Ratner Shelves God Of War Movie

Okay, everyone say it once, all in rhythm: "eh, you would've just mucked it up, anyway."

In October 2008, film director Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour, "X-Men 3") revealed that one of his new projects is a movie adaptation of the critically acclaimed God of War series. However, fans weren't that enthralled with the announcement, and although that may have nothing to do with this, Production Weekly reports that Ratner has shelved the idea. The simple quote is- "Over at Universal it looks like Brett Ratner has shelved 'God Of War,' and is moving forward on 'Trump Heist' with Eddie Murphy and Chris Tucker." Yeah, whatever. Keep pumping out the mediocrity, Hollywood; we'll just keep advancing and making superior entertainment products over here, if that's all right with you. That way, when your box office profit takes another dive and you fall even further behind our industry (that's what you get for continually insulting the intelligence of the movie-viewing public), you can just blame us for taking away all the film viewers. We don't mind. At the very least, you won't go and screw up one of our most beloved franchises.

We understand a "Metal Gear Solid" movie is also in the works, but with Hideo Kojima sitting in a major seat of influence during the production, we'd like to think it'll be excellent. A "God of War" movie? Nah, we'd rather you didn't try it.

300 was a propaganda film, shamelessly fraught with stereotypes, and based on antihuman nationalistic hubris and racism. Oh yeah, and Butler's performance was just as laughably unconvincing. The movie was for idiots. I'm sure it made a lot of money.

This is wonderful. I don't care who the director is, a God of War movie would not work. It would be especially bad with a horrible director like this though. Good news.

This video game adaptation would've been bad and everyone knows it.

#$%@ hollywood ran out of ideas a long time ago. There hasn't been one movie I've went to go see for me since The Dark Knight(or was it W?). In the meantime I have played plenty of video games.

Never seen the dark knight. I bought it on blu-ray(with hancock) back in November and I still haven't opened neither.

My feeling is if they have to do a movie about it, make it an anime. There's no way they could do a live action film close enough. The DBZ and Street Fighter movies are two others that look horrible.

No shite, the first had promise, just give creative control to Todd MacFarlane and you got a winner. AL was a great anti hero, the HBO anime was tight.

amen to that! I've been wishing for spawn 2 movie ever since i was a kid! It would've been awesome if they would've made it. i bet it would still be awesome. spawn was by far my favorite hero and none of my friends even knew who he was.

Good. I hope they can the Gears of War movie too. That sounds like a disaster in the making. How are they gonna find people with necks and ankles THAT thick??? ;)

Dead Space might make a cool movie though.

Hahaha that was pretty funny. Dead space already has a movie but its a prequel to the game and its anime.

As for a live adaptation, if it were to be based off of the original game it would be hard seeing as how Isaac was by himself through most of it. The only actor I've seen that can carry a whole movie by himself in a horror setting is Will Smith(I Am Legend).....

....hmmmmm I might be on to something....

i would aplaud Dead Space but i can imagine them slapping on a taky cast.

i honestly cant think of another game i want to see adapted, i'd like a Silent Hill sequel though, that films decent.

Regardless of how awful the plot may have been, we all know that we'd have gone to see Kratos slashing the eyes out of cylopses on a big screen. I mean, I think that might be worth $7.

The problem is Hollywood is stuck in generic story mode, they are using the simplest structure available as opposed to bringing in writers with what at least resemble new and complex ideas. They would probably go, "Oh a video game movie?" "Let's have Kratos go save a princess and there can't be any gore because we need the PG13 audience"

Brett Ratner did OK with the X-men 3 Movie, so I thank god that GOW isn't being made by him. I do however am ashamed that Sony Pictures didn't say anything about it sooner, and same goes to Santa Monica Studios. These guys just don't get mediocre game-to-movie adaptations....=/

GoW is definitely 'superior entertainment' Ben. For them to make a movie out of two games that have surpassed that medium is a mockery of the source material. We hear the announcement. We want it be good. It never is...

well this is good news but heres some even better news SCEA released there official line-up for 2009 and in the link below you will see GOD of War 3 and MAG are both on there, i dont know the credentials of the site but it is via and offical SCEA press release and its not the only site to post this!

God of War would have to fleshed out quite a bit for it to be made into a movie (but not made by hollywood). If the story is not character driven then we would wind up with another shallow, cliche driven series of CGI drenched pictures. (I'm refering to 300. I didn't like that movie. At all.)

Video games aren't treated with the respect they deserve when movie adaptions are made. Like the Hitman movie. Who's idea was it to give Agent 47 feelings? He was cloned to be a cold blooded assassin dammit.

The whole greek mythology story are brilliant in the GoW series and are told really well through the dialogue and gameplay. If what we've seen and played in the game can be translated to a CGi movie done by the developers themselves, then I think it would work.
Lets face it, the cutscenes in the games have been better than their film adaptions.

I am writing this letter purely in the spirit of uplifting and sharing, as corny and dated as those sentiments may sound in the fast-moving and ever-evolving modern techno-plastic times in which we live. Primarily, I want to share with you my view that Mr. Ratner's rodomontades are as appealing as braces, acne, and a wooden leg at the senior prom. Let's get down to brass tacks: Mr. Ratner's hijinks were never about tolerance and equality. That was just window dressing for the "innocents". Rather, what we have been imparting to Mr. Ratner—or what he has been eliciting from us—is a half-submerged, barely intended logic, contaminated by wishes and tendencies we prefer not to acknowledge. I am not concerned with rumors or hearsay about him. I am interested only in ascertained facts attested by published documents and in these primarily as an illustration that Mr. Ratner must have some sort of problem with reading comprehension. That's the only explanation I can come up with as to why Mr. Ratner accuses me of admitting that the Eleventh Commandment is, "Thou shalt deny citizens the ability to become informed about the destruction that Mr. Ratner is capable of". What I actually said is that this is a lesson for those with eyes to see. It is a lesson not so much about Mr. Ratner's spiteful behavior but about the way that I have a hard time trying to reason with people who remain calm when they see Mr. Ratner cause an increase in disease, Dadaism, crime, and vice. So you see, I can no longer brook Mr. Ratner's spleeny, improvident long-term goals.

I think a prequel would do nicely maybe call it GHOST OF SPARTA: GOD OF WAR. It can go into the story of how he becomes the Ghost of Sparta and it can leave off where CoO begins. Hopefully they get someone like I don't know... James Camaron!!

I agree with u more, movie to game is horrible. game to movie can be possible, like the resident evil movies i liked them, or tomb raider another good movies. But i just can't see this being a good movie some can be possible other can't plus i'm kinda getting sick of seeing games turned into movies.
