"No Plans" To Bring Star Ocean: The Last Hope To The PS3

We are well aware that many of our readers are upset with Square-Enix and the perceived shunning of the PlayStation brand this generation. Granted, there is a vocal minority that says, "forgive Square-Enix; they're just trying to expand their business!" Yes, well, if that were the case, why would they remove the PlayStation from their business model and only include the Xbox 360? Take Star Ocean: The Last Hope for instance.

This is a franchise that has never been on a Microsoft console, but we've seen multiple iterations on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. Therefore, it makes little sense to ignore the PlayStation 3 for the next installment, but that appears to be what Square-Enix is doing. Various rumors sifted about in 2008, claiming that S-E would bring The Last Hope to Sony's machine - heck, it was even "confirmed" at one point - but those rumors have once again been shot down. During a recent IGN interview, the development team said very specifically that "there are currently no plans for a PlayStation 3 version." It doesn't get any more concrete than that, although if you wanted to play the role of the undying optimist, you could focus on the word, "currently." In other words, if there's enough of a fan clamor to get The Last Hope on the PS3, and the PS3's user base increases (which of course it will), Square-Enix may eventually deliver the game. But at this point, it seems very unlikely, and that's unfortunate.

Does anybody understand this approach? The only viable reason we can come up with is that they started work on the game several years ago, when the PS3 had just arrived and was struggling. S-E wanted to expand westward, the 360 was doing well, and so they figured... Well, you know. But even so, it's tough for PlayStation loyalists to view this as anything but a slap in the face.

Same here, in fact I don't think I'll buy any other game that FFXIII and MAYBE Versus from them.

Final Fantasy is all they got, their other series are "ok" to "really bad."

Agreed.

My only problem with square enix is that they're just a bunch of hypocrites.

SE before this gen:"We plan on supporting all platforms equally" (No. of games on the PS3:0)

SE during this Gen:"FFXIII on 360 wasn't betrayal we are just trying to capture a wider audience" (FFXIII turns multiplatform. SO4, IU, and -TLR as of the moment- still exclusive to 360)

SE on platform favoritism:"We don't favor one platform" (see above and Hiroshi Takai)

Basically Hiroshi Takai already told me not to buy TLR on PS3 since it's main problem was the technical aspects and the 360 being much more easier to develop for and using the Unreal Engine which has it's own record with PS3 games using it being delayed, than what does that say about the PS3 version. Three words "Huge Technical Flop"

Yeah I really don't understand this either. Playstation has always been the console to go to for RPGs; so you already know that the Playstation fan base wants RPGs. So I just don't understand why RPG maker would not make games for a fan base that will buy them. It is just stupid.

What? You thought Square were going to be loyal to Sony? Anybody? Show of hands?

Did you honestly forget that they spurned Nintendo long ago? They only look after the bottom line. Nobody should be surprised at this.

Square = Jackals.

And, honestly, I haven't been able to really respect their output since they became Squareenix.

No, not loyal. But I just didn't expect them to pretty much betray.. again.

They're still putting some Nintendo DS titles out once in a while but there's no point in not giving the PS3 a Star Ocean game.
The series just doesn't fit the green and white (for me). I just think Star Ocean is black (and blue) all the way!! xD

Yeah, that last one had nothing to do with anything but yeah, meh.

Nintendo had to go because the 64 was supposed to be cd based but when they flip flopped on Square and FFVII couldn't fit on a cartridge they had to jump ship for Sony.

THIS move basically takes a stab at everyone who played the previous titles and enjoyed them. If they get a payoff good for them, but look at how JRPGs are doing on 360. Don't these people want sales anymore?

I'll put my money somewhere else. The 360 is not worth a single freaking penny out of my pocket. It's an outdated machine with its limited capabilities, aside from its online features which I admire. They either bring it to the PS3, or no love from my wallet. Period.

I'm sick of people complaining about SE they do care about the Playstation brand look at all the PSP, PS1, and PS2 games they've given us. Now they're moving over to Microsoft. Suck it up they did the same thing with Nintendo. The one thing is PS3 is in bad need of good RPGs to compete with 360's. Other than Valkyria Chronicles which bombed in sales it doesn't have anything.

Wow Spartan, before rambling off BS maybe you should read up on shit, one thing Famitsu didn't say WKC sucked, they said the online portion was, and that the single player was awsome, so you're wrong there. Also Fable I can easily live without, I've seen it, played it, hated it. Star Ocean, not even out yet, but if you use past experiences, then it'll probably be pretty good, and Blue Dragon, eh, just another game based off an anime/manga that uses 4 disks to play. Valkyria Chronicles was great and easily runs circles around Blue Dragon and more then likely Fable, depending on the person playing. But yes, the ps3 needs RPG's and they're being shafted by a company that is saying it's neutral and wants to make things for all, but totally drops one and works for one it has never worked for before.

