Pacific Rift Tops One Million Sold
The sales charts aren't overly predictable this holiday season, as great titles like Resistance 2 struggle in the UK and EA supposedly falls short on their sales estimates for Rock Band 2. But Sony has a clear-cut winner with MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and the charts reflect the consumer's appreciation.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, the top-notch off-road racer has topped the one million sold mark worldwide, so said Worldwide Studios head man Michael Denny. Launched at the start of November, the title had to deal with many of the year's best, but still managed to sell exceedingly well in most all major territories. Perhaps it helped that there weren't too many racing games to compete with Pacific Rift, but then again, the review scores were strong enough by themselves to influence sales. Denny said they were "pleased with the high Metacritic rating of 82%" and now Sony is reaping the rewards of producing a solid, entertaining racer that should be on the holiday list of many PS3 owners. If you haven't tried it already, this sequel is just about everything it should be, and Evolution Studios is already in the process of preparing plenty of downloadable content. When it comes to racers, developers know there's a whole lot they can add in the future via DLC, so we'll keep you posted on that.
Besides, with so many relatively short titles out there, something like MotorStorm will certainly give you plenty of bang for your buck, which is something else consumers may have considered. If you only have $60 to spend and you want maximum entertainment hours, you can rarely go wrong with sports and racing games.

I come back to quality of the product and what you are paying for; I have "wasted" ( to some degree ) money on games I should have thought long and hard about before buying... not that they were extra-ordinarily bad... its just that I want to reward quality and technical excellence... for me KILLZONE 2 is technical excellence, GT5 is technical excellence (when completed), GoWIII will probably be of technical excellence... there are games, few and far between, that really prove the developers have gone out of there way to make it the best they possibly can...
I don't believe "Pacific Rift" has reached that level of technical excellence yet...
Saying this; my general gripes that make me annoyed and upset are:-
1] Unecessary clipping of 3D objects in an engine due to the camera pov simply ripping through them.
2] In GT5, excessive "real-time" Focus Pulling (background blurring) effects on replay - watch them and see how messy the graphics become.
3] Non AA, when most engines running in 720p could easily include at least x2 AA. Again, in my opinion, down to the inability of developers to code properly for the platform... look at the "juggies" at the start of Mirror's Edge - wheres the AA!
4] Blocky shawdow casting across 3D surfaces... that seems to occur in most game engines on the PS3... "next generation" was not supposed to give us these technical problems... smooth hires shadow casting was supposed to have been the order of the day...
5] Mix bag of textures... even the triple A titles can be blamed for "bad" or "low-res" textures to some degree - why? Why is there not a standard set across all textures by texture artists... who is checking there work.. in CoD IV CoD V... some surfaces are excellent, whilst others look terribly blurred and low res when getting up close... So far though KillZone 2 gives me hope, so does MGS4 - from what I have seen...
Speed way tracks are a little bland in GT5, not much there I suppose... but the grass patterns don't look that inspiring. Final game should be better I assume! City textures could also be improved to be a little sharper, especially textures that are supposed to show objects in windows... those can look abnormal depending on angle and lighting!
some general thoughts... much of the problems above plague cross-platform titles... understandable to some degree... but the exclusives should not have basic engine anomalies if coded , optimised and textured properly

You and I couldn't get a match together on KZ2 so maybe we can on MSPR. That or COD WAW as I know you have that one too.

If they included ramming in this one who knows guns or something in the next one but then that would make it Motorstorm Deathrace or something haha, hey not a bad idea though, then again you would end up concentrating on shooting someone rather racing and could end up crashing a lot more.

I am now salivating at the prospect of "Killzone II" and "God Of War III"... with a few other titles skirting about, those two are my top priority and am saving my dollars for them!
Update > One particular abnormality which irritated me in the first game was the terrible raw "real-time" shadow casting anomalies which were very pronounced. I don't know if all of you remember but when replaying crashes... once the camera tracked about the broken wreck the shadow casting looked terribly blocky and badly cast across objects and landscape outcrops.
The physics were bitty, and in slow motion could look quite bad with regards to how the 3D objects came to rest on the ground. I think with a little time and a few updates the team could have patched up the engine on the first game to fix these anomalies... I have no idea if the second game, "Pacific Rift", fixes these problems... I guess I will never know!
