Let us all remember to take into consideration the number of second units some people bought after their first one died. I know lots of people who have bought an Arcade and kept their hard drive when something happened to the first one. Lots of people. It is probably not enough to say that the PS3 has more users due to re-buying but I think it is safe to say the numbers may be even closer than we all think.

Just a possibility.

I've mentioned that several times. Taking that into account, I firmly believe there were many more new PS3 owners in 2008 than new 360 owners.

I think you are right about that Ben. 2008 probably did herald in more new PS3 owners than it did with new 360 owners and if that kind of trend keeps up in 2009 which I think is more than very likely then by the end of the year we may be able to say that there are indeed more PS3 owners than 360 owners, but I personally would like to see more dual system owners out there and stop all this back and forth pissing contest that is going on. This is seriously getting worse than politics.

I can understand why you would want more dual system owners, but I just can't bring myself to buy a 360. And, every day the chance gets slimmer. I mean, looking at the year ahead of me, I can't think of a single reason to pay $250 for a 360. I expect the multiplat games to be better or equal on PS3. And I don't expect any of the 360 exclusives to be great enough to warrant buying the system. I just don't. And I really want to. I really want to be able to say, "Well, I own both systems, adn my opinion is..." But, I can't see it. They're hardware is still shoddy. They're online service still costs. I can't see anyone who already has a PS3 being able to justify purchasing a 360.

Maybe if my daughter was old enough to be into console gaming, and I wanted to buy her one of her own, then I'd get a 360, since we've already got the PS3. I think that would be the only situation.

But, even then, I might still go with a second PS3 instead, because then I'd have the added bonus of giving her the ability to watch the blu-ray movies I've bought her on her own television. As it is now, if she wants to watch Ratatouille, she has to use MY TV and MY PS3.

I agree with you Troy. I would like to try Gears of War 1 and 2 but the cost of the 360 for a few exclusives is hardly worth it.

I completely feel your point Troy and honestly the only reason I have a 360 is because I was quitting Gamestop and some kid was trading his in so I told him I would give him 90 cash and Gamestop would only give him 75 cash which is mostly true. Anyway I still think if you can find one for that cheap it is worth picking up just for the few exclusives it does have. I guess the fact that my buddy told me he would give me a free year of XBL sweetened the deal for me but I think I have honestly used XBL a total of 5 hours.

lol...funny story about Gears 2:

My buddy got the game at a midnight launch and brought it over to my house with his Xbox. We both wanted to see how great it would look in HD (he's still standard def). So, we put it on and played for a while, the whole time I'm thinking "This looks like CRAP!" But, I didn't say anything, cuz I knew he was pretty disappointed too. Didn't wanna rub it in.

Anywayz, after we play and we're unhooking everything so he can go home, I notice we've still got the little switch on his composite cables set to standard def. DOH!!!

I then proceded to give him the business for having to use composite cables in the first place. "Man, my joint came with HDMI port standard. I don't have that problem."

To which he replied, "Well, yeah, since you had to take out a second mortgage to buy it, I would expect it to."

Ahhh...good times. :)

Anywayz, I dunno. The titles I hear most about for 360 are Halo and Gears. My boy was underwhelmed with Halo 3. Gears 2 was cool (despite composit cable mishap), but I doubt I would play it at all once KZ2 drops. I pretty much stopped playing R2 when I got the beta (but, I'm slowly getting back into it).

If they came out with a couple super awesome exclusives this year, and I could get it for super cheap, maybe I would. But, I don't see either of those things on the horizon.

the xb360 exclusives are what led me to get one at the end of December. there are actually a good number exclusives worth checking out (right now I'm obsessed with fable 2). but if I have a choice for a game i'm gonna choose the ps3 version. I almost feel guilty owning an xb360 bc how much I think M$ screws people out of money with XBL or wifi adapter,etc. but I'm a gamer above anything and I just want to play the great games out there.

Well since those are shipments ill take it with a grain of salt.

Now, I will say that is impressive tho for such a pricey machine. But recently Sony has stated that PS3 sales are down 9 percent from last year. So im wondering to myself how many where shipped to how many where sold. And sales in America(the king in console shares) show the 360 ahead.

