Killzone 2 Beta Is Unbelievable, But We Have Something Better...

Okay, here's the deal- we are in the Killzone 2 beta and our conclusion thus far is relatively simple and straightforward.

It's this beta that is quickly proving to gamers that Guerilla isn't fooling around. They're not spending a truckload of money to develop and hype a project that will ultimately disappoint. We have determined that in recent interviews, the developers appear to be supremely confident in the quality of their forthcoming FPS...and we now know why. It didn't take long for us to understand exactly why Guerilla was so confident, and why every last PlayStation 3 owner on the planet should be pumped. Hell, we won't discriminate; every video game everywhere should be pumped; the PS3 is a worthy purchase for this one game. Our full beta impressions are forthcoming, but we want more time with this bad boy before we start to gush. Let's just say that if you're not in the beta, you're seriously missing out, and if you are, than you fully comprehend the previous words in this update. We've heard nothing but great things so far, and pretty soon, we'll tell you why it's impossible to find a lot of negative feedback on this beta test.

And one last thing: we currently have something better than the Killzone 2 beta. It's still Killzone 2, but we're not allowed to talk about it until December 4...so we won't. In the meantime, we suggest you keep it here, 'cuz you won't want to miss what we have to say next month. Oh no...no, you won't want to miss that.

already the MP has blown away all FPSes till date

THE SP mode will just embarrass other shooters out there

expect KZ2 to get 10/10 from all websites.

I am in the MP beta and it looks and plays way better than anything out there

Welcome to the club Ben :)

It is and will be the best FPS to grace the PS3, and to some extend goes to finally show what the hardware can do... I feel we will see more to come... This will be an experience most people will not forget about for a long time... whilst I wait I enjoy COD V :)

Is this game better than any FPS shooter that you've played Arnold? I'm getting very geeked about this game. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't buy another FPS until Killzone 2. Is it worth it Ben or Arnold???

Sounds like the fortunate staff of psxextreme have landed themselves a prebuild copy? Based on their (and Qubex's) highly reliable evaluation, my initial impression seems to have been debunked. I thought after all this time, and hype, no game could live up to such expectations. Yet, at the same time, no project would last this long if it did not get continued encouragement and positive impressions from the inside. Sweet...

Thanks Aftab, I think you will be pleasantly surprised... If you like your FPS's then you will go bananas over Killzone 2.

One additional point to make... some of you may have and remember about the size requirements for Killzone 2, in the order of 50 gig, or a blu ray disk filled to the hilt.

The reason being muted back then was that Killzone 2 was using advanced texture streaming technology, with each level apparently topping 2 gigabytes in size. They stressed then that a console, like the 360 would find it difficult, if impossible to do similar with out a blu ray capabilities...

Well, as the Beta is a single download, and from what I can see, there is no real-time "texture streaming" going on, I can only assume, as with other multi-player shooters, such as the COD series; the single player campaign in Killzone 2 will look even better than the Beta multi player... In COD III and COD IV I noticed there was a better quality visual with regards to the on screen effects. In Killzone 2 I suspect better quality texturing and more post processing going on during single campaigns over multi-player.

So whilst the graphics are extra-ordinary on the Beta multi-player, with full screen AA and moody lighting, I expect to see more eye candy during the actual campaign modes... there I think you will see the engine truly come into its own...

By any chance, was that "texture-streaming" tech the same tech utilized in Drake's Uncharted Fortune? That, by far, is the prettiest game I've seen, eclipsing both Gears 1 & 2. If that is even a partial indication of KZ2, I'm excited.

yep the final version of MP would look 2x as good
since the BETA doesnt have "texture streaming" applied to it

the beta is just 400 Mb and has half the textures as the full game. even despite that it looks better than all games ever released on any console /PC

holy shat! its a ps3 exclusive. oh man xbox is officially off life suport. gears of war and halo were the worst exclusive titles ever along with resistance for ps3 of course, but i just read some stuff on killzone and damn that game looks sweet! what engine are they using. lets hope its not the resistance engine and more along the lines of call of duty with ragdoll physics, then we are set.

