"PS3 Has No Games" Argument Needs To Die A Terrible Death
I think we're all aware of the enduring nature of stigmas and stereotypes - it's why we still have parents believing games are just for kids - and if we're not careful, certain stereotypes can run rampant and directly influence consumers who are seeking information. Since the launch of the PlayStation 3, the default argument against it, presented by almost everyone from retailers to idiotic fanboys, is this: "but it has no games!"
I was in a Best Buy today, with no intention of stopping near the game section (I was shopping for other people; 'tis the season and all that), and I overheard one of those "Geek Squad" register biscuits trying to help a customer decide between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I paused and pretended to take an interest in the accessories display, as I'm always interested to hear just how ill-informed the retailers really are. At first, it sounded like he knew what he was talking about: Live is a slightly better online service but the Network is free, the 360 still suffers from a system failure but things are getting better, and if you opt for the Arcade version, you can nab a 360 for only $199. Yes, all true. Then I heard it- "but the one thing you have to remember is that the PS3 still doesn't have many games out." I wanted to rip open a Wii-mote and jam it into his eye socket. Can we get past the outdated ignorance, please?
At the start of the PS3's lifespan and well into 2007, there was no denying the system had a lack of software. It tends to happen; it has happened to just about every console in history, and that most certainly includes the Xbox 360. But for some reason, everyone has just forgotten about that and still assume the PS3 "has no games." Right. If you check either GameRankings or Metacritic (I don't care what source you use; the results will be very similar), you will notice that both the PS3 and 360 have almost the same number of titles rated over 80% in 2008, and the same holds true for the elite gems over 90%. Furthermore, with the exception of Gears of War III, the PS3 exclusive lineup in 2008 - featuring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, and Resistance 2 - rocks the house, and third-party developers have basically worked past all their initial PS3 issues. The days of the pathetic 360-to-PS3 port are gone.
Yes, the 360 has been out for a full year longer, so of course it has "more" games. But as it currently stands, are we really going backwards and talking about games like Kameo? What we're talking about is the here and now, and besides a few exclusives here and there (Fable II and Left 4 Dead are worth mentioning), the PS3 has just about everything the 360 has, and then some. Here's a look at the year's best, and I doubt many will disagree with the list:
- Grand Theft Auto IV
- LittleBigPlanet
- Bioshock
- Gears of War 2
- World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- Fallout 3
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
- Braid
- Rock Band 2
- God of War: Chains of Olympus
- Dead Space
- Left 4 Dead
- Resistance 2
- Burnout Paradise
- Devil May Cry 4
- Fable II
- FIFA Soccer 09
- Prince of Persia
- Wipeout HD
- Soul Calibur IV
- Sins of a Solar Empire
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
- Guitar Hero: World Tour
- Far Cry 2
- MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
- Call of Duty: World at War
- Mirror's Edge
- Pure
These are 30 of the year's best, and and of this list, 21 are available on the PS3 while 19 are available on the 360, and there are 6 that are exclusive to the PS3 while 4 are exclusive to the 360. Overall, the PS3 has 91 titles that have an average review score of 80% or higher at GameRankings, and the 360 has 139 at 80% or higher. Now, factor in that the 360 came out one full year earlier, and you end up with this statistic: the 360 has produced 139 80%+ games in just over 3 years time while the PS3 has produced 91 80%+ games in just over 2 years time. ...I'm not very good at math, but I believe the quality ratio is pretty damn similar.
Anyway, I'm just sick and tired of hearing this ridiculous argument from people who claim to know something about video games. There are pluses and minuses for every system out there, but in no way can the argument regarding lacking software for the PS3 be used. Not ever again. Hell, 2009 will add exclusives like Killzone 2 (wait for the explosion, 360 fanboys), Heavy Rain, God of War III (wait for that explosion, too), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and possibly Gran Turismo 5...I'm sorry but what will either Microsoft or Nintendo produce to compete with that? The PS3 owned the exclusive battle in 2008, and it will do so again in 2009. That is the prediction.

