Will PS3 Exclusives Dominate GoY Genre Awards In 2009?

Well, forgive us if we make a prediction. Everyone else is allowed to do it every now and then, so why shouldn't we be able to issue an opinion on what we consider to be the painfully obvious?

In 2008, the trio of PS3 exclusives made a significant impact, as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 represented big boosts to the system's library. Everyone continually talks about exclusive titles these days, even though in this generation, most exclusives have gone the way of the dodo and 2D console side-scrollers. But perhaps it's not so much about power or even top-quality software; perhaps it's also about variety. After seeing the results of the Video Game Awards yesterday, I was left wondering: could PS3 exclusives completely dominate the genre/category awards in 2009? Think about it.

Killzone 2 clearly has the most potential for Best FPS of the year, although there are sure to be plenty of competitors. This is the game that has absolutely everyone talking, and after spending time with the beta and single-player campaign, we have told you that Guerilla's blockbuster will live up to the admittedly monumental hype. We're hardly the only publication that says so.

God of War III and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will likely have to do battle with Gears of War 3 next year, but either of those PS3 exclusives have a legitimate shot at a Best Action/Adventure award. At this point, it's hard to doubt the magnificence of GoWIII, and based on the evidence - the original Uncharted - few are expecting anything less than a fantastic experience from the sequel.

White Knight Chronicles technically releases this year (December 25) in Japan, but of course, it won't be available until 2009 for North America. It's already shaping up to be a huge RPG; easily the most anticipated of the generation except for Final Fantasy XIII at this point. And remember, the rumor is that if it does well, Level 5 will sign on to develop games exclusively for Sony. Will 2009 be the first year where the PS3 finally has an exclusive RPG of the Year contender?

Heavy Rain should be a cinematic adventure experience that could be entirely unparalleled. You know all those separate awards like Best Graphics, Best Original Score, Studio of the Year, etc.? Well, Quantic Dream could make a similar statement in 2009 as Media Molecule did with LittleBigPlanet this year, and provided they come through on their claims, Heavy Rain could easily be one of the best of the generation.

Gran Turismo 5 will likely release towards the end of the year - Yamauchi has already laughed off the possibility of a 2010 launch - and if that's the case, you may as well give it any and all Best Racing Game awards right now. It could easily be in the running for Best Graphics, too, although it's more likely that one of the aforementioned titles takes that honor home. We already saw the potential in Prologue...just imagine what the final product will be like.

Really, the diversity amongst the PS3 exclusives next year is actually quite impressive. I find it difficult to find enough 360 exclusives to even begin to compare with the preceding list, and in the end, there could be a whole lot more reasons for gamers to purchase a PS3 next year...

FFXIII is a multiplat, there's no certainty that Ratchet 2 comes out next year, and I have my reservations for MAG and Infamous. Yakuza 3 likely won't be a competitor.

I don't see how Ratchet and Clank be a GOTY. I love the games so much but none of the previous ones have gotten the award.

I can't think of one 360 game that interests me next year but if I buy any multi platform games it will probably be on 360. (Except FF)

Ummm, no, he is clearly referring to GeOw 3, which, by the way, I read somewhere, GameSpot or Kotaku, will come out in Fall 2010.

all these titles look great but i would like sony to space them out next time. it is clear that this year the market got saturated towards the end and great games like lbp and valkriya chronicles have suffered because most people don't have enough time or money to try out something new .

it is pathetic to see this cause up until 3 months ago the market was virtually deserted after mgs4 and mediocre games like merceneries and saints row took advantage .

so its obviously sad to see lbp not getting its fair share . imagine what would have happened if killzone2 had arrived on time .

by this year i think u guys mean 09 in which case then mag is set to comeout in 09 but there is always a chance for delay infamous i am going to have to pass it just dose not look epic like the others , hope there is no r3 insomniac should just focous on r&c

Insomniac has half its staff working on each game, and it looks like they will continue the trend of alternating releases each year. I see no reason to worry about RaC being delayed in favor of Resistance3

I AM disappointed in Naughty Dog, who has chosen to focus on Uncharted instead of JaD. I will has an EPIC PISSED if Jak and Daxter go the way of Crash and Spyro.

There's just something about JaD that uncharted hasn't caught yet, a mojo that will be sorely missed.

yeah satrt by ordering a hit on there ad department , and improving community ,home most of all. defenetly more ads plz more ads and somebody already pointed this out but space your games a bit more u guys killed valkyria a realy good game cause u just threw it in the middle of every triple a title out there

I dunno...If you're looking at the line up now, then yeah. But how many early 08 games won/will win this year? I won't know until they're posted online...I try not to watch spike.

Even with GoW3 and Killzone2 announced for 09 already, I doubt that those are necessarily going to be the biggest games of the year.

No doubt Killzone 2 is goign to be big, and so is GoW3...

I'm just saying that usually early announced games are usually not the gold standard for the year, unless they're released late in the year.

gears 3??? well they did halo 3.something so i wont be surprised if gears 3 shows up. If the same sony marketing crew is there next year then dont expect a change in sales,those guys are worse than nintendo's mario spin offs. But Sony has some killer exclusives,next year's awards will grow tired of Sony's Third

if i where sony i would not mind buying the exclusvity final fantasy again i mean ms does it all the time and its working for them so why not try it plus it be another huge title for them in 09 and even if ff13 goes to 360 well then ppl will know that that will be the last ff in 360 reasurance, defenetly market there games a bit more show them to the ignorant public and they will buy it, and also need to keep in mind the small kids they have some market power too i mean you need some sort of lbp post story or something and sony needs to get its head straight i mean do you guys remeber the bmg music 360 stuff that was a huge screw up from sony defenetly pull all of there stuff from netflix and get some blu ray exclusive titles that will also help alot, plus how could sony even consider lending blu ray to ms a tech that they spent millions on and now possibly going to there biggest rival

Woah... my wallets gonna be empty next year, that's for sure. As people above me have said, Sony really need to space these games out. I would of given GT5 prologue the Best Graphics award for 08, I was just playing that and the interiors of the cars look amazing.

Sony still has their price range and the current economy to worry about. I really feel the price of the PS3 is a bit factor at the moment as with so many people broke and losing their jobs and investments (thanks to shady wall street folks who subsequently were rewarded with my tax money) I think it's a no brainer that a large percentage of people are going to go for a lower priced console. While I think the PS3 is priced reasonably considering the bluray player, included hd, etc, alot of folks are just thinking 'game console' so won't inherently see all the stuff they get for their money with a PS3, not to mention the longer life cycle it's going to enjoy over the competition, and just go cheap.

Yep. I agree. Sony needs to cut the PS3's price, regardless of value.

The average consumer who buys the 360 Arcade because it is $199 -- so they can buy little Timmy a new console and upgrade from the PS2 -- doesn't realize that once they add a hard drive and a wifi adapter, unless their TV happens to be near a ethernet port, and pay $50 a year for the online service the 360 Arcade suddenly costs as much as a PS3.

You know, maybe that is how Sony should market the PS3.

I agree whooka to me the PS3 is the best buy and right now you can get it with Uncharted and FREE online play. The Xbox comes with 2 kiddie games I care nothing for and as a xbox owner I do not pay for live. I think it is bs that to stream movies on xbox you have to be a gold subscriber. I enjoy both systems but I do prefer my PS3 and R2 online.

I have yet to see any great exclusives for MS coming out next year. But there will be a lot of great multiplat games like RE5, COD:MW2, and Bioshock 2, to give PS3 exclusives a run for their money.
