World At War Outsells Modern Warfare 2:1 In UK During First Week

Call of Duty: World at War turned out to be an excellent effort (although just shy of last year's stellar Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), and gamers in the UK have certainly taken notice.

According to the latest results as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, this year's CoD title outsold last year's during its debut week by an astounding 2:1 ratio. World at War topped the "All Formats" sales charts, and although we don't have actual numbers, it's still very interesting news. Other games of note on the list: the recently released World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion is now the fastest-selling PC title in the UK (it came in at #2), and Football Manager 09, Gears of War 2, FIFA 09, and Guitar Hero: World Tour comprise spots 3-6. But we can't wait to see what the sales numbers are for World at War, because at this rate, the game will ultimately outsell Modern Warfare in the UK. It does stand to reason that many more gamers have either a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 this year, so perhaps the 2:1 ratio isn't quite so surprising. But it's certainly added proof that Treyarch's effort really is worthy of your time.

Fans of the franchise adored CoD4 last holiday season, and thanks to the continued efforts of Activision and the two tag-team studios, they can have a blast with yet another CoD title in 2008.

"debut week" guys. Modern Warfare was a new experience that people didn't expect to be so great right off the bat. this one, being its successor and hyped as practically the same game in a different era, has higher expectations upon release than MW had on its release.

the reason for this is no socom til, well next yr now, and no R2 til 28th of nov so weve all had to buy Cod5 to keep us goin til R2 drops, and even then with it droppin at the end of the month, i kno ppl r buying cod5, then gettin R2 for christmas, well at least thats what my G/F's getting me lol

CoD5 is better imo than Cod4 by a long shot.. seems taht a lot of people agree, maybe you have to play it for a while to love it.. but it is amazingly good fun.

theres more to play in solo, theres more to collect in multiplayer, maps are brilliant, classes and ranks are great and bigger... and you have nazi zombies! what else do you want?

people who are banging on about how MW is better ..thats fine, up to them. but imo CoD5>CoD4.

also what Cavan said is true.. no Socom and no R2 makes a CoD5 a very happy puppy.

Yeah it's just because Call of Duty wasn't as big last year as it is now. MW set the stage for WaW.

COD5 is a pretty good game that any shooter fan should play. I was totally against the COD franchise going back to WWII but now that I've played it, this is the BEST WWII game I have ever played.

I don't know that it beats COD4 but I enjoyed it just as much.

This is good for activision. I think killzone 2 can sell better but we all know sony can't advertise there games which is a shame.

Well it's not suprising to be honest. When CoD4 started not everyone was hyped about it because treyarchs previous game was of a lower standard so nobody expected much.

Its sales rose once the word spread about how good it was.

The difference here is that CoD5 had MW's reputation to boost it's "must buy it on release!!" factor. It will be the sales after 8 months that will tell us which is the more successful title.

I still say MW is better over all btw. I had alot more fun in the single player and standard multiplayer. The only thing that's better here is the Co-op and zombie mode. That's all.

I find cod4 just to easy theres to many smgs and mgs, its just to easy to pick up and play and be good.

take cod5, its much more orientated around the more skilled player with bolt action rifles and what not

vehicles are also a biggie fair enough its just tanks but cod 6 will also feacture vehicles im thinking possably hummers and APCs would be ace

Yeah...I hate the Mg+Juggernaut goons. I pick those out on purpose. They tend to feast on the noobs...Its hard to keep the fight clean I suppose...Ugh and those Grenade Launching m*sturb*tion parties...Grrrr

and this is why killzone is out in Feb... it might be ready now, but it would have to compete with all the other shooters. imo that is what killed UT3..

anyway, im on my 2nd prestige with CoD4, and am thankful for the change!!

I don't think Waw has gotten enough praise. I love everything about it. Single player is excellent, zombie mode a winner, trophies are a challenge, on-line maps and play are also fantastic. If you're not playing you're missing out.

I think the reason I like WaW better then Modern warfare is because I always loved the history with WW2 I like the older guns and just the enviorments overall.I liked modern warfare ,but I just get a bigger kick out of WW2 I guess.

imo W@W's story is better than CoD4's ..at first I wasnt happy about CoD5 (before it came out)and I hated WWII games apart from one of the MoH games (the one with the beach landing.. whoa!)... W@W solo blew me away.

Well I'd say 95% of COD4 owners bought COD5 and if you include the Wii, PS2 and DS versions you've got a whole lot of copies sold there...

IMO COD5 is no where near COD4 online wise. Maps are good, but not COD4 good. Same goes with weapons, perks and classes. All the new stuff they've added is pointless. I see myself using the EXACT same classes as I did in COD4.

However, the single player is much better. I think it's because of the length and the fact that the AI is no longer semi-retarded.
