Sony: Trophies Required For All PlayStation 3 Titles In 2009
It was probably only a matter of time, but it may come as news to some developers. So if you industry guys aren't aware, you had best prepare Trophies for your new PlayStation 3 game. It's gonna be a rule.
According to VideoGamer.com, an anonymous inside source has revealed that, starting January 2009, it will be mandatory for game designers to support Trophies for any PS3 title they wish to produce. SCEE recently confirmed the tip, saying- "Yes, from Jan 09 all games must have Trophies." Thus far, only certain PS3 games have launched with Trophy support, and when the system first became available via firmware update this past summer, PS3 owners complained about an initial lack of support. Well, now you won't have to worry. Sony is essentially forcing developers to support Trophies, so come next year, it won't even be a question anymore. Thankfully, this means we've pushed past the awkward phase where Trophies for particular games wouldn't become available until well after the title's launch. Because most all Trophies aren't retroactive, they required that you play through the game again if you wanted to nab the new Trophies. Sure, certain titles are well worth playing again, but it could still get very annoying.
But no more saying, "yeah well, I'm going to wait to play it until they release the Trophy patch." No more patches or updates; Trophies are coming with the game, or the game doesn't release at all. Plain and simple.

Trophies are a defenite plus. They give an extra challenge to the players. It's fine if you don't like it... but developers sure as hell ant tellin us how to play the game through trophies, Lol...

The bottom line is that neither system is perfect. Sony has a crappy marketing strategy, and gets shafted on game quality because most developers are programing for the X-box first. X-box has RROD syndrome. Personally, I've seen too many 360's fry to even consider buying one, and though the PS3 is flawed, they are making it better every day. Count that with the reliability factor, and Sony gets my support over Xbox any day.
Do I have Multiplatforms? No. Can I afford to? Yes. Do i want to waste my money buying an X-box to play a few exclusives that might interest me? Nope, I'm putting a 500gb harddrive in my PS3 instead, so it will have room for all the great stuff I'll be loading onto it in the next 8 years.
As for the whole trophy/achievement debate. Who cares who made it first? This whole industry is made off of finding what the competition is doing and making it better. That's called competition and it means that with a better product, we the consumer reap the rewards. Atari improved on Coleco, Nintendo improved on Atari, Sega tried to improve on Nintendo, Sony improved on Sega and Nintendo, X-box tried to improve on all of them...Now here were are, all of them ripping each other off, trying for their share of the market. And right now, I'd rather play a slightly flawed version of Fallout 3 instead of digging out the paddles to play Pong again...although pong is pretty fun....

Trophies are great when they're done properly. But things that are forced aren't always done so properly.

i was playing through gta4 again and was about 15 missions down when the patch came and it said i have to start a new game for trophies.
even if i complete a required task on this old save i dont get a trophy .i think it should be based on gameplay and not a new game altogether .

That being said, I've been playing Eye Of Judgment a lot lately and am enjoying it a lot more, and that's mostly to the fact that I'm trying to get the trophies.

How about we get something innovative soon? You know aside from all the other innovations in the PS3 like Six-Axis. Oh wait...
In all seriousness tho, it's about damn time. I'm tired of tellin all my friends the cool things I've done in my PS3 games. Now I can just show them the achievements -- I mean trophies.

Seriously, as neat an idea as they are, Trophies and Achievements are pointless and they corrupt the gaming experience. No longer are games played for fun, rather they are "worked on" by insecure nerds desperately seeking a faux sense of accomplishment and ego inflation. I read a user-review of Valkyria Chronciles and the reviewer docked the game half a point because it had no trophies. HALF A POINT!
Until my Trophies get me something tangible (bonus content, spendable store points, etc), I'm never going to go out of my way to get them.

My friends and I really use achievements -- I mean trophies -- the way intended. We compare games (we know how good a game is based on how many achievements -- I mean trophies -- our friend has unlocked), we use it to rub a little extra salt in during the trash talk, things like that.
But I'm not going to respect some random guy on the internet just cuz he has more achievements -- I mean trophies -- than I do.

This is not a major issue at all... I don't think the devs are just going to drop all their plans, or lower the quality of games, just over a few trophies... Thats like saying you could make a whole sundae icecream and sell it for $50, but you don't want to add the cherry on top so you just rather not make it... That makes no sense!!! $50 is a whole new game! +10! lol
