Your Gaming Pet Peeves

Oh, you've got 'em. We've all got 'em. Here are some of mine (and your list, like mine, can include anything related to the industry):

Use the analog for everything!!! ...what face buttons?

This is first on the list because I continually come across new games that focus entirely on the analog and almost completely ignore the rest of the controller. This happens a lot with some sports games, for example, and for the life of me, I can't understand the fascination. You know, there's a reason why many FPS fans don't particularly like the Sony controller for their favorite genre; the analogs have always been too sensitive. The analogs on the 360 controller are stiffer and feel firmer, while the ones on the Dual Shock and Dual Shock 2 gamepads always feel lighter and looser. I have never found them to be pinpoint accurate, and developers are starting to think the analog is the only goddamn button on the controller! Just using face buttons doesn't mean your "last-gen," people. Seriously.

Put in the game, turn the power on, and...why am I still waiting?

It's one of my longest-running pet peeves and one that typically kept me away from PC gaming. I always hated putting in a PC game and then having to spend a half-hour fiddling with settings and options before I could even play the first level. Oh, the sound card needs adjusting. Now it's the resolution. Now I need to install something. Now I need the gamepad and not the mouse. Now I need to download a patch. Blah, blah, blah. Unfortunately, a lot of this has popped up in some form in the console realm, but it's not quite as bad. I just hate having to wait through some sort of update whenever I go to play a new game; there was a time when you put a game in and played it. Not that the results aren't worth the wait; I'm just saying.

Worthless NPC dialogue

I may be one of the few people left who appreciate becoming immersed in a virtual world, which is why I always like to talk to everyone in the area and hear what they have to say. This dates back to my RPG-intensive days of gaming, and I always despised the vast number of townspeople, villagers, city-folk and what-have-you that never once had anything useful or interesting to say. They don't have to say anything, as far as I'm concerned. But if they're going to talk, I'd like to think they'd have something interesting to say, especially considering the fact I'm usually playing a stranger who is just meeting everyone for the first time. I dunno...I know it can be challenging to write a zillion pages of script for basically non-existent characters, but it always irked me.

Reviewers who only care about "innovation"

Usually, the elitist critics use this word in every other sentence; it's just an excuse to score a game lower and to feed their gigantic egos. The bottom line is that while I always applaud innovation and evolution, and I don't condone shameless repetition, there's no reason to tear down a game because it's not "new." You may not have noticed, but there are plenty of different genres, and just about every year, we can point to several titles that absolutely innovate in some way. ...is there any particular reason every single title has to "innovate" in some way? It's an effing sequel. What do you want now? Oh, Twisted Metal 2 was too much like the original...what were you looking for, Ace Combat? Crash Bandicoot? I mean, the entire thing just drives up the wall.

So those are a few of mine...how about you?

I hate it when someone feels the need to state they own both systems and somehow feels it validates their opinions and makes it less fanboyish.

" oh i own both hd systems and i have to say that gears of war makes uncharted look like a ps1 game, dont call me a fanboy though, if you look at my sig, i have a gamer tag and a psn, so i can't be wrong"

That type of sh*t is annoying the hell out of me lately, i see it in a lot of other forums, not so much here.

Also, that innovation peeve is spot on Ben

You have to remember that most of them probably don't have a PS3, and they still say that, to make them look like they have a strong foundation on their opinion.

Not to mention that when people say crap like that it makes people who do have both systems and are not screaming belligerent fanboys look like asshats in some places. I cannot count the amount of times I have given praise to a game on one system at a certain forum and then have been berated for being a fanboy because I like the other system..... oooooooo.....

So I guess that brings me to my pet peeve and sorry to high jack your comment with this.

I absolutely loathe this generation's propensity of hate toward the opposing console from either side. I hate the fanboys that have both systems but cannot pull their heads from their asses long enough to judge both systems on their merits just as much as I hate people that say anyone that likes games on a certain console is a dumbass because that console or this one is inferior. I personally like both consoles for certain games on each that are exclusive. I like to own multiplatform games on my PS3 because I like to play online for free and I like having truly native HD, but I also like Mass Effect, Fable 2, and Lost Odyssey.

