Final Fantasy XIII "New Vision" Countdown Reveals New Trailer
'sigh' Well, at the very least, it's the best look yet at Final Fantasy XIII's gameplay. We're not about to call it a "new vision" that rocks the world, or whatever, but it's still fun to watch.
The mysterious countdown has ended and as most of you already learned before the "momentous" unveiling, it was for a brand new FFXIII trailer. The good news is that despite not having any big announcements to go along with it, the video is both lengthy and even somewhat informative in terms of gameplay details. First of all, yes, the game does look that good - the real-time combat sequences are gorgeous - and the intricate character modeling is just insane. That's about what we expect from FF, though, right? As for the gameplay, it's a little difficult to distinguish how the battles will progress, but clearly, they're fast-paced with plenty of sweet action possibilities. For the first time, too, we get a distinct feeling of variety and diversity between the characters, although again, we're not entirely sure how everything comes together. Are we able to pause at any time? Do we issue commands on the fly, and can we change them in the midst of execution? How about magic? ...or is some of what we see in this trailer considered "magic?" Yes, we still have lots of questions, but at least now we have some solid gameplay to examine.
If you haven't already seen it, go ahead and visit the Final Fantasy XIII website. It's a damn good piece of eye candy, but unlike the previous lengthy trailer (which was all CGI), this one gives you more of a sense that, yeah, this is a real game. We're gonna do stuff, and not just watch and drool. ...as if we've ever done that in a FF, where they're typically 40-50 hours in total with maybe 4 hours of actual cut-scene or cinema.

Even the most hardcore fanboy has to eventually sit down and read the hardware specs do the deductive reasoning and statistical math and admit to himself and the rest of the world that the 360 is the lesser of the two machines from a hardware aspect and admit that the upscaling of standard definition graphics is just a crutch to make things appear better than they really are.
Granted the upscaling is done well but the true heart of it is that it is still upscaling and not native

The whole xbox thing obviously is slowing it down for us in America and we know they had to tone the game down further to make it multiplatform.. The real kicker in the trailer is what it says at the end.. In Production.. Wow. Worst ending to a trailer ever. They wouldn't even say coming soon.. I came from NES and SNES final fantasies so pretty lights won't make me ignore all the nonsense that is coming along with this new era of square.

They never stated any such thing. Stop making stuff up.
Soon after the original announcement of FFXIII they did make comments to the effect of trying to reduce the time between the Japanese and worldwide releases (reduce, not eliminate), however they stopped saying that well before the 360 version was announced.
As I have stated before, Square (and now S-E) has *always* taken 4-8 months to get FF games from Japan to the US. These are the facts. Look up the release dates yourself if you don't believe me. The most recent title, FFXII, took over 7 months. The shortest delay (4 months) was with FFIX, which was a fairly simplistic game. Given the size and scope of FFXIII, do you really think it's going to be a quick localization.
Current (admittedly rough) estimates for the release dates are entirely in line with that sort of timeframe. So what basis is there for claiming that the game has been 'severely delayed just for the production of the xbox version'?

It is a lot of action in it and have to think fast.
If the story sticks and is driving me on further in to the epic on a full 1920x1080p res. It will be 1080p right? they can't allow them self for any lower.
Final Fantasy is known for pushing the graphically side of gaming. They have time to further polish on this game so I don't think that is final product.

I can all but guarantee that SE is going to do everything in their power to make the games identical in every way. They are trying to appeal to a larger audience and to do anything short of near identical will have the community in an uproar and that will piss all over Microsoft's party and hence cause drastic financial repercussions for SE in the future. They know it deep down we all know it. So that being said I believe that they will compress run native 420p and rely heavily on hardware upscaling for the 360 version and then put in some exclusive DLC to soften the fact that it is not natively in true HD. Anyone worth their salt will know that the superior system for running a game of this endeavor is the PS3 but visually they will be very very similar and no one is really going to care that the 360 version is a bumped up SD version of the game since the upscaling of the hardware is actually very good and I don't think that anyone who has played a 360 can argue that.

Well, M$ft better be careful because I agree that the 360 version will probably pale in comparison to the PS3 version. After all, it was developed exlusively for the PS3 late into its development cycle.
M$ft dodged a bullet when Kojima and Konami stated MGS4 could not be done on the 360 so there would not be a port.
Alas, S-E doesn't have Konami's integrity seeing as how it is willing to whore itself out for M$ft green.
Well, now we'll see if the 360 can pull off a decent port; but I doubt it.
This might be the first game with a really inferior 360 port.

What if, and this is a hypothetical so don't go postal Josh ;) but what if S-E finishes up with the PS3 version for us outside of Japan and turns their shifty gaze to the 360 version. Now, they truck along for a while with it and start running into issues of data compression and not having the architecture to deal with the calculations and physics and similar lighting and all the things the cell does. They try work arounds and the like and come to a point where they say it isn't possible to make the game identical on the 360 and have to gimp it or even decide to pull the entire project in order to not gimp it. What happens then?

