PS3 Video Blowout: VGA Premiers, Final Fantasy Drops Jaws

As most of our loyal readers know, we typically update our video section once a week, but this particular update is special for several reasons.

First of all, we have no less than 8 World Premier videos taken directly from their debut on SpikeTV's Video Game Awards. This includes first looks at the likes of God of War III, Brutal Legend, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and the recently announced Dante's Inferno. Although most of these are brief, many are quite promising and succeed in jacking our excitement level through the roof. Make sure you watch 'em all and when you're done, you need to move on to the two DKS3713 trailers for Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Look, we've all had our issues with Square-Enix over the past few years, and PlayStation 3 owners are none too happy with their business practices thus far this generation. But we absolutely promise you that all will be forgiven once you drink in the aforementioned trailers. They are quite lengthy, and without any doubt, they're the most drop-dead gorgeous videos we've seen to date. This is why the wait for both titles will be well worth it, and we are now fully convinced that FFXIII will be the definitive role-playing experience of the generation. It will be to the PS3 what FFXII was to the PS2, and to be perfectly honest, we also believe it will not look quite as good on the Xbox 360. Remember, S-E has already said they won't even start work on the 360 version until the PS3 version is done and complete; they built the White Engine from the ground up with Sony's machine in mind. Hence, the 360 version will need about 4 or 5 DVDs and likely won't look as good as the one high-def Blu-Ray version on the PS3.

Just trust us on this one: you can't miss the Final Fantasy trailers in question. Versus looks downright amazing, too. All these videos mentioned here will make your day, we promise!

Watch New PS3 Videos Now!!!

i wasnt all that excited about vs until that clip, it does look a lot darker, and as far as i can tell, these are two totally different games that have nothing to do with each other.

13 seems more fantasy based as far as locations are concerned while vs seems more set in modern settings, like its cars, locale, buildings, i just hope it can live up to the cutscenes that were shown for both games and i hope the gameplay rocks for both.

The Versus trailer was really nice. I love the darker setting and when I saw the blood from when one of the soldiers got impelled I was like yes a Final Fantasy title that is more realistic. It is about time that Square isn't afraid to create a more mature Final Fantasy.

Versus Trailer: WOW!!!! SO GANGSTA! I like that more than the regular FFXIII. It seems like SE has the best of the best working on this one, according to the credits. Will it stay exclusive? IDK. Only time will tell.

@Aaron
That's correct. The 3 FFXIII games are totally different (in story, gameplay, genre, all that). They are just on the same planet, i think.

Both games will be amazing, its what ive been waiting for, i admit i hated the 1st footage of VS (Still do) but this trailer has me relieved. the 1st trailer made it look like some over the top emo anime, but it looks alot boarder with the new trailer, as for being like FFXII was for the PS2, i hope not that game was horrifying, FFX for me was the definitive PS2 RPG.

by the looks of it , vs seems to have found its central theme which is dark and set in modern times and revolves around the protagonist .
ffxiii on the other hand had all of these characters and random events going on that it was difficult to grasp what it was about .

How can REASONABLE people make any judgments on any games based on Intro/Cutscenes only? Based on what I've heard from fans of FF, almost ALL have had nice 'visuals' but only about half of them are any good. Is that right?

Now if such scenes are rendered on-the-fly instead of pre-rendered video, there might be more value to attach to them -- keeping in mind that MANY horrible movies have nice-looking trailers.

I had never played any of the FF games, so was only relying on what I heard from bigger gaming fan friends of mine. I guess I misspoke about "only half being any good" as looking back, I think they only said a few (3 or 4) were "disappointing" compared to the others, not utter crap or anything.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers...other than to still mean that it seems ridiculous to make any judgments on a game based on non-gameplay trailers.

I'm just stating the truth. They have no voices so they are boring to watch, and they aren't even gameplay. The world of warcraft trailers amaze Me, but the games graphics don't so it's not really a reflection on the games capability graphics wise and so on. The trailers, in My opinion were boring and nothing special and that's My opinion. I'm sure I'm entitled to My own opinion.

So Final Fantasy XIII is on both platforms, but VS XIII is only available on PS3? This may actually work out well for us PS3 fans. If Versus gets rated as being the better game when it releases, some people from X-Box may be willing to switch consoles in order to enjoy it.

It almost seems like Square is testing/expanding it's fan base. If the Xbox fans buy into the FF series, then Square has gotten more people to buy their product. If they don't then they still give the Sony people something to brag about/spend money on with an exclusive title. Kind of a win/win situation unless the games suck.

Also, anyone willing to bet that if FF13 does really well on Xbox, then they'll probably see a FF7 remake shortly after? It's what Square did when they switched from Nintendo to Sony. They put a top notch game on to the PS1(FFVII) then re-released all the old ones that were on Nintendo for those that might have missed them first time around, or those that wanted to play them again. It almost seems like they're doing it again with M$.

360 Sucks balls. Freaking Versus is awesome as hell looking and has the minor input in graphix. When you look at FF13 its completely destroyed. Not only does FF13V look so good, but the story looks wicked sick. Also may I point out that you can't take a exclusive and go multi-platform and expect the story or the gameplay to be as good as the previous.

400GB blu-ray disc wont be playable on PS3 :D
and the transfer rate on the deepest layer will be horrible.