Both system have their inherent merits and yes the user interface on the XBL was a bit nicer and friendlier when the PS3 launched, now it is a toss up and I could really not say one wins over the other.

Stop the hate. Let's just play some video games.

The one thing I hate most of all is when you are forced to watch a cut-scene. Its OK when its the first time, its just when you have been killed and you have to restart the level and yet again have to watch the cut-scene. I hate having to not be able to skip the credits after you have finished the game. I swear Devs do this on purpose.

I hate Publishers that come out with yearly updates with their franchises and try to pass them as new games when really they've only worked on the game for a few months, tweaked some of the game modes, change the way the inter-face looks, give it a sub-name and then charge full price for it. There are people who fall for it.
If I buy one of these games, I then wait about 4 years before I buy another from that same franchise, so that way I there is noticeable difference between the two.

hell yeah bamf, I agree with you on that one. I know the cool cutscene probably took weeks to create and the developer felt really proud about it, but that's no excuse for making me watch it again and again just coz I wasn't fast enuf on the trigger or because the boss fires too many cheap shots (Legendary, Silent Hill:Homecoming)

•I hate paying $60 to beta test glitchy games until they feel like patching it. Games used to be complete when they were released, but now dev's get to shove unfinished crap into our systems. I understand a stability patch if a game needs it, but if a game gets a patch the first day it is out it makes you wonder if the devs ever even played the game before shipping it.

•Long intro sequences. I dont need to watch the opening movie for 30 seconds every time i boot up. Let me skip the opening sequences after i have a save game, that way we both win.

•Putting the "new save game" option at the top of the list. In Far Cry 2 i have about 15 saved games because i save in a hurry and forget to scroll down one box. Put the 'new save game' option at the bottom where it belongs.

I for one hate yearly sports games!!! I'll give you a few reasons:

1. It get's expensive to buy the new version every year.

2. They could get A LOT more done if they had time to just add to the existing game and update them. Instead of making a whole new one in a year, they need to give support to the current game. Such as madden, they need to stop trying to add different gimmicks every year into a whole new game and just make the existing one better. They have a winning formula, but they should keep the rosters very up to date, add more content and fix the issues that are there, instead of making a new game with more issues.

Another pet peeve I have is that developers rarely listen to what actual gamers have to say. You could go onto a majority of message boards and it's usually got some ideas that every loves and wants. The developers say, oh, we've been reading what people want and then they come out with something that is supposed to new and innovative and great, but it sucks and nobody wants it. Then they wonder why their games don't sell.

The last pet peeve that I can think of is EXPENSIVE downloadable content! Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the biggest culprits! $2 for a song? I mean, come on? That's insane! We get over 80 songs in a $60 game but we have to pay $2 bucks for 1? I want to be able to expand a song library of hundreds of songs but I'd have to sell both my kidneys and a testicle for that! And some games it costs $5 for a costume or some type of skin pack? That just seems insane to me. I usually don't buy that stuff but if it was cheaper, I wouldn't mind laying down some extra change for a some add-ons.

I hear u one sports games, I don't play them anymore because of that. I'm thinking they could just take Madden and patch it with the new players and stats and voiceovers for about 3 years before they need a new one.

that's why its cheeper to buy the item in a bundle, if it comes in one

like the other day when i FINALLY bought super stardust HD, i bought the bundle that came with the game and both expansion packs for $15

but that is however a game and expansion packs

but they have been comin out with full albums on RB & GH
those are relatively the same price as a cd
so it's not too bad

That's why I try to get the PC versions of them. You just edit the rosters with updates or edit them yourself from year to year. NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 is the best hockey sim ever devised but you have to update the rosters, affiliations, leagues, etc., every year.

And EA has been screwing the PC gamers the past few years with their sports titles.

Also agree about RB and GH with the songs. Would be nice if you could transfer songs from your IPod, PC, MP3 player, or whatever.

Although I agree that Rock Band DLC is somewhat over-priced (it should be $1-$1.50, depending on how many you buy at one time), they are hardly the worst offenders.