What is worrisome tho is how they came out a year later but are still being outsold. This cant be good for the supposed comeback Sony is planning.

Were see what happens. This year really is the put up or shut up of the PS3.

Also do not forget Sony switched to SOLD numbers as of June 2007, and Microsoft uses shipped still, so there could be a smaller gap, and PS3 might have even taken 2008, do not forget that fact.

to be honest, am quite disapointed, in the first 6 months of the yr, the ps3 was outselling the 360 by quite a margain, so MS responded and dropped the price, resulting in the last 6 months the 360 caught back up to the playstation, sony didnt respond hoping that the better christmas software would get the sales, but as yesterday's article about resistance and LBP having lower than expected sales, showing that although great games to sell systems, ultimately its the price which is number 1 on a shoppers list ( granted probaly not on a hardcore gamers list ) but on your average person's list its going to be price first, games second. I expect Killzone will lead the charge this year but a true sales spike wont happen until the ps3 price is dropped.

Yeah, I think Killzone 2 will get the PS3 off on a good start for the year, and it'll be full steam ahead from there.

I just don't think MS really has an answer for KZ2 at this point. They're dropping the Halo Wars game at the same time, but I'm expecting that to underwhelm. I don't know any console gamers that are hugely into RTS. I think MS is just expecting that to sell off of name recognition.

Anywayz, to stay on topic, I agree that the software sells hardware. And I don't think MS has the software line-up to battle PS3 this year, which will mean that 8 million console gap is going to close...probably quite a bit.

And joystiq just had an article saying that PS3 software sales were up about 15 million units over the year before. Good news, good news!

I would not underestimate the power of the Halo name Troy. Do I think it will be a superior game? Not by any stretch of the imagination. Do I think it will outsell KZ2? No, but I do think the sales will be close in the first few weeks. I really think that is a sad thing but I can see it happening nonetheless. I am sitting on a broken PS3 at the moment that I thought I was getting fixed a few weeks ago but things happen. I for one will still go out and pick a copy of KZ2 up even if my PS3 is still in shop.

The fan burnt up in it. If I turn the system off from the back and leave it off for a while and then try it, it will power up but you can hear that the fan is not running. I probably have a crap load of messages and requests by now. Anyway since all the college crap is paid for I think I may be able to get the ball rolling on Monday. Fingers crossed.

That is a MATCH! but while I agree software matters this match is not cause Gears 2. MS did that good at holiday season thanks to x360 price cut. I have the feeling that most users that purchased Gears 2 ALREADY had a x360 (you know, for Gears 1 and Halo).

Sony management is pretty confident they have the winning hand on this one. Even without a price cut, PS3 sales could match much cheaper X360's last year. Wow. IMO MS console is reaching a plateau, Sony's is ascending and will ascend much faster after KZ2 and much much faster after the expected 100$ price cut.

Good points about MS hardware but I think this is true and follow me on this.

Alot of PS3 guys said this last year. Im not attacking im just saying that MS and Sony have different practices when it comes to that. MS tends to talk about a game and their plans THREW OUT the year as opposed to announcing plans at the beginning. MS has stated they have alot in store this year for the 360 and I believe that.

Finally a battle for software. Software wars tend to only bring amazing games for both of us.

anyway yes Microsoft has a way of holding their tongue when it comes to their games up to the point it is about to release unless it is related to Halo and then they can say what the hell ever they want and fans will not give a damn how long it takes to come out just so long as it does.

I keep hearing rumblings of plans for the 360 this year but I have yet to see anything come to solidity. I have however heard and have seen the plans for the PS3 this year and we keep hearing about these unannounced projects that are supposed to be releasing as well.

I can't stand shooters (which is all you guys keep talking about!), so I'd suggest Valkyria Chronicles. And watch a few Blu-Rays, too. Cars looks great in Blu-Ray. Uh, of course Fallout 3 is my Daddy, but that's cross-platform.

Oh, and on a tangent: I've heard people saying that certain games aren't "exclusives" if they have PC versions (like Halo). That would also be true of FF VII, VIII, and XI... so FF hasn't really been consistently exclusive at all...