Although I cannot speak for Halo, as I didn't play much of it except for the first, and some skirmishes of the third, I can say that I enjoyed and was impressed by both Gears and Resistance. Perhaps you are a pc gamer. I am not, nor was I too much of a shooter fan. But those games "converted" me. I look foward to Killzone 2 because of those games.

Wait.. the best thing that could happen to Killzone 2 around December 4th that isn't related to the games release in any way would be.. a demo that has some single player campaign previews and a full public beta for every PS3 gamer. Yayyy!

yes rikyfree we all know u know... care to shed some light? once again i hope there aint no zombies or gay "chamera" in this game. hopefully its all realistic warfare. and ps3 just looks cool as hell under my lcd screen. blue ray alone is enough to buy and oh u can play games on it and browse the internet and oh oh u can use a printer with it and it comes with wi-fi and its all bluetooth and ummm u dont have to pay to play online and playstation store has movies and shows to buy and rent and its 80gig and the list goes on and on so good games are just a little cherry on top. ps3 is an amazing piece of technology at an unbeatable price. too cool..

SHIT, I'm living in The Netherlands (that's where Guerrilla lives also). Doesn't have the beta. Everyone who says there are no quality games on de PS3 : LBP (awesome), Ratchet & Clank (+ downloadable content), Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Resistance 2, The Last Guy (online download, buy it!). I just put a bigger harddrive (so easy to do) in it (320 GB). Ready for years to come (Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank follow-up, Uncharted 2, GT5, don't forget the people from Team ICO)

People are saying around the Internet that the full game has been sent out to reviewers. Right after Resistance 2. But they can't say anything before December 4th. It would be great if the game hit shelvs before Christmas! Or if the game is finished, give the developers time to make it perfect before feb.

Killzone 2 can be displayed in high definition 720p, locked at 30 frames per second.

I can't wait to get this game is gonna destroy the competition this is the FPS the entire universe has been dying to get Halo Gears of War those are no match for this. Sony has unleash a WAR against Microsoft and Nintendo by making the most beautiful games and the best graphics. Killzone 2 is gonna get at least a 95 or above on Metacritic.

KZ2 is definately amazing, i've never seen a game with graphics like that in my life, it looks like 1 mega cutscene but it's not :O

draw killzone 2 on a piece of paper, make it look like the official cover art, and nail it to your ps3.

this game is amazing, even for the beta. and i think the graphics are in low resolution cuse they compressed the beta to fit THREE maps in.

I will be confused if this gets anything less than 11/10. Hopefully 15/10? I told my 360 owning friend that he would end up buying a PS3 the day after KZ2 comes out (when I show him how awesome it is). BTW how do you get into the beta?

On this other gaming site, they say the North America release date is 2/17/09 or 17/2/09 for UK.

yo this is my 1st time posting,but I've been reading psx for like 6months,it's a great read for me every week.so i decided to register.I'm not a fan boy,I'm a fan of games,i have both the 360 and ps triple and i love them both.with that said,kz2 is looking like it well indeed live up to the hype and then some,the controls look tight,the scenarios look tense,and the graphics,well are simply beautiful,the best of any console period.

Im in the beta and it is as good as you say,but i think i can guess what it is that is coming on the 4th December,it wouldn't be a demo would it? lol.

I'm confused about the supposedly awesome graphics in the beta as I wasn't at all impressed with the graphics. I felt R2 and several older games have better graphics than KZ2 beta. Is there some kind of reduction in graphics depending on your internet speed or something (coz Comcast isn't the best in that regard!)? I'm seeing all these awesome screenshots of the beta online but nothing like it when I play it. The gameplay itself is awesome - very COD4-like, I'm just confused on the graphics front.