There are games which charge huge amounts to unlock items which you can unlock if you play the game; those are the worst offenders.

My biggest pet peeve is when the damn game boasts AMAZING graphics and then it comes out and it's glitchier than hell. I also hate when reviewers become too anal about a game. I feel that is a game being made had goals that it wanted to achieve and they were achieved and the technical parts about it are working right then it deserves a 100. Take mirror's edge... I believe it achieved what it was trying to achieve but it got reviewed low for being too trial and error. Who didn't see that coming? I think ME was great.

I've probly got a million but let's start with these for now:
As a writer I'm a language nut, but subtitles force me to read them so I turn them off to focus on the action taking place in the scene BUT at various points they speak so low I can't hear a damn thing.

Also in that milieu is anybody who insists that at every turn "The english voice acting sucks so I always turn on the original Japanese and then read the subtitles" It's like just shut up and listen to it in the language you speak, you have no clue if the Japanese acting is better unless you grew up with that language, know it inside and out, have an appreciation for Japanese acting styles, etc and so forth. It doesn't make you hardcore or better than everyone else.

It's not always because people think they are hardcore that they change to the Japanese voices. I always feel that a lot is lost in the English Translation. Take Valkyria Chronicles. There is a very emotional song that just doesn't sound right when it is sung in English. Oh well... It's just preference I guess.

i agree with you on the subtitles, but sometimes its not because they talk low, its cause they say something and i couldn't quite understand it cause of the way the character said it

but the voice acting in japanese can sometimes actually "fit" the character better than the english voiceovers
however, i find that this mostly applies to anime and not games

for instense, FFX and FFVII: Advent Children both had terrific voiceovers
because the developers and crew took their time in finding a voices that fit the characters

anime on the other hand usually has mediocre to bad english voice acting (it can have bad japanese also)
BLEACH is the perfect example, because i find that the english acting is ok, and most of the english voices "fit"
but the japanese voice acting is far superior in BLEACH

I get what you mean about certain voices and songs, and I agree as far as that, but if something is lost in the translation then it is lost in the subtitle translation too, if you speak the language and can catch the story better then I have no beef with you. It's just that people assume one must be better than the other, for all we know Japanese folks think they picked a horrible person to fit that role.

i agree with you on how reviewers only care about "innovation"
what ever happened to playing a game just cause it was fun

look at God of War.... it wasn't really THAT innovative.... the reason it was so great is because it was just so damn fun that you couldn't put it down for 5 seconds

another pet peeve of mine is how everybody is boycotting SE just cause they sold their souls to M$
granted, i did feel betrayed when they announced that FF13 was gonna be on 360....
i hated that SO much

but heck, at least its still ON the PS3

i will buy FF13 regardless of its exclusive status or w/e
and i will buy FFvs13 cause i think it looks even sweeter :)

if you don't buy it because of betrayel, or cause SE is neglecting the PS3.... well that's just stupid

if, on the other hand, FF13 actually turns out to be crappy, then i could see not buying it, cause that would be a waste of money to buy a crappy game

I hate:
-How in most FPS games, the gun doesn't move at all when running, just stays completely steady.
-When gameplay rules/limitations only apply to you, but none of the other enemies (boosting in Xenosaga).
-Easy games without harder difficult levels.
-Invisible walls (don't we all)?
-Action being entirely prioritized over depth.

Mmmh, what really pet peeves me is:

1. Online Cheaters - people who use every glitch and cheat they can get to have an advantage in game. What about fair play? Even shooters are E-sports and E-sports are sports. Do they use 10cm spike shoes while playing football?

