Attention Sony: Let Me Introduce You To The Concept Of Advertising
Hey Sony, you may not be aware, but you've got a shot at a mammoth year in 2009. You've got quite the software lineup - your PlayStation 3 exclusives greatly outstrip the competition - and you've got plenty of momentum with the likes of Blu-Ray, PlayStation Home, and the ever-expanding Network.
Wait...we don't need to tell you. You keep telling us. But we're not the ones you need to convince; you need to convince the mainstream populace. As the years have progressed, you managed to chip away at the numerous arguments built against the PlayStation 3, and that includes classic complaints like lack of software, price, and Network that isn't as robust as Live. The games are here, you've dropped the price several times (could use another one, but whatever), the Network has Home, the video delivery service is great, and an awesome set of online content awaits all owners. But there's one last drawback that needs to be conquered: the marketing and advertising that never seems to measure up. Recently, you completely dropped the ball in pushing Resistance 2, and although you said there'd be a huge campaign for LBP...well, we haven't seen much. In comparison to what we've seen for Gears of War 2 and other Microsoft and Nintendo products, you guys continually drop the ball and to be brutally frank, we're quite surprised the PS3 and PSP has done as well as they have. Just imagine what you could do with a significantly heavy push throughout 2009!
This leads me the main point: with the likes of Killzone 2 looming large on the horizon, you absolutely cannot screw this up. Sure, that game will probably sell itself due entirely to review scores and Internet hype, but you could really use this game's release as a launching pad. And you could do it again and again with stuff like God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, and perhaps even Heavy Rain, Infamous, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, so please, don't lose out on this opportunity. Let's see the ads, and let's see them plastered all over the damn place; don't skimp on the bucks and don't hide the biggest games of the generation from the eyes of the public. Everyone is saying 2009 is "the year of the PS3," and you have it all set up for that...now all you need to do is push it.

If sony could just slip an awesome commercial in for this game at the superbowl, that would be awesome. lots of people watch it, including the same type of crowd that plays fps games like halo and cod4. if they see it, they might get interested, but it cant be anything crappy like other commercials, it has to actually show off what the game is capable of, actual footage of the game and not anything like the resistance 2 commercial

But man when the site opened this comment section I just had to join in.
It's great, people here are good and for the most part are not fanboys. Fans of Playstation, yes, but not fanboys. We acknowledge that the 360 and Wii have good games and all. But most importantly like don't go on rampages 'bout how the 360 sucks in every comment we make. Yes we do complain 'bout the 360's horrible reliability, which is something factual that people should be mad 'bout. But you don't see us posting 'bout it every day. AND at the same time we also lash out at Sony for backwards compatibility and other things, so we're pretty much a good bunch of people if you ask me.

Though they shouldn't just go the traditional way of advertising only.
They should be CREATIVE with their advertising. Make your consonle/games known in sports/stadiums, like have the PS logo 'round some baseball stadiums. Create events where people get sneek-peaks at games.
Start putting badass commercials when it matters most and please make them more 'bout the game than 'bout the console. This is a big point for me. ps2 and ps1 commercials were more 'bout the game than 'bout the console. Most ps3 commercials focus more on the fact that the game's on the ps3. If they just leave the game be and shine on its on that's all that's needed.

Sony needs to take a look at their advertising campaign for the PlayStation and adapt it for the PS3. The PlayStation was portrayed as the coolest, hippest damn thing since Run-D.M.C.'s Adidas, and everyone wanted it.

But still, over here in NZ city my friends don't even talk about PlayStation anymore :(
Apart from one friend who's switched to PS3 from Xbox 360. So I can also say Xbox is stronger in my city. Not for long.
:P
P.S. That (jokingly) censored insult hurt xD and he capitalization on 'NO' was ice cold man.
Sorry I offended you :P haha

It's a common moan that Sony don't push their product very well and in Europe that makes some sense seeing as our PS store and Home have less features than elsewhere yet we support the console more than any territory outside Japan. We still have no vid service either and it often seems Sony's desire to compete in the US leaves us on the backburner.
So Sony fail twice. When they preach it's often to the converted and then they fail to reward loyalty.
Look Sony(and SCEE) just do the right thing(it'll be good for you I promise)give all your users the same service then tell the world what you've got. Not us, we know about it all, but mr and mrs "might buy a Wii" and that means an actual TV campaign with ads people get and remember. All your consumers tell you this yet the ads are usually forgettable or non existant. With this years exclusives Sony should be on a real winner(and with the probable price cut it will be more important than ever)but if they don't get the promotion right they risk wasting a great chance to show the world what a great system they have. Here's hoping.

