Square-Enix Turns Crystal Defenders Into Downloadable Title?
First of all, there's no way on earth that this can be the "new vision" Square-Enix is hyping at their little countdown page. That would be uber-lame. It would so lame, we'd have to crown Square-Enix as the official Lord of Lameness. But it can't be related to this, as this isn't really related to Final Fantasy XIII, so...
According to European gaming site PS3Life.nl, Square-Enix has announced a new game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Well, to be more specific, a new title for the PSN and Live Marketplace: it's Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders, which is already available on the iPod Touch and iPhone. This news of a port to the online stores for next-gen home consoles comes courtesy of Famitsu, and if you want to check out a video of the game, feel free. Obviously, as the site says, we'll be looking for a graphical upgrade of some kind, but even then, is this really the type of game that will turn heads? Sure, it'll only be a downloadable title, but if you hadn't noticed, there have been quite a few great ones over the past couple of years. Square-Enix tends to excel in the big-budget, blockbuster realm, but lately, some lighter productions (on the Nintendo DS, for example), have done exceedingly well. So perhaps this is a nod to S-E becoming a little more next-gen-savvy; perhaps they know how to make money in more ways than one.
Yes, well, they do. They've known how for a while; we just never really noticed, as we were so heavily focused on the stuff they delivered to the PlayStation brand. But considering that "stuff" is basically non-existent (in comparison) this generation, we're noticing now. And who's going to get Crystal Defenders when it pops up? Show of hands.
