Pachter Expects PS3 Price Drop In April

Sony has conquered many of the major problems facing the PlayStation 3, but next to a decided lack of advertising, they still need to provide another price drop. Or at least, that's what consumers want, despite Sony's continued insistence that it won't happen. They've also worked to prove that the PS3 gives you more bang for your buck, which is a good argument, but...well, we still want that price drop.

And most analysts say we'll get it at some point. In fact, according to GameDaily, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has nailed down an estimated time for that cut. In addition to predicting growing sales rates (which should be confirmed with the updated NPD and EEDAR numbers), Pachter expects the PS3 to drop to $299 in April. However, he also says that will soon be followed up by another Xbox 360 price cut - down to $249 - some time around E3 in June.

"Once the PS3 is at a more affordable price point (we expect a cut to $299 in April), we think that sales of that device will once again begin to grow. We expect another cut in price for the Xbox 360, with the feature-laden Pro model likely to come down in price to $249 at or before this year's E3 show in June. We expect Nintendo to maintain Wii pricing at $249 until the company sees signs that demand is slowing, which means a price cut may not happen until late in the year, if at all."

So the price war continues. Provided Sony really does issue that price drop, it will probably start the ball rolling again, and the competition will heat up once more. We'd like to think Sony will issue the drop to go along with a major software release, but we're not sure which one... Stay tuned for more developments.

I agree. Once Sony sees a slow enough sales month, then they will consider it, but as it stands now, they wont. KillZone 2 will rake in so many sales that they wont need to worry about it. I expect them to try and turn profit for a few months at least before they cut the price.

yeah kz2 will sell if they market it correctly and in that case no reason to drop price though sales would probably go through roof if it where to be droped. In that case a gow3 price drop would fit perfectly , gow3 is as anticipated if not more anticipated then kz2, it alone could push sales so droping price with it would have same affect as with kz2 plus holiday season and the fact production cost will be much lower will make perfect sense plus gow3 will also have gt5 u2 & hopefuly mag as partners to help even more. so kz2 puts the bullet in the barrel locks it, gow3 is the igniter, the 3 other titles are the gunpowder and versus is the powder inside the bullet that will make it explode as to get the job done, now all sony needs to due is pull trigger and down goes 360 unless they r realy stupid and shoot them on the foot or even worst at them selfs lol.

I love how the media always reverts to 'unnamed sources' to sell their archaic paper-based product!

I think its probably closer to the truth that, like so many other companies, Sony is taking the opportunities presented by the economic downturn to right off some bad investments (*cough* UMD *cough* MiniDisc *cough*) so it can launch anew - phoenix-like, if you will, into the new generation.

I guess only time will tell if the price drop is a reality, or if we all get a pay-rise to make it only seem like we have more money :)

If the KZ2 bundle comes to my sunny shores I'll pick it up (need a spare for the wife's new addiction to GH:WT), or I can wait for the Uncharted 2 bundle to arrive ... maybe ;)

Keep on truckin', all you gamers clever enough to buy the best console going around!

And for the Sony spies keeping an eye on this page, and others ... nice work.

It be good idea to let consumers know that you have a price drop unlike last time.Well my guess is holiday season with a possible gow3 and gt5 bundel, don't know how good kz2 sales are going to be by then , my guess on that one is probably not competitive sales. All I am worry bout now is how sony is going to handel marketing kz2, I am hoping they don't screw that one up. Oh i forgot about u2 they should bundel that one as well. I check with other sites and they say this guys sucks at predicting so who knows nothing may happen and sony may hug kz2 so much that nobody sees it.

No, it's not a good idea to tell people you are going to have a price drop until right before you are going to do it. If you did tell them ahead of time, they'd just wait for the cheaper price and your sales go into the toilet until the price drop.

You know who else predicted April? Me. I did so at the one where Greenberg predicted the price drop.

"I'm not going to try and figure how much they will drop the price by, I'm not that good. But I call it for a price drop in April. I think it may involve yet another example of Sony adding value though rather than dropping the price that much."

And its predictions like that are why this guy gets paid? I want some of that.

I made that prediction on the 6th.

I really can't see a price drop for the system anytime soon, sales are strong for console and games for the system, maybe later in the yr or early 2010. I still think the price is perfect especially what the system can do, any lower than the standards will be lowered so that they can make people happy.I prefer the higher price of good quality than lower the price for crappy quality, the system is not cheap to make so something will have to be removed, some feature on that console if they lower the price, just like they removed the chip after the launched consoles for B/C.

The PS3 will not be $299 in April, more like $349.99. There will probably be a price drop when Sony uses the 45nm RSX chip. The PS2 is still $129.99, it should be $49.99 by now.

PS3 just stamps the whole competition to me it's the only proper 7th console the Xbox 360 wasn't that much of a great console. So why pressure Sony on a price cut? It's got everything I need and the price is spot on

So a second price drop is completely out of the question I know that more Gamers would flock to Playstation 3 but I'd just believe in Sony that a price drop isn't needed yet

You know what I think? I think everyone is thinking too much about when Sony is thinking about dropping the price. And I think its ok to think that thinking about when the price will drop is like thinking outside of the box. Thinking about things like that get me thinking that Sony knows we are thinking of a price drop, and they in turn are thinking about satisfying our needs.

Patcher said that the PS3 copied 360 so I before didn't believe anything he says in the first place, so yeah he is biased and a fraud, it is random guessing. If you were getting paid for fortune telling, would you do the same things he does?

If Sony wants to push sales of the PS3 then now with many people expecting tax refunds is the time for a price drop !

I'd say somewhere between $299-$349 would be appropriate. Sony should know by now a price drop is the only option they have left to attract new PS3 buyers.

Not gonna happen. Sony is in too much financial trouble to get into more by dropping the price, considering that the sales of games on the PS3 is no where near strong enough to make up for the financial harm that dropping ht eprice will bring.

Hell you know what I think? I think Sony should drop the price of the PS3 to the Price of a Wii atleast for 3 weeks-1 month. All consumers will jump on the Sony rush and buy them out. That way Sony gets more console out and the return from software sales will increase.

Yes, they will lose loads of cash, but the install base and more users on Home buying clothing and stuff should off-set the loss a little bit.
