Buy PS3 In Japan, Get RE5 Demo Disc
Last week, we heard about the Resident Evil 5 demo that would be headed to Japan, and were happy to learn Capcom would also bring it to North America as well. However, we then stumbled across the news that Japan would be getting a special demo disc for the Xbox 360...but no mention of a demo for the PlayStation 3. We also know the demo should go up on Xbox Live in Japan on December 5.
Of course, this quickly sparked debate that PS3 owners may not get the demo in this country, whether it be on a disc or the Store. But don't you worry; this really isn't true: according to GameZine.co.uk, Japanese gamers can nab the PS3 demo if they partake of a special PS3 purchase promotion. This promotion starts on December 18 and anyone who buys Sony's next-gen console in Japan will have a choice of buying two demo discs, one of which holds the RE5 demo. Now, considering the date, we might want to assume that the RE5 playable goodness will also appear on the PlayStation Store around that time. We know it will be on Live earlier, but again, this only applies to Japan as far as we know. Capcom has only said they will definitely bring the demo to the U.S., but they never bothered to issue any further details, so all of this is merely speculation. Let's just say that if you hear talk about how PS3 owners aren't getting the RE5 demo, ignore it. It's coming; it's just a matter of time.
We would've hoped to get the demo on the Store at the same time it appeared on Live, and while this clearly isn't happening in Japan, it might happen here. We'll keep you updated.

As for what demos hit what markets, that's completely dependent on the devs/pubs. Western devs/pubs are trying to gain a bigger hold in Japan, so they release more demos there, even when they don't have to put them out here.

Again this could be off the mark but given history I don't think it is tin-hat paranoid to think Microsoft would pay money to get anything.
Let us not forget $50 million was paid to Rockstar for DLC on GTAIV. And that price was only for two DLC packs.

But these are games and DLC, not demos. Almost every game that comes out on the 360 has a demo.
Now that I think about it, this is probably Sony/Capcom at fault.
Sony is trying to use the demo as a promo on disc. That means Blu-Ray manufacturing and everything else controls the timing. And they're probably holding off putting it out on PSN until after the promo or else why make promo discs?
Either that or Capcom is putting the demo out early on XBL because it wants more Xbox gamers to get it as well as PS3 owners. After all, this is the very first resident evil game on any M$ product, iirc.

People forget that Xbox is pretty large now. It's been out longer, it has a huge install base, hell, even tv shows are trending towards 360's and calling all consoles "xbox" instead of "playstation". It doesn't need to make as many of these kinds of moves.
Like it or not, M$ has shown it self to be a serious contender when it comes to gaming. If you look at true next-gen consoles only (PS3/360), it's still the dominant console overall, particularly in the US. Devs and Pubs have been trending towards the 360 since 05. If you don't believe me, look at Square. =P
Like I said previously, this is most likely a timing issue because PS3 is putting the demo on a CD to hopefully help increase sales.

So, yes, Microsoft DOES need to pull a stunt like this in order be relevant in the East.

If M$ really wanted an exclusivity for RE5, it would put out the money on an actual timed exclusivity rather than just a demo. Nobody buys consoles for a demo...well, maybe PS fans if this ploy works out. Lord knows I wouldn't.

I'll be quite frank here. Sony's marketing has been much less than stellar this go-round. I remember the awesome PS2 ads that I've seen -- although nothing beats mercenaries 2. These PS3 ones don't hold a candle to them. The one Resistance 2 ad I've seen only once in november almost made me not want to play the game it was so bad...

I really hope that the demo hit the US store and Marketplace at the same time.
