Nielsen: PS3 Attracts Hardcore Group, Wii Attracts Young Boys
In news that most gamers wouldn't even consider "news," in that it falls under the "well, duh" category, a new survey gives us an idea of each console's largest demographic.
According to GameDaily, recent data collected from Nielsen Media Research tells us the Nintendo Wii "fares best with young boys and older women." The data, taken from last year's fourth quarter span, shows the Wii drags in the male 6-11 and the female 25-34 age groups, which should come as no surprise to...well, anyone. In addition, many more women over the age of 35 play the Wii far more often than either the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. As for what analysts and journalists often consider to be the "hardcore gamer demographic" (18-24), the Wii isn't anywhere near as popular. The PlayStation 3 attracts the oldest average age, which is expected due to "consumer brand loyalty since Sony dominated the market with the PS1," and for both males and females, it's the 18-24 group that flocks to Sony's machine. The 360 is somewhere in between: males aged 12-17 are most prominent and for females, it's the 25-34 group (same as the Wii). ...that 12-17 male statistic goes a long way towards explaining the greater level of immaturity we've experienced on Xbox Live, but it's not definitive.
Anyway, we doubt anyone will be all that shocked by these results. The Wii, which both Sony and Microsoft said they're not in competition with, basically caters to non-hardcore-gamers, which we've been saying from the start. Forgive us for being right. ;)