I love how you guys say ALL month F*** SE, They are traitors!, im not getting this!, then this comes out you all dog the 360. Honestly double standard much? And you guys call ME that fanboy..
I will bet you all it will look exactly the same on both versions. Why do I say that? Because thats how every single multiplatform game has looked since and it isn't going to stop now.
I have never played a FF game. But recently (and because listening to you guys talk about how good RPGs are) I bought kingdom hearts. I always loved shooters but this shocked the hell out of me. Its made by SE and I honestly thought it was one of the best games I ever played. The depth and everything was great and I honestly told alot of friends on live about it and they to are starting to get RPGs. SE has given us a taste of what you guys have enjoyed for years and all you guys can say is "I hope the 360 version is S***. Real cool guys..Im sure dumping on new fans like me is really in their interest. Im willing to give this title a shot when it comes out and I know for a fact that many others are.
Just keep underestimating the competition. Sony and its fans have done a good job of that recently.
And no this is not for everyone. As im sure their are those more open minded.

I, for one, am very excited for FFXIII and could care less it's on the Xbox. All I have to say is if they do make a great RPG and it sells well, (period) then they better keep up with the quality because I feel that SE has been lacking in that department since the start of the new gen.
I'd also like to add that they BETTER keep making games multiplat after Star Ocean and Versus or I will be very angry. It's one thing to say they don't favor a console and quite another to truly not favor a console. Mostly because in the end SE used to be my favorite developer. If I can't play all of their games (THE GOOD ONES AT LEAST!) then it is very upsetting. I feel that any rpg fan will feel that way as well...

FFXIII was initially developed from the ground up for the PlayStation 3; the White Engine was specifically designed for Sony's machine. Furthermore, they've admitted to struggling a little bit in order to adapt this game to the Xbox 360, which is why many are assuming the PS3 version will indeed be superior. There IS a basis to that.
You may recall the games designed exclusively on the 360 and then ported to the PS3...? Didn't turn out well, did they?
Furthermore, there really isn't a need to attack anyone in this thread. Some people may not fully understand the other side of the argument, and they don't give the 360 enough respect, but you're only showing that you don't know much about Square-Enix, the FF series, or how FFXIII development has progressed.

FACT most multiplats where produced on the 360 first (It is however starting to change now)
FACT GTA IV was first produced on the PS3 and it shows when you put a side by side comparrission, the only reason that the PS3 version dosn't look that much better is because Houser wanted them to be identicle... if it wasnt for that, then we all know that the PS3 would have easily beasted the 360.
FACT FFXIII was produced on the PS3 first and it was in production for a long time well before the 360 version was announced, therefore these graphics are and will only be on the PS3 version, I know for a fact the 360 version will look a lot weaker.
Josh, seriously next time you want to back up your system bring in some facts as well, not just some "What about other multiplats?"

Another thing I find funny is how you "know" the 360 version will be weaker. You hear that guys. He can see the future.
I like how you talk "facts" but bring nothing.

now take that and reverse it. That's what FFXIII will be like for the 360.
oh, and yes i know there's probably something in some press release that says the versions will be identical, but get real. I dont trust Enix farther than I can throw them, and neither should you.

May I remind you.. the PS3 version was praised by a lot of the Rockstar Developers (The ones that made GTA IV if I may add) over the 360 version. But of course, theyre ONLY the people that make the game, what the hell do they know right?

The words "stock" and "command" are right above the menu of commands, and I have no idea what that would point to.
That's all I could read from the trailer. It seems that Square-Enix thought enough not to include any other info, even in Japanese, on it.

One of the big reasons I think this is such game like Gran Turismo 5. It's an exclusive gane n look how gorgeous it is. 1080p/60fps with up to 16 cars per track. Its practically playing CGI graphics in real time. If this game went multi-plat, I doubt it'll look even close to it. Really, I dont mean to bash but I dont think the 360 can implent such graphics in a racing game like GT5. They try to compete with Forza 2 n its not even close. Then they'll probably try it again with Forza 3.
Pls know that I only believe things when I see it, and so far I dont see many, if any, say 360 exclusives cant be done on the ps3. I did vice versa

I really wasn't that blown away by the graphics like everyone else has been. Like always the CG was flawless, but once the real-time kicked in, it just looked good. Not Killzone, Gears or MGS4 good.
Maybe cause it's a different sytle, I don't know...
Anyway, one thing I don't like about the trailer are the NPCs...they look so stiff and stand out like sore thumb. It reminded me a lot of the NPCs in FF10. The main characters looked awesome, but the regular town folk always looked, and moved horribly.
What's up with that? I really didn't expect to see that in FF13. I thought it happened on the PS2 because of the system's limitations.
It's just weird to look at, the main freaks are all detailed, and everyone else looks generic as hell.
