Everyone Needs To Stop Complaining About Game Sequels

Just to clarify from the start, I am all for originality and innovation. We wouldn't be where we are now in this industry without both artistic and technological advancement, and I'm as big a supporter as anyone of IPs like last year's LittleBigPlanet and Mirror's Edge. However, the constant complaining about sequels running rampant in the industry needs to stop.

Yes, there are a lot of sequels and new installments in long-running franchises. Yes, many of the biggest games of last year had a number after them: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Gears of War 2, Devil May Cry 4, Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, and new entries in the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty franchises. But has anyone noticed that these sequels tend to kick serious ass? We don't operate within the same boundaries as films; they've already advanced to a point where new technology and artistry isn't really playing a significant role any more, and games continue to take great strides every few years. Therefore, when a sequel or new installment in a franchise arrives, there's a damn good chance it'll easily eclipse previous titles in the series simply by default. While some may prefer the original Gran Turismo or Grand Theft Auto to Gran Turismo 5 (whenever it shows up) or Grand Theft Auto IV, nobody on earth can make an argument that the sequels are of "lesser quality" than the original games.

I would be up there complaining with everyone else if the sequels were simply getting stagnant, and publishers were releasing new games in a popular series that feature nothing in the way of freshness or advancement. But I almost never see that. Sure, we can debate all day long on MGS vs. MGS4...but really, the mammoth strides taken in depth, story-telling, fluidity, and presentation (not to mention the obvious technical flourishes in terms of sound and visuals) is undeniable. And if we're being brutally honest with ourselves, nostalgia often plays a larger role than we anticipate when embarking on "original vs. sequel" debates. Seriously, let's just admit that; it must be volunteered to be accurate. True, we still need more IPs and unique ideas, but that doesn't necessarily mean we need less sequels. Get to the end of this year, and the Game of the Year nominees will likely include stuff like Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Street Fighter IV, etc. IPs like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake should be fantastic, too, but new entries in established series should rule once again.

And so what if they do? We all care about playing the best of the best, right? So who really cares if those games have a number after them? Usually, they're almost entirely new experiences, anyway! Think about it.

A game we will never see on PS3 I presume but if you have a 360 as well it is made by the company that made the Max Payne games I think but it is being published by Microsoft game studios

Very true.

Its the gameplay that matters. I will always love the next GTA or call of duty because they take the original formula and improve or change it.

I really wish they would remake callofduty 2 big red one. That storyline was amazing. You really did bond with the other members of your squad.

Hey Joshua,
Don't have a 360 or PS3 yet(only the original Xbox & PS2 so far), but planning on buying both, 360 & PS3 later this year.

So 3 questions for ya....
is that vid clip from one of the Halo series? And if so, on which, original X or the 360 console?

Also, I want to get the whole H- series, but I always buy used, so I'm usually more than a mite behind the times. Since I just picked up Halo:Combat Evolved for $5,(haven't played it yet though) is my copy the very first one in the series?
Thanks

Yeah the clips are videos from Halowars and Halo 3. Both are from the 360. Tho the graphics and gameplay on the first 2 are still great.

I can tell you Halo 3 is amazing and so is the online community. Yes Halo CE is the first one and has a great campaign. Some say the best of the series. If you have any other questions just ask.

I still love the original and play mine all the time. What games you got for it?

Yeah, Master Chief would definitely kick Snake's ass. We're talking about a guy who wears 700+ lb armor versus a guy who hides inside a cardboard box. The fact that his personality isn't really displayed in the games increases the immersion factor for me, because it's easier to picture myself in his position than in Snake's.

I love secuels and I love new IPs such as Dead Space, LBP, Uncharted, etc.

But what I cant's stand is a secuel that is inferior to its predecessor. To name a few, CODW@W, GHWT.

I really don't expext Uncharted 2 to be less than amazing. But I'm also very excited about Heavy Rain, and I'm looking for Alan Wake if it make it this year anyways.

So bring new IPs, bring some secuels, but allways bring a great gaming experience

Its insane how many people knock COD:W@W just because its set in WWII. Its the same dame game with pluses. Gore!!! More perks, and theirs actually a reason to go prestige other than take away you favorite weapons to earn them again and yes you still the little metal. So please try it before you knock it.

i have no beef woth sequels as long as they're done to a good standard, after a while some games series can just drag on, for modern refferences i mention Sonic (and any other classic platformer), Soul Calibur. S.C got boring by teh 3rd game which introduced nothing new and sonic has just had so many silly characters introduced its unbarable. teh Final Fantasy series has the most effective answer to tired sequels as they can get away with having a different plot and characters each game, which is phenominal.

I think the whole Halo thing died and should have been buried at part 2 which I thought was decent with some things added that I enjoyed. Halo Wars is an RTS that is going to go back and try to do what Halo was supposed to be from part 1 so it may work now that it has a fan base willing to buy anything that has to do with the name and now that RTS's are not being treated as much like the plague as they once were when they are on a console.

They will continue to crank out HALO games because they know if they came out with a clothing line and shoes fanboys would go by it.

Think about what you sound like to someone who doesn't share your point of view. What would you think if someone came on here and said, "Harry Potter is boss!"
This analogy will of course not work if your a Harry Potter fan. In that case we will go to an extreme and replace Harry with Winnie the Pooh

I've never had a problem with sequels, in fact I gotta giggle at the idiots who say stuff like Final Fantasy XIII? When is it going to be the FINAL Final Fantasy? Ya know what? Never if I have anything to say about it.

