Sony: Trophies Required For All PlayStation 3 Titles In 2009

It was probably only a matter of time, but it may come as news to some developers. So if you industry guys aren't aware, you had best prepare Trophies for your new PlayStation 3 game. It's gonna be a rule.

According to VideoGamer.com, an anonymous inside source has revealed that, starting January 2009, it will be mandatory for game designers to support Trophies for any PS3 title they wish to produce. SCEE recently confirmed the tip, saying- "Yes, from Jan 09 all games must have Trophies." Thus far, only certain PS3 games have launched with Trophy support, and when the system first became available via firmware update this past summer, PS3 owners complained about an initial lack of support. Well, now you won't have to worry. Sony is essentially forcing developers to support Trophies, so come next year, it won't even be a question anymore. Thankfully, this means we've pushed past the awkward phase where Trophies for particular games wouldn't become available until well after the title's launch. Because most all Trophies aren't retroactive, they required that you play through the game again if you wanted to nab the new Trophies. Sure, certain titles are well worth playing again, but it could still get very annoying.

But no more saying, "yeah well, I'm going to wait to play it until they release the Trophy patch." No more patches or updates; Trophies are coming with the game, or the game doesn't release at all. Plain and simple.

This could means that you will get a trophy for pressing the "o" button, or a reward for simply switching on the ruddy console to begin with...

This is a great example of Sony making an intelligent business decision. I remember feeling absolutely puzzled when Sony said that trophies wouldn't be mandatory a while back. Trophies are absolutely awesome.

Keep up the good work, Sony!

Hasn't turned anybody off to the 360 so far. I don't think it'll be anything more than a minor headache for developers, if that much.

I don't think it will turn developers off, really.
If they use 2-3 (or more) years to develop a game I think it will be that big a problem throwing some trophies onto the disk too. . (:

Having trophies still isn't going to affect the way I play or influence me to buy certain games. To me they are just a gimmick. I saw that Little Big Planet had a trophy file on my system so I just deleted it. Some people love them which is all good, but I'm sure there are others out there who just don't want to be bothered with them. Plus in a way, it feels like the developers are telling you how to play a game in a certain aspect, and not giving you the freedom to do as you wish. Just my opinion though lol.

... Trophies are more like challenges... When the X360 brought up the achievements, you get rewarded by "Achieving" something. With the PS3 Trophies, you are getting a trophy for "Completing" Something, kind of like the olympics. I, in no way, see how this could be a guidline on how to play the game.

Trophies are a defenite plus. They give an extra challenge to the players. It's fine if you don't like it... but developers sure as hell ant tellin us how to play the game through trophies, Lol...

I don't think this will be too much of a big deal I mean achievements have been mandatory for games since the inception of 360 and no one really gives a flying rats a**. I think the trophies will mirror the achievements and that is a bit lame but oh well at least it gives you a little something to shoot for and adds a bit of replay value to those games you would otherwise never give a second glance. Well, maybe not the games that totally suck but you get the picture.

Yeah we've already discussed in here before how Sony seems to get shafted on quality of the MultiPlats. Brings about some pretty heated debates sometimes, which looks like what you're trying to start. You're have multi platforms, but say you prefer X-Box..Kudos for you.

The bottom line is that neither system is perfect. Sony has a crappy marketing strategy, and gets shafted on game quality because most developers are programing for the X-box first. X-box has RROD syndrome. Personally, I've seen too many 360's fry to even consider buying one, and though the PS3 is flawed, they are making it better every day. Count that with the reliability factor, and Sony gets my support over Xbox any day.

Do I have Multiplatforms? No. Can I afford to? Yes. Do i want to waste my money buying an X-box to play a few exclusives that might interest me? Nope, I'm putting a 500gb harddrive in my PS3 instead, so it will have room for all the great stuff I'll be loading onto it in the next 8 years.

As for the whole trophy/achievement debate. Who cares who made it first? This whole industry is made off of finding what the competition is doing and making it better. That's called competition and it means that with a better product, we the consumer reap the rewards. Atari improved on Coleco, Nintendo improved on Atari, Sega tried to improve on Nintendo, Sony improved on Sega and Nintendo, X-box tried to improve on all of them...Now here were are, all of them ripping each other off, trying for their share of the market. And right now, I'd rather play a slightly flawed version of Fallout 3 instead of digging out the paddles to play Pong again...although pong is pretty fun....

I'm just worried that this may mean devs have less time to spend on the game's own features in order to make the trophies. Also, might some devs be forced to drop plans for other support like custom soundtrack in favor of trophy development?
Trophies are great when they're done properly. But things that are forced aren't always done so properly.

