Mandatory Trophy Rule For PS3 Software Clarified

Towards the end of last year, it was reported that all future PlayStation 3 titles (in 2009 and beyond) must support Trophies. This came as good news to many, especially after a year where Trophy support was spotty at best (they had only freshly introduced the feature, remember). However, some games in 2009 clearly don't boast Trophies, so...what's the deal?

Well, PSU contacted SCE to get an answer on this matter. Thing is, a game has to have been "submitted for certification after January 1, 2009" to fall under this new mandatory Trophy rule. One game used as an example, the recently released and unfortunately mediocre Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, does not have Trophy support. But it was submitted to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) way back in June 2008, so they didn't need to include Trophies. So for a little while longer, you may want to check the certification date with the ESRB or BBFC before picking up a game with the supposed added bonus of "mandatory Trophy support." Obviously, once we get to the point where almost no games would've been submitted before January 1 of this year, this will become an irrelevant issue. For the time being, though, this is a clarification that many gamers have been looking for; we've seen plenty of questions like, "hey, I thought all PS3 games were supposed to have Trophies now!" Technically, yes, that's true. Just read the fine print.

We're still not sure how important Trophies (and Achievements on the Xbox 360) are to most gamers, but we imagine they act as nice little additions to the experience. We doubt many are breaking their fingers trying to get every last Trophy/Achievement for every game they play...or maybe plenty are, who knows?

How important are trophies to most gamers?
What ought to be done is a big website has to have a poll. Make it big news too, get as many gamers to vote so we know. That'd be cool, I have wondered this same thing for a long time.

Agreed with jaybiv I would not base my purchase on trophy support. While they are cool and all they do not make or break a game by any means. I mean would anyone honestly buy Shellshock 2 if it had trophy support? I have read some of the reviews for this game and I honestly wouldn't spend the money to crap on the game but I will wait and see if a PSXE review comes out and makes me change my mind. I had such hope for a new Viet Nam game too :(

You know, when they announced this whole trophy thing I couldn't have cared less. Much to my surprise though, I've turned into a bit of a trophy whore.
I don't decide what games to play based on whether they have trophies, but it will certainly keep me playing the game longer.

No way, 'wanted' just takes time. A LOT of time. The bowling one takes either skill or luck, both of which I do not possess. It was hard enough for me to beat the high score in Qubed!

@Jasper - I'm the same way, well not really a whore for them. But I also didn't care for them up until my friends started competing with me. I still don't care, but I'm so competitive that I want to have more trophies than them.

I usually don't even come close to getting all of them though, and I don't really try, but it's cool beating my friends in anything I can.

Trophies still serve no purpose for me. It's nice to see one pop up on screen for accomplishing whatever task was completed, but I never browse through the trophy list to see all of them and usally delete the trophy file off my hard drive later. If there was more incentive to collect them THEN I might pay more attention to them. But until then they are just an added perk.

What really bugs me is when a multi-platform game is released with achievements for the 360, but no trophy's for us PS3'ers. How friggin hard could it be to take the list of achievements and implement them into our games.

It's just being lazy, plain and simple. If a game like Flower (awesome by the way) can have 2 dozen trophy's, then games like skate or COD4:MW shouldn't be an issue.

At least some companies have stepped up and release a patch like Fallout 3 and GTA4, but it really should be across the board.

While we're on the subject, developers should be allowing custom soundtracks as well for all games. I mean "come on!"

lol

What I Use Trophies/Achievements For:

I like to see what trophies people on my friends list have so I can not only see what games they play, but what games they are really into. This way if I ever get stuck in a game, feel like going online, or whatever I know who to contact.

No, they really can't.

Even if it were technically easy to insert the new code into the existing code (which in most cases would not be true--Uncharted was built with trophies in mind), the dev would still have to re-test the entire game to make sure the trophy code didn't break anything and re-sumbit it to Sony.

I would've stopped with GTA IV a long time ago if it didn't get the easy bronze and Gold trophies.