2. Restrict or cut games. Hellooo! Whats the point about cutting game scenes or play in games desinged for mature people? I think its a good thing to protect minors from playing games that are not designed for their age. But if something is 17+ or here in Germany 18+. Keep your scissor away. Games are like art and need the same protection. The protection of the minors is designated to their parents and the guy who sells the game (hopefully not to minors)

3. Well this is new, but very annoying. Online bad and nasty speaking and the lag of players attitude to come along with each other. Example: Socom. When its around twelve in Germany on Sunday, its Saturday evening in the US. Ok guys come over and play. If they join a German team the want all of the team to speak English instantly. If a German is on their side and is not skilled enough in English they just vote him out. Well I dont say they are all the same, but it happens to often. If you dont want to fair or team play with us, stay out of the German speaking rooms! Another example which matches all nations. The number of people who are agressiv and offend others online increases day by day. See "HOME" - and we PS3 users can call us lucky - just jump in a Online 360 match of CoD for 10min. Im sure even you will learn some new words. The pitty is theres nothing we can do about.

Huh. Lemme see if I can think of some.

Lazy publishers that give one side of the coin something on a game and doesn't give the other side the same effort. Trophies from Namco Bandai, namely. I don't know WHY this bothers me, but it does. A lot.

Dev teams not taking advantage of DLC. FREE DLC. Why not do more nerdy crap for gamers like new cars, new weapons, new clothing and stuff for games like GTAIV? New songs? Updated radio news? Stuff like that that'll keep people playing the game after they've finished it.

Dev teams taking advantage of PLAYERS with DLC. Again, Namco Bandai. EA. LucasArts. Pointless DLC -- some of which is ALREADY ON THE DISC, and they're charging us to unlock it. LAME.

Doing what's required of you in the game but it doesn't work. That irritates me to no end.

FPS games in general. I might be having a blast with Bioshock and World at War's Nazi Zombie thing, but... FPS games are overly generic. For the most part they have paper-thin plots, horrible animation, even worse voice-acting, and don't really do anything for me at all. Feh.

Football games that aren't Tecmo Superbowl.

Gamers that think Dead or Alive was a quality fighting game. Sorry, but... no.

The lack of 2D sprite based games really irritates the crap outta me. Just 'cause you're game has millions of shiney polygons doesn't mean it looks better than a 2D sprite based game that has far superior animation. hehhh.

Being juggled to death in Tekken 5. Yuck. Of course, Juggling someone is fun, so I suppose it balances.

Game sites not covering fighting games nearly at all. Game magazines, too.

Not enough horror games. NEED. MOAR.

One thing that is really pissing me off right now is exclusive DLC. I feel so ripped off when I buy a game for one system and the other system gets exclusive DLC. (Fallout 3 I'm looking in your direction)

I think all games should have fully customizable controls. I know different devs like to have their controls a certian way, but gamers do too. It's not a hard thing to put into a game, so just DO it!

Having to create an extra account to play an online game, Like Metal Grear Online.

That's all I can think of for now. I'm still really pissed off about the fallout 3 DLC

DLC- WE can thank MS for this, it is making game developers lazy too, and they think they can get 100$ out of a game now. Fair enough, but we have to not buy this crap. EA has been really bad (I loved Dead Space, and I would buy something if it was good, but 5 bucks for a weapon...no way), but also good (Burnout is always free...so far). I think it has potential to be a neat tool, but the greed and the potential to make a few quick bucks has spoiled it, and I don't see good things for it's future.

FPS - I don't mind a good FPS, but does every game have to be an FPS. Not my favorite games, but the most popular, and thus most produced.

No more good platformers - I loved LBP, it was sweet, I want more of this kind of thing. I love Mario, and the new Mario on the DS was so fun. I am sick of this genre being ignored, and not 3-D platformers, these can be fun (ratchet and clank), but most times they stink.

Jed, don't worry about the Fallout DLC. The money you saved from the 3 packs you can buy a whole new game. Like Res 5, or Killzone 2. Or 3 PSN games.

I didn't read everything before posting, mad... has pretty much said already what I just did. Sorry, but great minds think alike.

Oh..
One more thing... Jerks online. I hate the SOCOM people. I don't know if I'll ever play that game because of some Jerks online. Okay, one day, I was playing, and I am just learning, and his guys is going on and on about his personal life, how he likes to get really drunk and smoke copious amounts of weed on the weekend (no problem ,I like to indulge in extra curricular from time to time) and his GF. I don't care, but I stay quiet. Then he just goes off on me, saying I suck ,and I'm a looser, for no reason. So I tell him to shut up. And then he kills me and I'm voted out of the room (I guess the other people were his clan). These people are stupid.

