PS3 "Sixense" Wii-Like Controller Seen In Demonstration Videos
Don't get too excited; what you're looking at here is only a mock-up, but thanks to a video leaked by PlayStation LifeStyle, you can now see what's known as the "Sixense" in action.
Everyone knows the Nintendo Wii has enjoyed great success, and most will agree it's due more to the unique interactive mechanic rather than the hardware or software. Hence, when something is this popular, it would only make sense for other companies to capitalize, which is apparently what Sony plans to do in this case. Throughout 2008, we continued to hear rumors about a possible "PS3mote," which would function much like the Wii's wand. The rumor could never be confirmed or even clarified, but the theories swirled; it might break apart, it might be designed specifically for one genre, it might do far more than the Wii-mote ever thought of doing, etc. But nothing could ever be considered concrete...until now. In those videos, you will see demonstrations using what is currently dubbed the "Sixense," and we await official news from Sony on the subject. As it's clearly still in a testing phase of sorts, we don't expect such a peripheral to be available for the holidays, but we're going to keep an eye on this going into 2009.
While we do think this is an immensely cool idea, we do have one remonstrance: Sony, don't you think that if we wanted a Wii, we'd buy a Wii? And for those who have neither the PS3 or Wii but just want the motion-sensing of the Wii-mote, what's causing them to pay the extra hundreds for the PS3? Of course, this accessory is an add-on; it's hardly the console's focus, unlike with the Wii, so that's the main difference. Even so...well, we'll see how things go and keep you updated.

Though, saying that, it is still possible that this is it, and Sony hasn't announced it yet. But as of yet, Sony hasn't.....so....

It is an extra option for certain game-play applications; I just hope that it doesn't take off too much (If it is even authentic) and corrupt the potential game-library of the PS3, with too much over-focus on software designed for the peripheral by third-parties, and at the expense of other games that would have been made in its' place.
This is all an unlikely scenario however since the people receptive to the concepts highlighted by the Wii are present consumers and may not have a reason to change consoles, and the folks who have other consoles instead obviously have limited interest in game-play driven by the Wii-mote.

I have a wii and I hardly use it. Think I'm going to buy these controllers (probably costing $50 each) and then go out and buy $60 games, when I can go out and get a game of comparable quality -- albeit worse graphics -- for $50? Pass.
P.S. Who wants to bet that PSN would get a bunch of jacked up Wii ports?

The sixaxis was obviously put in because of the wiimote. I do think if there was no wiimote, we wouldn't have seen sixaxis but a wimote like motion controller peripheral anyway.
To be honest, I'm not keen on the sixaxis motion in gaming. I haven't gotten a Wii for 2 reasons, 1 is that I don't want to play the type of games I want with motion. and 2 is that the Wii has no games fuul stop.
Probably thr real reason the Wii has no real games is that the Wiimote doesn't work with them. Imagine GTA IV with a Wiimote, just wouldn't work.

Nintendo was able to get the scratch together and their last 2 consoles didn't sell that hot.
Plus, Nintendo put out a full-fledged product. They didn't simply talk about possible ideas. They didn't throw in a half-assed knockoff of the competition.
As for it coming out anyways, we won't know if it wasn't for the Wii stomping and pissing all over both Sony and Microsoft.

I have used a Wii before and found the wand thing very hard to use.
This could be good for party games etc like the Wii has but I wouldn't want to use it for single games.

So what if sony was to steal some of the wii's thunder, it would only mean more money for development of more games. There will always be quality software for the ps3 and if they make some money by getting more casual gamers to buy consoles we all win.

If it is a powerful PS3 controller, then i welcome it wholeheartedly. Sony won't make the mistakes that Ninty did. If Nintendo had made a good console first them thought of adding a new form of control to the existing form then they might of made something great. Sony is far less short sighted imo.
I wonder though, why is it that so few will give the Sixaxis motion sensor a chance? It's an excellent system. Don't let your prejudices against the Wii get in the way of enjoying Sony's wonderful systems to it's full.

see, i'm very animated when i play. i'm all over the place, which makes it hard to do anything motion related.
I do far better in small, controlled sequences (like in RaC:ToD) than as an actual gameplay element.

Sadly little Billy got a Wii at christmas day played it Killed it.
What would happen if THE PLAYSTATION 4 completely removes HD visuals and replaces Dualshock with PS3mote the death of video games as we speak.
Same scenario for Microsoft

If you link the new controller with the PSeye, I think it's a good thing. Will I buy one? Well my girlfriend wants a Wii, so I'd probably buy one of these controllers for her instead of buying the Wii itself. I might try it a few times in games, but the beauty of it is, I don't have to use it all the time. I can go back to traditional gaming whenever I want with my other controller.
I think you guys are over reacting a bit in thinking this is the death of the true gamer. This is just an alternative to attract a wider audience.
Like someone else said in here, if you don't like it you don't have to buy it. For those that will buy it, there is more than enough room in the gaming universe for them to join.

I'm very excited about the future in gaming, the Wii was only the start of a new era, I'm hoping that what they started will be refined soon!

This is the first time I have ever been disappointed in an article on this site. Alas, I know not everything can be perfect, it's just that this site is normally so close to it!

The first time they ever demoed it was at NVISION 08. I got to the show a day early, right when Sixense was setting up their booth. I talked to a few of the guys and they let me play with it. Awesome stuff. Can't wait for this to be officially released! ;)

MetalHead said it right. The reason so many of us dont have a wii is because of the games. If we were given the ps3 as it is now with all its power and capabilities with some wiimotes for kicks and all the possibilities of that, I'm sure most people wouldnt mind.
At this point, however, it does seem a little late and almost cheap for sony to make a botched hijacking of one of the main aspects that sells another console.

it'd be nice if it didn't just look like a wiimote with a coat of black spray paint...
