RE5 Bonus Disc: High-Def Blu-Ray On PS3, Standard DVD On 360

Perhaps you own both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and are on the fence concerning which version of Resident Evil 5 you will purchase. Capcom has already stated that both versions should be almost identical visual-wise, so it may come down to your controller preference (as it often does these days). On the other hand, if you're springing for the Collectors Edition, it may be a very simple choice...

Thanks to a reader who wanted an answer to this question, we now have a clarification. You probably already know that a special Bonus disc will be included in the RE5 Collectors Edition, and PS3 owners probably wanted to assume it would be on Blu-Ray. Xbox 360 owners didn't want to entertain the possibility, but Capcom's Christian Svensson confirmed it. As you can see in this response, PS3 fans are gonna be happy:

"Here is the answer:

On 360 - it is a bonus DVD - standard DVD resolution

On PS3 - it is a bonus Blu-Ray Disc - yes, the content is HD on this disc."

Yep, that bonus disc will display in brilliant 1080p Blu-Ray high-def for the PS3 version of Resident Evil 5, while the 360 version's bonus DVD will be limited to the standard 480p definition. Initially, Blu-Ray wasn't a huge selling point for the PS3, but since then, HD-DVD has capsized, developers are beginning to take advantage, and extra bonuses like these are starting to surface. For the hardcore RE fans, you're going to want the PS3 version of the Collectors; plain and simple.

Yes cant wait I'm actually looking forward to this game more than killzone 2, and i would kill my mother for killzone 2 right now, so i guess i would kill my mother and not care afterwards for R5 now

Having the bonus disc on Blu-ray is a great plus, but had anyone been able to legitimately compare both games graphically? I say this because a trolling argument can be made that the 360 was made for video games while the PS3 was made for multi-media. Catch my drift here? Just wanted to know what everyone thought.

Once developers stop porting games to the PS3, the quality we are going to see is going to be far and above anything ever seen on the competition.

Up until now, we have only seen glimpses of it...next 3 years or so looks extremely promising.

docpain, I fully agree with you. But I just wish that the PS3 being the lead platform was already more common. Games like X-blade is graphically inferior on the PS3 version. But games like Street Fighter IV are practically the same on both consoles. With SFIV mentioned, you'd hope they would make sure both versions of RE5 at least identical. I saw a screen comparison shot of both versions posted at vgchartz dot com. The PS3 version had slightly toned down textures while some users claimed that having both demos, both versions looked identical. After seeing games such as Uncharted , Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, and MGS4, I have no doubt that the PS3 is the more graphical machine. I just which more 3rd party developers would step up to the plate to deliver. It would help set anti-PS3 propaganda aside.

Don't put too much stock in those comparison shots, they are typically different because they have been tampered with or aren't being displayed properly in the captures due to a number of things.

Yeah unfortunately when you port something, it can only look identical AT BEST (if the port to PS3 goes smoothly)...if they face technical issues, glitches come about and they have to modify stuff...the end result becomes a somewhat watered down PS3 version...

This porting system caused the blu-ray to be mostly ignored by the developers (until recently) because the game is optimized for the 360 and the 8gb (or so) would just be mirrored on the blu-ray (40GB of space down the drain). I blame the 360 for Rockstar making GTA4 not as good as it should have been.

That causes all multi-platforms to be equal or better on Bill Gate's machine...plenty of uninformed people took that and ran away with it thinking the PS3 is insanely inferior...Those people will have a hard time accepting what's about to happen the next 3 years.

The PS3 has (statistically) better (in quality) and more (in shear numbers) games last year...OVERALL!!!

I think Ben did the math for the PS3 haters a couple of months back...but if u count the games and there cumulative scores and average them...PS3 games are like .8-1.3 better.

Just look at the PS3 exclusives released in the past year, and then compare it to the XBox exclusives for the past year. U will find (surprising to some) MORE quality games on the Playstation's side.

Guess 15 years of gaming experience tops Xbox's 8 years after all. Who knew?

Well it was Sony's fault that they let Rockstar slip away from them. Plus Sony coming into this generation a year late basically forced them to develop GTA on the 360 first. Imagine how many consoles Sony would have sold if they bought Rockstar?

I saw a youtube clip comparing the two side by side. They looked so similar that I could barely tell a difference. And even when I could tell a difference, it was basically just different lighting. It WAS youtube though so take it with a grain of salt.

