Sony: We Said No PS2 B/C For The PS3, And We Meant It
Ah well, perhaps we were hoping for too much. Sony did change their minds concerning their view of the force feedback option as a "last-gen feature" - yep, we got the Dual Shock 3 now - so we thought Sony might backtrack again on the backwards compatibility debate.
Several recent rumors began to support the idea that Sony might be wavering on their initial claim, the one that said they want to focus on the future and continue to keep PS2 b/c out of the PS3. Some sources claimed Sony was searching for PS2 emulation possibilities (the PS3 can play PS1 games, but it can no longer support PS2 software), but according to an e-mail they sent in reply to TheKoalition, this just isn't true. Here's the message that kills the speculation:
"When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games. I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3. At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3. I think you will agree that the list of 1st party exclusive games for PS3 is growing quickly and the quality of them is great. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, GT5: Prologue and the up-coming Killzone 2 show that we are very serious about bringing exciting, innovative and fun games to PS3."
Bah. Oh well, that's why those of us with extensive PS2 libraries have a PS2 sitting next to the PS3, right? If you don't, we strongly suggest picking up one of those slim, sleek PS2s for only $130; it's a purchase you won't regret if you still love to play your old games. And when Sony said PS2 b/c for the PS3 was gone, they meant it.

i dont know much about the matter, but honestly, how much would it cost to be able to play ps2 games?
all it would take is an emulater program. they only run off dvds dont they?
the ps3 can play dvds. i would have thought playing a ps1 game would have been alot tougher.

60GB ps3 also dropped to 500 later on.
that's 100 dollar more than now.
they even had the 20GB ps3 for even lower price.
what gives?
i was going to wait on the price drop but i heard sony will discontinue it. i went and bought the 60GB and overkilled Resistance1 and patiently waited for more games to come out.
I also bought a xbox360 at the time to play gears of war and other minor xbox exclusive titles.

If it's true, then that really sucks cause I need to find more switching units to add my future PS3 & 360 consoles to(I've got all ten jacks, plus an additionalold 5-in-1 switcher unit hooking up most of my consoles A/Vcomponents already.)
HEY Sony, damned shame< I would've really loved to add another + to your sales sheets but now you won't be getting my $500 at all.
You just gave me no choice but to buy my future BC 60GB PS3 from one of those hoarding re-sellers.

Your comment just proves that what they say about self-absorbed putz's that assume are true!
If you put your glasses on, just maybe you will be able to actually read my first post above. WTF, even Stevie Wonder could see why at least one of us, has a serious need for B/C on my future PS3 purchase.
And another thing, I buy up to 10-15 used games for multiple consoles at one time & don't always have the time to play most of them till very much later on(as if it's any of your f*cking business).
So next time, why don't you try spewing out that stupid assumption for someone who really give's a sh*t...,
because SON, I surely don't!

@BikerSaint - Now, you know why i didn't read your first post? CAUSE I DIDN'T BOTHER READING ANYBODY ELSE'S COMMENT. I HAD NO TIME. The comment wasn't to you anyway. Also, i said, "In a way", at the start, "IN A WAY". "IIINN AAAA WAAAYY".
@Kevadu - Yeh, well i didn't know that not having a b/c eliminates the need to actually buy a PS3 [i know many people that didn't buy a PS3 because of that one reason, and ended up buying a damn Wii & a 360], hence why i said "silly".
@Akuma07 - Yes, i am pretty much what my name says on the tin, but hey, i think you're one too. And yes, i did read that article. Nostalgia is [arguably] a good thing but remember, PS3 is preparing experiences for us in the future, and we'll all be longing for those high & mighty PS3 games back in the day aswell.
@ WorldEndsWithMe - Of course they're worth playing AGAIN, but what i'm really trying to say here that -- once you someone has a PS3, i think that person would be too busy playing PS3 games, and that those who won't buy a PS3 for the sake to play PS2 games on that system are silly. At least get a PS2 for it. --
{^That statement is literally what i was aiming to say in the first place}

I realise how my first comment was presented badly so you all easily misunderstood what i was actually trying to say. If the edit button was still there, i'd change it. I apologize. BUT, CAAALLMM DOOOWN, PPEOPPLE. Or die.

When we and my friends where lil kids nothing was cooler then the PS2. My friend mike got one the first day and we where simply stunned at the realism of it. It was revolutionary for its time and I was a HUGE Sony fan its whole cycle. It had an enormous library that could satisfy everyone. All you SE fans had great RPGS like FF, Kingdom Hearts, the list could go forever. For me it was GTA3 and GT3. Those games where changers of the industry. Hell the PS2 was even in many rap songs. Admit that not one of you sitting here dident love the PS2. You would be lieing.
Im sure removing BC on the best selling console of all time is a good plan. Jeez Sony I can why your dominating this gen.

@ BikerSaint - from the sound of your first post you don't have a PS3 or 360 yet but have still managed to have "ten jacks, plus an additionalold 5-in-1 switcher" filled up... From the sound of that you don't have time to play PS2 games... what the heck do you have hooked up that needs all those jacks??

