Does The PSN Have A More Mature Userbase Than Live?

With the latest Nielsen data, we noted that while the majority of males aged 18-24 played on a PlayStation 3, the 12-17 demographic was most prevalent on the Xbox 360. This represents a possible answer for the online experiences I've had in the past few years.

Now, because I'm always required to throw in four and a half thousand disclaimers in almost every article these days, lest certain people freak out and start assigning inaccurate labels to the site and myself, let me just say this- obviously, that data was only taken during the fourth quarter of 2008. It's not definitive; no survey data is. Furthermore, I'm well aware that any evidence I'm presenting is personal, which is inherently flawed to begin with. But it will be interesting to see the responses...am I the only one who has had the following online experiences? It appears that the aforementioned age difference has confirmed - to some extent - my suspicion that Xbox Live is infested with far more nastiness, ugliness, and immaturity in general. I also hear obviously younger voices more often when playing Live, so that's another clear sign.

Has anyone else noticed this? It's almost 100% for me. If I play one hour on the PSN and one hour on Live, I will invariably hear far more in the way of disgusting commentary on the latter than I will on the former. They're all strangers, but on the PSN, I hear many more gamers who are both older and more civil. Of course, both online services have their share of useless crap (it's unavoidable), and I will freely admit that during the launch of PlayStation Home late last year, I really needed to turn my headset off. I will also admit I spend more time on the PSN, but oftentimes, that's because I weighed one experience against the other. I would say, "hmm, I can either listen to the petulant 10-year-old racist freaks who play Gears of War 2 all day, or I could play with some decent people who just want to kick back and have some fun with Resistance 2." For the record, I know more than a few people who have all had similar experiences.

Obviously, I would always recommend playing with friends and people you know in the first place, but that's not always possible. And as I simply don't have the motivation to take online gaming seriously, I just can't abide the swearing and trash-talking and worse that typically assaults my ears. It just seems to happen way more frequently on Live. So the only conclusion I can reach, from my own perspective mind you, is that the PSN crowd is simply older and more mature. Am I entirely off base?

Dude don't get piss at ben, he was just saying how he feels about his online experience, he wasn't bashing 360 or the wii. I do agree with u ben I have yet to run into children on psn r2, but when I played gears 1 and 2 I constantly run into potty mouths children. I did own a 360 but I gave it to my sister no game on the 360 kept me wanting more.

I've noticed that too. I think the default mics sensitivity is set too high for the official headset. Those things pick up everything.

IMO LIVE gamers seem entitled to speak since they got a mic with the console. PSN gamers seem to respect the mic more. Not everyone has one, on LIVE every ahole who can afford a console gets one-old and young.

Mics on LIVE are like opinions and assholes-every body has one and they use LIVE to make them heard.

Well I don't get on the psn to play games much(Live either lately...) but if its even a fraction less immature than Live then that wouldn't surprise me.

When I play on Live now I just avoid talking in my headset altogether unless I'm certain I'm with a mature group of people(which is less frequent) in order to avoid all of the racial slurs, screaming, and other noises that people's mics pick up.

I used to play the original gears every night. Part 2? Meh. It's kind of tiresome now to want to put up with the nonsense. But it hasn't been like that with l4d so maybe its gotten better?

In my opinion on Live people talk too much and on the psn people are kind of quiet(which is what I'd prefer unless you have something useful to say). I'm only speaking on the experience I had with unreal tournament 3(suck ass game) so I'm not sure.

Playstation has a more mature userbase period. There are barely any family-oriented games for the PS3. When compared to all the bloody, gorey, drug abusing, shoot 'em titles that are ever so popular with the playstation crowd, ita a landslide in favor of the mature titles. I don't know anyone younger than 15 who has a PS3. Everyone in my family or friends' family younger than 15 has a Wii, maybe an xbox here and there.

little big planet, folklore, hot shots golf. (non-violent)

if u go to psn store, there are lots of family oriented games.

if u go to HOME, there are also family oriented games. just kick back at the bowling alley with your family and play bowling for free.

My friend and I laugh just about everytime we get together online and play some matchmaking on Halo3. I'd say a good 60% of the time, there's some 12 year old (who could probably pass as a 9 year old) playing along with us. Always screaming, yelling, singing, telling us about their day at school, and so forth.

So I'd say the PS3 has more mature gamers based on the fact that, like Im The Man stated, there really aren't any family based games on the PS3 (which I like) and people don't spew random nonsense or talk in general either (also a plus).

Even so, sometimes when I'm on Live, I notice more trash talking, but then again, people do talk more on Live than PSN, but not a considerable amount more.

I think only the team based games people should talk and that's about it. Team Slayer on Halo3, for example, no one really needs to talk.. it's not a tactical game, so who gives? (at least that's the way I feel) Socom Confrontation and L4D however is important, although I have not had any experience with either of them yet..

