Attention Sony: Let Me Introduce You To The Concept Of Advertising

Hey Sony, you may not be aware, but you've got a shot at a mammoth year in 2009. You've got quite the software lineup - your PlayStation 3 exclusives greatly outstrip the competition - and you've got plenty of momentum with the likes of Blu-Ray, PlayStation Home, and the ever-expanding Network.

Wait...we don't need to tell you. You keep telling us. But we're not the ones you need to convince; you need to convince the mainstream populace. As the years have progressed, you managed to chip away at the numerous arguments built against the PlayStation 3, and that includes classic complaints like lack of software, price, and Network that isn't as robust as Live. The games are here, you've dropped the price several times (could use another one, but whatever), the Network has Home, the video delivery service is great, and an awesome set of online content awaits all owners. But there's one last drawback that needs to be conquered: the marketing and advertising that never seems to measure up. Recently, you completely dropped the ball in pushing Resistance 2, and although you said there'd be a huge campaign for LBP...well, we haven't seen much. In comparison to what we've seen for Gears of War 2 and other Microsoft and Nintendo products, you guys continually drop the ball and to be brutally frank, we're quite surprised the PS3 and PSP has done as well as they have. Just imagine what you could do with a significantly heavy push throughout 2009!

This leads me the main point: with the likes of Killzone 2 looming large on the horizon, you absolutely cannot screw this up. Sure, that game will probably sell itself due entirely to review scores and Internet hype, but you could really use this game's release as a launching pad. And you could do it again and again with stuff like God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, and perhaps even Heavy Rain, Infamous, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, so please, don't lose out on this opportunity. Let's see the ads, and let's see them plastered all over the damn place; don't skimp on the bucks and don't hide the biggest games of the generation from the eyes of the public. Everyone is saying 2009 is "the year of the PS3," and you have it all set up for that...now all you need to do is push it.

So true, most of the people I know have no idea about what the PS3 has to offer. Some of the commercials have been ok, but it's like they can't even make those memorable for some reason.

And on a sidenote, I'm glad the site is booming, but I kinda miss the old days when it was just me and Aaron posting. Now we have like 50 comments per page.

That was the reason I moved from PSU to here, I'm glad you guys keep a tab on everything that's said here though. Hopefully it stays that way.

I dont think the psxe's popularity is bad. They do a great job of keeping all the idiots out, and still talk to us individually, like real people. That's more than I can say about other gameing sites.

I still feel the sense of community that you cant get anywhere else.

Ive been a devout PSX fan and particularly love Ben's writing and the smaller community. It was already growin when I took the plunge though. Aaronisbla always had great comments and the community is AWESOME compared to any other site.

Sony really needs to stop being that Quiet Prude and play ball. Not in a dirty way but Show Us Your Assets!!!

If sony could just slip an awesome commercial in for this game at the superbowl, that would be awesome. lots of people watch it, including the same type of crowd that plays fps games like halo and cod4. if they see it, they might get interested, but it cant be anything crappy like other commercials, it has to actually show off what the game is capable of, actual footage of the game and not anything like the resistance 2 commercial

Yeah me too, Ben's been doing Editorials and Analysis on gaming in general for a long time I'm sure.

But man when the site opened this comment section I just had to join in.

It's great, people here are good and for the most part are not fanboys. Fans of Playstation, yes, but not fanboys. We acknowledge that the 360 and Wii have good games and all. But most importantly like don't go on rampages 'bout how the 360 sucks in every comment we make. Yes we do complain 'bout the 360's horrible reliability, which is something factual that people should be mad 'bout. But you don't see us posting 'bout it every day. AND at the same time we also lash out at Sony for backwards compatibility and other things, so we're pretty much a good bunch of people if you ask me.

I completely agree with the article.
Though they shouldn't just go the traditional way of advertising only.

They should be CREATIVE with their advertising. Make your consonle/games known in sports/stadiums, like have the PS logo 'round some baseball stadiums. Create events where people get sneek-peaks at games.

Start putting badass commercials when it matters most and please make them more 'bout the game than 'bout the console. This is a big point for me. ps2 and ps1 commercials were more 'bout the game than 'bout the console. Most ps3 commercials focus more on the fact that the game's on the ps3. If they just leave the game be and shine on its on that's all that's needed.

I remember watching baseball every once in a while in the late ’90s and early ’00s, and I was often pleased to see the SCEA and PS family logos amongst the ads around the field. They probably still do this, actually. It's a nice technique, but it's not effective.

Sony needs to take a look at their advertising campaign for the PlayStation and adapt it for the PS3. The PlayStation was portrayed as the coolest, hippest damn thing since Run-D.M.C.'s Adidas, and everyone wanted it.