It's always been arguable that the 360 had a better line-up than the PS3 (though I wouldn't have agreed after the one-year mark), but the Wii has NEVER had a better collection of games than the PS3 (not saying it has no games, just that you can count the quality games on two hands).

they tell me:
ps3 has no games
ps3 and psn sucks
"i had my xbox for 2 years without a single problem"
xbox has no more RROD
we don't need or want blu ray
.... so? they never tell me what about the ps3 that sucks. i have a xbox and it died. i still play xbox games on my roomate's xbox but we can tell it is dying.
if ps3 has no games, what does xbox have other than halo and gears?
if u take the first year of xbox and first year of ps3 games, they are equal.
basically there are too many ppl sucking on microsoft's big crappy cocks.
do u know how many gamestop employees are xbox fans? and do u know how many of them lies to the customers?
ppl use their xbox to take a sh** on more than actually playing them.

The PS3 is (contrary to it's older bothers) the underdog of this competition, but so was the GameCube, Dreamcast, Saturn and N64 at one point. Although these systems never won, they did bring some unique and exclusive titles that you couldn't play anywhere else.
I have yet to play such a title on the PS3 right now (I like colors in my games), but I'm sure that occasion will come soon enough.

To clarify what was already easy enough to understand, I basically said that the PS3 has the potential to be the console of this generation that everyone will own for a few particular titles that you won't be able to play anywhere else.
As for games with lacks of color, that's my personal choice. I don't like games that try too hard to to reach realism and that kind of preference limits my choices right now.

I'm surprised you're not seeing it. The PS3 is following the same pattern that the Saturn, N64, DC, GameCube. None of these consoles won their respected war, but they each had some killer games that you couldn't play anywhere else (Zelda OOT, Virtua Fighter 2, Soul Calibur, Metroid Prime, etc...).
The PS3 will get it's share of killer games that will make the purchase of a PS3 worth it. The PS3 is fortunate, it will see a sale growth for 3 reasons in the next couple of years:
1- It will get it's own exclusive apps (it has too)
2- The price for the 40GB model will drop to $299 (When M$ and SONY denies a price drop, there's usually a price drop)
3- HDTV penetration will boom in 2009 because of the DTV Switch and because of the price drop on most LCDs
2009 will be SONY's big break, I guaranty it. I don't believe that it will catch up to the Wii and 360, but with more consumers purchasing more than one console now and days, the system in the race.

Which of these games has a lot less color that you are talking about? i'll give you resistance fall of man, but it truly sounds like you are grabbing at straws here.
the only thing the ps3 has in common with those other systems is being in "last" place.

the_importer is a poorly disguised Wii fan, who I have seen commenting many times over at gonintendo.com. He is not to be taken seriously here at this website.
@ the_importer: Stop letting your bias blind you. I prefer my PS3, but that didn't stop me from loving Mario Kart or Fire Emblem. Why don't you try playing Uncharted, LBP, or Eternal Sonata and tell me how long it takes you to find more than three distinct colors.

And you're still wrong. That would be the Wii.
As Ben demonstrated, the PS3 has virtually any game you'd want to play. It is in no way in the position the Cube was in, even early in its lifetime when it was still getting cross-platform games.

Anyway, of the dozens of games out there, you'll find some color. Enchanted Arms was graphically beautiful, even if it was linear. Oblivion is dark as death, but that's the mood for it I guess. Fallout is another gritty one. Of course, I only play RPGs so, that's all I got for you.
As far as the last place thing... I have to agree with someone else that said that will be the Wii. Its a hyped up console that they use artifical economic controls to maintain demand for. I'm not a huge fan. its good for the kids, but as an adult, I find swinging a remote control in a poor attemp to simulate a sword slash irritating. Maybe I was jaded by the poor response in the Dragon Quest game, but I think the whole motion control gimmick is going to fade. Unless they improve the accuracy, reaction time, and range, this is going to fall by the way-side. The only way to keep it going it to introduce a new gimmick (wii-cart, wii-fit, etc) and keep up the deluge of games.

need a exclusive killer RPG that can rival square enix. white knight chronicles alone might not be enough. of course, sony didn't wasn't aware of the betrayal of square enix.
ps3 doing well in all genre of the games except for the RPG department. RPG is where asians would buy a ps3.
if u can get japanese to buy the ps3. than the japanese developers will make more games for the ps3. which will result in western expansion.
than the western world will buy the ps3.
but as of now, the japanese developers wants to go to the western world cuz japan's ps3 sales are ok but not that good.
although not a direct rival, the nintendo wii is a hinderance to the ps3 cuz consumers have more choices to choose from. the focus is turned away from the hardcore video games.
the decline of world economy has also hindered the ps3 sales. great technology but ppl just don't have the cash to shell out. u can argue about the xbox being just as expensive, but at least consumers can play a game for 200 bucks.
with so much negative issues, sony has to crack up the notch a bit more. the focus should be
"lets beat the xbox's install base numbers"
with a tough enemy at hands, sony needs to start throwing cash at some of these developers to dominate this industry once more.