I was just going to ask that. Any family oriented games on the 360 are multiplat and, therefore, on the PS3 too.

It's not like Microsoft Studios puts out a lot of family oriented exclusive games.

Besides, all those 12 year olds are apparently playing games (GOW, GOW2, Halo 3, GTA4, etc...) over their age limit on Live anyway.

I guess I'll find out for myself soon because I ordered two 13-month Live Gold cards when Amazon was selling them for around $30.

technically speaking psn should have a younger audience since its free compared to live which you pay for, then again you can buy an xbox for 200 bucks yet ps3 cost $400. maybe it depends on luck? or timing?...one thing is for certain id rather play with mature people than kids who have nothing to say about the game we're playing....

That was the argument in favor of Live vs. PS2 online, but it's mostly B.S.

Parents who let their spoiled kids play M-rated games will also pay for a Live subscription.

It's no barrier to immaturity, except that it's more expensive to re-up after being banned (which only really happens to cheaters, anyway).

Idk about Live, but I've found that most people are pretty nice on PSN.
Then again, I'm not so sure about Home. It's especially hard playing Home if you're female... \:
But, I was playing the RE5 demo the other day, and everyone was really nice, and worked well together. One person accidentally killed me though, so I was lying there in my own blood while this guy was shouting into his mic "DUDE, I KILLED YOU DUDE. I AM SOOOO SORRY DUDE"

Ahaha.

Online play on LBP is great. People are always nice, and it's so much fun to work together. I think LBP is rather unique in the way it brings people together just to have fun and not kill anything. [:

I have noticed that xbox owners seem to be very, very angry people. This might be the problem with Live. Lol.

its actually much easier for females to play HOME now. i see my sister go on HOME and no longer does she get crowded like how she did back in december. according to her, she actually misses those days.

there are many girls on HOME now and the attention of guys on HOME has attracted and encouraged many females to play HOME.

@Cobra Salad:

Your experience with that guy on the RE5 demo had me cracking up. In one of my very first Warhawk matches, there was a rather verbose guy on my team who was just constantly shouting encouragement and whatnot at our team the whole time. Could have been annoying had he not been so nice and funny. Anyways, I drove by him in a jeep and he's like "Arvis, wait wait!" so I went to back up and I accidentally backed over him and killed him. I was like "Oh man, I really didn't mean to do that!" and he just shouted "ARVIS! ARVIS WHYYYYYY!?!?!"

Good times.

i received a free month of live. i never went online with the 360 before because the ps3 lets me play games online for free.

the problem is... my free month of live is just collecting dust. after i downloaded all the 360 exclusive trailers and demos. there's just not much to do on xboxlive. i am replaying gears of war1 and i am planning to buy fable2 soon.

those nintendo wii style avatars are extremely gay, and i am playing xbox360 exclusive single player rpgs by myself cuz there's nothing else to do on the xbox360.

I have both, and I have been saying this for over a year now. At work my colleagues mostly play on Live and every once in awhile I'll login with them. I've tried to convince them that PSN is so much better to game on because there's a lot less squeaky voices, and it has SOCOM (which is really the only game I play religiously).

Maybe that's why though. SOCOM just seems to be a more intelligent shooter than most and takes a patience and strategy that most other shooters don't. In other words, SOCOM is not very kid friendly to begin with...OR...maybe it just seems that way because there's very few kids so teams can focus on more in depth aspects of gaming...not sure.

So I guess it begs the questions of which came first: The bullet or the gun? The can or the can opener? The puck or the stick? The chicken or the egg? The depth of game or lack of immature voices?

I definitely believe though that it's easier for kids to convince their parents to buy them a 360 because of the upfront costs involved between the two systems...which is why I really don't want to see the PS3 and 360 selling at the same upfront cost.

i think theres a good reason for this, every 360 that is sold comes with a headset, therefore every kid that has had one bought for christmas/birthday has a headset.

since one dosnt come with the ps3, and you have to go out and buy one, alot of kids dont have the money to spend on a headset, if they do have some money, there more likely to spend it on a game, not a headset, therefore the ppl who do have headsets on the ps3, are older ppl who have more free money to spend on their playstations.

Hey, i hate to say this but......

I think the main reason for this is because PS3 doesn't include a headset with their systems. If they did, we would see a lot of immature people just like live. Since these immature people probably wouldn't pay for a mic, this might just be the reason for the lack of them on psn compared to live.

Its not because ps3 players are overall more mature, its because of the headset not being included. I'd bet any amount of money that if they did, it would be just as bad as live

If you wanna get super technical, yes, because your other article showed how PS3 has an older and thus more "mature" audience.

HOWEVER, this strangely translates to real life even without ages involved, when my buds get together to play the box, (at least those that think it is the second coming of Christ) they get so retarded I wanna leave the room. I'm not saying I don't get excited or that I'm superior, just that when I meet PS3 lovers, they are all chill and cool about stuff. They know their gear and how to be a RockNRolla.

