Video Game Awards 2008: GTAIV Takes Top Honors

The SpikeTV Video Game Awards are over, and all the big awards have been handed out...which hot title did you expect to take the coveted Game of the Year award?

Well, regardless of what you thought, the honor went to Grand Theft Auto IV this year. If it weren't for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, we would've agreed wholeheartedly, but as it stands, we can only half-heartedly agree. GTAIV also nailed down the Best Action/Adventure title of 2008, which is another impressive win for Rockstar's epic crime drama. MGS4 did manage to snag Best Graphics and Best Original Score, and although LittleBigPlanet lost out in a variety of genres, Media Molecule picked up Studio of the Year, which we actually find a bit surprising. It's good to see the developers of one of the most entertaining and innovative games of the generation garner some well-deserved recognition, though. Oh, and Fallout 3 took Best RPG while Gears of War 2 won Best Shooter, although we seriously doubt anyone is shocked to see these results. With so many awesome games this year, people can argue until they're blue in the face regarding awards, but we ask that you take things easy in the Comments. None of this, "GTAIV SUCKS; the idiots should've given it to MGS4!!!"

As for PSX Extreme's Game of the Year Awards, we don't conduct those until the fat lady has sung; December 31 and no earlier. Will our decisions gel with those of the VGAs...? Who knows? Maybe some will, maybe some won't.

while i wont call them idiots, MGS4 was definitely my choice, and GTAIV wasn't even a close second: more like fifth or sixth.

I can understand gears for best shooter, although it would have been a supremely close second to my pick: Resistance 2

And if Mercs 2 had taken another couple of months in the polishing room, it woulda been kickass instead of the fizzle it was. It would have been my choice for best action/adventure if it was executed perfectly and it ran like a PS3 game, instead of behaving a lot like its predecessor.

Yeah, GTA wasn't even on the same continent that I keep my radar on. Probably why I didn't buy or rent it. It was fun to watch the massive hype train roll past though So, I'll /shrug and try to decide my own game of the year......I think it was Brickbreaker on my Blackberry.

I guess I agree with all the results except for GTA IV for goty although it was a good game, but we can only blame ourselves the gamers we were the ones that bought the game and hyped it.

It was not hyped at all. The game delivered on what was promised--A whole new GTA experience. Almost every true gamer bought it and loved it. It's not being over-praised at all in my opinion. I think Rockstar set the bar for the rest of the GTA's to come this time. The only thing that could happen in the next GTA, other than obviouse changes (Such as city) is that it is only going to get better and better.

Funnily enough, X-play's GoTY was Fable 2, I laughed when they read it. I'm sure its a decent title but I don't see it upending the other competitors, shows what they know.

X-play is a joke. They had a GOTY poll on their website, and the 4 choices were Gears2, Fable II, Left4Dead, and Fallout 3. They should just change the name of the show to "XboxPlay."

I concur, atleast it was multi plat for goty. In my opinion MGS4 is game of the year hands down. MM deserved the Best Studio award. And Gears2 shouldn't have even been mentioned, it was a huge let down.

Most people I know don't agree with the decision they made for Game of the Year. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Grand Theft Auto 4 (haven't finished the game, too busy) is amazing, but as far as Game of the Year? I don't think so. This should have clearly gone to Metal Gear Solid 4. Kojima productions basically put their heart into that game.

Note how the guy who received the award said...

"Oh I can't believe we won..."

I'm sure a lot of gamers were on the same page.

Not only that, where was Resistance 2? It wasn't even there <_<. It's clear to me they went Multi-platform to not piss anyone off or because it's been the best selling game from the nominees.

In any case, these awards by Spike shouldn't be taken seriously. The host wasn't funny, the music was horrendous, and most of the world premieres were terrible.

What matters most is what game will leave you memories that last a lifetime and I'm sure most of you agree that game is Metal Gear Solid 4.

I'm not gonna talk about the winners of the night. I never agree w/ award shows. I watching the football game anyway. Go Cowboys!!!

But I did check out the trailers online:
GoWIII looked sicking! Jaffe's words were understandable.
Uncharted 2 got me hyped.
Fight Night 4 finally got Iron Mike Tyson. That's gonna rule.
Jack Black is a fool esp. w/ that opening "sex scene". Comedy.
The new Gears maps looked cool.
And I think Brutal Legend should be good. "Tim FREAKIN Schafer!"

Lol, yes yes yes yes Cowboy fan to the death. I was born and raised in Dallas, and was there for the 90s dynasty (3 Superbowl wins) and the 49er rivalry (Damn u Jerry Rice & Steve Young!). But its all good, ReccaMan. Cowboys put the Giants in their place once again, Sony dropped trailers for Uncharted 2 and God of War III, and I finally passed Chapter 5 on Deadspace (playing on Hard).

Meh i just found GTAIV repetitive when i got to the 2nd island, i think MGS4,Fallout 3, Dead Space and Resistance 2 are all technically better games.

I was like "Damn, the biker gangs would have been awesome". I'm also just up to the point of meeting them in story mode from starting again, for the trophies.

I believe GTA4 deserved GOTY, MGS felt way over hyped to me, like I had to like everything, otherwise someone would flame me.

I can't comment on R2 or LBP yet, not played them, there potential gifts. : ) [either way, I'll have 'em both before the year is over]

MGS has my vote, LBP second, Resistance 2 third, and somewhere close to the bottom is GTA4. If you think GTA4 was innovated, play it again and come back and tell me exactly what made it great. Im a big GTA fan but I won't be swayed by a lesser game with pretty graphics. Gameplay is all that matters, and MGS is King.

I enjoyed GTA 4 just as much as the previous GTA's. My top game was MGS 4 though without question. Gears 2 was decent enough as was Fable 2. I have to say though I enjoyed both Gears and Resistance 2 as much as one another both were great to play.

If MGS doesnt get the only Award that actually matters it doesnt matter.That is the Goty on this website. If it does go to GTA4 I will be thoroughly dissapointed.MGS has the wow factor and the fun factor and the X factor!

I dont believe this. I was confident MGS4 would take it. I was so confident I stopped watching it early, just because I didnt like the show's overall feel. I think it would be better if the show was more mature like the music awards n less formal than the grammies. Call me crazy, but I do not like seeing almost naked girls walking on stage for a video game award.

Anyhow MGS4 has my vote.

I found that GTAIV got to repetitive for me to enjoy fully, and its missions felt like they were structured to simularily to previous GTAs, though it's still a great game. But as good as MGS4? I think not! That's good that Media Molecule won best studio though, they deserved it.