Funny thing with Monster Hunter 3 Tri, Capcom developed a PS3 like controller for the Wii. If they were not going to use Wii waggle and wiggle, why put it on that system at all and not on the PS3?

Tenchu 4 is another game that should've been on the PS3.

As for Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, I want a PS2 port so I can import it. I really don't want to import a Wii just for one game. I'll have to import more to justify the purchase.

It's bad enough I'm thinking about importing a 360 arcade for all those shmups not making it to the PS3 (or the PS2) these days.

The whole Japanese gaming world has gone topsy turvy I tell you!

I have invited my critical xbot buddies over for DVD to BD comparisons, since they mostly trash BD without having actually seen DVD upscaling-BD comparisons, due to their Xbot natures.

Play DVD in standalone player
Play same DVD in PS3
Play BD version of same movie in PS3

I used Harry Potter 5 as the showcase, as It is the only movie I (my wife, honest) own in both formats.

33% of my Xbot buddies(4 of 12) have purchased PS3s after this comparison. Displays of GT5p, Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted helped, of course.

The rest admitted seeing something nice, but fell back on the old blissfully ignorant xbot mantras of "no games" and "shitty ports" to defend their anti-ps3, and thus, anti-BD viewpoints. The fact that a couple of them actually did go out and instead buy BD players for about the same price as a PS3, blows my mind. Normal, rational people go bugshit nutty when it comes to their little pockets of fanboisims.

I think Sony owes me some money (or do I owe them more? are PS3s breaking profit yet?) for my avon/tupperware/sextoy party approach to turning my xbots into true next gen gamers.

Every PS3 game is on blu-ray, But they are not always at 1080.

It doesnt seem like that big of a deal to me. Dont get me wrong, I love BDs, but It's just a bonus disc. I usually dont even bother watching those.

OffTopic: Only way to get rich is to save your money and not buy so many games... pick one or two... squirrel the rest away... no matter how much we want to believe it, money doesn't grow on trees... it has to be made and saved; and a 1/3rd spent...

Its been my motto through life.... it's just wonderful to watch money grow, but at the same time buy the odd Ps3 game here and there and enjoy life without stress :)

On Topic: I won't purchase Resident Evil 5 as I am going to by Killzone 2... this will last me for a few months until Dirt II (or Unchartered II); next year will be GoW III... that is it for me... very choosy about what I purchase now! Saying this, I was impressed with the recent re-run of the Pacific Rift demo... it really is very good... rendering engine looks much better... shadowing problem is almost fixed... camera and rag doll physics are much more realistic... better all around... I wish I had never bought the 1st one now!

Are you sure the 360 isn't HD? Before you think i support 360, i don't, i don't even own one. But i remember going into sony style and the salesman was saying the 360 is currently better, i said its not even high def and he said the games are high def, it doesn't have to be on bluray to be high def. thats why the 360 elite had hdmi out. I also remember thinking, this guy works for sony and he's promoting the 360?

Well, being "HD" or not, doesn't have anything to do with the media, per se. It's just a matter of outputting the desired resolution on the screen. So, I can't agree with your argument that X360 is "not HD, because DVD is not HD". I say anything that can output pictures at a resolution of 720p or higher (highest currently being 1920x1080 progressive), is considered HD.
And since both DVD and X360 can do that, I would say both are capable of HD.
However, it's just that DVD does not have enough storage space to hold an entire movie in an HD resolution. Thus, Blu-ray is required.

[Note: Not a fanboy argument, I'm just trying to make things clear]

Is there any info of what is ON the disc? Instead of assuming it's an RE6 preview trailer or something amazing (unlikely) then it's not really a big deal. Controller preference still stands as the strongest factor.

Well i was rantin' in the forums sayin' how dualshock 3 has the edge with this game but my mind's turned states.I'll be buyin' this on 360,obviously not the collector's edition but the LT & RT feel good shootin' with.

The random command prompts on screen are easily performed on 360 due to those high colored red,blue,green & yellow buttons,u could perform those uppercuts n assists without lookin' at the button on screen but by the color,this is handy when under pressure.

LISTEN!.....the ps3 buttons appear black with a little pink for box,green for triangle,blue for x...etc....whiles the 360 appears FULL COLORED red for B,green for A,blue for X.The 360 buttons catches the eye quicker.

All am sayin' is, the brightly colored 360 buttons on the screen have an advantage in those cases where one button performs a quick action......u still don't get it?????

Still RE5 will be played best on both platforms so don't let my comment have an effect on your purchase.