@Douchebaguette,
<<<<CAUSE I DIDN'T BOTHER READING ANYBODY ELSE'S COMMENT. I HAD NO TIME. >>>>
Well, that's why the problem, you started talking about non-B/C people being silly, before you even knew why for some, and I'm one of those non b/c guys you lumped in all together. That's why the response!
Yeah, it was about money in the beginning when the 60 & 20GB'er's were out cause I didn't have any spare bucks to get one during that time. But now that I've got it, it's "ONLY" about needing more rear jacks to plug any new stuff into.
And BTW, "in a way" is NOT a disclaimer"
********************************************
@ Alienange,
You're right, I sure don't have as much time as I'd like to play all my games, cause I'm usually on my Harley or doing my club's biz.
But whenever I get a chance, I do play, alot. Just finished playing COD 2& 3 on my PS2, & decided to go back & play COD1 again on my old Xbox, also alternating it with PS2's Killzone1 too(I alternate games whenever I get stuck, that way, have some fresh thoughts on how to beat the level apon my return to it).
About my need for all the jacks, I've gotta home theatre system set-up, using a Sony A/V digital control surround center w/10 jacks in the back. But, most of my A/V components tied up most of the jacks,.........Sharp 32" TV, Sony dual dubbing cassette deck, a Realistic turntable for my vinyl collection, Sony 5-disc carousel DVD/CD player, a Samsung dual DVD/VHS recorder, with a Bose 10-cube surround sound speaker system, And a humungous Bose sub-woofer that needed to jacked too.
I've also got 9 gaming consoles that I tied into it with the few remaining jacks and a
5-in-1 splitter box into the A/V unit, my Jaguar, 3DO, Genisis, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, & old Xbox. I put my PS1 away when I got the PS2, & now I'm going to have to put my Genisis away too just to free up some jacks when my PS3 Xbox purchases come later this year cause I haven't been able to find another 5-jack(or higher) splitter box. Well, at least oone that doesn't look like crap on my entertainment wall.
And to top it off, I don't even have an extra spot to even place any more components or console(but I'll figure out a way to cross that bridge too, after I get more gaming consoles, LOL).
*******************************************
@ Blaiyan
I guess you're another one who didn't read my first comment, it's not just because I was hoping to pay cheaper for it, I didn't have the bucks to buy it when the B/C machines were out, so I've been waiting to see if the rumors that "Sony's going to add B/C or a emulator to their next batch of machine choices" were true or not.
I actually need B/C because I need extra plug-in jacks into my home theatre system. Right now I can't add anything else to "UNTIL" I can take other units off it, & that is exactly what I DON'T want to do. If I can get a B/C machine I can pack my PS2 away for safekeeping. Even then, I'll still need more jacks for when I get a 360 later this year too.
BTW, my PS2(fatty model) is just one of the 9 gaming consoles I have hooked up, & I've been playing "Killzone-1" all this week.
And since I'm still collecting games & consoles, I've got 95 PS games for it, & 532 PS1 games(original PS1), I'll be playing PS2 games for a long time. That's why "I" need B/C.
And since Sony just stated once again that they won't do B/C again, I'm planning to buy a "brand new" original 60GB'er from a reseller so I can get all that B/C & other extra stuff that it came with. Then the only thing I'll need left to do is put a much bigger hardrive in it.
********************************************
@ SaladFingers,
Yup, in total agreement with you, glad to see

Almost every videogame player that I know has/had a PS2. None of those who have a PS3 plays PS2 games anymore.
Yes, nostalgia and everything... I have my RE and MGS collection closed and well stored, I'm not going back, I love to play and have a little time to do it, so I'll be playing new games in this short gaming periods.

I'm betting Sony is secretively refining the emulation software, and when PS2 sales FINALLY stop Sony will include the emulation software in a system update... or sell it on the PSN store.
Even if they didn't, wouldn't it be possible to install a homebrew PS2 emulator on the PS3?

But I agree with Pavlovic, people cry that the system is to expensive (which i don't think it is) so Sony removes a component due to probably research and usage on the console and people still complain. I paid over 400 bucks for my launch console and i still think it was a damn good investment and i still think the 399 price dag is damn worth it,why can't people see that.

As with rumble, I think Sony's anti-BC position is more spin than a real rejection of BC.
They decided to cut BC for cost and to push PS3 sofware and, for some reason, have to pretend that it's some kind of philosophical mandate.
Maybe it's a Japanese thing.

It would be great to have the PS3 work with PS2 software. One option would be a homebrew that would allow you to play the games from a hard drive. USBLOADER, HDLOADER for PS2 as examples.
I have not opened a game case more than once in several years for My PS2. I load the game on my hard drive, put the game back in the case and let it sit as a backup. I only use the laser on the PS2 for 3-4 seconds, and only when it loads up the hard drive. Then I have a huge 800gb list of games to play.
I went out and bought a spare "Fatty" system from gamestop for $48 as well, just in case my old one dies.
I have a spare backup hard drive I could easily slip into a powered enclosure and plug into my PS3 (40 turned to 500) if I could actully play the games on it.
I still play PS2 games. There are still new games my kids want to play that are not available for the PS3 (Ben 10 Alien Force). When my son gets older, I would love to let him play GOW 1 &2, PoP series, Metal Gear 1-3, All of the Final Fantasies, Shadow of colossus and many many more.
I just introduced him to Kingdom Hearts, and he is hooked.. PS2, way too big of a library to ignore.
Real reason is probably that there is no real profit for Sony or the publishers since no one buys "New" PS2 games anymore. All the cash goes to the reseller.

would it be hard to repair my ps2 myself?
it's a disc reader problem, it makes some scrachy noises and next the game freezes...

Anyway, my comment was a stab at the PS3's not-as-good-as-we'd-hoped momentum. I'm not saying the PS3 doesn't have momentum, just not as much as it needs. Since the PS2 is still selling, and since Sony is still turning a profit on PS2 hardware, it's in their best interest to keep it alive as long as possible, probably until (or shortly before) they start breaking even on PS3 hardware.
