Home Will "Leapfrog" Competition, Open Beta Launch "Imminent"

For those who don't fully understand the purpose of a super-ambitious online service like PlayStation Home, Director Jack Buser is poised and ready to elaborate.

During an interview with Gamasutra, Buser addressed the Nintendo Miis, the fact that Home can entirely change how we relate to other people in a virtual universe, and the "revolutionizing" of the Friends list. He called Miis "par for the course" this generation, but Sony will "leapfrog" the competition with Home due to the simple fact that it will feature a personal space for your avatar. Furthermore, now that we really don't use arcades as a gamer congregation location of sorts, Home is a new option for a new generation. Buser explains:

"Users can express themselves in more ways than just how their avatar looks.  That's important, because in the real world you might learn some things about a person by the way that they're dressed or the things that they talk about, but you don't really know someone until you see how they live. Do they have dishes in the sink, what posters did they put on the wall...

We really see this as revolutionizing the concept of the "friends list" for console gamers.  Before, your friends were either people you already knew or people you'd met in a specific game, and with the latter, you'd probably only ever play that one game with them, and never really get to know them. PlayStation Home gives you a neutral space where you can really get to know someone. Even in the real world now if you're a gamer and you want to get to know other gamers, there really is nowhere left to go."

For those of you who have had the pleasure of testing out the closed beta, you'll probably agree with Buser's comments. As for us, we still maintain that while Home has a very long way to go, the foundation is most impressive, and we've no doubt it will be a smash success. Of course, one of the last questions Buser had to answer was whether or not Home would really release this year, and he replied quite simply that the launch of the open beta is now "imminent." He added that the public announcement is forthcoming, so stay tuned, excited PS3 owners!

Even as cut-down as the closed beta is, you can see all the building blocks for a revolutionary service. This is going to be VERY interesting once they open it up and everyone is on...

I'm part of the beta, Home have potential... Actually, there's nothing to do in Home. For now the problem is where the moderator? Every time I chat with other on many subject there's always a 1 IQ guy inserting himself in the middle of a group to scream and dance like a freak... We need home policeman to keep this place peaceful... otherwise this will become a mess where dumb rulez...

Can't wait to get in, have been outside my HOME for a long time...

I love the community aspect of it, it will really bring fans of certain games together(if done right)

Hope there are moderators aplenty, 'cause I can already see troublemakers trying to ruin it all.

So if its just an open beta, that means home is still in its beta stage right?
So when all of us do get in the open beta, there would be as much things to do as the closed beta now?

Basically I'm asking if the open beta will have more features than the current state.

I'm part of the second wave of the closed beta, I meet some who were part of the first wave of invitation and they tell me that Home dev team remove some area and features for the actual tests. They probably want to test the reliability of their server... I hope they will include more feature soon... But it a bit strange to have a mall without any opened stores... So the only thing left to do is to chat or dance...

I have been following closely the Beta of Home even though I am left Homeless. A lot of the testers are stating that there is an overwhelming amount of racism and sexist chauvinism. I just hope they quell this problem as quickly as possible. To think, all of these racist sexist ass-hats are living it up in home being complete wastes of life and people that legitimately would like to test and give insight into a service that all PS3 users will use are left on the outside. Amazing.

I just received a closed invite in an e-mail! For all of you beta testers out there, there will be a celebration between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. PST today to celebrate some new features. Too bad I don't have broadband @ my house so I can't make this invite useful :(

I can't wait for Home to go public. The only thing I'm worried about though is is there going to be any lag at all? Cos if everyone gets it who says they are, then there will be a hell of a lot of people in Home more or less at the same time which is only going to traffic up the internet, and my connection to the PSN is slow as it is...:(

3 things I really want from home.
1. group launch of games.
2. share videos and music with online members.
3. easy to use communication with online peeps.
I just hope they deliver.

