PS3 "Sixense" Wii-Like Controller Seen In Demonstration Videos

Don't get too excited; what you're looking at here is only a mock-up, but thanks to a video leaked by PlayStation LifeStyle, you can now see what's known as the "Sixense" in action.

Everyone knows the Nintendo Wii has enjoyed great success, and most will agree it's due more to the unique interactive mechanic rather than the hardware or software. Hence, when something is this popular, it would only make sense for other companies to capitalize, which is apparently what Sony plans to do in this case. Throughout 2008, we continued to hear rumors about a possible "PS3mote," which would function much like the Wii's wand. The rumor could never be confirmed or even clarified, but the theories swirled; it might break apart, it might be designed specifically for one genre, it might do far more than the Wii-mote ever thought of doing, etc. But nothing could ever be considered concrete...until now. In those videos, you will see demonstrations using what is currently dubbed the "Sixense," and we await official news from Sony on the subject. As it's clearly still in a testing phase of sorts, we don't expect such a peripheral to be available for the holidays, but we're going to keep an eye on this going into 2009.

While we do think this is an immensely cool idea, we do have one remonstrance: Sony, don't you think that if we wanted a Wii, we'd buy a Wii? And for those who have neither the PS3 or Wii but just want the motion-sensing of the Wii-mote, what's causing them to pay the extra hundreds for the PS3? Of course, this accessory is an add-on; it's hardly the console's focus, unlike with the Wii, so that's the main difference. Even so...well, we'll see how things go and keep you updated.

this goes in the "meh" pile.

it'd be nice if it didn't just look like a wiimote with a coat of black spray paint...

Um, Ben, that's not a mock-up, it's a photoshopped Wiimote. Seriously. I saw that same image on the internet about a year ago. It is, and always has been, a fake.

I can't remember if I saw it on here or not, but isn't there something else that resembles a DS3 but can break apart and re-assemble to take advantage of motion controls?

I went through a couple of the links, and didn't actually find any sort of connection to Sony being behind this. So far, after I looked at the videos the company that makes sixense is saying it will revolutionize gaming "on consoles and PC". "Consoles" as in "plural" and "PC" as in, not the PS3. It's an understandable error for PS Lifestyle to make, since Sony actually is developing something similar to the Wiimote, and "Sixense" sounds like "Sixaxis".

Though, saying that, it is still possible that this is it, and Sony hasn't announced it yet. But as of yet, Sony hasn't.....so....

As a formerly dedicated Nintendo consumer, the Wii-Mote and Nintendo's general focus on alternative gaming is why I will never purchase that console, no matter what they release in the future. The only thing that appeals to me is the Virtual Console and even that is overpriced for what those games used to be valued at ten to fifteen years ago.

It is an extra option for certain game-play applications; I just hope that it doesn't take off too much (If it is even authentic) and corrupt the potential game-library of the PS3, with too much over-focus on software designed for the peripheral by third-parties, and at the expense of other games that would have been made in its' place.

This is all an unlikely scenario however since the people receptive to the concepts highlighted by the Wii are present consumers and may not have a reason to change consoles, and the folks who have other consoles instead obviously have limited interest in game-play driven by the Wii-mote.

Nobody that wants a wii is going to buy a ps3 even with this new remote. However, I don't think the wii will last as long as the ps3, and maybe the people playing wii games now will have to switch to the ps3 when the wii finally burns out...Hypothetically

::sigh:: Sony must be getting fairly desperate. Wish they'd realize that coming up with new ideas is better than ripping off other's ideas is a better way to go.

I have a wii and I hardly use it. Think I'm going to buy these controllers (probably costing $50 each) and then go out and buy $60 games, when I can go out and get a game of comparable quality -- albeit worse graphics -- for $50? Pass.

P.S. Who wants to bet that PSN would get a bunch of jacked up Wii ports?

This remote type motion controller is something Sony had in plans years ago well before the wii-mote was first ever revieled. There was that what Sony patented and the mock up was a remote that resembles the wii-mote pointing at the eyetoy camera for ps2. There is an interview with Phil Harison which he talks about having a motion controller for PS2. He mentions how Sony wants to replicate the motion from the film Minority Report... this too before any wiimote by Nintendo. Sony been wanting to go through with it but it looks like they are copying.

