Mandatory Trophy Rule For PS3 Software Clarified
Towards the end of last year, it was reported that all future PlayStation 3 titles (in 2009 and beyond) must support Trophies. This came as good news to many, especially after a year where Trophy support was spotty at best (they had only freshly introduced the feature, remember). However, some games in 2009 clearly don't boast Trophies, so...what's the deal?
Well, PSU contacted SCE to get an answer on this matter. Thing is, a game has to have been "submitted for certification after January 1, 2009" to fall under this new mandatory Trophy rule. One game used as an example, the recently released and unfortunately mediocre Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, does not have Trophy support. But it was submitted to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) way back in June 2008, so they didn't need to include Trophies. So for a little while longer, you may want to check the certification date with the ESRB or BBFC before picking up a game with the supposed added bonus of "mandatory Trophy support." Obviously, once we get to the point where almost no games would've been submitted before January 1 of this year, this will become an irrelevant issue. For the time being, though, this is a clarification that many gamers have been looking for; we've seen plenty of questions like, "hey, I thought all PS3 games were supposed to have Trophies now!" Technically, yes, that's true. Just read the fine print.
We're still not sure how important Trophies (and Achievements on the Xbox 360) are to most gamers, but we imagine they act as nice little additions to the experience. We doubt many are breaking their fingers trying to get every last Trophy/Achievement for every game they play...or maybe plenty are, who knows?

I usually don't even come close to getting all of them though, and I don't really try, but it's cool beating my friends in anything I can.

It's just being lazy, plain and simple. If a game like Flower (awesome by the way) can have 2 dozen trophy's, then games like skate or COD4:MW shouldn't be an issue.
At least some companies have stepped up and release a patch like Fallout 3 and GTA4, but it really should be across the board.
While we're on the subject, developers should be allowing custom soundtracks as well for all games. I mean "come on!"

Even if it were technically easy to insert the new code into the existing code (which in most cases would not be true--Uncharted was built with trophies in mind), the dev would still have to re-test the entire game to make sure the trophy code didn't break anything and re-sumbit it to Sony.

I would've stopped with GTA IV a long time ago if it didn't get the easy bronze and Gold trophies.
The extra time I got after that game for Trophies is 40 hrs (story).
Now Fly The Co-op and Wanted (OMFGGGG who has the time to get to Lv 10 WTFBBQ?) are going to destroy me.
=D
And they're good for people to show off skill on hard achievements (e.g. COD5 Sum of All Zeros).

So I for one will not buy a game released in 2009 that does not have trophy support. And I do believe I'm not alone in that.

I got some friends into Uncharted, and now they're playing it too, so I check their trophies to see their progress, and give them tips on how to obtain certain trophies they are missing.
Also, my friend was able to prove to me that he finished Resistance 2 with the "OMGWTFBBQ" trophy. LOL!

I also have to say that it adds to the longevity of a game. I almost feel like I go back and get trophies from good games just to prove to everyone how much I enjoyed these games. I only need one more trophy for Dead Space until platinum. (Valkyria Chronicles should have trophy support. :()

I seriously would like them to not make reaching the highest multiplayer Lvl mandatory for a Platinum. I mean they can see your rank, great, you've proved it, you don't really need to waste all that time to get the LAST darn Trophy for the Plat'.
It should be about how much skill you have, not how much time you have on your hands to keep playing Team Deathmatch (for example).
I 'think' many people will feel this way.

Multiplayer should be an afterthought, not a requirement. Period. And to base half a games trophies on multiplayer aspects.. is just moronic.

One of my PSN friends wrote an article on The Easiest Playstation 3 Trophy Games ( http://www.squidoo.com/easiest-ps3-trophy-games ) and by all accounts he is getting good traffic to it with very little advertising, which proves that ppl are looking for trophy games.
I also think that last year when trophy games were scarce if companies had added trophy support they would have significantly increased their sales. I even think ppl would have bought rubbish games like Beowulf and The Golden Compass IF they had had trophies. But now because of the amount of trophy games that would no longer work.
