Disney To Purchase EA This Year?

Big fish eat little fish. It's just the way of the world, even in business. Especially in business.

In the video game industry, we're always waiting to see who our big fish will swallow next. Last year, EA chased Take-Two around in circles for quite a while, but ended up with an empty stomach (it may have been a bitter-tasting fish, anyway, considering Take-Two's current stock price). But that's only our world; what happens when the biggest fish in the sea start chasing EA? Jill Goldsmith, Wall Street reporter for Variety, has suggested that Disney may try to buy EA in 2009, saying- "Disney is seen as a buyer, with market speculation centering on videogame company Electronic Arts as a possible target." Variety's Ben Fritz echoes this same sentiment over at The Cutscene, and adds that with the market in the condition it's in, we may see more in the way of huge media conglomerates snapping up video game publishers. As Fritz says:

"The videogame business has been having problems, with growth slowing of late, but it's still red hot compared to movies, TV, and music. And many videogame publishers, not just EA, have seen their stocks take major hits in the past six months, much more than the declines for big media shares. That means videogame publishers are more affordable for the conglomerates than they were a year ago. Which means we could just see a Disney-EA acquisition, or others like it, in 2009."

Seems like a logical mode of thinking, right? Everyone has been hurt by the economy, but as many analysts predicted, video games have flourished within a home entertainment (people stay home in a bad economy) cocoon of sorts. Perhaps "flourish" isn't the right word, but they've been staying fairly steady, so it's no surprise if Disney wants to expand their global domination with a play for EA. Gamers didn't like the idea of EA taking over Take-Two...we wonder how they'll respond to this...

Nope that's the definition of Pure evil. How anyone can hate EA is beyond belief yes they closed many great devs like Bullfrog but that doesn't matter they had to.
Aye Sure EA have made huge mistakes in the past but that games publisher would be vital through the Playstation years to me and everyone else

I don't think they've done nearly enough to vindicate themselves yet. Giving a homeless guy a dollar after stealing 100 dollars off another doesn't make it alright.

Hey, didn't Pure come from Disney? This could be a good thing. Maybe we'll see EA's BIG brand come back. Pure has already been compared to the SSX games. And I think EA could use some new blood anyway. There doesn't seem to be much innovation in their Madden franchise. Looks like this could only be a good thing.

The madden franchise is abysmal! The graphics are raucous and as you said; there is no innovation. Disney purchasing EA could be benificial to the consumers and lucrative to the the producers.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not. As long as they don't turn everything into a kids game it should be alright. Although watching Bugs Bunny Frag Hannah Montana in a game of Disney Quake could be worth a good laugh.

Disney is pretty serious about quality control, right? This might be a good thing. Although I find it hard to take any shots at EA after Dead Space.

Of course, Disney probably only wants in for the money, we don't know how much it would affect the product that EA puts out.

All I can think about is Disney's last game, Turok, and that was mediocre but enjoyable. However, my last EA game, Dead Space, and I freken loved that game. So I guess I have EA. I don't touch their sports games anyway.

I like this idea. I, like many others, have not been happy with EA for a while now. Make System Shock 3 dammit!! Though Dead Space was nice. Disney isn't known for rushing things out so this could mean some good things for the future. Time will tell. Now I'm just waiting for the Sony fish to chase down and swallow the Microsoft fish lol. One can dream I guess lol.

I know some of you hate Disney but I have to admit at how good they are at making games. I blew $60 on NFS Pro-street and it completely quit working after I got 25% through the game. But I only payed $20 on Pirates of the Caribbean:At World's End (it had already been out for a while before the NFS game) and it NEVER EVEN FROZE ONE TIME! The graphics were a mixed bag though (the pirates game still had better graphics than the NFS game since NFS could only do 720p and the pirates game was in full 1080p).

i think some of you guys are blowing things WAY out of proportion. i highly doubt that disney would have a substatial impact on what EA puts out, if anything disney would just add games to EA's already impressive roster. just because its disney does NOT mean they will go and make everything all kiddy.

Exactly. Talk about a way to lose your consumer base. I don't really mind them taking over in the least so long as they don't mess with the NHL series to much. It's finally become a fun series again. Though we might see more Anaheim covers if they do take over lol.
