White Knight Chronicles Sells Over 130,000 Copies In Japan?

It's one of the most anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusives of the generation, even though the relatively low Famitsu review score knocked the hype level down a couple of levels. Now, the latest rumor is that White Knight Chronicles has sold over 130,000 copies in its first week.

According to Kotaku, WKC did manage to sell this decent number after it first hit store shelves in Japan on December 25. This isn't quite the splash Sony and Level 5 were hoping it'd make, but considering that Famitsu analysis, they should probably be happy that a sub-30-scoring game didn't drive away most potential consumers. In comparison, the biggest PS3 seller in Japan so far has been Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with 476,000 copies sold, followed by Devil May Cry 4 with 212,000. However, those games came out in the first half of 2008 and WKC just released last week, so...if the number is indeed correct, 130,000 isn't bad. At some point, we do expect to hear a North American and European release date for this promising RPG, but we now have our reservations about its quality. Famitsu isn't the only source to issue some "meh" feedback for the game, so we may have to turn our focus to other titles in 2009 that absolutely guarantee greatness. It's a dog-eat-dog world in next-gen software land, and if you don't deliver...

For our part, we're hoping the game doesn't entirely flop in the other two major regions, just because it may discourage Level 5 from making another RPG. We know they're capable, and a little slip on WKC doesn't mean they should throw in the towel as far as we're concerned.

I've read the reviews and honestly their "complaints" that are bringing such low scores just is not flying with me.

Such minor things and they wanna throw the score down the drain.

I'll still be getting this game.

I say give it a month it'll sell well over 200k and from what I've seen so far it looks like a solid game so its a day 1 purchase for me i'll support level 5 cuz I want them to work exclusively with the PS3

U should buy it because the game is good, not exclusive.

actually the figure might refer to the first day of sales and not a week. remember it only came out on the 25th - that's four days ago and cannnot reflect a week's sale figures.

Remember guys, Famitsu gave Haze a 34/40, so is their opinion really going to bother anyone? I'll probably be buying this game if the good reviewers (IGN, GameSpot, and of course PSXExtreme) score it high.

Like review scores really matter. Valkyria Chronicles scored 8.5 to 9.5 across the board and nobody bought it. It's all hype and brand recognition.

Ben, any updated sales numbers for Valkyria Chronicles? I'm hoping word-of-mouth gave it a boost over the holidays.

Oh and also, I beat VC over the weekend: easily one of the best endings to one of the best stories in ANY video game. A Perfect 10.

What does the Dynasty Warrior games score in Famitsu mag? There are poor games yet seem to sell a hell of a load of copies in Japan.

I'm sure PS3 owners in Japan are wanting to play a good RPG game and I bet most of them don't even read Famitsu magazines. So I think WKC will sell well in Japan.

but dynasty warriors has a built-in fanbase already. dynasty warriors will always sell. kind of like how tales series will always sell.

same thing all over again with different tweaks. but with better graphics and a new storyline.

Awesome, I bet the 1player(story mode) is really good.

Famitsu just didn't like the online and felt like giving it a low score.

Wonder if Microsoft's paying Famitsu..........

im not sure why some guys are putting so much trust into Famitsu. I'm not gonna mention the haze score because we already know about that fiasco.

Ben, you shouldn't start forming opinions until you actually play it or at least a demo of it.

Am I crazy or are those numbers looking pretty good? All I know is I'm freaking buying this game! I love RPGs and I beat Eternal Sonata already.

Have any other review scores popped up yet? I'd love to know if that Famitsu score is kind of the norm or if it's an outlier in a stream of positive press.
