SCEA Officially Reveals God Of War III

If you tuned into the SpikeTV Video Game Awards last night, you were lucky enough to see the teaser trailer for God of War III - which we will have for you this week - and you likely wanted more details on SCEA's new action slash-fest.

Thankfully, SCEA issued a press release this morning, officially unveiling GoWIII for PlayStation 3 owners. They mention the game's "groundbreaking depth of scale that is four times larger than its predecessor" on the PS2 (God of War II), and the team will implement an entirely new game engine built "from the ground up" along with an "elaborate plot." The premise has Kratos working his way through Mt. Olympus and even Hell in order to wreak his terrible vengeance on those who have betrayed him, and yes, those double-chained blades will be back in full force. "Intricate puzzles" make their return as well, and SCEA reemphasized those stunning visuals that everyone has been raving about.

"With texture resolutions being quadrupled since God of War II, God of War III will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos' fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale with many more enemies on-screen and be able to interact with levels like never before."

Game Director Stig Asmussen said the team realizes they "have large shoes to fill" after previous GoW installments, but he "guarantees" that GoW fans will get exactly what they've been waiting for "and much more." The only bad news?  They say this will be the "final chapter in the epic series," so that's kinda disappointing...just a trilogy?  No GoWX?  Anyway, the release further reminded us of all the critical acclaim this franchise has received; "key publications" including OPM, Game Informer, IGN, EGM, GamSpot, GamePro, GameDaily, and yes, even good ol' PSX Extreme (we gave God of War II co-Game of the Year along with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune in 2007) were on the list. So yes, God of War III is indeed coming...although we still don't have a release date just yet. Stay tuned for more.

I just downloaded the trailer from the PSstore and watched it frame by frame. OMG. You can see the emotions of enemies. Kratos was holding on to the eye lid of a cyclops and it looked worried/scared and he stabbed it in the neck and it looked like it was in pain. The centaur at towards the beginning was amazing too. It was raging when Kratos dodged it's attack and swooped back and stabbed it.

Another cool thing is at 00:25 there are no less than 2 dozen enemies on screen.

The best part about the trailer is...I think it takes place on the Titan, Gaias back!!

00:16 to 00:18 you Kratos is on the back of a cyclops and there are trees in the background (just like on Gaia's back) and the whole screen shifts and the cyclops starts to fall.

00:19 to 00:21 there is definitely a sideways tree. A cyclops is hanging on for dear life. Kratos is on top of the cyclops' head, blade firmly planted in it's eye. Kratos jumps off and grabs onto some winged beast.

I am so ******* excited for this masterpiece.

Apparently the new trailer that was released to the public was from an old build of the game...

Sad to hear this is the final outing for Kratos, the series has garnered so much attention and is in such high demand that i am sure sales of the third release can persuade them to change their minds.

I'm actually not upset that it's the last game in the franchise. Four games is enough for any story. There are only so many gods you can kill. You can't just start making them up.

The trailer looked awesome.

Kratos wouldn't need to always kill gods, think about it...Kratos fought in an army prior to making a pact with a god for powers to win a war...now you can do a wicked prequel where Kratos is leading his troops into various wars so you are no longer looking at fighting huge bosses but rather massive amounts of men on the ground...this is where online multiplayer could come in handy ;)

A trilogy eh ? (well forgot about the PSP game) Maybe they want to finish it off top of the pile like sometimes it is best to end on a high. You wouldn't want God Of War 4 to be crap after 3 being brilliant so it is understandable why it won't be done. I bet though if it does really well and sells millions they may consider making a 4th one unless they kill Kratos off.
maybe they will introduce new characters to take it a different way to make something a bit different. Let's hope so.

They should quit while their on top 3 excellent games is enough 2 make the game a timeless legend. They can always take the same fomular & emplement it in a knew setting African/ASIAn & tweak & change the game to suit the setting.

What everyone has to realise is that what was in the trailer was IN GAME graphics! Do you understand how friggin' epic this game to going to look, play, sound, and...BE? If this doesn't jam pack a blu-ray, I'll be a little disappointed but at the same time it's GoW so maybe not :P

Damn it! Why are they ending this story? Kickass Kratos could've gone on for years. They are grilling yet another cash cow!!! F-it. Hope they take ALL the time they need.

I don't have a problem with them ending it, just like I didn't with Solid Snake, when it's damn good and any further iterations would just screw with the legend then it's time to go. I will thoroughly enjoy this game and then, well if they want to, there are lots of other Gods always pissed off about one thing or another that might like a trilogy of their own.