The extra time I got after that game for Trophies is 40 hrs (story).
Now Fly The Co-op and Wanted (OMFGGGG who has the time to get to Lv 10 WTFBBQ?) are going to destroy me.

=D

And they're good for people to show off skill on hard achievements (e.g. COD5 Sum of All Zeros).

I'm surprised at the trophy hate in a lot of comments. What's the matter? You're not paying for trophy support. Like 'em or hate 'em, they're part of the next gen experience. It gives you that little something extra for having put in the effort on a game. Many refer to the re-playability which is true, and I find it also helps you experience more of the game. I would have played every miscellaneous quest in Fallout 3 regardless, but giving me a trophy for doing them is a treat. One could plow through PoP without ever doing the 14 hit combo, but then you'd miss out on the awesome finishing animation.

So I for one will not buy a game released in 2009 that does not have trophy support. And I do believe I'm not alone in that.

Well if you have finished off a game at 100%, and go around boasting, there is a chance that some people won't believe you without any proof. Trophies basically act as a proof that you have indeed finished the game off.

Actually, I never really cared about them until I started playing Uncharted. I ended up playing through Uncharted to collect *all* the trophies.
I got some friends into Uncharted, and now they're playing it too, so I check their trophies to see their progress, and give them tips on how to obtain certain trophies they are missing.

Also, my friend was able to prove to me that he finished Resistance 2 with the "OMGWTFBBQ" trophy. LOL!

I believe the beauty of trophies lie in what they can reveal about a game. When a trophy is so ridiculous to obtain that "your fingers fall off" I could care less. When a trophy points me into a direction that shows what a game has to offer (that I may or may not have known before), or reveal some hidden meanings found in a game then I believe the trophy system has done it's job. I felt Bioshock did a good job of the trophies. "Irony" was an awesome trophy to get because I had no idea I would get a trophy for doing what I did. ;)

I also have to say that it adds to the longevity of a game. I almost feel like I go back and get trophies from good games just to prove to everyone how much I enjoyed these games. I only need one more trophy for Dead Space until platinum. (Valkyria Chronicles should have trophy support. :()

Another thing about Trophies.

I seriously would like them to not make reaching the highest multiplayer Lvl mandatory for a Platinum. I mean they can see your rank, great, you've proved it, you don't really need to waste all that time to get the LAST darn Trophy for the Plat'.

It should be about how much skill you have, not how much time you have on your hands to keep playing Team Deathmatch (for example).

I 'think' many people will feel this way.

Trophies for any multiplayer type game format just sucks in general.. Because of 2 reasons.. 1> Multiplayer games are just not that fun (with an exception for the epic ones like FFXI and R2) and 2> After the game has been out awhile, people stop playing those games.. this really sucks if you had to save your money to buy a game or just waited to get it. (PSN im lookin at you.. e.g. Geon)
Multiplayer should be an afterthought, not a requirement. Period. And to base half a games trophies on multiplayer aspects.. is just moronic.

Personally I don't see why all games don't have trophies in (or haven't been patched) as games without trophies will loose sales. I wouldn't buy a game just because it has trophies, but I won't buy a game if it doesn't have trophies. If companies can't be bothered to put trophies in games then I can't be bothered to buy them games. I have got plenty of trophy games to play at the moment (I stocked up in the Christmas sales) and a game would have to be bloody good for me to buy it if it didn't have trophies. I have missed playing some good games because of no trophy support but you can't play every game (unless u are sad and have no life) so I am not really missing out on anything. Games with trophies give more replay value than ones without - well except for Burnout Paradise those trophies were a joke made to exploit the trophy system to sell more units.

One of my PSN friends wrote an article on The Easiest Playstation 3 Trophy Games ( http://www.squidoo.com/easiest-ps3-trophy-games ) and by all accounts he is getting good traffic to it with very little advertising, which proves that ppl are looking for trophy games.

I also think that last year when trophy games were scarce if companies had added trophy support they would have significantly increased their sales. I even think ppl would have bought rubbish games like Beowulf and The Golden Compass IF they had had trophies. But now because of the amount of trophy games that would no longer work.
