Wireless PS3 Keypad Pushed Back

During the Leipzig Games Convention back in August, Sony was good enough to unveil the new PSP-3000, the 160GB PlayStation 3, and the nifty accessory that's bound to help many a gamer: the wireless PS3 keypad, pictured here.

At the time, Sony said it would arrive by the end of November, but according to GameSpot, they're going to miss that estimated launch date. However, you won't have to wait long and the handy accessory will still be out for the holidays; Sony plans to make it available some time during the first week of December. If you're not quite familiar, the picture here will help: it simply snaps onto a Sixaxis or Dual Shock 3 controller and boasts a touch pad mode and even a mouse input. Not surprisingly, Sony reminds everyone that this peripheral will be extra useful to those who plan to toy around with PlayStation Home, where you'll want to quickly text-message your buddies. Also, if you don't have a regular wireless keyboard, this is the perfect accessory for you, as it's a hell of a lot easier than using the on-screen keyboard. That thing is clumsy and cumbersome; it takes a while to punch out a message with your controller. But with the PS3 keypad, all online communication should speed right up.

We'll bring you the full release details when they become available, and there's no need to take this off your holiday wish list. It's still coming...just a bit later, that's all.

Completely agree with you. I don't send enough messages to bother. I'll just use a keyboard instead. I never got into the text messaging thing. I either talk to people with the headset, or I hop on the computer and send a message. I know some people want this, but I'm not one of them.

It does look cool though, I'm just too busy killing to be spend time typing.

i wonder how many ppl are actually going to buy this thing when even a regular USB keyboard can be used with the PS3.

not being a fan of tiny keyboards, i'd certainly refrain from using it.

I absolutely hate the cell phone keypad text entry system the PS3 uses.

wife won't let me...I already have too many electronics in the living room.

I think I use 4Kw/hr on electronics and rechargeable batteries in that room alone.

@ HUSO

Click on the key-pad icon button on the bottom left side of the on screen keyboard and it will change from Querty to Cellphone keyboard.

Sure would be nice to have at least. Especially on the web browser.

I personally can't wait for this! It will get the most use out of me when I play Hot Shots. I'm always chatting it up with people on there and this will definitely help. Glad the delay is only a week or so... was worried there for a sec. =)

I always just use the predictive text input on the PS3. For those that don't know, you can change the keyboard to be compact and similar to that of a cellphone. I always use predictive text on my cell anyways, so i was very glad that they included it in one of the early firmware updates.

Does anyone remember the text entry system in killzone 1? it had the eight squares that you chose from with the left stick by pressing in one of the eight directions, and each box had a letter/number that corresponded with one of the four face buttons. I think it worked really well and fast once you figured it out and think it should be given another shot. On the other hand, it did confuse my friend into naming himself "jdpofm" and he has run with it since, and bluetooth keyboards like my dinovio edge are working fine for me.

Hopefully this will be good enough to compete with the 360 version

I've had this pre-ordered for 2 months now already. Amazon let me know about the push back earlier in the week. For them, they won't have it until 12/18. I do alot of pm'ing on the PSN, at least 10 a day. Home has voice chat that works while your in the vicinty of other people so I don't think I'll use it as much with that

I have the one for 360 and it's pretty convenient. I don't want another piece of hardware around my remotes and game controllers. Something small and compact that attaches to the Dualshock3 would be perfect. I would get this but is it really gonna be $50? For comaparison, the 360 keypad was $30 and came with a free headset. I hope they lower the price when it launches.

I am looking forward to it, it's hard to type on a keyboard especially when my son gets a hold of it or wants to type on the keyboard when i'm trying to do something this way it's out of the way it'll just make it a lot easier.

Not for nothing but my wife watches me type on that virtual keyboard and she is completely amazed. Makes me feel really geeky.

When you know exactly how long to hold down the d-pad arrow to get to the other side of the screen and stop on the letter you want..you know you been typing on that damn thing too long.
