Capcom Expects To Sell 5-6 Million Copies Of Resident Evil 5

After all but confirming that Dead Rising 2 would be headed to the PlayStation 3, Capcom went on to speak to Famitsu about their lofty expectations concerning Resident Evil 5.

Now, just as a bit of history, Resident Evil 4 managed to sell over 5 million copies combined on the GameCube, PS2 and Wii, which is the most any title in the series has ever sold. However, Capcom fully expects RE5 to top the sales plateau set by its predecessor: they anticipate around 500,000 units sold on launch day in Japan alone, and in total, 5-6 million copies worldwide during the game's life span. Now, one could argue that RE5 is actually battling RE2, which sold close to 5 million copies all those years ago, but it certainly proves that this franchise ain't stoppin' any time soon. There was a bit of lull there in the late PlayStation era, when Resident Evil 3: Nemesis didn't do quite as well as anticipated, and they released an ill-fated Resident Evil: Survivor that still may be one of the worst games we've ever played. But the entire series shot back to glory with the launch of RE4 and ever since then, survival/horror fans have been eagerly awaiting the launch of RE5. Obviously, Capcom is aware of this, which is why their sales expectations are so high.

Well, the quality of the game probably has something to do with those expectations as well. By now, publishers are well aware that review scores have a profound impact on the sales of their game, so typically, if they're anticipating big sales, they think they've got a damn good game. ...we think they're right.  The game will release on March 13, and if you're prepared to be jealous, prepare to learn that PSXE may...already...hmm...

I hope that this is an accurate prediction, it's the big games like this that really push the quality of future games.

I liked Deadspace which was a competent mixture of the two genres. Plus, this one's got online.

Not sure if it will go that high. Street fighter 4 yes but RE5 not sure. I want SF4 more than RE5.
Been playing too much shooters lately and SF4 is more refreshing.

I doubt street fighter 4 will outsell this, but I too am way more excited about it than re 5. Hell I'm even throwing a launch party that weekend. Resident 5 will be great as well but there so many damn good games on my list at the moment.

Would you believe I've got RE4 sitting on a shelf and have only played it for about 30 minutes?

meh I think RE5 will sell more than SF4, due to the popularity of RE4. i'm a bit iffy about SF, they seemed to have just done to silly after SF2, but ill wait for the reviews and see.

I played the demo on the xbox 360. I gotta say I was a tad bit disappointed. I honestly don't know if i'm gonna buy it for either console.

the graphics however are incredible. I just didn't care for the gameplay

I am with you in that I am disappointed. At least with the demo. The real game could be leaps and bounds better but I feel as if the demo made it seem lacking. It also might be from playing Dead Space because that game kicks extreme ass. Oh well... I will still probably get it. My girl and I will be playing this one.

I wasn't a tad disappointed, I was completely disappointed, this wasn't RE5, this was RE4 with updated graphics! Everything I hated about RE4 back in full strength -
1) some of the worst controls seen this side of Legendary(yeah, THAT bad); I mean, why would it take a game character longer to move the crosshair to a target twice as long as I would imagine it would take in real life? That's just lazy. Capcom should have taken a leaf out of Deadspace's book-EA Redwood balanced the survival horror and shooting aspects perfectly(IMHO)
2) an unmanageable inventory system (think alone in the dark)
3) you gotta get into aim mode to reload(why is that? That makes no sense at all!)
4) just to fire a single shot, you gotta click the left trigger, move the right or left stick(depending on the control scheme being used), and then press X(square on the DS3)-again lazy programming, just to make thigns seem more difficult than it actually should be!
This has definitely slid down from a must-but to a "maybe-rental" for me.

I am extremely looking forward to this game, we have RE4 on Wii and the PS2 best damn game. The Wii version is really fun. I have my special edition already pre-ordered :) I think it's going to sell the amount they are predicting, i can't see SF making anything close to that it hasn't been good for years. But we'll see when review time comes in. I've been told by my friend who has a 360 the controls are difficult so i'll see how the PS3 version is but ifs like RE4 controls i'm ok with that.

Resident Evil 4 being the GOTY of 2005 is a big help and I know there's a lot of people dying to buy this on the new platforms. It's 4 years in the making. However, I don't see 5-6 million sales. Maybe 4-5. There isn't that huge userbase that benefited RE4 (GC first, then PS2 and then the Wii); this will only be on the PS3 and Xbox 360. I'll say 2.5 million at the most on each platform.

Ben, who played the review copy Arnold or you?

I don't think I'm getting this game. For me RE ended with RE3.

I also have RE4 just being there and played it just for a little while... I was very dissapointed because it is not a RE.

You are accepting what I just wrote.

If you think that RE4 is the only good RE it's because it'a a total different game.

It's a good action/shooter game but in no way a Resident Evil

Unfortunately, as I like to oversee a tight budget... I will miss RE5 and go ahead on for Killzone 2... my purchases for this year will probably be, KZ2, GoW, Dirt2... titles I have missed I will look at when they are half price or cheaper. Maybe pick them up second hand too if they are in good condition... and with a little analysis, you can usually see what you are buying, if it has been looked after or not...

Q!

I think Capcom is bang on. Easily sell that many unless the reviews tank. Somehow I doubt that though. You have to be pretty nuts in the head to bad mouth RE4, and if RE5 is at all similar (I'm betting superior) then the numbers will be there for sure.
