Sony: What $50 Gets You On The PSN

Thus far in 2009, we've noticed two distinct changes: 1. the sluggish economy has caused some gamers to cut back, and 2. Sony is finally starting to roll out major marketing campaigns for both hardware and software. You all know about the Killzone 2 advertisement blitz, and it appears they're keeping everyone in the loop regarding the PlayStation Network as well.

The fact that the PSN continues to be free is undoubtedly serving Sony well in this recession, and they just wanted to let you know what you could nab on the Store for only $50. Now, you could either go down to the store and spend that much (plus $10 more) on 1 brand new game, or you could purchase a Xbox Live Gold subscription, or you could head onto the PSN and download a whole bunch of cool stuff. In the release, Sony provided two quick examples of what $50 in your wallet can get you:

  • PAIN ($9.99)
  • Elefunk ($4.99)
  • Guitar Hero Classic Rock Track ($6.25)
  • LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid - Level Kit ($5.99)
  • Episode of Afro Samurai | Season 1 ($1.99)
  • The Dark Knight Movie ($14.99)
  • Samurai Sword Rack, Diesel Tiamallo Blue Hooded Top, Ligne Roset
  • Alster Chair for PlayStation Home ($4.47)

OR

  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix ($14.99)
  • Burnout Paradise (Full Retail Game) ($19.99)
  • The Hoff Character for PAIN ($1.99)
  • LittleBigPlanet Ryu of Street Fighter II ($1.99)
  • Robot Trooper and Basketball Boots for PlayStation Home ($.98)
  • Savage Moon ($9.99)

Obviously, these are merely examples; the point is that you can make $50 go a long way on the PSN. With 8.8 million registered users in North America already, Sony reminds you that "the PlayStation Network supports free and community-centric online gameplay, communications tools, web browsing, commerce and PSP and PS3 connectivity." Yep, the operative word is, of course, "free."

Bang for the Buck, not nickel and dimes.

I have spent more than 50 on the PSN in the past 2 years, so they are preaching to the choir in my case, but it is a nice comparison to what 50 bucks gets you on the competitors network... after spending to get access to it, of course.

And you know what's sad: they probably should have sold at 60, because they probably would've seen more of a profit, seeing how it only appealed to a relatively small interest group who would've paid either way. And that's the real reason why I hate what M$ has done to the market. "Halo" has monopolised everything. Before, in the ps2 era, things were beginning to get creative. And yeah, these days, LBP, if we're not talking about sales, is hot, and nothing like it before, but the industry is starting to see that it isn't creativity that's rewarded...It's marketing dollar. The vgame market is most likely larger than ever before, and has a become market that is on par with the music and film industries, but something lame happens when things in general get too mainstream. I just hope "mainstream" doesn't take over everything.

Earlier today, my friend who owns an xbox said to me that xbox has better games, and Sony has much better advertising. He also said that LBP sold loads due to good marketing but it's the only game the PS3 has. Just hought i'd bring that up cos i found it funny

What your friend said is the exact opposite of the truth...ps3 has much better exclusives past, present, and future, microsoft had much better and more involved advertising thanks to their financial freedom...and LBP sold over 2 million copies in 4 months DESPITE almost no media attention (frankly, LBP would sell 100M copies with decent, consistent advertising)

If you are still on the fence about LBP, just think of it like this...imagine being "on the fence" whether to get Super Mario World back in the early 90s...its that much of a no brainer 10x

Neither have I but then again I have only heard about the crap load of Euro's or pounds maybe that they have spent on the marketing and nothing about them spending any USD so that could be the reason.

I just dont like paying for downloads, i just dont feel like i get enough, when i get the case and disc it just feels complete, i could have bought Blood Curse Siren on the PS Store, but i just didnt like the idea, once it was released on disc i got it a month later, and very glad it did to me its probaly been the most engaging title this gen!!! to my surprise.

The competitor charges $50-$96 a year (depending how you pay)...and in addition to that, they have "PS Home-like" micro-transactions for everything even things like wallpaper...

To get the amount of content on those lists above for the competitor's system, it goes well above $100+ (per year)

i would hate to add up the cost in rockband songs that i have purchased, but i thought it was well worth it. along with a couple small games and wipeout, i paid my part on it, but i do think its nice that you can play for free or just view whats offered without paying a penny. i have enjoyed the movie previews and extra jazz so no compliants here. i think sony has done a good job with it since you start free and then your browsing and you keep seeing the good pruducts your interested AND they keep dropping prices, (like burnout) then finally one lonely afternoon you just say i must have it! i need burnout...

i just finished reading the official playstation magazine... at the very back where they awsner peoples questions i almost got offended because the PSN cards are taking forever to come to canada, they said that they will eventually come to canada but they dont know when, i have a feeling it wont be for a while, yet again canadians are left out in the dust...:(

No, not anymore. The only main differences I noticed in the states was the eat-in charge at McDonalds, the people who call toques hats, and the lack of extreme levels of vehicle corroding road salt.

Sad seems Sony realizes they have lost this generation and can only attack other cosoles saying wii is not competition just because it's outselling PS3 a lot. Xbox live has inside xbox which is free and also has far superior online play. PSN has quore which it charges you $3 bucks for one episode.
And here's something what $200 you saved on a 360 instead of PS3 will get you
1. a one year subscription for xbox live $49.99
2. Mass Effect $19.99
3. Halo 3 $59.99
4. Gears 2 $59.99

There's also Pulse, which is free. Qore is $21 for the 8 episodes (#7 was free), that is still $29 less than Live service, it is also optional. How do you define "far superior"? They both have 17 million users, how can the Live service be that "far superior"? Yes, the Wii(45M) is destroying the PS3(21.3M) and 360(28M) in sales. It also has a much larger target audience (anyone who can hold a wiimote).
Moving on, let's compare what $190 (since you spent that much) can get you on a PS3.
Metal Gear Solid IV: $50
PixelJunk Monsters: $10
Little Big Planet: $60
echocrome: $10
Killzone 2: $60

If wanted to get free Qore episodes, just get a subscription to PSM, it's $18 for a year and has a voucher for the current episode of Qore in every issue.

Also Xbox live has party chat, netflix (which is not possible on the PS3), and way more content. Also FFXIII will probably get a lot more sales on 360 so then Square will make versus muliplat.

Actually, xbox live has a 350mb download limit. So I wouldn't compare that content to the kind of content available on the PSN (full games). Also, PS3 has downloadable HD movies for purchase and rent. But yeah, live's got full chat which is pretty cool, but definitely not worth the cost of entry.

OK Spartan 117, say you're 'saving' $200 on purchasing the Arcade, right? Then I'm figuring you're not planning on using a Hard Drive or connecting wirelessly, right? But if you are (which I would hope so...playing without a hard drive is a drag), well then you're spending $100 for the wireless adapter, and another $100 just for the 60GB Hard Drive....which really makes the price about the same, which brings us back to Ben's topic of saving 50-60 bucks from having a free online experience or not buying one game.

Secondly...the PS3 has party video chat, and you have to already be subscribed to Netflix (another pay subscription) to use it on the Xbox. I'll stick to my Blockbuster any day over Netflix.

WipeOut is definitely my fav dl game, but I also enjoy HVB, Siren, Crash Commando, PJ Eden and Monsters, and PAIN. Let's just say I've sunk a good amount of cash into the store..

Edit: I knew I forgot one! Everyday Shooter!

Although it's one of the first for the PSN, I still love to play it from time to time.
