Final Fantasy XIII To Be Available Worldwide Later This Year?

We game journalists should really learn how to speak Japanese...but it's really hard. We'll just have to rely on some Google translation for this one, as RPGFan has apparently done just that with a recent Famitsu article.

We already brought you the pertinent details from that Final Fantasy XIII Famitsu feature, but we may have missed something vital. It seems that Square-Enix expects their epic RPG to launch "on both sides of the Pacific sometime later this year," which means PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners may be able to place FFXIII on their holiday wish lists in 2009. But there's an interesting side story to this that's gonna irritate some PS3 owners out there- Square-Enix has said they won't even start work on the 360 version until the PS3 version is quite literally "in the box" and ready to go. Even so, they're waiting to complete the 360 version so both can ship simultaneously to North America (Japan should see the PS3 version earlier; there will be no 360 version), and this is the news that really annoys people. If this translation is accurate and FFXIII really will be available worldwide before the year is out, it means the PS3 version is rapidly nearing completion. And how would you feel if the game was just sitting there, all done and ready to play...but unavailable until the team finished making it for the 360?

We're not really understanding this philosophy, but we have to admit, we haven't understood a lot of what Square-Enix has done so far this generation. Would it be such a terrible thing to hand FFXIII to PS3 owners first, especially if the game is done? Well, whatever. Guess we just have to roll with the punches on this one, and either way, we so desperately want this game...

SE has pissed me off this generation .. im still not sure about this game yet im surprise there able to get not only the PS3 version done but the XBOX 360 version done that fast.. i just hope the game doesn't suffer in quality because its on the XBOX ...

It all comes down to cash with this. MS will pay, and PS3 waits to play. I am pretty sure that if FF came out on PS3 before 360 that it solud be a console seller. At least it is not like Rockband 2. MS paid for a almost two month exclusive... That was just wrong.

Last Remnant is fun (I really like it, but I'm an RPG nut) but I'm 99.99% sure the reason it was out on the 360 first has more to do with technical problems with getting the Unreal Engine to run on the PS3. It does not run smooth at all on the 360. Installing it made it palatable, but still wonky. Hopefully PS3 owners will get a much better running game.

Has there been a third party UE game on PS3 yet?

It is because it is part of the deal with microsoft and they will get biggest first day/week release sales this way. It is easy to read between the lines on Square Enix this generation - it is all serious business for these people.

As for the game and port to the 360 - looking at other SE games on the 360 so far, it don't seem like they are all running so smooth. Then again, on the Final Fantasy titles are you running their top development teams, and they are prefectionist and shouldn't be just be happy with "great, it runs on the 360 fine lets call for golden-status".

Even though many are mad and pissed off at SE for doing these tricks, I am more disappointed and sad than pissed off.
I bought PS3 for FFXIII and other great RPG from Japan.
I hope that Sony or Level 5 - announce a concrete release date or frame, like Summer or Fall 2009.

But looking at earlier RPG releases, it takes extra time for us Europeans. This Final Fantasy XIII will be an exception.

Technically, that IS what they mean, Shak. However, since the "enlish version" that you speak of would be no different from the Japanese version except in language, then a logical person would assume that the PS3 english version would be finished WAY before the 360 english version, which needs to be recoded basically from the ground up. But, rather than release the finished PS3 version, Square is just letting it sit on shelves, unavailable to the public, until the pointless 360 version is complete. And who knows how long THAT is going to take...?

That, in a nutshell, is why Final Fantasy fans are annoyed.

Sorry, but he's right. Compare White Knight (in sales number and whatever review scores are out there) with Square's current-gen fare and you can see which company is making better games right now.

This IS just sad. M$ is a bitch for paying SE to do this to us. SE should be giving us timed exclusivity for once, like they've been doing for the 360. And the 360 version wont suck, and that's what's sad. They're building the game on both systems to maximize it to each of their potentials, NO ports! But whoever said that the 360 version will flop, you are undoubtedly correct. M$ fans do not appreciate rpg's that's why they bought the 360. This is just unreasonable, and just plain unacceptable. SE is just a few pushes away from losing a LOT of business. I hope they realise that and start to fix their ways.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that Microsoft not only paid SE to bring FFXIII to the 360, but also probably threw in a tip to make it a simultaneous release. If that's the case, I don't blame them because it's better than them going out of business and never finishing FFXIII at all. Frankly, the news that it'll be out this year is much more exciting than the news that the 360 version will hold up the release is disappointing.

SE would never have gotten to where it is now without Sony and the PS1 and PS2. Now it looks as if the idiots are abandoning the very people that got them to the top of the mountain.