I waited and waied forr the supposed ad blitz we were meant to get(I'm in England)from Sony in the Xmas run in -but nothing came. All I saw were a few Wii Music ads and loads of MS Lips and Gears2 ads(and a lot of those MS ads that give the impression that games are 360 exclusives when they're really multi plats-Tomb Raider and Dead Space inparticular). What did Sony put out? A PSP ad that showed loads but said nothing and one ten second LBP ad. The R2 trailer only seemed to be on at the cinema(if you understood it you already had it on your list anyway)as well which seemed strange.
It's a common moan that Sony don't push their product very well and in Europe that makes some sense seeing as our PS store and Home have less features than elsewhere yet we support the console more than any territory outside Japan. We still have no vid service either and it often seems Sony's desire to compete in the US leaves us on the backburner.
So Sony fail twice. When they preach it's often to the converted and then they fail to reward loyalty.
Look Sony(and SCEE) just do the right thing(it'll be good for you I promise)give all your users the same service then tell the world what you've got. Not us, we know about it all, but mr and mrs "might buy a Wii" and that means an actual TV campaign with ads people get and remember. All your consumers tell you this yet the ads are usually forgettable or non existant. With this years exclusives Sony should be on a real winner(and with the probable price cut it will be more important than ever)but if they don't get the promotion right they risk wasting a great chance to show the world what a great system they have. Here's hoping.

I had exactly the opposite experience here in Canada. During the holiday season (and really all year) I've seen WAY more PlayStation ads than either 360 ads or Wii ads, maybe more than the two combined.

I counted them one day because people were having this same debate on another site. If I remember correctly, there were 5 PS3 ads, 2 or 3 Multi-platform ads (surprisingly not identified as 360 only), 1 or 2 360 ads, and 0 Wii ads that day. Those numbers weren't anomalous, either, though I certainly see Wii ads on occassion. AND THIS WAS AROUND THE LAUNCH OF GEARS 2.

Maybe you all just watch the wrong shows. ;) "Chuck", for instance, is always good for 2 or 3 Sony ads, with occassional other game ads as well.

My point is simply that I think people have a "sky is falling" attitude about the PS3 which causes them to exaggerate any weakness they perceive in Sony's marketing plan (et al.).

Its almost like sony is banking on the ps3's lifespan & unique killer games as an investment. Its like they know that most of the 2nd & 3rd world countries that are still on ps2 will update to ps3 when it gets cheaper and they will be able to sell more games overtime rather than once off. So it like this when m$ drops a new console expensive console with a handful off games & sony is going to drop ps3 price with a killer exclusive game library & blueray. If u did not have a ps3 it would be an opportune time to get it.

Maybe they know they messed up with the weird ads. It could be that they are trying to save on ad dollars to use it when a few more great games are out this year. Then drop ps3 price and announce the discontinuation of ps2 and hit the world with a large amount of great ads or maybe not.

I think that they just don't have the budget for the kind of ad-blitz that fans want.

People keep calling for both a price cut AND an ad-blitz (as in this article). With all their losses, Sony just can't afford it right now.

What I have seen is scary dolls, rubiks cubes, awkward "this is living" commercials, and a ps3 with guns, hands, dinosaurs, spiders, subwoofers and squidarms coming out of it.

Some of it is cool. But none of it actually shows what a Ps3 can offer.

I guess I have yet to see a ps3 ad wich shows of the great music/video/internet possibilities.

i tend to believe that after the universal appeal of the psx, and the ps2, sony is holding their cards on this one.

WE all know about the exclusives in 09, the potential price cut, the blu ray dominance, etc. all of that is trending towards the system taking off.

as of this moment, sony has the system sold to the likes of us (the consumers that post about the product on message boards, that stay up with the news...)

but the mass consumer has yet to adopt it. that is who advertisements go after. to buy ads now would be, in a sense, pointless.

once sony decides that the ps3 has reached the point in its life where the market can be saturated with it, the ads will come.

the only thing that sucks is they missed a great opportunity to markey LBP. could have done for the ps3 what crash did for the psx so long ago. BUT, im sure there will be a follow up...

Just saw the US PS3 ad where the guy tries to get his mate over to play Resistance 2 then when her indoors catches him he tries to pass his purchase off as a movie playing machine(or similar) and yet again I'm left wondering what Son think makes a good, stick in peoples minds ad. Even when they try to be light hearted about this stuff they still pick the oddest options available ti them whereas MS understand their market and just dole out the info(and cleverly leave out anything suggesting that any game might not be a 360 exclusive). Microsoft hammer their point home while Sony go round the houses with their tangential little vignette ad campaigns. I understand that they see themselves as having a slightly different product and image to MS but in actual fact they both need to realise they're fighting for the same peoples attention. MS gets it but I don't think Sony do, Nintendo get it as well and it's annoing when you know what a great console the PS3 is when they constantly sell it short.

I do my fair share of watching tv, i do see alot of ads for Resistance 2 and one where it's not just one particular game but all the new Ps3 exclusive games. I think they will start advertising more, but i see more advertising for Sony products in store and on the streets at least here in Canada. M$ has always over advertised and i find it completely annoying they do pushy advertising. also Sony has a lot of Word of mouth advertising then any other company. I know for sure i always see someone with a PSP on the bus and people will ask that person how they like it, to me thats stronger advertising then putting something on the tv. Now im from canada so i am unsure what types of adversting work in different parts of the world, i just know from experience and studying advertising in college that word of mouth is the strongest way to get peoples attention.

