Spike TV Video Game Awards 2008: List Of Nominees

In the past, the Spike TV Video Game Awards has been the target of much mockery among gamers. The awards have often catered only to the casual; handing out nominations to titles that are merely popular and not necessarily fantastic. But this year, even Spike can't screw up the obvious selections.

The fifth annual Video Game Awards airs on December 14, and a judge over at GiantBomb has revealed the full list of nominations for each category. As anyone would expect, the Game of the Year nominees are Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, and Grand Theft Auto IV. The Best Shooter category features Far Cry 2, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, and a small surprise in the recently released Left 4 Dead (I'd call that survival/horror, but whatever). We have to agree with the Best Action/Adventure nominees, though: Grand Theft Auto IV, Dead Space, LittleBigPlanet, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. You can check out all the nominees if you visit the link above, and feel free to tell us where they messed up and where they're honoring the correct titles. Honestly, with a clear set of about 6-8 titles that are head-and-shoulders above everything else, it's tough to nominate junk.

The only part that's kinda odd is the inclusion of Grand Theft Auto IV in the individual console categories. It's nominated for both "Best Xbox 360 Game" and "Best PlayStation 3 Game." But Fallout 3 is also under the 360 category...to us, this only proves that besides Fable II, there wasn't another 360 exclusive of note in 2008. That's exactly say why analysts and journalists have said this year is the year of the PS3...

They really can't. It's just a time issue.

Where can I vote? I have played almost all of those games. Do they want gamers input or are they just going by sales numbers, or something else?

Tomb Raider: Underworld is on there, and it hasn't even released yet. Naruto: The Broken Bond (XBox exclusive) is on there, and it doesn't release until...today. Yet, Naruto Ultimate Ninja: Storm (PS3 exclusive) which released earlier this month, didn't make the list.

But, I guess the got copies early for judging. Still, they could stick to games that have been available for a minute.

I dunno. Haven't seen any reputable reviews of Broken Bond. I do know that Broken Bond has online play, but Storm doesn't. :(

From the trailers, the look pretty similar. I would say that Storm looks a little better.

I haven't tried Gears 2's multi-player, but I heard it's very good. I've got my issues with R2. I hate that I can only level up one class at a time, even if I'm playing with a friend, EVEN if it's offline. So, if we're playing medic and spec ops, and we both level up to 5, when we quit and come back, one of those level 5s is gone. That kinda blows. And I get frequent disconnects playing R2.

Interesting...I've never got disconnected. But Troy, why u trying to cheat the RPG system? U no Insomniac wasn't gonna have that.

Gears2 multi-player is good...very good. But it's horde mode can't stack up w/ R2's co-op and it's competitive multi-player can't match R2's 60player skirmish. (In my opinion)

I don't see why it would be cheating. I mean someone DID play and earned the XP. I mean, if we play the co-op mode for 5 hours, and soon as we turn the game off, he loses all the xp he earned and has to start from square one the next time...who would want to continue playing like that? What's the point of having an offline co-op mode then?

Cheat is a strong word (maybe I should've used something else) but Troy, if there was a way for you and me to sign into our PSN accounts and play co-op on the same PS3 account, then yea it should be a way to keep the stats. But if my friend comes over (who doesn't have an PSN) and lvls up MY soldier from 1 to 10 while I play as MY medic. I should keep the medic stats(what I did) and not the soldier stats(what I didn't do).

I keep what I did, not what some1 else did. You get what I'm saying?

Well, that's fine for a one-player game, or an RPG, but the offline co-op is supposed to be a two-player game. If one of those players has to start at square one every time, what could be the possible motivation to play it? The off-line co-op mode is pretty much pointless.

Besides, does anybody in the world actually care if I leveled up my character or if my friend did it?

I dunno. Just, when I think fighting game, I guess I think of your more traditional fighter. Soul Calibur, Tekken, Street Fighter, etc. Like I said, they are clearly fighting, but I just never considered it a fighter.

I'm with Mr. Powers on this one. I've never considered Smash Bros to be included in the Fighting genre. It's more of an action/party title cross-bred with a fighting game.

MGS4 or Fallout 3 should win game of the year. LBP innovation of the year( or something similar). I realy dont think GTA4 deserves any awards.I dislike alot in that game.I know some peole think its great but imo it is just so repetitive and lacks style.

I'm also hoping GTA4 doesn't win any awards this year. Maybe then this will show R* that they need to fix something. Maybe go back to the original arcady type of gameplay that we all know and love?

MGS4, R2, Fable 2, and one of the following should be contenders.

just cuz someone doesn't own a 360 as well doesn't mean theyre a fanboy. there's lots of people who simply can't afford another system, or would rather take the $300 and invest it in an extensive library.

@king james - If it doesn't, then it's because Gears 2 graphics were better.

I personally haven't played G2, but it sure looks better graphically in all those videos and screenshots I've seen.

Someone who's played both, which is better?

My List of Winners:
Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto IV
Studio of the Year: Media Molecule
Best Shooter: Resistance 2 (though kind of close with Gears 2, awesome Horde mode)
Best RPG: Fallout 3
Best Fighting Game: Soul Calibur 4
Best Individual Sports Game: I think Wii Fit will win, its quite fun but not a sport game.
Best Handheld Game: God of War: Chains of Olympus
Best Graphics: Kind of split between all these games though believe MGS 4 will come out on top
Best Game Based on a Movie or a TV Show: Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (i dont know whatever)
Best Music Game: Guitar Hero World Tour
Best Driving Game: Mario Kart Wii
Best Action Adventure Game: I want to give it to Dead Space, but I believe its either GTA4 or MGS4
Best Team Sports Game: I want to say FIFA, but this year was NHL 09 being more innovative
Best Soundtrack: This is split between Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour
Best Xbox 360 Game: Gears of War 2, no question about it
Best Wii Game: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though Wii Fit is not too far behind
Best PS3 Game: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, tis' the year of the PS3, too many good games
Best PC Game: I'll give it to Spore, why not though why not include Football Manager 09.
Best Original Score: This is split between Little Big Planet and Metal Gears Solid 4
Best Multiplayer Game: Gears of War 2 - simply because its has Horde mode and works offline a lot better than Resistance 2
Big Name In The Game (Male): David Hayter, he deserves it, though Stephen Fry is a close contender
Big Name In The Game (Female): its either Paula Tiso or Debi Mae West, both long time pros in the industry
Best Independent Game (Fueled By Dew): Audiosurf all the way, what a trippy game

Wow, I play too much games. I love Little Big Planet, Fallout 3 and Dead Space but I believe these two won't win as much as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4!

best shooter: R2
best adventure game: LBP

P.s Ive loved the GTA series, and as a true gamer I will point out the obvious. This game was by far the worst GTA to come out. In no way can you even say this game was up to par with GTA San Andreas. GOY? its more like the disappointment of the year.
