Polyphony To Go In Another Direction After Gran Turismo 5?

When you say "Polyphony Digital," every avid gamer immediately thinks "Gran Turismo." And of course, that association will only strengthen when Gran Turismo 5 launches (hopefully, at the end of this year).

However, prepare yourselves for a very large and intriguing bit of news: during end-of-year interviews and according to PS3Center.net, GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the future of his company, and obviously, that included GT5. First up, he said that while 2009 was still the target time frame for the launch, "it may not make it," although not due to any "lack of effort." So that's kind of a downer but that's hardly the biggest news because Yamauchi also said that although Polyphony exclusively handles car games, they do want to try their hand at "a new, distinctly different game." What this could be, we haven't the foggiest idea, but now we're very excited to learn more about it. Yamauchi is one of those guys who can excel at just about any game project, even if he hasn't been exceedingly diverse. Like Hideo Kojima, this guy is a perfectionist, so anything he attempts should be worthy of our attention. Oh yeah, and what if his next game is also a PlayStation 3 exclusive...? Hmm...

Anyway, we will now be anxiously awaiting Yamauchi's decision, and if he really does decide to head in an entirely new direction after GT5, we'll be on pins and needles in anticipation of the announcement. That's for damn sure.

I loved all his games. I played all the Gran Turismos and that game right there might persuade me to get one.

Is the new game going to be car based? I couldn't imagine what they could do with other genres.

Didn't PD also do that Tourist Trophy game which was essentially Gran Turismo Bikes?

Either way, once Gran Turismo 5 drops, they wouldn't really need to make another GT for the rest of the generation. They can just give us floods of downloadable content and really ramp up that car count! Give me a 1980 Malibu Classic!

And I may as well be the first to mention that if GT5 doesn't drop in 2009, I will be irked. IRKED, I say!

WOW it could be like GRID aside with DIRT their putting up a fight to Colin Mcrae Dirt 2 which is gonna be awesome too.
This game is obviously gonna have high expectations but PD are gonna give it a all go.
it gonne be awesome but take ages to make.

His next game is most definitely a PS3 exclusive. Sony owns Polyphony Digital, they are a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment.

his dev team is bigger then you think. the PD building is a living quarters with showers, beds, kitchen etc. Im telling you that you cant rush perfection, especially at over 200,000 polys/car.

Maybe he will make a game to rival tom clancy's HAWX... Because I want that game to be great but I dunno how it's gonna turn out. You know how the japs love ace combat and all flying games. To have his team make it would be awesome.

i really hope they make their 09 date cause i want this game, i havent gotten gran tourismo 5 prologue yet like some of you have so that will definately help me thorugh if it dont make it out this year. him and kojima are masterminds, i wonder what he'll come up with.

Switching to another genre isn't always a good idea.
I know codemasters for their beautiful DIRT game but just recently a friend of mine handed me a war-like-cod-game done by them(Turning point:fall of liberty)......i must confirm that the game simply SUCKED every tiny bit outta of an ass.

Sometimes it's best you stay in your lane.

I know that this may be a pipe dream but it would be cool if GT5 had a free roam like the midnight club games or most of the NFS games. I actually had that suzuki rally car (in the picture above) when I used to play GT4. That was a FAST CAR!

Most GT players hate the idea. But i'ld love a street racing game that has the physics of GT slash GT5P. I'ld like it to be a street racing game but one that actually focusing on driving skill rather than just rubber banding around corners.
I doubt i'll ever see it before i lose interest but i'ld love to play/own it right now. At least some good highway racing to be done.

Actually it would be cool if all the races were still on tracks but we could either drive to them on the free roam or select them from the menu. I get more accomplished when racing on track then I do when I have to dodge cars on street races.

Rest assured Dingo, ive played GT since the first installment and have been at it for 12 years. Ive dominated GT and Golded almost all my licenses and Golded all my races. In GT4 i finished every mission in the mission hall, all except for Mission 34 being completely squeaky clean.

