Buy PS3 In Japan, Get RE5 Demo Disc

Last week, we heard about the Resident Evil 5 demo that would be headed to Japan, and were happy to learn Capcom would also bring it to North America as well. However, we then stumbled across the news that Japan would be getting a special demo disc for the Xbox 360...but no mention of a demo for the PlayStation 3. We also know the demo should go up on Xbox Live in Japan on December 5.

Of course, this quickly sparked debate that PS3 owners may not get the demo in this country, whether it be on a disc or the Store. But don't you worry; this really isn't true: according to GameZine.co.uk, Japanese gamers can nab the PS3 demo if they partake of a special PS3 purchase promotion. This promotion starts on December 18 and anyone who buys Sony's next-gen console in Japan will have a choice of buying two demo discs, one of which holds the RE5 demo. Now, considering the date, we might want to assume that the RE5 playable goodness will also appear on the PlayStation Store around that time. We know it will be on Live earlier, but again, this only applies to Japan as far as we know. Capcom has only said they will definitely bring the demo to the U.S., but they never bothered to issue any further details, so all of this is merely speculation. Let's just say that if you hear talk about how PS3 owners aren't getting the RE5 demo, ignore it. It's coming; it's just a matter of time.

We would've hoped to get the demo on the Store at the same time it appeared on Live, and while this clearly isn't happening in Japan, it might happen here. We'll keep you updated.

So, Capcom has it's store inside the PSStore and are givin all their love to MS? Isn't that strange?

I really hope that the demo hit the US store and Marketplace at the same time.

Okay so i think they are putting it on XBL first because M$ paid them to. pretty much anytime a dev puts something on one system first when making it for 2, means they've been paid.

It wouldn't be the first nor will it be the last time that Microsoft has paid or will pay for timed content but if they are paying for timed demos then it is getting apparent that they are getting desperate especially in a region where they are the underdog.

I am sorry to bring this to your attention ape but this is an industry and in an industry there is competition. In order to have competition competitors must provide something over their competition be it timed content, innovation, service for cheaper, exclusive content, and a multitude of other things. So, the console war is very real and very required for this industry to flourish. Microsoft has the money to throw at ideals and experiments so why would they not pay for a demo to be released early if it gives them a foot hold on the competition?

Hopefully the Japanese store will still get the demo on it and I hope they get it sooner than the US store. Either way I will get both demos and see if there is a difference. The Japanese store seems to get lots of demo's that we don't get here granted they are not always good(Vampire Rain). I have noticed that a lot of the demo's they get are in English....Curious as to why they cannot put the demo on the US store seeing as how it is in English in Japan?

Anyone who thinks that they're going to pay for a timed DEMO needs to readjust their tin-foil hat. Yes, M$ is doing better than Sony and its entertainment division is finally profitable, but they are not using the money like confetti in a ticker tape parade. Seriously people, use some common sense.

@ coverton
As for what demos hit what markets, that's completely dependent on the devs/pubs. Western devs/pubs are trying to gain a bigger hold in Japan, so they release more demos there, even when they don't have to put them out here.

You are most likely correct in this but I don't think it should be ignored that Microsoft's track record shows them paying huge amounts of money for DLC from certain companies.

Again this could be off the mark but given history I don't think it is tin-hat paranoid to think Microsoft would pay money to get anything.
Let us not forget $50 million was paid to Rockstar for DLC on GTAIV. And that price was only for two DLC packs.

That's because the $50m is worth it. They probably sold way more than $50m in consoles and games because people bought 360's in anticipation for GTA DLC.

But these are games and DLC, not demos. Almost every game that comes out on the 360 has a demo.

Now that I think about it, this is probably Sony/Capcom at fault.

Sony is trying to use the demo as a promo on disc. That means Blu-Ray manufacturing and everything else controls the timing. And they're probably holding off putting it out on PSN until after the promo or else why make promo discs?

Either that or Capcom is putting the demo out early on XBL because it wants more Xbox gamers to get it as well as PS3 owners. After all, this is the very first resident evil game on any M$ product, iirc.

Do any of you SERIOUSLY believe that M$ would bat an eye at writing a six-figure check for ANY kind of exclusivity on one of Japan's most popular series? They could pay Capcom $500,000 to keep the demo off the PS3 for a week and recoup the cost elsewhere in a matter of hours. Let's not kid ourselves and remember it's MICROSOFT we're talking about here.

Sure, they could do it without blinking, but why would they when they don't need to?

People forget that Xbox is pretty large now. It's been out longer, it has a huge install base, hell, even tv shows are trending towards 360's and calling all consoles "xbox" instead of "playstation". It doesn't need to make as many of these kinds of moves.

Like it or not, M$ has shown it self to be a serious contender when it comes to gaming. If you look at true next-gen consoles only (PS3/360), it's still the dominant console overall, particularly in the US. Devs and Pubs have been trending towards the 360 since 05. If you don't believe me, look at Square. =P

Like I said previously, this is most likely a timing issue because PS3 is putting the demo on a CD to hopefully help increase sales.

I'm sorry, but the 360 still needs major help in Japan. The only reason it has done even as well as it has over there is because of Microsoft buying timed exclusivity on games targeted specifically at the Japanese gaming culture. And Resident Evil is, arguably, even bigger in Japan than it is stateside.

So, yes, Microsoft DOES need to pull a stunt like this in order be relevant in the East.

Oh, yeah, it needs help there, but not as much as it did a couple years back... But they're already making inroads and their strategies for Japan have been MUCH different than in the US. They've been focusing a lot more on RPG-based games to help their progress over there (from what I've heard).

If M$ really wanted an exclusivity for RE5, it would put out the money on an actual timed exclusivity rather than just a demo. Nobody buys consoles for a demo...well, maybe PS fans if this ploy works out. Lord knows I wouldn't.

Like Joe said it's probably a timing issue, but I wouldn't write off minor payments or kickbacks by M$ just because they know the early bird gets the worm, they know that people are generally stupid and if they see a demo on LIVE and then a commercial on TV that doesn't even MENTION the PS3 version (those ones that cut to a 360 logo as if it were exclusive and then offer the console at $199) people are just more likely to grab that one. M$ marketing is sneaky my friends, and so are their tactics. Remember when Bill-o the clown bought out Homer Simpson's home office and then trashed it? A cartoon yes, but rooted in reality.

And that could be part of it. Those ads you see are usually paid by M$, not capcom -- which is why they put the xbox tag on the end.

I'll be quite frank here. Sony's marketing has been much less than stellar this go-round. I remember the awesome PS2 ads that I've seen -- although nothing beats mercenaries 2. These PS3 ones don't hold a candle to them. The one Resistance 2 ad I've seen only once in november almost made me not want to play the game it was so bad...

Ppl MS will get the demo as well as PS3 owners thats all and truth be told MS won't go higher like this paying here and there cause in the very end because of the evolution of the In house studios the third part company's will loose ground and will become less important and when this time come i want to see MS paying for exclusives...
