Yamauchi's Ambitious Vision Of Online Play In Gran Turismo 5

There are certain guys in this industry who are never happy with the current; they're always looking forward to the future in an attempt to fulfill their extremely ambitious vision. Hideo Kojima is one such person, and Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi is another.

According to CVG, Yamauchi says he has "huge plans" for the online component of the upcoming Gran Turismo 5, but the technology isn't quite where it needs to be just yet. He says they'll need improvement all across the board, from software to hardware to infrastructure, but if they can manage to hit their goal, gamers can expect something very, very special. Said Yamauchi:

"We've only done a very small part of what we want to do online, and of course there's a lot of things you can do online that we haven't even touched yet. A lot of that will not only depend on the advancement of the hardware, but of the infrastructure of the internet - connection speeds and things like that.

We're going to need a lot of software improvements, hardware improvements and infrastructure improvements all around the world. What we have to look as what we are going to do when the internet connection speeds are 10,000 times faster than what it is now."

As for the status of GT5, Yamauchi would only say that "production is moving forward," and we really don't expect to hear about an estimated release date for quite some time. However, he did say that 2010 isn't really accurate, and that the fifth installment in this legendary racing series may arrive "sooner" than we all think. And if you're a fan of online play - it will be a first in the series in GT5 - it seems you have a lot to look forward to.

Sounds very interesting. With how much time is going into thise game and even the release of a pricey "demo" I really hope it pays off.

Given what Yamauchi said here the online had better be spectacular or it is going to be "a huge disappointment" in the media. I wish devs would not make such bold statements. What happened to the Teddy Roosevelt mentality of "speak softly and carry a big stick" (I know he didn't come up with it)? If devs would just keep their months shut and let the games speak for themselves 1) games would have to do a lot of talking 2) the media couldn't blow up minor details into being catastrophic. I am not saying I don't want to hear about a game but I would love it if more devs were humble about their projects and just let the world be wowed by the end result.

If you love racing games then you have to pick this series up. It is a racing simulator unlike anything out there.

I don't find myself ever being duped by the GT franchise. Even Prologue was what other franchises would consider a complete game...

What are these guys on? How the hell are these guys sooo creative? Their minds are just so visionary. The ability to see into the future is something that the GREATS in the industry CAN do and do it well...

damage and penalties for sorry drivers, there alot out there. (sorry I hate that Im in the top 100 in almost every time trial, but can't seem to get any one with any kind of respect to race me straight up, instead of racing they bump me on every turn and get me the penalty.) If they don't fix that it really will spoil the point of the whole game for real gamers.

Hahahaha. I'm guilty of slamming people into walls on every turn, especially when they won't let me pass them. Not only do I then get to pass them, but the impact slows down my car so I can take the turn without applying the brakes :)

Sounds good but I don't think they need to worry about integrating things for net speeds 10,000 times faster than they are. That could really take awhile for devs to put in, maybe they can put in the planned awesomeness for the online and then patch it when the net gets 10,000 times faster?

Exactly! That way the game gets released a lot sooner and if they keep coming out with patches then the game will be timeless and they won't have to spend Million$ just to come out with another gran turismo, unless Sony makes another Playstation better than the 3rd one.

I think Yamauchi for starters wants Online to be an Online version of the type of set-up we see in GT single player modes. Races spanning type, car type, power output, drivetrain, model year etc etc. Just a massive GT Life enviroment, couple with Home of course.

Online becoming the main feature of games really annoys me. Give me a more robust AI anyday and then you dont need online and you dont have to worry about infrastructure problems creating lag.

I hear ya, online is overrated. Maybe it's cuz I'm old school but I think online should just be an kind of bonus extra. They can make it awesome, but when it eclipses the main game that is problematic in my book.

I love a good story but especially in a tactical shooter or Sim racer, nothing can touch Online right now nothing can match playing against a SKILLED, adept human player. Some races i've had online were amazingly close in ways AI can't do.

Ive been beaten by one PSU Forum member who averages 3 seconds a lap faster around "650PP Suzuka No Mercy" than me and many others. But unlike being beaten by 3 seconds a lap by a computer, you know with this guy its skill and years of practice lapping it up and not just a computer being very fast because he's in the system.

Gran Turismo should get involved with Home. That way we could drive to our friends' apartments on Home by using our cars from gran turismo!

Playstation HOME and Gran Turismo will be HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE

I can't wait to see what that'll be like

And man I cannot wait ot see what Gran Turismo 5 will be like.

It'll definitely take the crown as best racing game. No surprise there, it has been the best racing game in each generation since ps1.