I would like to see info on how many 1st time buyers to me thats more of an accurate amount to see who is out selling who. I don't think scond time buyers should count in comparing numbers. not saying it would make a difference but i'm just curious.
Oh and IGN always releases thing they shouldn't to early wonder what the publishers will say? since ben said Feb 2nd which seems right cause i havent' seen a review on KZ2 on any other gaming website.

The 360 is only ahead because of its price drop. But as mentioned before, how many are replacements? I'm also sick of people twattering on about the 'end of the PS3' because of its high price and low sales. But if the end was nigh, surely panic price drops would be in order (just like HDDVD).

I don't think things are as bad as certain camps are making out, mainly because Sony refuse to move on price (for the moment).

I'm just getting really razzed off with all the negative press Sony is suffering at the moment.

I find it laughable that MS have the gaul to point fingers at Sony with their track reord on hardware.

Hey Microsoft! People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw XB360 power supplies!!

Ill make you guys a deal ok?

The FamilyVideo store has rentals of ALL the consoles. I will go tonight and Rent a PS3 for a week.

Now what I want you guys to do is put the GAME of PS3. I will rent up to 4 and try them out. name the titles YOU think are the best the PS3 has to offer and at the end of the week ill give you my unbiased true opinion of the PS3 and the games you guys picked for me.

So what do you say? Im doing this for you guys. I honestly want to know what it has to offer and give the best input I can in future debates.

what r u on about, I could tell you the games I like the most, But why would you go off and do all that to give us your (UNBIASED, lol) opinion of a system that your obviously not keen on. Not sure what your trying to justify to be honest, most people on this site will probably have a PS3 ..

Anyway, if it makes you happy some how, then I deffo recommend pickin up these (the only non multi plats I have for my PS3 at mo), there really good.

Unchartered, MGS4, GT5 prologue.

Dont know about other stuff like littlebig planet, never thought id like it, so never played it. Oh and stay away from Haze and Lair, they are cpmplete gash. But thats only my opinion, you have to try something to be in a position to compair.

Unchartered is a game about taking a flight to Holland with a group of people but instead of taking a flight explicitly for the purpose of traveling as a group you all just buy tickets at the Delta counter. Things go terribly wrong as the rates are higher than expected being an unchartered flight and all and you are left resorting to staying at a cheap youth hostile. Your main character is 37 but this was made in Japan so he looks 14. Then the directors of the hostile make you all work in the kitchen where you get a fungus on your hands from unsanitary working conditions and you have to find a cure.

@ coverton I just wanted to know why you feel as though everyone should be a dual console owner, you don't think a person can be satisfied with playing games on one system, I know exactly what you mean about the stupid bickering from both sides but I wouldn't necessarily say you should have dual consoles I think both sides should enjoy their console of choice and play the games instead all the arguing, back in the day I only had PS1 then PS2 now this gen I did buy 360 simply because it launched first then I eventually traded it for my PS3 cuz its my console of choice and I'm very satisfied with owning one

Never said they should be a dual console owner I would just like to see more people be one. I would like to see this so some of the pissing contests would stop. I also think that if there were more dual owners then people could make fact based opinions about both systems. I for one think the 360 is a decent machine once you get past the faulty hardware it does have some solid entries in the software field that I think are good. I never said I felt people can't be satisfied with the games on one console but are we not all gamers here? There are exclusives worth playing on 360 just like there are exclusives worth playing on PS3 I think the ones on PS3 are better quality by far and there are definitely more innovative and fresh but the fact remains that I play games. Period. That is why I have a console. That is why I have two separate consoles. That is also why I don't own a Wii. I don't like the gimmicky feel of it. So I guess at the end of the day the reason I think I want to see more dual owners is so the pissing and moaning can stop and we can all sit down and enjoy what both world have to offer.

Coverton has a point and dual console owners have the advantage of having the chance to play all the best games from 360 and PS3. They'll generally have better insight in terms of what's actually good or not good. It just really gets annoying when single console owners trash another system/games and they don't even have first hand experience with the system/games. It almost feels like insecurity on that person's part because of not knowing if they made the right/good/popular or whatever the hell reason of a choice in purchasing their console.

If you can only choose one console, be happy with what you have. There's no need to spew garbage to make yourself feel better.

