Midway's New Project "Looks As Good If Not Better Than Gears 2"

Who knows where the next masterpiece will come from in the video game world? Perhaps it will come from Midway...

Midway creative director Simon Woodroffe spoke to Videogamer.com about a currently unannounced game they have in development, and it's looking absolutely fantastic thanks to the benefit of "shared technology." How good is it looking? Woodroffe says that while he can't tell us much about it, "it looks as good if not better than Gears 2." That's a very bold claim, and he added that despite the comparison to Epic's awesome title, what Midway has cooking is "a totally different set up" and a "very exciting concept." No, we don't know the title of the game in question, but we're suddenly very interested to know what it is...Woodroffe said that being the "cynical type," it's rare for a simple prototype or sample to blow him away, but apparently, it happened. He concluded:

"... you know, the biggest factor that hasn't been touched upon in recent articles is the shared knowledge. We have 600 to 700 devs, all with Unreal experience, all working for the same company, all of whom can talk to each other. When we hit a problem, we have more people working on the engine than anybody - by a long way. And we have a massive pool of resources to draw upon. At least one team has dealt with pretty much every feature you might want in a next-gen game. Which means that we, as designers, are in a great position - because we can actually build games to be games, not just technology showcases any more."

Okey-doke. Now that you've built up the hype, let's see this mystery gem!

That's a good question. Gears 2 certainly isn't multi...

Color me skeptical, the Unreal engine has proven itself to be plagued with problems. Especially on PS3.

Well you could probably do some things with the colour palette that would make it look much "prettier", at least to casual observation. Gears 2 is still pretty muted at points because of the setting, but it still looks very good. Which it should, being Epic's showcase for the engine and all.

It will be interesting to see what Midway are working on, but I think either Epic are going to be better at using their own tech or this project is so different that they won't be comparable. Hopefully when this is revealed it will actually be something worth paying attention too though.

Cool claim but...isn't there Killzone 2 and the "OH MY FU***** S*** GOD OF WAR 3" that already passes Gears of War 2??? Anyway still pretty cool - but...eh I'll stick with beautiful Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Am I the only one who wasn't blown away by Gears2? Yeah, I enjoyed it, and the game had a lot of detailed textures, but nothing we haven't seen before. Correction: I fired a mortar once, into a horder of locust soldiers, and one of them was sent heals-up, straight up through the sky, at a constant velocity, never to come back down. Apparently he entered orbit around Sera. So, I never saw that before...

Don't know much about Gears but I am sick to death of people saying that it invented the cover system, that's been around awhile.

I think that Gears2 is pretty fun, but I hadn't have any WOW moments while I'm playing it.

I've been playing it with a high expectations and a high level of critism, and I found a LOT of pop ups, raw textures and many many incredible wrong human proportions (one hand two times de size of a head, and it's not design it's simple wrong programmed).

Gears2 is just a Gears 1.5 with nothing new like it's predecessor.

And I would love to ear that the graphics will equal MGS4, not Gears 2

well to my knowledge "KILLSWITCH" invented that cover system long before gears was even in conception. gears has nothing more than a better reworked cover system that killswitch has.

I don't wanna piss anyone off but am I the only one that didn't think MGS4 had spectacular graphics? I personally like Assassin's Creed's and Uncharted's graphics better. I only played the demo though so is that why?

Reading the Videogamer piece, Woodroffe isn't expecting the game to release until 2010. So his claim is more along the lines of "in a year or two we'll be able to release a game that might look comparable to a game that has already released, using the same engine", which dampens it a bit.

Especially if Epic are sticking to the current rate of releasing a new Gears game every two years, which would also put Gears 3 at 2010. Even if UE3 can't squeeze much more out of the 360, it's still plenty of time to further optimise the engine and enable a few new tricks.

I don't own a 360 but I have seen Gears of War in action. I like the look and play of it better than R2. I wish R2 went more the way of COD4 look instead of the R&C look.

Can't wait to play Killzone 2 though....should be realistic in a futuristic kind of way.

Off Topic, I'm thinking of adding Fallout 3 to my xmas list, hows the 3rd person view? Is it more action or more RPG? Weigh in for me if you can friends, thanks.

The third person view is bad. Everyone plays it in first person view, its much better

You like RPGs? Fallout 3 is fantastic. Don't bother with 3rd person. During combat you'll be using the VATS and it'll give you all the third person action you want. If you enjoyed Oblivion you'll enjoy F3. Same feel, different setting. It's not a JRPG and might feel more geared towards action, but really it's not.

Quick addition, if you have ever played Oblivion this game is EXACTLY like Oblivion. Ofcourse, not everything, but I guess youll see what I mean when you get it. So.. if you though Oblivion got boring after a while, this would fall under the same cat.(for me at least)

I think if you had never seen gears and then you played gears 2, you will be impressed with the gamplay. However if you seen gears 2 and never played gears, so you purchased both gears and gears 2. Playing first gears and then gears 2, I think wth gears 2 you'll feel like you're playing the second half of the story only it just got a little better.
