PS3 Firmware Update 2.60 Announced

Come to think of it, it has been a while since the last PlayStation 3 firmware update. Remember back in 2007, when the updates came on a monthly basis for a while? Well, anyway, another one is coming soon.

As announced over at the official PlayStation blog (check out the unveiling video), firmware update v2.60 isn't far off, and it's designed to "enhance the system's media capabilities." First up is a new Photo Gallery application, which is a definite upgrade: we'll get a new suite of tools for sorting through our photo collections; the pictures we have can be separated out into special groups according to criteria. So if you want to organize your collection by date or even something more specific like "number, ages or facial expressions," you can do so. Once you're done doing that, you can set up a cool slideshow - set to music! - and create photo playlists. This application will have to be installed separately from the XMB after the firmware update has been downloaded, though, so don't forget that little detail. In addition, v2.60 features:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

When Sony said they intended to make the PS3 a fully functional and capable multimedia machine, they weren't exaggerating. And just think, there are many more years of updates to come...

The smiling and kids categories are from Sony's camera department.

The Sony camera's are cool, they will detect a smile and take the picture as soon as they smile, therefore not to miss anything.

So all they did was refined it to scan the pictures and then categorize them, not that weird.

makes me wonder how much resources they wasted on this when they could be working on stuff the most ppl want and would use in actual game playing

Enhanced photo management tools are nice. I actually use my PS3 to store photos from time to time, but to be honest I'd prefer a cross-game voicechat.

Try to stand right in the middle of the section were the three planes are. And then try to face a direction were nobody is standing so you won't see anybodies name pop up. If if is not overcrowded you should to be able to enter the race.

if you change the email tied to your account or your password, your trophies dont sync right. sony outlined a pretty elaborate fix, but they reiterated that nothing is deleted, your playstation simply doesnt look up the right trophy info from the PSN servers and craps out.

I would like an organiser icon added to the XMB similar to the one found in phones , with the calender and all . We would be able to set reminders and while playing a game , the indicator for a set reminder would appear , just like it does when a trophy is earned .

The cost for adding something like that shouldn't be much and will make the PS3 more user freindly .

I think it's a great update, even though I rarely ever look at photos on my PS3, but one thing I'd like to see is for them to iron out the in game invites a little bit. Some games do put them in, and they usualy work pretty well, but it would be nice to see them be more universal...

When it says DivX 3.11, does this mean it plays DivX files encoded in this version? Because the latest DivX codecs are version DivX 6.

here's a tip for you guys, did you know that you can hook your ipod to your PS3 to play music and more? hope this helps you utilize your PS3 and make the best of it.
the reason why you cant add your own avatar is because sony wants to keep it clean and unbiased.
mostly everything i own is Sony product so it makes it real easy to hook up anything to my PS3.

i would love it if my massive amount of bandwidth had any bearing on my DL speeds from the PSN store. file sizes that take half an hour on my computer take overnight on my PS3, and they're both on a wire.

Don't know if this happens to you, or only me, but I noticed when I DL stuff from my ps3, essentially just the store and/or patches and updates for games. It always seems to go faster for the larger items then the smaller. Like I'll watch it via the status option of it, and the larger files are always speeding along while the smaller trickle through, it confounds me so.