So Ben mentions the exclusive lineup already primed: Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, and GoWIII, plus we got White Knight on the way. What's that other system got for '09? It's gonna have to beat those 4, I'm on the edge of my seat.

For all of us as Sony and PS fans, the majority of us are RPG fans with Sony and PS throughout the generations, therefore, it is hard to swallow the fact that the FPS is replacing the RPG genre as the console defining genre. Its hard to let go the association of PS with great JRPGs, they came together as always, but not on PS3 yet, it is for that very reason, I am still complaining about the PS3 in that perspective. Anything else, I will be loyal to Sony and PS to the end.
P.S. If WKC, FF13, FFv13, Star Ocean 4, ICO3,Chrono Break (my imagination for this one), plus 10 more similar quality JRPGs hit the PS3 around the similar time, then the statement will be gone once for all. Such is my opinion.

Whichever system gets the bulk of RPGs wins the war: Nes vs Master, Snes vs Genesis, Psx vs Saturn & N64, Ps2 vs Dreamcast & Gamecube. THAT'S why M$ wants em, but door-shoving tactics being what they are over there on the lunatic fringe, quality has not been taken into consideration. For that, we all suffer.

Here are the reasons that why those claims are still valid to a point. I REPEAT: to a point. Obviously the PS3 has games worth playing or I wouldn't be on this site to begin with.
A big number of multiplat games came to the PS3 needing patches. A number also came to the 360 first.
The other reason is that Microsoft advertises games -- both exclusive and multi-plat -- much more aggressively than Sony. They put a lot more buzz behind them, they put more stuff out there that's neat to look at for average people.
Honestly, I'm surprised the average person even knows the PS3 exists -- and lets face it, most the people working at electronics stores these days are as big a group of mouth breathers as the general public. I've seen ten times the ads for the PSP up here in the bay area than I have for the PS3.
With that out of the way, I completely reject your list Ben on two simple facts.
1. Bioshock came out last year.
2. WoW might have been a great game. WotLK is just an expansion pack. It only sold so much because WoW was so popular. If this qualified, then you might as well put Halo's Legendary Map Pack on the list or some other ridiculous add on. Maybe the Dead Space DLC?

And sorry to burst your bubble, but WoW: WotL is on a much larger scale than halo map packs. Sorry, its just the truth, i don't even play WoW and would prefer halo over it, but even i can see that. Even if you had of mentioned recon, my point would still stand that WoW is much bigger than halo, period.
Like advent said, look at what expansion packs did to their respective communities ( and what Halo recon might do ) They keep the gamers hooked for a lot longer than they would have and add so much. Starcraft expansion was HUGE, so was Diablo 2 expansion (which is what advent meant to say)
As far as rejecting the list because of two games? wow way to miss the point of what was written...

Ben, you forgot White Knight Chronicles! It's gunna be the best RPG (depending on the success of FF13 and V13 if they're even released next year, I doubt it) and the 360 fans are gunna say it sucks cuz let's face it, the best RPG they have is Fable 2 and even though That's probly good (haven't seen or played it yet) WKC is gunna be way better.