The sixaxis was obviously put in because of the wiimote. I do think if there was no wiimote, we wouldn't have seen sixaxis but a wimote like motion controller peripheral anyway.

To be honest, I'm not keen on the sixaxis motion in gaming. I haven't gotten a Wii for 2 reasons, 1 is that I don't want to play the type of games I want with motion. and 2 is that the Wii has no games fuul stop.
Probably thr real reason the Wii has no real games is that the Wiimote doesn't work with them. Imagine GTA IV with a Wiimote, just wouldn't work.

If Sony couldn't come up for the R&D funds after the PS1 and PS2, then there's something wrong with them.

Nintendo was able to get the scratch together and their last 2 consoles didn't sell that hot.

Plus, Nintendo put out a full-fledged product. They didn't simply talk about possible ideas. They didn't throw in a half-assed knockoff of the competition.

As for it coming out anyways, we won't know if it wasn't for the Wii stomping and pissing all over both Sony and Microsoft.

I totally see the creative potential in that. However, only MS has the financial resource to toss millions upon millions of dollars in the way of experimental ideas. They can throw a wild haymaker, get hit, and not even feel it. But Sony has to be a little more careful looking after themselves, and they are.

Motion controls is old news, a one-trick pony that's already been used. They have to understand that it wasn't any one single thing that made Nintendo's Wii successful. And if it were one thing, it is the iconic brand-name that's been instilled in the the global mass-culture over many years. And no amount of marketing dollar or mimickry of ideas can make up for that. Kinda of like why Dunkin Donuts doesn't even need to televise commercials, anymore. But Sony needn't worry about that, either. Mario is going the way of a Pacman, and the "dodo", because there are "gaps" in generations. And after the life of the party, the creative genius who is Miyamoto takes off his hat, Nintendo will go the way of Atari, and Sega. Kinda sad, but they've made history.

Am I the only one who enjoys the sixaxis? Was neat in Folklore and made flying that damn helicopter in GTAIV a lot easier. This 'mote isn't really my style but there IS a market here that even Nintendo hasn't tapped: the good-graphics arcade at home feel. All the shovelware that Wii has is pretty much blobby people with circles for hands, there was a time when arcades gave us the best graphics available. Maybe Sony wants to bring that to PS3 owners, get in on the party gaming stuff. I prefer gaming to be a solitary experience these days to escape from the insanity of other people but I can see this working if done right. I'd like to see light-gun games make a comeback too, with solid graphics mind you. It probably won't be a huge thing, but it might find a niche market.

No doubt. I think the motion controls are very cool, and I enjoy them, but I don't expect them at all to sell systems. What I meant is that the success of the Wii had more to do with trend-setting, than actually meeting consumer needs/wants. To Sony's benefit, gamer's needs are pretty much here to stay. But trends come and go.

Will have a look at this but doubt I will buy it. First thing I looked at when I got the PS3 was whats the controller like.

I have used a Wii before and found the wand thing very hard to use.

This could be good for party games etc like the Wii has but I wouldn't want to use it for single games.

I know everybody thinks this is really lame, motion controls are a gimmick, and the wii sucks. I kinda feel that way too. The wii fails for most gamers. But what if sony was able to take what nintendo started and do it right? It could happen, right?

So what if sony was to steal some of the wii's thunder, it would only mean more money for development of more games. There will always be quality software for the ps3 and if they make some money by getting more casual gamers to buy consoles we all win.

I think baseball, golf and maybe a shooter game are good with motion control. I hope it function better than the wii mote which can be frustrating since if the the motion has to be in front of the bar. This one seem a little more advance and much more sensitive, which could be a downside since the sixaxis is too sensitive but is awesome to use for Little big planet

I agree with ActionJackson. There doesn't seem to be any real indication that this is really anything to do with the PS3. Since it's shown running on Windows Vista and said to be for PC and consoles, it may be for PC and 360. The only likn they have is PS Underground, and that link isn't entirely proven.
If it is a powerful PS3 controller, then i welcome it wholeheartedly. Sony won't make the mistakes that Ninty did. If Nintendo had made a good console first them thought of adding a new form of control to the existing form then they might of made something great. Sony is far less short sighted imo.
I wonder though, why is it that so few will give the Sixaxis motion sensor a chance? It's an excellent system. Don't let your prejudices against the Wii get in the way of enjoying Sony's wonderful systems to it's full.