BTW i stopped hatin' on the 360 a long time ago.I don't MARRY any console.Some of you should stop being fanboys in disguise!

Wow dude, you need to calm down. No one was attacking you. All I was implying is that it's not like the buttons change in function. Melee is always the same button, picking up something is always the same button, etc. You should be able to not look at the controller and still be just fine without button indicators on the screen as well. I wasn't trying to come off as a PS3 fanboy who turned on you just because you are getting the 360 version. It's totally your choice and I think that at least the fact that you like the triggers better on the 360 controller is a very valid argument. Also, I would totally see your point about buttons on screen if there were action button pressing sequences in this game like RE 4 and GOW. Does anyone know if that is going to be included?

Yea I have the demo www. And there are no action sequences in it. I meant during cutscenes like how RE 4 had them. Where you have to push say, R2+L2 and then square+circle. I didn't mean "press circle to roundhouse". Pressing circle to melee never changes. The action sequences I'm thinking of do change. And I do respect that you try to be as unbiased as possible. Just understand that I am too and not a ranting raving fanboy.

Can't just wait for this game!!!:) I hope Capcom will work on the ps3 framerate in final release because I played the demo on both x360 and ps3 and on ps3 it cripples sometimes when there's lot of enemies on screen (which will happen often I suppose)...

funny, if u buy the 360 version of the game, you get a bonus dvd, which u probably can also play on ur ps3, if u want, WITH UPSCALING
if u get the ps3 version, u'll get a hd bluray discwhich u cant play on ur x360:P

love my ps3:-)

Makes total sense. Those who don't have a 360 don't hafta choose 'tween 360 or PS3 version. or got no choice. Whichever way one wants to look at it.

TBH, as a veteran of collectors editions(to my ETERNAL shame)old and new I can safely say this will influence hardly anyone who was unsure of which to get. Firstly, and most importantly, the "bonus" disc is always cack anyway and you mainly pay for the lovely double boxes. Secondly as a RE release I'm sure the bonus stuff will be dross. Thirdly you have to be a big RE fan to want this and there aren't that many THAT bothered to buy anything but the bog standard game. And in the end if you have the choice you'll usually go with the console whose controller suits you best(personally I detest the cluky lefty hating 360 piece of crap but as a lefty with tiny artistic hands built for precision I would wouldn't I? Though my idiotic best mate is even getting SF4 on 360 and that's virtually unplayable with the dualshock let alone with the worst d-pad in the history of the world-honestly if you're getting it for 360 invest in an arcade stick)as a couple here have alrady said.
Yes, it's nice to have higher def but , really, how many peoples minds is this gonna change? About ten?

What's the big deal? Is there really anything on the bonus disc worthy of high definition?

You know what? I really don't care about collector's editions or bonus discs or little figurines. The bonus features could come on a beta tape for all I care.

Am I missing the boat on this whole collector's edition for games thing? Has there ever been anything that makes it worth spending another $20-$30 for the same game? When I finally got around to buying MGS4 I got it from Gamestop. The collector's edition was the same price as the regular version. Granted that only came with an extra blu-ray disc.

Oh well. If you like the extra stuff go ahead and stimulate the economy. It's just not my gig.

Just to clarify on the whole HD thing, there is indeed a difference between manufacturing an HD picture on the 360 with HD Component cables (which is what I do), and using a true-blue HDMI input with Blu-Ray.

And while most can't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p (it's basically impossible on smaller screens), there IS a perceptible difference between 720p and 1080p.

Oh yes, there is a HUGE difference!!! My wife was foolin with the settings on the ps3 and I couldn't figure why my tv felt different. She had put 1080i as the max output for the ps3.

Its all good now, we are a spoiled bunch, those of us with 1080p hdtvs and a ps3...

I cancelled my RE5 reservation I'm not into RE and I didn't like the demo, I still have to pick up SFIV and KZ2 so I can't afford RE anyway, hope anyone thats getting the game enjoy it

My avatar is cute and thats why i chose it, i do know alot about the PS3 ( got it on launch)i know all games are on Blueray but not all are HD and thats what i was getting at. But Ben nicely clarified it for me, thanks BEN!.

Yeah, while very few games play in full 1080p, pretty much anything played on an HDTV with component cables of some sort is technically HD. I just can't wait until all games are in 1080p. Oh what a sight to behold.

......its just a bonus disc, this articles just trying to kick up a fanboy war, Fallout 3 had the same deal with its special edition the PS3 bonus disc was blu-ray while the 360 was dvd, why no comment then?.......
