Dark Athena Will Feature Two Unique Multiplayer Modes
We know The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is on the way in 2009 - much to our delight - and now we've learned that in addition to the new 10-hour campaign, we're gonna get the next-gen requirement: online multiplayer. If you didn't know, the 2004 Escape from Butcher Bay didn't have this now-expected feature.
According to CVG, we're getting the standard 12-player Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, but we'll also receive the benefit of "Butcher Bay Riot," which will boast three teams of four players each. Players can be mercenaries, guards, or even prisoners, and each team must try to reach the "central power cell" first. Another new mode is called "Pitch Black" (yep, like the movie), and it's exactly what it sounds like: the arena will be completely shrouded in darkness, and everyone's goal is to kill Riddick, who of course can see in the dark. If you're the lucky one to nail him, you play as Riddick the next round. How bad-ass is that? There are a total of 20 maps in the works for the game's release, and we're totally pumped for the final product. Not only might we want to replay the original Escape from Butcher Bay adventure again (in high-def!), but the new 10-hour campaign is alluring and these multiplayer additions sound both unique and promising. Aren't you getting tired of the same ol' same ol' when you log in to play some multiplayer online? So are we.
We'll continue to deliver more updates as we get closer to Dark Athena's release, and we're really starting to wonder if this could be a legitimate GoY 2009 contender...

But, I did go back and start playing it again and it doesn't hold up as well as I'd like to think it does. Bump mapping on low-res textures is crap. And the polygong tearing through peoples head's is worse than I remembered.
Still, the gameplay shines through and is a fun romp. I am really looking forward to this new version.

When the original came out, I thought it would be the start of more hybrid first-person/third-person games, but that hasn't really materialized (R6Vegas, Oblivion, but not many more). Instead, we get a developer trying to do platforming in first-person, which didn't work in Half-Life and still doesn't.