I agree to a certain extent...But even with the eye, the gamer still needs to hold something in their hand to simulate a sword or gun or whatever the game needs or else it will feel awkward...Maybe they should invent a Play-Doh controller. Mold it to whatever you need for the game and then play..lol

as far as motion controls go, i'm not necessarily against them, i would just never use them.

see, i'm very animated when i play. i'm all over the place, which makes it hard to do anything motion related.

I do far better in small, controlled sequences (like in RaC:ToD) than as an actual gameplay element.

If they do it right, then it could be a great thing. The reason I don't like the Wii is not because of the motion control, but just the lack of games that interest me. If they release some good games with modern graphics that use the Sixense, it may just be really good.

I dont know what everyone is complaining about. I though it looked very ambitious from what they showed in the videos. Did anyone else even watch them? Cause all they were doing was testing the technology, and not trying to rip Nintendo off. Its like Ben said, its not what the controller will look like in the future.

Why is the Wii selling more than both the PS3 and Xbox 360? PROPAGANDA the ads show a retarded family playing a game (Wiimusic worst made so far) It gives you the message hey the wii looks fun let's get our Son a wii.
Sadly little Billy got a Wii at christmas day played it Killed it.

What would happen if THE PLAYSTATION 4 completely removes HD visuals and replaces Dualshock with PS3mote the death of video games as we speak.

I'm not a fan of the Wii style gaming, but I think this will be a good idea for Sony. They've taken an idea and made it better. And now whole families will be able to enjoy the game console instead of just the "older gamers" If you want to play a game using your regular controller, you can. If you want to play with a little more activity...you pick up the sixense and away you go...This will allow whatever console that uses this to appeal to a broader range of consumer...and that my friends is just good marketing. Sure the Wii is really popular but we've already seen lots of posts where people have picked it up and now don't play it anymore because of the lack of better games and graphics. Now if you could take those games, give them the graphical power of the PS3 and bigger/better games with space of BluRay...you've got a sure thing. This also turns the PS3 into an all in one system...you don't have to buy a Wii or an Xbox anymore, it can all be done on the PS3, it's no longer a game console, it's a Multimedia center. It can also replace a few PC's to a certain degree.

If you link the new controller with the PSeye, I think it's a good thing. Will I buy one? Well my girlfriend wants a Wii, so I'd probably buy one of these controllers for her instead of buying the Wii itself. I might try it a few times in games, but the beauty of it is, I don't have to use it all the time. I can go back to traditional gaming whenever I want with my other controller.

I think you guys are over reacting a bit in thinking this is the death of the true gamer. This is just an alternative to attract a wider audience.

Like someone else said in here, if you don't like it you don't have to buy it. For those that will buy it, there is more than enough room in the gaming universe for them to join.

I like the fact that games are becoming more and more interactive. I would love to play a shooter game where I actually had to crouch behind the couch in order to take cover. Or a sword dueling game where I can actually block and attack with my sword as I would in real life (yet to see that on the wii). With Sony playing with this and also the PS EYE head tracking technology, I do see the coming years being very exciting. Imagine simulated 3D landscapes using the head tracking technology and at the same time have a PS Mote to actually control you're character a 100% accurately. It would be a whole new way of playing games, it's almost like you would actually be in them...

I'm very excited about the future in gaming, the Wii was only the start of a new era, I'm hoping that what they started will be refined soon!

The first time they ever demoed it was at NVISION 08. I got to the show a day early, right when Sixense was setting up their booth. I talked to a few of the guys and they let me play with it. Awesome stuff. Can't wait for this to be officially released! ;)

Ok ok. There seems to be a good number of people saying that if you bought a ps3 you wouldnt want a wii/wiimote etc. and i can understand how that idea would be mostly true but given unlimited funds (and perhaps time) I'm willing to bet we would have just about all of the systems.

MetalHead said it right. The reason so many of us dont have a wii is because of the games. If we were given the ps3 as it is now with all its power and capabilities with some wiimotes for kicks and all the possibilities of that, I'm sure most people wouldnt mind.

At this point, however, it does seem a little late and almost cheap for sony to make a botched hijacking of one of the main aspects that sells another console.