@USO
>_< the problem in X360 is the FMV. it eat a lot of space. in PS3 square can just do many cutscenes in pre-rendered FMV. but in X360, if they not want to make the game 5-6-7 disc, they need to make the cutscene realtime rendered to minimalize the disc space needed

EDIT:
btw the last 1 minute of the trailer is in in game engine. very visible from the jaggiest and (hard to notice) awkward chara motion

For those who have questions. There is a reason why the FFXIII series is called "crystal chronicles". This story goes back to the old formula and has crystals of immense power. In FFXIII, Lightning (the main female protagonist) is chosen by a crystal to destroy COCOON (the floating city that looks like a cocoon in this trailer and the dengekai trailer). Whereas, in VSXIII, the main character, name unknown, is the king of the last remaining kingdon to retain it's crystal. Other kingdoms squandered the power of their crystals and now, want his'. No much has been said about VSXIII, but I know that SHIVA is present in FFXIII and they (yes! it's the two ladies in the dengekai trailer who seem to dance on water) turn into the motorcycle Lightning's male counterpart (the guy on the bike) rides. Knowing that, I'm assuming that is the reason why he rides on ice.

I watched the 2 final fantasy trailers like 1.5 weeks ago.

And well...I'm saying this from the bottom of my heart. Final Fantasy XIII looks beautiful and in my opinion will be an awesome game but however will never live up to Final Fantasy Versus XIII. AND NO WAY IN HELL - am I saying that from my PS fanboy side but my JRPG fanboy side. Heck Versus XIII could be an exclusive to 360 and I'd still say it beats FFXIII if it was an exclusive to PS3.

Here's why:

Just look at Versus XIII. The story looks 10x more mysterious, the gameplay looks like it will be awesome considering the Advent Children and KH team are on this. It's directed by Tetsuya Nomura. The environment looks amazing. The emotion presented in the trailer looks amazing. When Noctis runs and comes across that other girl (who I'm not sure if is Stella or not) you can see such emotion in their faces. That girl looked almost as if she was to embrace Noctis but then something made her to start a fight with him that she never wanted. Also the characters in this are all just so interesting where you already want to get to know them. All of Noctis' friends? Graphics are amazing, "But it's all pre-ren" - nah ah ah, take a look at the end when Noctis meets Stella. That's real-time baby. Oh and the music???? GODLY. God this will be an amazing game. Can't wait on FFXIII either. But looking much more forward to Versus XIII.

Is anybody else curious as to who the Cid in this story will be?

And when you guys say "This was trash," or "I hated it," or even "I loved it," you're not providing any useful insight into your thoughts on the videos. You're forcing your thinking into two conclusions--love or hate--which are not representative of your actual thoughts on the video. You don't have to pick a polarized position just so you can say something.

I, for one, was impressed with the character art. The variations of characters was definitely representative of a Final Fantasy game. I especially liked Ifrit and Carbuncle. Hopefully the game itself will run in the same visual quality as these trailers.

If the 360 does come on 4-5 dvd's and doesn't match upto the PS3 version visually, then I'm sure its worth buying a PS3 for this game even if your already own a 360. Also how long after the PS3, will the 360 version come out? And when it comes and it looks inferior to the PS3 version, will the 360 version also look inferior to other PS3 titles by this time?

No 360 version in Japan, but as far as I know the PS3 release in the US is held back until they finish the 360 port, I'm guessing it was a condition of the new deal that jacked the original PS3 exclusivity.

and the FF13 X360 version will loss all the japanese voice. replaced with english voice...
if square keep the japanese voice on the x360, lol
how much disc it will take >_<

the ps3 versin will still have the japanese voice.. the big blu-ray disc space really give advantage to add more contents.

btw the ff13 in-game engine in the las 1 minute on the trailer, look great but look "static".

remember MGS4 tech demo in-game engine trailer? run in full 60fps, and look at all the dusts on ground and flying on air, the debris, the shadow, the lighting on snake's body, all dynamic and there so many of them.

So I understand how this gorgeous game drops jaws. It looks soooo good, finally a developer will be able to push the ps3 to its limits. Or atleast how much space bluray can take. Anyone know of any release dates or any info relating to that on FF13? I hear 2010. thats just horribly sad.

isnt it will be better if Square release their games in multiplatform?

Square get more profit, resulting more money can be used for developing new games with greater quality.

ALSO must I point out I see now FF13 does look somthing like X-2 with the flashing lights. The shiny stuff. The video atlest

Also FF13V look like a movie trailer. If it wasn't for a few parts that went a little long like the driving in the desert...or the expended men in the meeting room. It look's like a movie trailer...

Also I must add to the "No sounds" Maybe cause there not done with the english import...read there lips it looks like there talking jiberish

So I think this is a reason to get a new TV so I can use my component cables at least. All the games I have now, especially dead space and metal gear, the text is sooo small! and i can't read it! but when component is hooked up, that sh** is clear as day, just my tv sucks too bad to get any sound :-P

i own the original final fantasy game for NES.
even though it was fun back in the day i never liked RPGS,the last time i played a FF game was
FFVIII for ps1 that game still to this day captivates me....
that been said watching this video kind of reminds me what i felt for FF so long ago.
if this game is half of what this video shows it will be THE ff game of the decade...
this is just my opinion of course...

FFvsXIII FTW!
I have been with that one since the beginning. (FFXIII Looks amazing as well)
Just throwing this out there, but you know how at the beginning of the Versus trailer it sayd "this is a fantasy based on reality"?
Then later in the trailer, it shows that road flooded with water. Could this possibly be a game about the potential future of the earth? Global warming, ect. If so, this would go against SE's comment that the two stories are tied together, unless FFXIII has the same basis.
I am rambling, ranting about possible ideas... But this is what came to mind. :)

It sounds like bandwagoning at this point but both videos gave me goosebumps. Ive been waiting for something like this to hit on ps3 (while ive owned one) and it feels good my friends.

Versus didnt look interesting at all to me until now. I am truly digging the style of both and feel that it wont be too hard for me to shell out the 130 required to purchase both games new.

Well lets hope this quality filters into the final project.