Sequels only tend to blow chocolate donkey balls when they aren't of the numbered kind but just have a subtitle: Sonic unleashed, etc.

Of course, the only sequel this world really needs is CHAKAN: The Forever Man 2!!!

shame that Alan Wake is a 360 only game, but still from what ive seen I'll take Uncharted 2 any day, seeing as they have been working on Alan wake since before the Spectrum 48k (lol).. you would expect great things, but think about history of over due games.. very rarely do they deliver.

My main beef with sequels is that they hardly ever keep the spirit of the original game in them. Requirements for a good sequel include:

Lack of change in gameplay elements. Yes we want some things different, but what we really want is more of the same. If you require us to learn a whole new controller layout, you are going to suck.

Better objects. Not to say a new engine is required each time, but better graphics, sound, AI, textures is a huge feature in sequels.

Good ties to the first game. It doesn't matter if you have extended the story thru games on other platforms, books, movies, comics, what have you. The sequel should move somewhat seamlessly from the first game to the next, so that we don't lose the story.

Examples of good sequels:
GRAW 2
R6V 2
Gears 2
FFTA 2

Examples of bad sequels:
Halo 2/3. Changed way too much from Halo: CE to even be considered a sequel. Not bad games in their own right, just shitty sequels.

Condemned 2. I understand that Sports games need to change things up to make people think they have to buy the new one, but don't tell me that every single aspect has changed from the previous version.

Resistance 2. This would be in the above list if they simply LEFT CAMPAIGN COOP ALONE!!! motherfarkers. gah.

It opened up the story yes which i played and appreciated but online was GARBAGE to me(I do not mean as in design or technical hitches, because the matchmaking system was awsome, but duel wielding was horrible. Nobody melee any more, cheap kills with smg and plasma pistol combination, and really bad campers with shotguns hiding EVERYWHERE!!!)Overall though it was a great game!!

@Joe:
Complete agreement with you on the Resistance 2 comment. I loved the campaign co-op of part one and when I bought part 2 and loaded it up and sat down with my fiancé to play it we were both pissed beyond belief that we had some weird ass not campaign co-op bull to deal with.

And also, Condemned 2 is a sports game?

no, condemned 2 isn't a sports game...
I'm jsut saying that the only other kinds of games that have changed controls so dramatically between games is sports games...

Ah I thought you had gone all psychopath and decided killing was a sport now. Anyway I never played the first Condemned and I thought the second one was so horrible that I never attempted to even track down part one.

the first one was awesome. It made me practically piss my pants and hide in another room, and I was only watching my wife play it.

Then again, I'm about the biggest wimp when it comes to scary/games movies...

Which is why i don't understand why fear is so overrated. I had no problems with that one.

I would like to see a Max Payne 3, PS3 exclusive with a smoother control scheme. Maybe even put some sixaxis function into bullet-time.

I am kinda surprised nobody has mentioned sports games yet, has the rest of the world stopped acknowledging them as legitimate games like I have? Actually, now that I think about it, they are usually worse than bad sequals. Imagine if GeoW2 or R2 came out and it was the same disc form last time with minor tweaks to the characters' stats.

Sequels are often awful, its odd how that is because the creators should learn from what was negative and bad about the previous build and improve on it. Also the first max payne on ps2 was sick!

If by sick you mean half-broken, then yes.

GREAT game, horrible port.

The framerate was so bad at times, you couldn't tell whether you were in bullet time or not.

Max Payne 2 was better.

Sequels are sometimes good but only if it's from good developers.

But if it's at the point of the series where nothing can be added with mediocre features it will fail

MGS4 is the best sequel / finale i've ever played. I love how it ties in everything together and deliberately hits us with nostalgia.

Seriously, who Is complaining? I know I'm not. Some of my favorite games are sequels and in some cases I've never played the original.

I do recall a number of articles across the web that railed on games just for being sequels, if I recall I think the argument was that sequels always sell well so they don't have to make them any better just make more. (Which is true sometimes but not lately)

Games like the Final Fantasy series come to my mind. They really don't need to make the games much better, because there are a lot of FF fanboys out there who will buy it for the sake of being more hardcore FF fans than everyone else.

I think there is a limit to where a sequel can go...I mean what number of Megaman and Pokemon games are we on now? I loved Megaman back in the nes and snes generation but now...please just STOP! Pokemon...well I guess people still love em...I don't understand the love but whatever lol. Most of the time sequels DO get better than predecessars thanks to new technology or learning how to use the current technology better such as the PS3. But sometimes...they do tend to FLOP because of well different developers such as the CoD3->CoD4 example. Maybe some of the Sonic games are also examples of bad sequels. Are we talking direct sequels or games with the same character but a different uhh premise? ie.Devil May Cry 1,2,3,& 4 versus MK vs DC Universe from the other MK games?

Some sequels do suck (I'm looking at you Devil May Cry 2), but most don't. In fact, sequels are often better than the original (I'm looking at you God of War 2).

Sequels would be so much better if they made one for every generation and overhaul everything even change the genrers.

I would rather they scrap any future titles and have every team in the world focused on getting the FFVII team back together, we need a world wide search for them and put em together in a locked building until the game we want to be back in our PS3 library is in the making! Stop all sequels! lol...never gonna happen

Sequels are good, due to the fact that they can and sometimes do manage to improve on graphics and gameplay if say the sequel is coing out on the next gen, ie MGS3 3 PS2 MGS4 PS3 etc.

Sometimes though fresh idea's are good too look at Little Big Planet, an original idea thats just for example.

I look forward to a sequel though if I really did enjoy the last one.