I paid $700 bones for my ps3 a month after the first release. But I finally got around to buying a 360 Premium console off of ebay. I was able to get it for $178, no tax and free shipping. Granted its refurbed but it works great for now. The software on it was what finally got me to buy the console. I like Left4Dead and GeoW so I had to get my copy. I think those games at least are really fun to play. It's a good gaming system that should be considered if the price is right and worth it. So I'm glad I made the purchase, I don't have to worry about exclusives. It's kind of the best of both worlds!

Some people like certain games so they choose dual consoles, it may not be for everyone, but the real issue might be exclusives vs non-exclusives. If all software was nonexclusive, then I would have just stuck with the ps3 no doubt, its just a more solid system with more features, plus it looks oh-so pretty next to my sleek setup.

Alright I just plugged it in.

That thing is extremely quiet! And why dident you guys tell me its got touchstart? That is very futuristic and cool.

Well the models a 40G and its not the backwards compatible one. From just starting it up I like the psp like dash. Its really classy.

So far I for sure see your guys point on the hardware. My elite sounds like a jet in comparison. Plus I honestly prefer this dash and I cant get over that touchstart.

The 28.45 mil and 21.34 mil numbers are actually not sales, they are shipped. The Gamezine writer made a mistake when saying "life-time sales". If you look down the the list he made, the 360 and PS3 numbers are both listed as shipped. The writer even put a disclaimer saying that they'll leave the numbers as shipped. In actuality, the 360 and PS3 sales are less than 28.45 mil and 21.34 mil.

Yes I'm being nitpicky...but damnit those are not actual sales. =) Actual sales for 360 are prolly closer to 27.5 mil and 20.5 mil for PS3. OCD in the house.

I'm two of those 10.77 million... Well, my parents are one and I'm one; they wanted a blu ray player.

I did some calculations for fun and found that the PS3 has sold about 892,201 systems per a year more on average than the 360 (in other words, that's how much higher the number of PS3's sold per a year is vs. 360's sold per a year to date).

might not be equal this summer but with the rumoured price drop this april and games droping like KZ2,heavy rain & RE5 plus infamous & uncharted 2,it will be damn close!!
With Gran turismo,one of the biggest selling franchises ever coming around xmas and god of war3 early next year,its not unreasonable that ps3 will be leading by next march.
I don't consider the wii a current gen console,it does help with the sick(relearning how to walk after bad car crash/short term loss of motor functions)which is really cool and gives gaming a better image,what with all the crasy things the media pins on it !!!

I think 360 has extended their lead slighty due to Gears 2 and especially the price cut.

Does M$ include refurbished consoles in their shipped numbers? lol. I doubt it but we all know that number is high. Its all good having a world-wide sales number of consoles purchased but what is the number for how many 360 owners they are? Some ave bought their 3rd console, which I think is crazy.

Ok here it is. I honestly must say..Snake is one bad mother ***;)

Hardware: Well Ill start with what I like. I love how quiet it is. I love the touchstart and it looks amazing next to the 52 inch. The dashboard is very classy and to the point. I liked messing with the different colors and it was very easy to find everything I needed. I honestly must say the things looks damn sexy in person. In the light I honestly looked at for a moment. Its very clean and doesn't have the powerbrick my Elite has. Which is nice. Overall I would say this thing wins hardware hands down. Its not even a comparison.

Controller: This is where im split. I love the fact that the PS3 doesn't use batteries which must be a relief to you guys. I like the Dpad more as well but I prefer the triggers on the 360. I noticed that the PS3 has a 360 like system going on with the R2 and L2 buttons. Its not the same tho..I like how the 360 uses triggers that concave. Also the buttons stick out on the 360 and I just find it more comfortable. the PS loga in the middle is pretty cool to. Ill call this a tie as as I prefer the layout of the 360 but I love how you dont need to buy batts and the six axis part is a nice touch.

Games

MGS. This game...I cant even get started its that good. I used to think you guys just had it hard because its only on PS but man you guys where not kidding. it truly is in a league its own in terms of sound and graphics..Big props guys big props.

GT5. This game im going to say is a demo. So I wont be mad you cant modify cars tho im wondering why that was left out. Considering its price. It also has alot of things Forza introduced. It has incar like PGR3 which is also a VERY good thing. If the new games fixes a couple small things and allows my own soundtracks it will be a FORCE.

