now has for an operating system, a browser, a media player, etc..., especially since everything is bundled in right out of the box.

You don't know how glad I was that TiVo won out over Replay TV and the PS2 over the Xbox.

You have no business sense, sony are doing very well in the end of ps3 fiscal year ending march 31st they will review the year and cut the price appropiatly UK:£239 NA:$299 top that with 45nm chip and grand turismo, god of war 3 plus all the other games there going to beat xbox 360 hands down.
Lets no forget price cut in japan 2009+final fantasy 13= win f**king win.

I think Sony is doing very well since the ps3 has only been out for 2 yrs now. I paid heck of alot more for my 20 GIG on launch day than what the price is now, plus people say it's more expensive than a blue ray dvd player i have no clue where that is coming from but i've seen blue ray dvd players in the stores and man their like 1,000 bucks how is that cheaper than a ps3? the price for the ps3 is i think perfect 399 for a 80gig plus you look at it you get what you pay for, blueray dvd player,wireless capability built in no need to buy a 100 buck wireless adapter,wireless controllers that do not need aa batteries, oh reliablity. I have had both consoles and gave up on the 360 after my 2 repair i was not going through that again, so when you think about it higher prices to me mean i'm paying for a reliable console, where as when i had a 360 it was in the repair shop more than in my house. I'm not a fangirl but when something you pay for can't last more than 1 yr without breaking down why would i want to continue that? Just my thoughts.
Oh and killzone 2 will do really well next yr i'm on the beta and man it's Awesome.

Just so you know, Sony Blurays are selling for 299 now. I saw one on sale for 279 at future shop last week. But, it doesn't play PS3 games..lol so I didn't bother...

I'm not surprised w/ the software numbers. Xbox360 dropped the price for the arcade and a number of "ignorant" consumers flocked to it. Not to mention, the 360 owners w/ a RROD that couldn't get their systems fixed. Most of them, just bought the arcade version, then added their hard drives & other accessories to them. Man, Microsoft is genius for that.

PS3 dropped all that software though, and in the end...that's what sales consoles. I can't wait to see those November sales. I know ppl that bought a PS3 just for Resistance 2.

And did y'all see those LBP numbers? That's crazy. 200k+ in four days? Wow! The Fallout thing doesn't surprise me though. During that time, part of PS Mag's review leaked and was blown out of proportion. It stated "...PS3 version is inferior visually to its 360 & PC counterparts". It made a lot of PS3 owners hesitant.

Still the price factor

ps3 sell more in the US when it releases huge games(or a string of huge games).

In Sept-Oct there weren't any huge games, so it shows that the price factor of both consoles came into play last month.

I sill don't understand how the ps3 costs $400.

I've been meaning to get me another ps3 so I could play online games with my bro, but since it costs so damn much I haven't been able to.

Bring it to down to $300 Sony!

Hurr I'm a Durr.

There are two main factors for picking one version over the other: graphics and controller. Oh and Trophies/Achievements.

Most people who own multi consoles will pick it up for the controller they like the best, unless there's a huge graphical discrepancy.

However, with trophies just starting and most games not having them right away, I pick mine up for the 360, because of that and I like that controller better.

I have picked up a few for the PS3 instead because they looked markably better on the PS3 or because I felt I needed to boot my PS3 up for more than just updates...

But if you go back and look at the numbers games sell more on the 360 because of a larger install base AND a higher software attach rate.

I picked up a ps3 for WipeOut HD. And I picked up a 360 for Ninja Gaiden 2. Other games like MGS4, GTA4, R2, GOW2 were just bonus. Bells and whistles like trophies are neat, but they had nothing to do with me getting a 360, or a ps3. Controllers are more of just a matter of what you get used, to. Do I actually prefer one system over the other? Yes. And it's why I come here, to this site, too.

of course the xbox 360 is selling more than ps3, look at the prices, $359 is the cheapest ps3 while xbox 360 is $199. Its amazing that the ps2 is still selling a lot, i guess its the parents that are buying the system right now, picking the cheaper console without caring what each platform does.
On the other note: There is a video on youtube that shows the durability of the PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii.

Consumer obviously don't know what they're buying into. They're looking at the 3 and opting to buy the cheapest around. They choose the 360 over PS3 due to the price, they don't look into it and see the overall value for each product, they haven't bothered to reveiw what games are coming out for both systems. If they were to do this, they would find that the PS3 is better value for money, by a big margin. And PS3 has way better games this year and for 2009.

Now it really becomes bad when we see so many buy a Wii based off absolute nothing but a cheap price tag. There's an even easier way to save money and that is not to buy a console at all. As owning a Wii is the same as owning nothing because neither have any games.
Going out spending 250 bucks on a white box only just to have switched off standing by your TV for months on end, thats crazy. Well I suppose many people will spend that amount on ornements and things and they do nothing.

I think I said this before but what the hell right? Most people are lazy, myself included, and this is the season where people just chill and get their xmas presents later. PS3 sales will pick up next month, no sweat.

With the fact that it IS the second most selling franchise in Playstation history without a doubt Gran Turismo 5 will sell ps3s like hot pancakes!

But again, Sony needs to look at the price of their console.

$400 freaking dollars is a lot compared to 360's $199-$299