I much prefer on track racing and it suits me best...it would just be an interesting change. I didnt say i want GT to become a street racing game. That's blasphemy, GT should stay the exact way it is.

If Kaz is going to make a second racing series which i doubt that would be an interesting option ON the side.

They are going to try something new..cool!
I think it would be awesome if they did a mix of everything. A life storyline of a person..
Learn to walk..(sixaxis)
Schoolyard brawl..(button basher/Turn Based Strategy)
Learn to drive..(GT5)
Then go on to become a pilot..(Flight Sim)
Then get drafter into a war..(any good FPS)

Big finale shooting away..accidentally shoot a nuke..has to drive out to your plane..then fly..kiss the girl..
GAME OVER!!ha

Interesting news guys. You guys are dead on, he is a prefectionist so i could definitely see him pursuing some other sort of genre after GT5Full is done.

I have no clue what it could be, could be anything. I would think whatever it is, it would be a very deep kind of game at least story wise unless its another sort of simulator.

Of course it hauls major ass Josh haha, it has TWO engines. One in front and one in back. They use 2 turbocharged 4 cylinder engines. The only problem i have with it is that none of its Pikes Peak hill climb competition like the Toyota Pikes Peak Tacoma was never included so in rally it was never challenged. Except on Tarmac by the Toyota GT-One...godlyness in car design.

They didn't use to be(See Supra, MR-2 Turbo). Now though Toyota focuses on being the best in the business and sadly the majority of buyers just want economical, family or large people carrying vans which they dominate at largely, unfortunely for guys like us who like sport cars, we get bored.

I love Toyota, but i can't lie they are a bit boring. At least we have the Lexus IS-F and LF-A coming.

Iv never been a fan of Toyota. If I had to pick a Japanese car it would be a Nissan. Atleast they remember performance.

I love cars like the upcoming Camaro, ZR1, Shelby Mustang. What can I say, I got a sweet spot for American muscle.

Everybody has their own taste in cars. I love the cars you mentioned. Especially the Camaro V6 with 300hp and 0-60mph that should be breaking the 6s. I used to be a Nissan man but after a while i fell in love with Toyota due to their amazing business practices, even though they're pretty boring, and some of the amazing Le Mans cars they used to put out(even before the GT-One).

I've got a kind of Omni taste for cars, like prettty much a fancy for all makes and marques.

Anyone remember Polyphony's Omega Boost for ps1?

it was a decent mecha/robot game, kinda like Zone of the Enders.

I think Kazunori and Kojima are very alike, they love making things with quality, they want it to push the limits as much as possible.

Can't wait to see what PD does, should be beautiful.

I like to think of them as the Ying and Yang of video gaming. Kojima is perfection in stealth/combat gaming, and Yamauchi is perfection in racing. They are relentless in persuit of perfection.

@scarecrow, i had that game and actually i traded it to my buddy for something, it was really cool but didnt have much of a story. i LOVE that song in the beginning, do you know what it was called? visually for the time that game blew me away with its visuals. i might have to get that back off him sometime.

I didn't think the escudo was in GT4 because the hill climb was absent. @Shadow I was meaning a flight simulator not Ace Combat or hawx I just said that because that is the only stuff out there. I bet it would be a flight sim. But hearing how Over G for 360 is a good game for flight simfanatics most people don't like it because it's not arcady since the learning curve is so high for alot of gamers. I think hawx is not going to be that great.

Escudo wasn't on GT4 if can remember very well but it had two sweet GT cars with sponsors from Playstation

The Ford GT LM Spec I was one of them. All white with GT logos allover. There was also a Nissan LM race car in red with GT logos.

Then there was the real Courage C65 Evos that were in real life sponsored by Playstation heavily.

the Suzuki Escudo was on GT4. It could only be won through the "special condition races". The Polyphony Formula 1 race car was STUPIDLY FAST! I won it through one of the 24hr. endurance races (I left my PS2 on all night and let the computer do the race :).

I would love to see them make an updated version of Tourist Trophy. Don't know how many people played it but I thought it was a great game and gave the perfect example of the way a motorcycle should handle in a video game.
