LittleBigPlanet Tops 1 Million Sold?

While it remains true that LittleBigPlanet isn't selling quite as quickly as Sony would've liked, it's still climbing up the charts...slowly but surely.

According to European site PS3Hype, the little platformer that could has topped 1 million copies sold worldwide. Please bear in mind that this information is in no way official, but based on recent sales statistics, it should be close (if not dead-on accurate). They list out the LBP sales on a week-to-week basis for all three major territories, and the results prove the final platinum number. Oddly enough, the game is really doing terribly in Japan, while it seems the U.S. and Europe equally appreciate Media Molecule's effort. Perhaps this isn't the type of title to appeal to the Japanese market, but then again, maybe it just needs more time to gather steam. Remember, although it released between the last week of October and the first week of November worldwide, Sony only recently kicked-off the massive marketing campaign. How come we saw the first LBP commercial only a few days ago...? Oh right, because it's Sony's marketing and advertising that remains untimely and lackluster, regardless of the software or hardware. Kinda depressing, but whatever.

Even so, it seems LBP should continue to be a success. It may not be the blockbuster skyrocketing success Sony was hoping for, but if the million mark has indeed been passed, they can still look forward to the future with bright eyes. This is a game that should never be out-of-date, what with its emphasis on the PSN community, so unlike other games, sales of LittleBigPlanet shouldn't die off completely.

Thats odd. I expected Japan to buy the majority of its sales.

I have to ask tho. You think this title will have a lasting appeal?

I do, since the whole appeal is the vast number of user-created levels posted online, the lasting appeal of this title is something that will never stop until the PS3 is wayyyy old news. And that's a ways off.

GeoW : 5.52m

GeoW2 : 3.35m So Far

This is kinda weird because I never thought Motorstorm would do better than LBP. I guess with so many games around on PS3 people aren't paying enough attention to LBP. Shame

1 mil is good for a new ip that's not the usual high selling shooter. LBP is doing very good. It would definitely do better if the PS3 had an install base equal to the 360.

Same, most of my friends(360 owners) don't care for LBP. That doesn't mean that if the PS3 was not lagging behind the 360 by 6.5-7 mil consoles that the number of LBP would stay the same. The numbers would be definitely higher. At least another few hundred thousand copies would probably be added.

Why the hell am I defending LBP so much. Oh that's right, the game is awesome. =)

Any 360 gamer who "doesn't care for LBP" wouldn't know a good game if it punched them in the eye.

If the bias stems from the "cuteness" factor or just because its on a different system, they should be immediately forced to turn in their Gamer Cards and go sit in a corner to think about what they've done.

I saw LBP commercials several weeks ago around. I was originally totally psyched for LBP but after reading alot of reviews and such I never ran out to buy it primarily because the single player game is supposed to be short and cheap and this is a product that they are relying on users to create levels for to keep the game's life cycle going; two big factors that turned me off. I really don't like any game that requires multiple players to get the full fun level from and I really didn't like the idea of paying full price for a game that's gonna rely on users to create what will eventually be the bulk of the content. As for building my own levels, give me a break I barely have enough time just to play a game for a few hours anymore so that was no selling point to me. Anyways just pointing out that while LBP may be revolutionary, etc, it's got a few things going against it when it comes down to raking out $60 which is a small fortune in today's economy (at least here in the States).

Whooka,u don't have to make ur own stages. And u don't have to play stages w/ others. The game is still fun w/o it. LBP is a value-added buy. Whether u want to use that added value or not, it is up to u. Similar to how R2 has 3 games in one (Campaign, Co-op, Competitive). You don't have to play the Competitive if u don't want to. The other two is great. It is still a great title.

The levels made by Media Molecule are not short. If u r trying to run though the game...than the game is quick about (8-10hrs). But u will play stages a least twice(16-20hrs), because u can't collect all the items and get 100% complete in one play-through.

Rent it and see how u like it.

One thing you're missing my friend is that although the MM levels can be run through, doing a single player playthrough of the user-generated levels on the network is still a blast, and it means your $60 pays for free wacky fun from your fellow creators worldwide for probably the next ten years or more.

I guess I should sign up for some game rental type place as I really would like to try out LBP, it may convince me to buy it as originally I was psyched (i'm a sucker for platform games). I just haven't wanted to risk it since I was unsure if I'd like it and Gamespot pays f*** all for games these days if I wanted to sell it or something. Sony needs more demos! It seems like they demo everything for the sexbox360 but maybe coz they're charging for the service.

Gotta say Whooka, if you want the most bang for your $60, LBP is the best bet on the market, for any console, no joke.

Not only are the provided levels of decent length, they are some of the most imaginative levels I've ever played. And yes, it takes several playthroughs to get every thing, though in some cases it also requires more than one player, but that's part of the fun, figuring out the mulitplayer puzzles. Also consider this, playing through the levels again, is NEVER a chore, its fun everytime.

Then on top of the first class single player game, you are provided the tools to make just about anything your brain can think up. Your levels plus other people's created levels gives this game nearly unlimited replayability. I'm serious when I say that no other game out there can match it for creativity and quirky fun.

If you're a fan of platformers as you claim, you owe it to yourself to check it out. We'll see you online!

i will REPEAT once again, LBP did NOT sell over a million. IF it actually sold more than a million, don't you think the PR for sony would have mentioned it in yesterday's press release when they were defending Nov's NPD numbers?

and please, next time if you're going to write an idiot article, please give us actually numbers from sony, NPD, media crate, etc, and NOT VG chartz

You're probably right but the article never said it was 100% positive LBP was over 1 mil. He put a ? at the end of the article. Another thing, VGChartz is usually very close on most of their numbers probably give or take 15 to 20 percent. LBP might not be a 1 mil but it most probably is not far from it.

Why do you even care X-Bot? Don't you have anything better to do with your time, like maybe play some 360 games?

Oh, wait ... you can't because your 360 has the RROD.

Either that or you beat Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead and have no exclusives left to play.
