MGS4 Wins GoY At GameSpot

While we aren't the biggest fans of GameSpot - and we have our reasons - we do have to admit they still hold a lot of clout. Therefore, when a PlayStation 3 exclusive lands Game of the Year honors for the very first time, it's worth mentioning.

That's right, despite the very stiff competition, GameSpot has given their prestigious Game of the Year award to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and if we know our community, we imagine there won't be much disagreement amongst the readers. So far, we've seen a lot of the more visible sources - SpikeTV's Video Game Awards, TIME Magazine, New York Times, etc. - give the overall GoY award to Grand Theft Auto IV, which is clearly the primary competition for MGS4 in 2008. Oddly enough, Gears of War 2 doesn't seem to be factoring into the decision much, which is guaranteed to annoy the Xbox 360 fans, because they would've rather seen a PS3-only vs. a 360-only, instead of a PS3-only vs. a multiplatform title...see, the PS3 has both of 2008's best. But we're not about to harp on that; what matters is that Kojima's masterpiece is getting the appropriate recognition, and we still say this with little love lost for GameSpot. Who out there will disagree with their selection this year? Who will dare to challenge the greatness of MGS4? Who will provide a legitimate argument for other top-notch titles of the year?

And perhaps more importantly, what does PSXE think? As you can see by the previous links, we must've gotten something right, as the two games that vie for GoY so often are the two games we awarded the highest scores of the year...but does that one-tenth difference mean automatic victory for MGS4? Find out next week, when our Game of the Year Awards go live...

MGS4 is my favorite game from this year. Actually, I think it's the best game to come out in years.

kinda the reason musicians tend to prefer local shops to big brand stores (here's lookin at YOU, Guitar Center...). The local shop isn't as commercialized as the big brand store, and is less affected by advertisement deals and... well, i guess i'll just say it:

THEY'RE NOT AS SUSCEPTIBLE TO POLITICS.

not governmental politics, just the whole "lets please the majority of the people" kind of politics.

is LBP really that good? i saw videos and it looks great as far as visuality. but the gameplay looks simple and im not too into all these 'cute' looking things.

i can take some beating on this comment =)

I prefer my games intense and anti-cutesy too, but LBP was like a breath of fresh air, you forget all about the fact you are controlling a yarn doll and it's just plain fun.

You have friends?

If the answer is yes you better get this.
I've never had so much fun with friends before, this game is just so much fun.

Play, Create, Share!

Follow that and you'll be hooked.
Take FULL advantage of everything the game gives you and you'll be having a blast.

As far as production, effort, and presentation...I can see why GTAIV and MGS4 are duking it out. You really can't go wrong picking either one. IMHO, MGS4 was a little more fun to play...by a hair. The Game Industry needs an Academy of sorts like the Oscars that could pick the winner. Is that how the VGA's are run?

MGS4 deserves it.

GeoW2 isn't getting much attention because it's not GOTY. I play it a lot and it's exactly like GeoW1, just updated graphics and co-op. But then again, that's what I wanted.

Anyway, MGS4 FTW! :D

It was actually a viewers choice award, Gamespot are not the ones that chose it. The people that voted at Gamespot chose MGS4