When publishers restrict early-release demos to people who preorder the game. Demos are supposed to convince people to buy the game IF THEY DON'T KNOW IF THEY WANT TO BUY THE DAMN GAME!

#1. Games that force you to watch a cut scene again after you have died.

#2. Games that dont allow you to save your progress or use a checkpoint system to save.

these arent in order..

1) Being MADE to watch a cut-scene.

2) Compulsory installations. we dont all have unlimited disc space. and the games dont REQUIRE it, and in most cases, it barely makes a difference. sure id love to buy a 250 or 500gb hard drive for my system, but i cant afford it. it should at least be optional.

3) Companies PAYING for exclusivity.
(M$ im pointing at you)
and in some cases 'stealing' console exclusives.
M$ should focus on creating some awesome first-party games, instead of stealing other consoles past glory.

4) Developers releasing incomplete/faulty games and then not supporting them.
*points to Fallout3*

5) The word "Noob".
honestly, drives me up the wall. your playing a game, and if you do something that the other players dont agree with everyone runs around screaming "NOOB...NOOOB..NOOOOOOOB!!!!!!!!"

6) When you get knocked over in a game, and it takes your character 10 minutes to get back up again, and you cant do anything to help it.

Well I can honestly say I do own both systems, but when my 360 died and I had to buy another, then MS lost my steering wheel and didn't bother to even reimburse me or replace it well I was really pissed, and told the jerk on the phone to go f*** himself. Then I got this pamphlet in the mail showing the PS3 and it's different models and I read all the spec's and thought this time I think Sony might have it right. Next thing I got a PS3 and have never been happier.

Okay, including, but not limited to... :

DLC that you must pay for, but is actually included on the disc and is just waiting for your credit card number. That's like being sold a car, and then being charged to access the trunk.

Fanboys who claim they have all 3 systems and somehow that makes what they say valid in any way. If anything it leads me to believe you're not just a douche, but a lying douche. And this goes for all fanboys, including people spouting nonsense in favor of the PS3.

Games with incredibly frustrating puzzles/goals that have totally random solutions with no hints or suggestions.

And on the opposite side, games that are completely straight-forward but have onscreen directions and a narrator spoon-feeding the player the solutions.

Unskippable cutscenes, I always watch the first time through, but many would appreciate the option of jumping right into gameplay or even pausing for a break.

Games that are based off of movies designed for the sole purpose of banking on the coinciding release of said movie. Because 99% of the time they will in fact BLOW!

The stunning lack of games with offline multiplayer options. I bet you could count the number of games that you can play with a person actually sitting next to you on two hands and couple toes. The majority being sports games, ugh. LBP being the shining light :)

"Gamers" who diss fighting games, not knowing that when they were still in diapers, the fighting genre ruled the arcades.

Stupid pre-order bonuses. I know it's just an "extra" thing, but take Killzone 2 for instance. Amazon gives you a couple costumes for home, meh; BestBuy gives you a theme, super meh; Gamestop gives you access to a demo... for a game you just bought... WTF? Demos are supposed to get people interested in buying the game right?

Too few games let you save at anytime, anywhere. Checkpoints are all well and good, but sometimes a game may be interrupted by this thing called "Life"... I for one don't want to have to choose, lol.

But yeah, really this generation my biggest pet peeves have been fanboys, racists, and racist fanboys.

People who complain about CG cut scenes. They must not have been around when they first came out on PSX and Saturn but I love CG cut scenes. They are super shiny and always mark an amazing point in the game. How in the hell else are we supposed to make Animated Music Videos?

Not being able to save a game where you are whenever you are, its always gotta be a checkpoint or at the end of a level. Sometimes real life things pop up and you have to go out and if your miles from a save point you cant save. I dont like leaving my console on unattended as someone can come in and turn it off on you and if it's not turned off right the hd can crash.

Subtitles being so small even on a big tv they are still tiny and impossible to read. I sometimes end up trying to listen to what is being said and thats also an impossibility sometimes too.

