PS3 Price Drop In Europe Next Year?

Sony has already stated they don't plan to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 any time soon, but a recent rumor says a price cut might not be far off for Europe.

According to a rumor issued by D+PAD Magazine, Sony's next-gen machine will lower in price in March 2009 in Europe. This information comes from an "inside source" met at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing in London, and this person apparently dropped a few more interesting tidbits of information. He (or she) said that both LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm will be coming to the PSP, Uncharted 2 looks a lot like the original Uncharted (hardly a bad thing), and everyone was "wowed" by God of War III, which was "masterfully shown at the end." This falls in line with David Jaffe's "HOLY HOLY HOLY FU**ING HELL!" reaction to Sony Santa Monica's GoW efforts. Of course, Sony has already responded to all these rumors with their classic, "we don't comment on rumor and speculation" policy, but we'd like to think a few of these details are 100% true. But let's just say this: March would be a very good time for a PS3 price drop; Killzone 2 is slated to launch in February, and God of War III maybe in the spring. If the software continues to arrive, people are really gonna want that PS3...

Anyway, we'll wait and see if some Sony executive somewhere is willing to break the silence and confirm any of this; if not, we'll just keep hoping.

sony need to sort out psn voice chat then GOODBYE MICROSOFT.

Its's obvious there going be a price cut march because it the end of sony fiscal year. Which ends march 31st.

I don't use voice chat very much but my friend uses it on xbox all the time. It's kind of neat I guess.

HOME will be big motivation for that I believe, once everyone is in their social networking experience, demand for an adequate voice chat experience wil be up.

Maybe they think that regardless of the price, parents are gonna get kids what they want. Of course they'll miss out on other things.

Also, the sales they don't make because of price, might be made up by the additional $50 per console or however much they would cut the price.

I think that the price cut could be a rumor. I hate to bring up the economy and the fact that I don't think that gaming is recession proof, but it could go both ways.

In some aspects, it might makes sense to lower prices seeing how some people are strugling.

At the same time they may not be able to because Sony may be struggling as well. I remember hearing that other sony brands haven't been selling too well.

I'll end with a "It's entirely possible" statement.

A pricecut in March 2009 is either a really bad rumor or a really stupid move. That type of pricecut can only do bad things to Sony's 2008 holiday PS3 sales. They're gonna lose many new owners that otherwise would buy during the holiday rush. Why would customers buy a PS3 for $399 if in a couple of months, they probably can get it for less. I hope it's a rumor. A pricecut is way better served near the end of 2009 to coincide with next year's holidays. Either cut the price now for 2008 holidays(which is highly unlikey) or just bank on their exclusive games during Feb/March 2009.

hmm...I thought it was selling pretty good in EU...better if it was in America -- or Japan too probably.

If they can get the price point down to 250-300 with an 80GB HDD before next holiday, they could start picking up some huge market share over here.

Seeing how most of the world is in some sort of economic downturn, Sony would be wise to issue a PS3 version for under $300 bucks ! That's the number gripe I've heard about the PS3 since it's launch is its outrageous price and Sony's execs refusal to get a price that's reasonable.


Not many people are willing to part with $300-$400 for a game console !

A little bit off topic but I think there should be an area where PS3 fans can post great deals on PS3 games/system that they come across. It would be a good way of helping the PS3 community. I for one can't turn down great deals on games. I know there are forums but it ain't workin atm :).

In order to keep sales at least moving along, they will officially deny any price cut until it happens. I bet it will, but sometimes the "insider" is just repeating a rumor he heard so we'll see.

to be honest, I am fine with the limited accessibility of the ps3 to kids by means of price. Let them scream racial slurs and such at each other on live. I am used to sniping in resistance and simply hearing "damn, nice shot zeppo."
