White Knight Chronicles Causes 16% Boost In Japanese PS3 Sales

It certainly helps when you produce a game that will appeal to a particular audience's tastes, doesn't it?

White Knight Chronicles launched over the holidays in Japan, and despite some lukewarm critical reception, the PlayStation 3 owners really flocked to pick up Level 5's new RPG. The game sold 132,000 copies on its first day and over 200,000 copies in its first week, and now, the weekly Media Create numbers show that this caused a 16% boost in PS3 sales. Yesterday, Level 5 CEO Akihiro Hino confirmed that WKC would be coming to North America at some point, although its release may or may not have a significant effect on PS3 sales in this region. The good news is that, upon closer examination of that average Famitsu score for the game, it appears as if the online portion is lackluster, which dragged the overall number down. However, the single-player is great - or so we've heard - so that should come as a relief to RPG fans, who typically only want the single-player experience, anyway. And obviously, any drawbacks didn't stop Japanese gamers from picking up the game. Hell, a lot obviously bought a PS3 specifically for WKC!

Being an old-school RPG fan myself, I'm very much looking forward to Chronicles, and I'm willing to forgive any online snafus...primarily because I won't go online, anyway. Anybody else feel this way?

I feel the same way, I would almost rather there not be any online playing so I won't feel I am missing something when I don't play it.

hmm so if they didn't put in online, the score would have been higher?

That and if they liked the menus. Only things Famitsu were against.

I'd rather have a great single player game that I wouldn't mind replaying. Like FF7.

Greate news, Finally some success with a JRPG on the PS3. This could start a trend and due to the moderate graphics that L5 used other studios might make jrpg's without being scared about the graphics.
All i know about WKC online play is that its independent of the story mode which i think is not that bad since they can always update that part of the game and add features to make it better over time. Anybody knows how the online part of the game plays like?

That's a no-brainer, as far as I'm concerned theres MMORPGs and single player RPGs. I'll probably try it once just to get that much more out of the game but it's unlikely I would use the online mode with any regularity.

Well I was never planning on getting WKC for its online capabilities. It's just a bonus. Does the game have any English subtitle? or have an Asian release?

Even if the online is a little broken, I'll still use it, it looks fun. I really wish we could get a release date though.

I'd like to play online, but most likely will play by myself since my friends barely use the network.

for JRPGs, I don't care the online thing, I only play by myself anyway, as long as it has awesome graphics, deep story, fun and progressive gameplay, and emotional musics. thats all I want in a JRPGs, this never changed for me for 20 years. I only love old school classic JRPGs. so agree with you on that fully Ben!