I wouldn't worry too much like I said earlier Microsoft has made this kind of thing mandatory since day one and the devs don't actually seem to mind as you can tell from some of the AAA titles on the 360. And look at the AAA titles that have trophies already on the PS3. I think we will be ok. If anything it will make them think about little easter eggs or challenges that they can add to the game.

I assume when they make trophies/ach for their game, they would do it last. Idk but it seems most logical. That way they wouldn't have to rely on shifting the game around based soley on the trophies. Therefore, if this is true, you shouldn't have to worry. Besides I doubt they put too much thought into some of them anyways. Yes they have some pretty funny/creative names for them, but for the actual implementation of them, they are fairly simple.

Hmm this is kinda of a mixed bag for me. When I'm playing a game like Silent Hill, it would kind of be a buzz kill when I've killed some nurse it says "Well Done, Trophy Achievement!" or whatever. It would just kinda suck me out of the atmosphere of the game, that's all. If there's an option to disable the message that pops up telling you you have a new trophy I'd be sweet with it.

even if i complete a required task on this old save i dont get a trophy .i think it should be based on gameplay and not a new game altogether .

This is kind of cool. I know I've started playing a few old games again just to try and get some trophies but I would rather see custom soundtracks over Trophy support. Some of the music in some games really blows, and I'd rather just listen to my own tunes.

That being said, I've been playing Eye Of Judgment a lot lately and am enjoying it a lot more, and that's mostly to the fact that I'm trying to get the trophies.

RPG's have always kind of had trophy systems of their own in them anyways. You explore a little bit more and do things a certain way and you unlock a special weapon or ability. (remember what you had to do to get the Ultimate weapons for each of the characters in FFVII?) It would be kind of neat to have that on your trophy wall to brag about, but of all the games out there, I think RPG's need trophies the least. They're already built into the games as extras.

@CH1N00k, I couldn't agree with you more on your above reply about multiplatforms. Sounds like you've been playing just as long as I have. I got the money for the xbox but have no interest in it. technology is inferior, the exclusives aren't that much of a draw, don't trust the RROD, and from what I hear its loud and would be an eye sore in my living room..nothing I have is white.

as far as trophies, ITS ABOUT FRIKKIN TIME! I can't stand the fact that developers are too lazy to incorporate them especially when the game is multiplatform and achievements are already established. It is just plain LAZY. I mean come on, does it really take that much resource to incorporate something that you already have the structure set up for? How come GTAIV got trophies out in 2 weeks after announcing it? It can't be that difficult.

Welcome to 2005 Sony. Better late than never I guess...

How about we get something innovative soon? You know aside from all the other innovations in the PS3 like Six-Axis. Oh wait...

In all seriousness tho, it's about damn time. I'm tired of tellin all my friends the cool things I've done in my PS3 games. Now I can just show them the achievements -- I mean trophies.

So now you'll have digital proof of something that your friends STILL won't care about... :)

Seriously, as neat an idea as they are, Trophies and Achievements are pointless and they corrupt the gaming experience. No longer are games played for fun, rather they are "worked on" by insecure nerds desperately seeking a faux sense of accomplishment and ego inflation. I read a user-review of Valkyria Chronciles and the reviewer docked the game half a point because it had no trophies. HALF A POINT!

Until my Trophies get me something tangible (bonus content, spendable store points, etc), I'm never going to go out of my way to get them.

I actually like the achievements -- I mean trophies. Yeah, a lot of people abuse the system, but that's because they think that people will bow down to them based on gamerscore -- I mean trophies collected.

My friends and I really use achievements -- I mean trophies -- the way intended. We compare games (we know how good a game is based on how many achievements -- I mean trophies -- our friend has unlocked), we use it to rub a little extra salt in during the trash talk, things like that.

But I'm not going to respect some random guy on the internet just cuz he has more achievements -- I mean trophies -- than I do.

I am so glad they've finally issued this. If M$ is doing it, why not Sony? Especially in the case of a multiplat game. It's pretty upsetting, for example, to see Fallout 3 for 360 get the achievements but not the PS3's copy. For crying out loud, just make them the same lol.

So why is everyone so worried about trophies being mandatory? Do you honestly think that trophies are THAT hard to develop on a single game? So, developers are going to leave the PS3 and some big bucks because of something that takes... maybe a whole weeks work?

This is not a major issue at all... I don't think the devs are just going to drop all their plans, or lower the quality of games, just over a few trophies... Thats like saying you could make a whole sundae icecream and sell it for $50, but you don't want to add the cherry on top so you just rather not make it... That makes no sense!!! $50 is a whole new game! +10! lol