I have been involved in an argument already on Home, some girl character accused my mate of being a perv cos he was asking her questions like why is a girl on home and if someone on home says they are a girl can you know they are a girl etc ?

I was like he is not my mate he was just talking to me about girls on home and this person came over and jumped in our conversation (which at the time was calm, amongst this person and myself, I was trying to explain to the person that I was new at home myself) I ended up leaving and going to play bowling instead, they found me and started harrassing me, I could have blocked the person, instead I left as Resistance 2 called me lol.

Home needs the offical people online more visable. I don't mind helping people out with technical problems but being accused of knowing a perv when I had just met some person and they asked me a random question I don't feel I should have to deal with that. I couldn't find anyone to help hence me leaving.

I agree with jay--

home needs some sort of police/moderator task force. there are too many users ruining the home experience. screaming into headsets, going into racist/sexist/religious rants.should there be, maybe, a text only setting? I don't know. but something should be done.

There's at least one Jehovah's Witness who posts regularly on this site that's never harassed anybody or given anyone any reason to make a statement like that... :)

Didn't mean to offend, it was a general statement concerning door knockers and Watchtower pamphlets.

Well, I don't think you'll need to concern yourself too greatly with either of those things in Home. ;)

You see, because there are no actual doors to knock... and they haven't worked out all the kinks in the Virtual Watchtower feature yet.

I'm not in the beta but I've seen video walkthroughs. Even if HOME doesn't turn out as revolutionary as Sony hoped. Those vids do show HOME is still miles ahead of what the competition are doing with their communities. Lets be honest, to Wii owners, do you actually use your Mii's? and if so, what is it that you can actually do with them?
I updated my 360 and like everyone else have a new avator, but after creating an avator, now what do you do with it? I just went back to playing games.

The Miis are fun for a few minutes in a big group setting. It's also cool to race with them in Mario Kart.

....and that's about it.

Argh! Not that I think it will be as magnificent as others do, but I'm still kinda irked that PSN sent me a beta code invitation the day after I left for vacation, so it was null and void when I got home last night. :-(

I was recently accepted into the closed beta, so I decided to check it out. I definitely see the great potential for connecting gamers with common interests, disseminating gaming news and setting up a creative online marketplace and community. However, I also share the sentiment of many that it has the potential to enable harassment without appropriate mediation. Unfortunately, people that project their insecurities and victimize others will always attempt to use a tool like this to hide behind.

I didn't encounter anything so over the top, but here are a few things that I did observe:

In the Home theatre section I noticed an annoying adult website address floating above an avatar's head.

Also, the adolescent "Weird Science" male in me decided to make an attractive female avatar. I've never been able to resist this creative power ever since the advent of gameface in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series--always more interesting for me as an observer when roaming around, testing the waters and yes, playing virtual golf. I was constantly getting "hit on" in Home--hysterical yet disturbing. After running away from/ignoring these advances, I decided to go back to a male avatar. Needless to say, I was not even approached.

Now I do realize that Home is supposed to be a place to meet new friends, but this was definitely an interesting social experiment. It gives a guy a caricature dose of what women have to deal with every day. Okay, so maybe I "asked for it" (the perennial chauvinist argument) by misrepresenting my gender (and being smoking hot ; ). However, if this is in fact a normal occurrence in a place that really should be gender neutral, I would feel a bit discouraged as an actual female gamer.

I have a female co-worker who got into the beta and she suddenly had a bunch of males online trying to talk to her and follow her around. Makes me feel kinda bad for female gamers to be 'stalked' by all the lonely guy gamers online! ;-) I wonder if you can get restraining orders against other members from interacting with you???

Love HOME and when on it last i was playing a game called icebreaker,it's an old retro type game but still worth a few try's lol,as i got into the game and got past a good few levels at the end of which i was awarded with some new clothes, hat and gloves most of which had the games logo on them, you also get the same sort of thing for bowling and pool so if this is the way home is going i'm loving it big time lol.