The sports games each year being released just with a pile of updates ok sometimes the graphics are slightly improved but not all the time.

As someone said previously new terminology like Noobs and Xbots and fanboys. Were all here to play games. Everyone has an opinion, try to respect it and don't go off on one. I have in the past at people and then I have apologised later on, I am doing a lot better these days lol. I dont like it when ppl say my machines better than your machine. Get both if you can afford it, if not save up like most people can or indeed do.

I admit I like stuff on different machines for different reasons Wii is good for playing with yer mates and having a laugh and a few beers.
PS3 and 360 both good for diff reasons. The exclusives just cause I like Gears doesnt mean you have to or R2 or KZ2 or The Halo games for instance.

-not being able to change my PSN Display name.

-generally easy games that decide to spike the difficulty to near impossible every once and a while (looking at you, Jak II/I)

-demo's being treated as previews. The whole point of a demo is to make me want to go out and buy the game. how can I do that when the only people who can play the game are people who already pre-ordered it??

I cant stand horrible remakes of great games. take sled storm for the ps1 for instance. It logged in about 50% of the playing time on my ps1. They made it for the ps2 and it was just plain dissapointing. I would pay full price for the same game as the original sled storm with updated graphics. Maybe tighten up the engine a little and add some more tracks and online play but other than that change NOTHING. It would sell like crazy!

I also cant stand racing games with HORRIBLE online play. I race motocross at a pro-am level and of course that is my favorite type of game. Maybe it is just because there arent too many of us out there but the online is horrible for MX vs ATV Untamed. I would LOVE it if you could play the same tracks as there are in real life during motocoss/supercross season online. A downloadable track each weekend those seasons would be just amazing.

my biggest pet peeve....games that only include online multiplayer, what about split-screen? part of the reason i got into gaming is because of the fun i had beating my friends and family members in the comfort of my own home, to me split-screen should be a standard for games, especially any that involve shooting or racing yet so many these days ship without it

"Innovation" lol. Some reviewer gave KZ2 a 77 in "innovation", therefore lowering the overall score to 80.

I would like to know what innovation they look forward in a FPS.

BTW I can't stand those reviews that just exist to call the attention. Everybody is loving a game and suddenly a 60-70 review appears just to say that the game is not what is supposed to be.

I love online multiplayer, but suddenly every developer seem to be focusing only in multiplayer. I also love a good SPC before logging in.

My 1 pet peeve is that every game now had DLC that it my opinion aren't always a good deal. Come on 800 points for a game on xbox?!? that's equivalent to 10 bucks!!! What a rip off...it'd be cheaper to buy the original!

Also that some magazines and websites give a game a good rating...and we're supposed to be like well..."Playboy gave this game a 9/10" so THEY can't be wrong...or some other lame ass source gives a horrible game a good rating...no credibility sorry! lol

Oh also people online that gloat cuz their team one because they had a full party. Example last night I played Gears of War 2 for the contest thingy, and well my party only 3 of us vs a full team...sucked horribly and the team had the nerve to start gloating. "Man you guys got your butts KICKED!"....duh!

I got alot of peeves now that I keep ranting on lol. I'll stop at that, but I agree with all of your peeves there Ben :)

I agree with all your points above Ben. I have a few more to add as well.

1. I hate people that bash something just because they don't have one (people who trash PS3 just because they couldn't afford one and as a result got an Xbox 360 instead)

2. I hate people that don't know crap about electronics and try to compare a Wii to a PS3, or a DS to a PSP.

3. I agree with the other comments above. I hate when I can't skip a cut-scene in the middle of a game.

4. I hate when a game system freezes up before I get to the next checkpoint or before it autosaves. I love my PS3 to death but sometimes it just magically freezes up when I have a friend over & when I'm trying to show it off to them (very convenient-NOT!). But for some reason it works perfectly when they are not around. Go figure!

5. I hate when a blockbuster-game-title comes out but turns out to be loaded with glitches (like NFS Prostreet for PS3)

6. I know some people are addicted to violent games like Gran Theft Auto but I personally hate them. Do you know how many crimes have been comitted after playing those kind of games???
