PlayStation Home Makes TIME's Top 10 Gadget List For 2008

It may not be here just yet, but Sony is confident the open beta will launch before the year is out, and it appears TIME Magazine holds that same confidence.

Although it may be incorrectly labeled as a "gadget," PlayStation Home made TIME's Top 10 Gadget list for 2008, and this may come as a surprise to those in the video game world. It ain't really a gadget, but to be honest, we didn't believe something as innovative and edgy as Home would even be whispered in mainstream media for another year or two. They're typically way behind the curve, but perhaps TIME is just trying to make up for leaving Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots off their Top 10 Games list...considering that, maybe we shouldn't pay any attention to the Gadget selections. But anyway, here's TIME's description of their #10 pick for the Best Gadgets of 2008:

"After a number of launch delays, Sony's virtual world, "Home," gives folks one more reason to buy its pricey PS3 video game console. Users create their own human-looking avatar and get a virtual apartment near the "town square," a base of operations from which to socialize, play games and purchase an endless variety of Sony goods and services (think games, movies, music and more.) A cross between Second Life and the Sims, the service shows the promise of a commercial Metaverse. Price: free"

Well, of course we know all that, and the only thing left is to see the official launch announcement. We maintain that Home is no "gadget," but this is the type of advertising that could really help Sony. And besides, recognition of any kind is good, right?

What makes me so mad is how biased Gametrailers is, mainly they are for 360, for the topic was, Which systems offer the best online experience, and they said who wants to go on home, when you can get ripped of 50 extra and so on for live. I mean PS3 is taking the online experience to a whole another level! basically home kills avatars, Mii's and basically live and NWFC! but I have the beta and Home is going to be awesome, but my only complaint is bowling it sucks! but the dancing elements are the funniest. Every time I go home I have dance offs! LOL!

I would agree with dveisalive. Gametrailers, and even screwattack seems to be a little 360 biased. And that sucks too, because some of Screwattack's stuff is pretty good. Although, the more I watch, the more I see little jabs at PS3 and it's software...maybe it's just a few staff members over there, but hey...attitude reflects leadership, right? Wow, that might be pretty off topic, back to mixedkidbx...I'm gonna check my email RIGHT NOW!!!

I maintain that the Sony bashers out there are all former Segaholics who are pissed off at Sony for destroying the Dreamcast (great system) and running Sega out of the hardware business. They're everywhere folks!

See, what people like you don't understand, is that all you see in SW:TFU is probably another short game with things you may not like, but to people like me who have physically messed around the the euphoria engine, see ingenuity. For companies like R* , Lucas Arts, and MM to create such innovative titles from scratch, is quite an accomplishment. Just look how far games have come since the little pixel characters to now, realistic and believable actions that are no longer scripted with animations, but created on the fly with the information its given. A lot of people don't give GTA 4 the appreciation it deserves. It isn't easy making such a fine detailed game that, afterwards, you hope to get the revenue in return for what was put into it. I like both games (GTA&TFU), and respect the devs so much more knowing that they care to put more effort into detail, even in the smallest of areas. Its only the beginning, and can only get better if people let it. Hell, Lucas Arts is implimenting euphoria into an Indiana Jones title and thats great, becuase I love euphoria and what it stands for. Its only there to give us gamers what we could only dream of seeing 10+ years ago, and now that its showing its face, people are being haters about it. Grow up will ya people. The future comes in transition, it will never JUST BE HERE. So maybe a little more respect for those games that are trying to take us to the next step in gaming would be great.

I'm not saying FU was a bad game. But in the top ten? According to the Times's list Force Unleashed was better than Metal Gear Solid 4. Innovation? Compare FU to MGS4s innovation and to be honest FU doesn't really compare. I can see where you're coming from about the euphoria engine, but I just think it was poorly implemented in FU. It was too inconsistant, and the ability to destroy things and mould things in a realistic manner was dissapointing, compared to say GTAIV. I think the idea behind the game was great, and before the game came out I was really excited for it because I had seen the euphoria gameplay trailers.

Euphoria is brilliant. Force Unleashed... not so much.

vivi, what it boils down to is this: does SW:TFU REALLY belong in a top ten list? umm, im gonna go ahead and say no. My opinion, its just not that great of a game, the euphoria engine is awesome, but it wont make every game that uses it a top notch game.

Time is just trying to stay relevant. And failing. Home as a Top 10 gadget -- or top 10 concept of the year even? Please. It looks cool and all, but not a top 10.

You know, I'm really happy for Home. Really.
All innovative and stuff, and it's gonna go expand itself and be just SO darn cool.
Just a little baby beta, it's gonna grow up to be so big and strong.
Awww.
Totally precious.

Now, can we have a release date?

cuz microsoft brain washes everyone. That how they got their 30% fail-rate system on the market, and how they got people to keep buying the crappy system after it red-ringed.

no, it's because Microsofts price point is currently lower than the Wii.

Yes, anyone who buys that one is going to get it in the shorts, but it's still half the cost of a base model PS3...

i was talking to someone on socom the other day and he told me he was playing his dads ps3 because his xbox red ringed for the third time. how rediculous can you get to keep buying or repairing a game system that is in fact inferior to the competition?
