PlayStation Home: Rising Success By The Numbers

We just recently ran a story concerning the apparent lack of PlayStation Home attention, and in response, we've received a slew of new statistics concerning the innovative new service and the PSN.

First of all, it's important to note that the previous article was in no way questioning the appeal or longevity of Home, as we're certain it will be a success (in many ways, it already is). It was merely an observation; it just seems as if the media has lost interest after the constant headlines late last year. Well, the stats really do prove that this new initiative is on the right track and growing quickly: thanks to Home, there were 2.1 million new PSN accounts created in the month of December, which is a monthly increase of 90%. In regards to Home downloads (all that cool stuff you can buy for your avatar and apartment), they're approaching the million mark; it's over 900,000 already. Downloads across the PSN and Home are up 20% in the past three months and overall, "the growing network of more than 17 million worldwide members offers a tremendous selection of content to choose from having already downloaded more than 330 million pieces of content in a little more than a two-year period." Home is most certainly a driving force behind the last few successful months, so we won't deny that.

And here's the final, and perhaps the most important stat: there are approximately 3.4 million PlayStation Home users, and Sony is reporting a 25% increase in the past two weeks (statistic as of mid-January). So, while Home may not be grabbing all the headlines these days - those are reserved for Killzone 2 - it's still doing quite well. Kudos on the numbers, we say.

well if they know they got all these people on HOME... then maybe they should make content for the users.

Man, I haven't gotten on Home in weeks.

In other news, I finally bought Hot Shots. Just got up to G2 rank in online this weekend. Also, very upset that Federer lost to Nadal in Oz this weekend... =(

Every time those two guys play, it's epic. Just awesome.

And Hot Shots rules. Any time someone wants to try to challenge me, feel free. ;)

ALRIGHT!!! Tennis fans in here yea!!!! But yea I was extremely upset that Federer lost to Nadal. I always root for RF - but I guess I'll just have to do that at Wimbledon (not like I'm going to be there but still haha). At least Federer won US Open last year!!! It seemed like last year he was going downhill but he finished it off strong at the US.

Oh well, sorry that was going a bit off topic but for Home - I just sort of wonder why it's being treated like a game actually. It's just really a kind of an online social community isn't it. I mean from video reviews that's what I get. Unfortunately I don't have a PS3 yet - but when I get one I'll be all over this...to socialize.

You guys must not live in the States. Nobody but me cares about tennis here.

@Nighthawk: it was close! :)

@Shadowpal: I love how us Federer fans just subconsciously forget about the French Open and automatically start looking forward to grass court season after Oz. *grins*
Don't forget, Federer is an incredible clay court player in his own right. All it will take is for Nadal to have just one bad day, and Federer can sieze the French.

....uh yeah, and Playstation Home needs more... stuff...

Actually, Ben, I'd love to play Hot Shots online with you... but... I don't have your PSN. Would be cool if we could get a PSX Extreme game night going, one night a week or something.

EDIT: Here, just have mine... PSN ID: Arvis_Jaggamar.

"thanks to Home, there were 2.1 million new PSN accounts created in the month of December"

Which also happens to be the same month everyone got PS3's for Christmas. You can't just claim that the increase was because of Home. Yes it's unique and nothing like we've seen before, but I don't turn on my PS3 and think "Oh I better go on Home and do... Em what exactly?"

It'll get better in time. It's only in the Beta stage. As long as they keep adding in plenty of new features and patches it'll get bigger and bigger.

Considering that holiday sales for the PS3 basically sucked, and December hardware sales weren't much higher than any other month, what you're saying isn't true at ALL.

give me the ability to stream from my ps3 hdd video/music in my HOME apartment & let my friends download video/music to theirs & viceversa.
i know Sony doesn't want home to become a porn hub or blackmarket for piracy, but if they aren't gonna release the feature then they should have kept their mouths shut on the subject.
they cant dangle the tasty carrot of video/music sharing in front of me and take it away, thats metal abuse that could manifest itself physically, when i find out where the person in charge of home LIVES & i call over with a shotgun and..........
if the feature is released & they sort out game launching,Xbox live better watch its back.

Umm, I'll be going back to home when the big developers open up spaces for games I like. Isn't that going to be the big draw anyhow?

Say what you want about it, but when the devs/publishers see that their space in Home is getting a few million virtual visitors the Sony love will come Home :)

Home is lackluster still. It needs something..anything to keep my atention other than a game of chess..which is alot more fun when you use a real chess board.

All Sony needs to do is advertise Home and tell about all the stuff you can do and will be able to do. After that, the sales should increase. Especially if they say on the commercial that Home is only on Playstation 3.
