PlayStation Home Makes TIME's Top 10 Gadget List For 2008
It may not be here just yet, but Sony is confident the open beta will launch before the year is out, and it appears TIME Magazine holds that same confidence.
Although it may be incorrectly labeled as a "gadget," PlayStation Home made TIME's Top 10 Gadget list for 2008, and this may come as a surprise to those in the video game world. It ain't really a gadget, but to be honest, we didn't believe something as innovative and edgy as Home would even be whispered in mainstream media for another year or two. They're typically way behind the curve, but perhaps TIME is just trying to make up for leaving Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots off their Top 10 Games list...considering that, maybe we shouldn't pay any attention to the Gadget selections. But anyway, here's TIME's description of their #10 pick for the Best Gadgets of 2008:
"After a number of launch delays, Sony's virtual world, "Home," gives folks one more reason to buy its pricey PS3 video game console. Users create their own human-looking avatar and get a virtual apartment near the "town square," a base of operations from which to socialize, play games and purchase an endless variety of Sony goods and services (think games, movies, music and more.) A cross between Second Life and the Sims, the service shows the promise of a commercial Metaverse. Price: free"
Well, of course we know all that, and the only thing left is to see the official launch announcement. We maintain that Home is no "gadget," but this is the type of advertising that could really help Sony. And besides, recognition of any kind is good, right?