I think this topic needs to die a terrible death...quickly
All systems have decent games in their own respect, Sony needs to advertise more and educate the general public. We all know this We as Sony fans should help out where we can to help educate the masses.
If you see something like that happen in a store, why not ask about reliability issues on the xbox, or does it have a blu-ray player...not in a confrontational manner, but in a civil manner. Mention games like Drake's Fortune, LBP, MGS4 and R2. Or free to play online. Or HOME...the facebook people should love that.
For those of you that think that Sony should ignore the mass "ignorant" consumer, in favor of the "hardcore gamer" Pull your head out of you a$$ for a little while and look around. If they only supplied to the hardcore, they would be out of business real quick. Like it or not but the "real" gamers need the Casuals/Ignorants to keep the industry alive, they outnumber us, by a lot.
Instead of complaining about how everyone is ignorant and doesn't know as much about gaming as you do, why not go to your local gamestore and help educate? It's the Christmas season people are shopping, help them justify why they should spend more on a Sony. Next time you buy a game, take a minute to educate a parent what they should get their kids for Christmas, and how they can use the system to watch movies in HD themselves. I know I've already sold a few systems over an x-box (much to the chagrin of store employees) in gamestores/walmarts/best buys just because people saw how stoked I was on the PS3. You know why? Because the store employee is paid to tell them what to buy. The guy/girl that is standing in the store who has already bought/used the systems is on their side.
Like I said, Be civil, Speak clearly and not like you just crawled out from under a rock and do something about the problem, instead of just pretending it doesn't exist or coming in here and bitching about it.
You don't like the situation? DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!

Mr. Geek Squad forgot to mention that xbox360 has no wi-fi (an adapter can cost up to $100 so it is actually a better deal to get an 80gb. PS3 than it is to get a 60gb. 360 and then get a wi-fi adapter). He/she/it also forgot to mention that over the past year PSN has already caught up with Live and now they have all the same bells 'n wissles. The only difference is that one of them is free and the other one can cost up to over $60 a year (if ordered via the silver pack and not the gold). I can also bet you that he/she/it didn't mention the Experience vs. Home Beta debate, which one can play BD or support up to 7.1 channel surround sound, which one has a stronger CPU with 8 cores, or which one will be yesterday's news in a couple years (M$ will desert the 360 like they did with the original xbox once the 720 comes out).

I've played the Wii at a friend's house, it's cute and some of the games are indeed fun, but it's not on the same playing field. For all it's gameplay "ingenuity" it's stuck in the past, a glorified gamecube on mild steroids. It's like comparing the original Playstation to Sega's 32X.
The 360 is indeed much closer performance wise and does have some multimedia capabilities. But it wasn't a forward thinking system, still using DVD format rather than stepping up to HD of some sort and obviously rushed to market as the still occuring hardware faliures attest to.
While both of these base systems are indeed less expensive than the PS3, the many components imbedded in the PS3 (wi-fi, blu-ray, harddrive, etc.) sold seperately would cost twice what you paid for the all-in-one experience.
Remember, you get what you pay for. And I know as I plunked down cash for my PS3 I was getting more than just a game console, I was getting a highly reliable piece of equipment that is the star of my multimedia show, guaranteed to be supported for at least the next 8 years. Can you say the same for the wee Wii and MS box?

Whether or not a game is 'good' is just as subjective as whether or not a song is 'good'.
In the Best Buy case, the clerk was in the wrong. Present the facts and let the customer ask questions. I used to be a manager for a music store, and there was an older customer who was buying some alternative cds. I made a comment about buying for someone else and she was buying for herself. Oops! I could have handled it differently instead of putting my bias on the situation.

I couldn't agree more..
This is why 2009 is going to be the year of the PS3. Sony has alot of great games. The DTV switch is going to be the gamebreaker in the videogame console war.

I think the gamebreaker will eventually be the storage capacity. Even if XBox comes out with a Blu-Ray add-on device, it would be vor video playing only and they still can't play games off of it. They'll be resorting to more multiple-disc games when PS3 will just start using more of the blu-ray disc capacity.

Its been two years since launch, and all we've really added to that is Fallout 3 (spectacular!), Valkyria Chronicles, and Eternal Sonata (haven't played those yet). Disgaea is a strategy game with RPG elements (at least the first two were), and Marvel Ultimate Alliance is just *not* an RPG.
So we have... uh... a half-dozen relevant games for me in the first two years. If we compare that to the launches of Genesis, SNES, PSX, and PS2, it doesn't even compare. So I have a big, loud, hot blu-ray player. I can't say I'm not disappointed. But I still wouldn't get an XBox.

I just tend to ignore them when they use this. If it's a store clerk, sometimes I'll barge in, but only if they're using it in an extremely obnoxious way.