R2. This game was really good. The story kind of left me off because I dident play much and never played the first one but it looks top notch. I liked the guns and killing the Chimera was always a blast. Itsa good game..Honestly I thought it was just a Halo wannabe when it came out but it gained my respect.

Now the multiplatforms surprised me. I expected GTA and Ninja Gaiden to look like crap but they looked just like my versions. I thought all multis looked way better on 360? Oh well..

Overall: From the limited time I spent with it I can say to you guys this. Its not what the Media puts it out to be. Its not even what my friends thought it was. Its a very nice system that got a bad rep because of Sonys arrogance. My friends came over and one of them said "thats things gay". I honestly got a lil angry..Im like dude next time you got something retarded to say keep it to yourself so you dont dumb down the rest of us. I honestly know now why most of you guys hate Xbox fans. Because they say dumb things just like some people who haven't played the 360 say stupid things to. Which brings me to this.

I would be a PS3 freak if it just had Halo and gears. I love those games and the online community of the 360. The PS3 is about MONSTER hardware and bluray(which is amazing btw, watched black knight) I can see where you guys are coming from when you say its a good machine. The 360 and PS3 have different cons and pros. But you really cant lose with either console. The 360 appeals more to me because of the titles I put many hours into and the friends I have on live. But I wouldn't me disappointed at all if I only had the PS3. Sure some things I wish where different. Like the ability to listen to my own music in games and add a couple things here and their like BC. i think Sony spent to much time pissing people off instead of just saying they had a great product. If I had more time I would buy one..I honestly had to stop myself from continuing MGS. As it cost per day to rent and all I set out to realize was accomplished.

So that was my experience with the 3.

Yeah, the custom soundtrack thing is one thing I miss whenever I play on my friend's PS3. For Christmas in 2007, I got Mass Effect and The Ultimate Who collection on two CDs, which I ripped to the 360's HDD and listened to constantly while playing Mass Effect. I still think of Mass Effect whenever I hear any song by The Who.

Just to let your know, The custom sountrack thing was recently implement, only one game I Know of uses the new feature:

Pain

But as new titles come out, custom soundtracks will be used more. For instance, Killzone 2 features in game custom soundtracks! So gangsta!

Well...I suppose I could add that Blu-Ray is a giant advantage and you'll see that in comparison to DVD with movies if you haven't already, and Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet definitely need to be on your list. Get those two games, and then I think you can form a pretty well educated opinion of what the PS3 has to offer right now (not that you can't already; I'm just saying).

You will probably see why we gave MGS4 GoY last year (as many sources did)...it presents one of the best video game stories in history.

MGS is amazing. Plus I love how he never loses his smoke haha.

The cutseens are really long. Which kind of makes it like a movie in a way.

I dident buy one mind you. I only rented one. But now that I have im glad I did it.

They do have custom soundtracks on the PS3, its a newer feature that has only been used by one game so far, Pain.

KZ2 has custom soundtracks tho.

It´s not all about who´s selling most consoles. Mention that the PS3 System is selling more then 50 % more software items than the 360 does. What do you think wich system leading game developers will pick for exclusive titles if this trend goes on? Sure not 360. :-) More exclusiv titles means an unbeatable advantage for PS3 in selling consoles. Brilliant strategy of Sony in my opinion.

Also bud, sony may have been out of order in taking out the bc, at least it was in the 60 gig & original 80 gig. As 4 M$, they completely shat over the people who owned an original xbox ay, they still make ps2 games ;)

I have custom soundtracks on MLB 08 the Show and Wipeout HD. There are probably more games out there with that capability.

I played Gears2. its no better or worse than R2 IMO. I never played Halo myself, but I watched it being played.

PS# plain and simply deserve credit where it is due. PS3 has basically caught up to X-Box360! yay for PS3!(I love my 360) PS3 is going to take over the spotlight again, like ps2 had over the original X-Box. I love both of the systems pretty much equally. If the systems didn't have games that are exclusive, I wonder what would happen then. All games on both systems, hmmmm. The PS3 isn't just for Blu-Ray anymore, specially with Killzone 2 on the way!!!!