Fable 2-GOTY from X play and Joystiq
Star Ocean- The rest of the games have been awesome (and if you're using the isn't out yet argument than shut up about KZ2 the first one sucked.)
Blue Dragon-true it was average but it's better than anything PS3 can come up with.

I have a little faith that Star Ocean IV will be on the PS3 as well mainly because the box art for the game doesn't say "Only on XBox" on it and the user install base has gotten much larger over the course of last year for the PS3 and it continues to catch up with the 360. If and when the PS3 outsells the 360 you will be seeing either all SE titles go multi-plat or more exclusives on the PS3. Just because they are not developing it now doesn't mean they might not in the future.

they so lied and are screwing over Sony. i can clearly remember and im sure most people do(my friends do too) that Square Enix after the release of Blue Dragon released a statement saying they will no longer do 360 Exclusives. but meanwhile this shows the contrary. SE says one thing but then MS flashes some big bucks and they're sold on it. i mean, The Last Remnant was supposed to be a simultaneous release for PS3, 360 but MS payed up big time to get it as a timed exclusive. only reason i still support SE is Dragon Quest.

Yeah I think M$ payed square enix to get so4, In my opinion I find it rather odd that ff13 was a ps3 exclusive but getting port to the 360 also now ok 360 get a ported and now playstation fans have to wait even longer for ff13 because it going to the 360. Why not square enix bring out ff13 now on the ps3 and let 360 owners wait until u finish theres. I heard they almost finish ps3 version. We all know rpgs on the 360 don't sell well majority 360 owners don't care about rpgs. I don't have a problem with games going multiplatforms its just that I don't like how some developers say the user base on the ps3 is small and they don't know whats its like to sell a game on the ps3 we all know our rpgs user base of the ps3 is more then the 360 rpgs base is small and there rpgs lags terrible. Valkyrie chronicles could have sold more but it wasn't advertises in commercial in the usa. Sony only advertises the first party titles and not third party thats up to the third party developers its not sony responsibility.

I hope this isn't true but maybe Square Enix is just........lazy. Sure sure they're spitting out many games and stuff and always manage to dazzle us with their FFXIII and FF Versus XIII info. But..........it seems like almost as if they don't want to try and spend too much time on the PS3. I MEAN......they love the PSP....and Xbox 360. Those are two systems where making games for is really simple. I always manage to love their PSP games. I'm not too sure about their 360 games since I haven't played one. I mean yea...they made FFXIII for it or are probably near finishing it but that E3 08 announcement kind of made me feel like...."YOU KNOW WHAT WE'RE EXHAUSTED...WE DEFINITELY NEED MORE FROM THIS HARD WORK...so now we're just going to stick to the xbox 360 to you know....make some easy money."

I mean yea it's a tough economy...and super hard to just go exclusive on one platform - but however if you do your best to master a platform like Hideo Kojima did and the guys at Guerilla probably did (we'll know soon enough) - then you'll get a good amount of success.

Hasn't Star Ocean been pretty much on Playstation???? Like every single one of them I mean???? It'd be insane not to bring this one to the Playstation brand. But oh well...what can you do.

Our Last Hope from Square Enix would be....FF Versus XIII really. Gotta love Tetsuya Nomura.

Nah, I think MS paid them a truckload to keep some exclusivity. Sad part is, I don't buy multi-platform games for my PS3 anymore. I built a monster PC rig that is well...to be frank, better than the PS3 and 360 combined. (GTX260 Core 216, Core 2 Quad Q9400, 2000 MHZ DDR3 RAM, etc...). No point in buying this stuff anymore, I can just download it when it comes out for PC.

So, that leaves me with PS3 exclusives, which means, the only thing SE is putting out in the next year or two, that I have a chance of buying, is FFXIII versus.

Great business Strategy Enix.

It's hard for me to hate SE despite some recent bad moves on their part. Who else can we turn to? The sheer volume of RPGs that they have released is unmatched by any other developer. All their releases aren't the best, but at least they're MAKING RPGs. It sux to high heaven that they're making 360 exclusives that's for sure, but let's face it, "No plans" = "can't confirm at this time."

Of course it makes little sense. JRPGs sell very poorly outside of Japan. Only the hardcore of the 'core even play JRPGs anymore.

They, however, still sell in Japan to some extent; so what does SqueEnix do, they put Star Ocean on the 360 where it will probably sell very poorly.

If, however, they put it on the PS3, it would sell a fair sight better in Japan.

It makes very liitle sense from a business perspective.