Sort of like music artist and how most groups make it big together, then the band breaks up and the individual members all flop.

Whats so stupid on SE's part is that they continue to make exclusive games for the system that isn't appreciating their work. I think anyone with intellegence can say that most 360 owners can give a rat's ass about RPG's.

SE keeps shooting itsself in the foot, and doesn't have the brains to take their fingers off the trigger.

I won't be buying their stupid ass game. I have lost all faith in them as a company.

That's the point Josh, lots and lots of Sony fans have been into RPGs for over a decade and you are an XBOX man and never have. I'm glad your interested it's a great genre, but the fact you haven't gotten into it is proof enough the biggest sales just logically wouldn't be on 360 hardware.

Yes this was back on Nov 28th but he specifically stated that they weren't going to delay the PS3 version for the Xbox360. Guess until I hear a direct quote from someone at SE I will cling to that last element of hope.

It all make sense. M$ probably paid them enough money to provide FFXIII in the 360 for NA. M$ knows the 360 is poor in Japan so they (M$) didnt bother paying SE more money to release FFXIII in Japan.

I hope Square dies...after this Final Fantasy. Especially if it isn't turn-based esque. Real time sucks. It takes less strategy. I don't understand what the hell happened did a Ps3 owner screw their Mom? This is just another one of Squares blatant slaps in the faces of the loyalists.

And if you've never played a Final Fantasy then.. I think you should consider trying out the earlier titles instead of giving this your 1st go. They were all good/great games (well FFXI is optional).

Hypothetical situation: a) Bungie's new project is announced multiplat b) the 360 version was finished now but c) you can't get it for half a year because they're making sure the PS3 version is done and runs well.

Shut it. You're just trying to start problems again. Sony may not have started with FF but MS has basically NEVER had it, and if you knew anything at all about RPGs or RPG fans, you'd know that the PS1 days of Squaresoft are of equal or superior quality to the Nintendo days.

Furthermore, it's not a question of IF the 360 gets it. I don't care if it does and nobody else does, either. However, it's asinine to save the PS3 version if it's done already just so S-E can do a simultaneous launch.

If your pissed because its finished and not in your hands then yes I can understand. But if your just mad because its not exclusive then I can kind of see that.

Most people when they think FF they think Sony. I never got into it because im a big shooter, car, and GTA person. I loved Gran Turismo and the GTAs more then anything.

Think of it in my view. I love gta and shooting games..then the PS3 comes out and GTA4 goes to both. Then all these great shooter titles like Halo and Gears are only on Xbox. I drive American cars and support American products. I dont "hate" the PS3..Hell when they first came out its all I wanted. But im happy with MS now. They have the games I like and the online service I prefer. They both have ups and downs. I just picked the one thats right for me.

The sad part is that the suits over at S-E probably don't give two shits about "delaying" (c'mon Squenix, call it like it is for once!) the PS3 vers. in favor of a simultaneous US release, depsite cries from their fanbase. They know the game is highly anticipated - what FF game hasn't been? - and in the end they will be laughing their way to the bank anyway (if they haven't already with some sweet, sweet MS money...)

It's a total win win situation for them, and they could care less what us lay people think.

i just watched the 5min trailer for FFv13.
and seriously, i dont know how bothered i am about FF13 anymore.
Versus looks so much cooler.
+ most of the people on the DEV team are all people from FFs7,8,9,10
they have brought together people from some of the best FF games ever. so its guaranteed to be a great title.

I think it means what it says because this is actually old news, awhile back they had a statement about not starting the port until the PS3 blu rays were all done. I think it's pretty clear, this is a gigantic flaming middle finger to everyone here but Josh.

lol, no. Because Sony told SE not to release it on the 360 in Japan. They agreed to have XIII be released in US and PAL for PS3 and 360. But not in Japan. They also demanded to keep Versus XIII as exclusive. This was a meeting back in 2008 of April, so Sony knew about this early and if you ask why SE brought this up to Sony, its because Sony owns more than 20% of their stockhold and they have their rights as stockholders.

I hope FFXIII will have a good soundtrack though. Like FFX! IMO thats what made FFX so memorable. Will Nobuo Uematsu make the music for FFXIII? cause i know, FFXII wasn't handled by him. FFXII's theme was the main theme of FF. I hope FFXIII has its own theme song:)

What's bullsh** is:
Squarepenix said they will never realease a game now if it's too hard to release on a system. They specifically said if it slows down the development time on another system, they will not bother developing it on the lagging system. Now they are developing it for the PS3 right now, but will only port it once it's done. In My eyes, that fu**ing bullsh** and they are just fu**ing everyone over now.