I've heard plenty say that Sony can't afford to undermarket. I don't watch much TV, but I wonder if Sony can afford to at all. I mean they've spent a pretty coin on promoting Bluray in the industry, and alot on the ps3 alone, and the company has been going through economic straits. In comparison, I wonder how well a company like Nintendo markets themselves on prime time TV. Microsoft, on the other hand can afford to overshoot their xbox budget by a couple billion, and hardly feel a thing.

That commercial for that party game, (see I don't even remember what its called) with the buzzers and whatnot. That commercial is stupid, they aren't gonna get the Wii lovers so just focus the money on the real games GAH!

Sony needs to make a commerical that is plain and simple and right to the point.Dont add flash or loud music, just right to the point.List all that the PS3 can do on the screen, while in the background list all the games behind it while circling the PS3.Simple and to the point. It's cheap, gets the message out and parents wont be turned off by the flash.Have it start out by saying "Please allow me to introduce you to the Playstation 3!"

I hate that Microsoft advertises MultiPlat games as if they were 360 exclusives. Has anyone seen those Rock band commercials? they make it seem as if the only way to play it is on 360. Same with Fallout 3, and GAT4

Sony occasionally does this as well, though not as often (and usually for lesser games).

I personally can't stand it regardless. If a game is multi-platform, it should say so in the ads.

Dear Sony President,
I've been "shock'ed & awe'ed" by the total lack of an PS3 advertising department in 2008.

So now I'm now stepping in as your very first "1-man head-advertising and strategist"!!

Also, please be aware that my new PS3 12-step program shall commence "IMMEDIATELY"!!!!

1st ad:
A 60 second TV spot(all-channels)for the PS3 showing it as a full-service "GAMING" machine, including all of it's raw gaming power, uses & all the extra freebie perks that come with it!

2nd ad"
60 seconds ALL about the game, LBP, including snippets of everything in it!

3rd ad:
60 second spot all about PS3's "BLU-RAY PLAYER", & everything it can do, including up-converting of regular DVD collections too!

4th ad:
60 second spot all about KILLZONE2!

5th ad:
60 second ad all about RESISTANCE2!

6th ad:
Begin running ad #1 again!

7th ad:
Begin running ad #2 again!

8th ad:
Begin running ad #3 again!

9th ad:
Begin running ad #6 again!

10th ad:
Begin running ad #1 again!

11th ad:
Begin running ad #3 again!

12th ad:
Run a collage of all ads, # 1 thru #6!

These ads will play every 2 hours on ALL networks for a 4-month duration.

Also, near the end of each duration, the ads for each separate games, shall be updated to all new PS3 games that's either coming out, or is about to, in the upcoming 4-month cycle.

Also, after each new game has been selling for the period of 6 months, I will then bundle that game with a PS3, in order to jump-start PS3 console sales even more.

Also, since we're making most of our money on the sale of software, I am ordering the price reduction of the PS3 by $75, and that should boost software sale by at least 500 percent.

Please don't fret none about me naming my own salary Mr. Sony President.
None asked for, and no juicy "golden parachute" deal for me afterwards either.
Just drop me a few nice words of thanks, and an old refurbished 60gb b/c-chip PS3 with a newly installed 500GB hard drive, plus the complete library of PS3 games, including all future titles too, and that will do just fine thanks.

Respects,
Bikersaint

What I hate is that their commercials give playstation fanboys a lot of information but they are almost impossible for everyone else to understand. Take the PS3 "Only On" TV spots for example. When they used to come on TV they made perfect sense to me but when one of my friends (who doesn't own any kind of playstaion) saw them he would throw his hands up and say, "Those are the dumbest commercials. They make no sense and they tell nothing about PS3".

It's like the new Geicko commercial where the lizard's lawyer is sitting at the desk and talking about how the lizard should talk more about what a reliable insurance company Geicko is instead of saying random stuff. Sony should follow the same instruction as well and they should give out all the good facts about PS3 (like how M$ does with xbox 360 since nobody would waste their money on a 360 if M$ told all the bad things about it). Maybe Sony could advertise the multi-platform games as well (like guitar hero or COD4&5) instead of just advertising the exclusives.

i am more in favor of separately advertising games, so if they r gonna start now make adds exclusively for kz2 , then later gow3, gt5 , mag and versus. u can make an ad bout infamous and heavy rain but most then likely those won't push much. i think it be a good idea to ad wkc those probably will atract same audience as lbp.

Ben, this is also a fine example of irony.

A Microsoft supporter accusing Sony of excessive spin. That's frickin' hilarious.

...and the 360's failure rate is within industry standards. Yeah, no spin there.

Oh, and Vista's a success.

Since Sony lost 1.1 billion dollars last year their 1st loss in 14 years (according to XPlay). They realy should start selling those hot Playstation Network T-Shirts featured in the ads on the PStore. $20 a T-Shirt could add up. I'd buy one they look cool.
