Everyone Needs To Stop Complaining About Game Sequels
Just to clarify from the start, I am all for originality and innovation. We wouldn't be where we are now in this industry without both artistic and technological advancement, and I'm as big a supporter as anyone of IPs like last year's LittleBigPlanet and Mirror's Edge. However, the constant complaining about sequels running rampant in the industry needs to stop.
Yes, there are a lot of sequels and new installments in long-running franchises. Yes, many of the biggest games of last year had a number after them: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Gears of War 2, Devil May Cry 4, Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, and new entries in the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty franchises. But has anyone noticed that these sequels tend to kick serious ass? We don't operate within the same boundaries as films; they've already advanced to a point where new technology and artistry isn't really playing a significant role any more, and games continue to take great strides every few years. Therefore, when a sequel or new installment in a franchise arrives, there's a damn good chance it'll easily eclipse previous titles in the series simply by default. While some may prefer the original Gran Turismo or Grand Theft Auto to Gran Turismo 5 (whenever it shows up) or Grand Theft Auto IV, nobody on earth can make an argument that the sequels are of "lesser quality" than the original games.
I would be up there complaining with everyone else if the sequels were simply getting stagnant, and publishers were releasing new games in a popular series that feature nothing in the way of freshness or advancement. But I almost never see that. Sure, we can debate all day long on MGS vs. MGS4...but really, the mammoth strides taken in depth, story-telling, fluidity, and presentation (not to mention the obvious technical flourishes in terms of sound and visuals) is undeniable. And if we're being brutally honest with ourselves, nostalgia often plays a larger role than we anticipate when embarking on "original vs. sequel" debates. Seriously, let's just admit that; it must be volunteered to be accurate. True, we still need more IPs and unique ideas, but that doesn't necessarily mean we need less sequels. Get to the end of this year, and the Game of the Year nominees will likely include stuff like Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Street Fighter IV, etc. IPs like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake should be fantastic, too, but new entries in established series should rule once again.
And so what if they do? We all care about playing the best of the best, right? So who really cares if those games have a number after them? Usually, they're almost entirely new experiences, anyway! Think about it.

Its the gameplay that matters. I will always love the next GTA or call of duty because they take the original formula and improve or change it.
I really wish they would remake callofduty 2 big red one. That storyline was amazing. You really did bond with the other members of your squad.

Don't have a 360 or PS3 yet(only the original Xbox & PS2 so far), but planning on buying both, 360 & PS3 later this year.
So 3 questions for ya....
is that vid clip from one of the Halo series? And if so, on which, original X or the 360 console?
Also, I want to get the whole H- series, but I always buy used, so I'm usually more than a mite behind the times. Since I just picked up Halo:Combat Evolved for $5,(haven't played it yet though) is my copy the very first one in the series?
Thanks

I can tell you Halo 3 is amazing and so is the online community. Yes Halo CE is the first one and has a great campaign. Some say the best of the series. If you have any other questions just ask.
I still love the original and play mine all the time. What games you got for it?

But what I cant's stand is a secuel that is inferior to its predecessor. To name a few, CODW@W, GHWT.
I really don't expext Uncharted 2 to be less than amazing. But I'm also very excited about Heavy Rain, and I'm looking for Alan Wake if it make it this year anyways.
So bring new IPs, bring some secuels, but allways bring a great gaming experience

Its insane how many people knock COD:W@W just because its set in WWII. Its the same dame game with pluses. Gore!!! More perks, and theirs actually a reason to go prestige other than take away you favorite weapons to earn them again and yes you still the little metal. So please try it before you knock it.

Anyways, thanks for the 411.
I like to complete the whole games collection for each console I own, even if I don't really like that particular game. So for my old xbox, I've got 144 games so far, but always looking for more when they go way down in price.

i like sequels as well, i love the resident evil games, i love resistance games, i like tomb raider back in the day as long as developers know when to stop certain gaming sequels and not over do it then i'm cool with it. But someone has to agree Sonic needs to retire!

I've never had a problem with sequels, in fact I gotta giggle at the idiots who say stuff like Final Fantasy XIII? When is it going to be the FINAL Final Fantasy? Ya know what? Never if I have anything to say about it.
Sequels only tend to blow chocolate donkey balls when they aren't of the numbered kind but just have a subtitle: Sonic unleashed, etc.
Of course, the only sequel this world really needs is CHAKAN: The Forever Man 2!!!

thought it looked damn damn fine until I saw in-game shots of uncharted 2.. and suddenly there was a killzone 2 moment.
shame that Alan Wake is a 360 only game, but still from what ive seen I'll take Uncharted 2 any day, seeing as they have been working on Alan wake since before the Spectrum 48k (lol).. you would expect great things, but think about history of over due games.. very rarely do they deliver.

But anyway I hope Alan Wake is good. I also have high hopes for inFamous and Uncharted 2. I am 50-50 excited about KZ2 at this point because shooters are beginning to bore me the more I play Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey but I will buy it nonetheless I am just getting less enthusiastic about it. I will buy GoWIII even though I never played the first two.

Lack of change in gameplay elements. Yes we want some things different, but what we really want is more of the same. If you require us to learn a whole new controller layout, you are going to suck.
Better objects. Not to say a new engine is required each time, but better graphics, sound, AI, textures is a huge feature in sequels.
Good ties to the first game. It doesn't matter if you have extended the story thru games on other platforms, books, movies, comics, what have you. The sequel should move somewhat seamlessly from the first game to the next, so that we don't lose the story.
Examples of good sequels:
GRAW 2
R6V 2
Gears 2
FFTA 2
Examples of bad sequels:
Halo 2/3. Changed way too much from Halo: CE to even be considered a sequel. Not bad games in their own right, just shitty sequels.
Condemned 2. I understand that Sports games need to change things up to make people think they have to buy the new one, but don't tell me that every single aspect has changed from the previous version.
Resistance 2. This would be in the above list if they simply LEFT CAMPAIGN COOP ALONE!!! motherfarkers. gah.

Complete agreement with you on the Resistance 2 comment. I loved the campaign co-op of part one and when I bought part 2 and loaded it up and sat down with my fiancé to play it we were both pissed beyond belief that we had some weird ass not campaign co-op bull to deal with.
And also, Condemned 2 is a sports game?

Which is why i don't understand why fear is so overrated. I had no problems with that one.

Sometimes though fresh idea's are good too look at Little Big Planet, an original idea thats just for example.
I look forward to a sequel though if I really did enjoy the last one.