I counted them one day because people were having this same debate on another site. If I remember correctly, there were 5 PS3 ads, 2 or 3 Multi-platform ads (surprisingly not identified as 360 only), 1 or 2 360 ads, and 0 Wii ads that day. Those numbers weren't anomalous, either, though I certainly see Wii ads on occassion. AND THIS WAS AROUND THE LAUNCH OF GEARS 2.
Maybe you all just watch the wrong shows. ;) "Chuck", for instance, is always good for 2 or 3 Sony ads, with occassional other game ads as well.
My point is simply that I think people have a "sky is falling" attitude about the PS3 which causes them to exaggerate any weakness they perceive in Sony's marketing plan (et al.).

What I have seen is scary dolls, rubiks cubes, awkward "this is living" commercials, and a ps3 with guns, hands, dinosaurs, spiders, subwoofers and squidarms coming out of it.
Some of it is cool. But none of it actually shows what a Ps3 can offer.
I guess I have yet to see a ps3 ad wich shows of the great music/video/internet possibilities.

WE all know about the exclusives in 09, the potential price cut, the blu ray dominance, etc. all of that is trending towards the system taking off.
as of this moment, sony has the system sold to the likes of us (the consumers that post about the product on message boards, that stay up with the news...)
but the mass consumer has yet to adopt it. that is who advertisements go after. to buy ads now would be, in a sense, pointless.
once sony decides that the ps3 has reached the point in its life where the market can be saturated with it, the ads will come.
the only thing that sucks is they missed a great opportunity to markey LBP. could have done for the ps3 what crash did for the psx so long ago. BUT, im sure there will be a follow up...

I've been "shock'ed & awe'ed" by the total lack of an PS3 advertising department in 2008.
So now I'm now stepping in as your very first "1-man head-advertising and strategist"!!
Also, please be aware that my new PS3 12-step program shall commence "IMMEDIATELY"!!!!
1st ad:
A 60 second TV spot(all-channels)for the PS3 showing it as a full-service "GAMING" machine, including all of it's raw gaming power, uses & all the extra freebie perks that come with it!
2nd ad"
60 seconds ALL about the game, LBP, including snippets of everything in it!
3rd ad:
60 second spot all about PS3's "BLU-RAY PLAYER", & everything it can do, including up-converting of regular DVD collections too!
4th ad:
60 second spot all about KILLZONE2!
5th ad:
60 second ad all about RESISTANCE2!
6th ad:
Begin running ad #1 again!
7th ad:
Begin running ad #2 again!
8th ad:
Begin running ad #3 again!
9th ad:
Begin running ad #6 again!
10th ad:
Begin running ad #1 again!
11th ad:
Begin running ad #3 again!
12th ad:
Run a collage of all ads, # 1 thru #6!
These ads will play every 2 hours on ALL networks for a 4-month duration.
Also, near the end of each duration, the ads for each separate games, shall be updated to all new PS3 games that's either coming out, or is about to, in the upcoming 4-month cycle.
Also, after each new game has been selling for the period of 6 months, I will then bundle that game with a PS3, in order to jump-start PS3 console sales even more.
Also, since we're making most of our money on the sale of software, I am ordering the price reduction of the PS3 by $75, and that should boost software sale by at least 500 percent.
Please don't fret none about me naming my own salary Mr. Sony President.
None asked for, and no juicy "golden parachute" deal for me afterwards either.
Just drop me a few nice words of thanks, and an old refurbished 60gb b/c-chip PS3 with a newly installed 500GB hard drive, plus the complete library of PS3 games, including all future titles too, and that will do just fine thanks.
Respects,
Bikersaint

It's like the new Geicko commercial where the lizard's lawyer is sitting at the desk and talking about how the lizard should talk more about what a reliable insurance company Geicko is instead of saying random stuff. Sony should follow the same instruction as well and they should give out all the good facts about PS3 (like how M$ does with xbox 360 since nobody would waste their money on a 360 if M$ told all the bad things about it). Maybe Sony could advertise the multi-platform games as well (like guitar hero or COD4&5) instead of just advertising the exclusives.

And on a sidenote, I'm glad the site is booming, but I kinda miss the old days when it was just me and Aaron posting. Now we have like 50 comments per page.
That was the reason I moved from PSU to here, I'm glad you guys keep a tab on everything that's said here though. Hopefully it stays that way.