You name it Ben. As I stated in a post before, even native Americans may learn a bunch of new words playing in a x360 online game. To me as a German itīs sometimes nice to learn some new nasty words. I think it is also important to learn to swear like a trooper. Gives you a tool to get rid of your anger in a foreign country. :-) But anyway, I agree that the people on PSN are more sensible. We even have some nice American in our Socom German speaking room now. Like Hadrian from California. See, I think when you are somewhat over 35 like me you want to have fun and fair gameplay and maybe a nice smalltalk. Thatīs relaxed gaming. The thing I want, when I turn on my console. Itīs good XBox360 exists - keeps the kiddies away from the serious fun system. ;-)

Isn't the psn userbase more international than the live, wich brings up the language factor, where u have people who cant speak/express themselves in english would be quite.

No, there are always national communities as well. Joining an international gaming room means language is english. But itīs kinda stress to talk in a foreign language if you are not used to. Not only for Germans :-) Therefore we often play in national game rooms. And furthermore we have a special situation here in Germany - the eastern territories of Germany were part of communistic DDR before they were reunited with western germany in 1989. Pupils in the DDR were teached russian as second language not English like in western Germay, therefore most of the gamers who live in the eastern territories canīt speak English. But it seems to me like most Americans think, all people in the world speak English and just donīt want to speak, which is not true.

I definitely agree. I used to play Call of Duty 4 online on the Xbox 360, but now I stopped subscribing to Live, since everybody was hating on each other.

Nowadays I sometimes play COD4 on the PSN, and it's like talking to regular people, which is very nice.

I met this kid on Home, who's about 12 years but he doesn't act immature. There have been so many instances where people act stupidly & immmature on Home.
You're having a conversation with someone n another moron out of nowhere appears n stands between you two and starts doin' the RAVE or some other stupid dance.Overall seein' as usin' headphones in Home is not mandatory, you can easily see ppl typin' cuss words.

To me it depends,i think there a lotta 10-17 kids who own ps3 in Europe as well as the 18-24.Maybe Nielsen covered only the U.S.
I don't really know which is more immature.
Maybe ppl act maturely on psn with headphones but on Home is a different scenario.

Me too www. I met this kid who is like 12-13 or something and he's actually fun to play with. The only time he gets immature is if he has his other little friends to play with which is rare. I'm leaning toward what others have said about the mic not being included.

It's very very true, i couldn't agree more. And it's exactly what keeps me away from xbox.

I'm not really up for conversing with children who would rather throw about racial slurs and attack people for no apparent reason, than talk strategy for the game we're on or the next big game coming out.

It's actually funny because, i noticed this before even going on Live. Allow me to explain:

I remember being in college for a games development course. I was in a class where the majority were all younger than me, and had xbox 360s.

There was only 2 other people with the ps3 and 1 of the two was quite mature when it came to discussing anything. The rest of the class seemed to find their entertainment in acting like idiots and being immature. I decided from then, that i don't want to be playing online with these kind of people.

My conceived notion was made correct when i did get the chance to see live in action. It was exactly as expected. Full of everything you described in the above.

So no Ben, you're not alone and i know exactly what you're talking about, and you're 100% right.

I've met some real jerk-faces on PSN, especially on SOCOM. I actually will probably never play the game because of them. Little Big Planet's got some nice people. I don't think the age of the person is important as long as they are friendly.

One of the big reasons why theres lots of kids is cuz 360 is cheaper than PS3. and in school, its word-of-mouth that more friends would have 360s than PS3s and due to that word-of-mouth, kids would buy watever system cuz their friends have it, or they say "get (insert system) bud, cuz the(insert system)sucks."

I have had 3 cousins (ages 13 and under) who bought their 360 cuz of word of mouth and they dont like it as much (one out of the 3 rly likes it, the other 2 regretted they bought it.)

When they told me, I simply shrugged and said "ur loss. wat can i do? u cna always sell it, get some money back and buy ur system of choice."

I don't have a mic so I can't tell how mature the people really are. However, you visit PS Home and you can pretty much tell with you own eyes who the teenage males are; the ones trying to hit on girls and doing that lame running man dance. In the 360 camp, it's more obvious because everybody has a mic.

@ Ben and to everyone on here this been bugging me I've got a bad feeling about the psn always being mature think about it for one sec the reason we ps3 owners don't did with alot of potty mouths children is because the price tag of the ps3 $399. Now think about it if sony gives a ps3 a price cut and all the potty children will destroy our mature community on psn and please god save home from being destroy because of so much immaturity in home. Yeah a price cut would be awesome, but its a double edge sword meaning we have to deal with ranting children. Do u ben feel the same way and to everyone whats your take on this. Thank god kz2 is a team tactical clan so no one have to deal with immaturity in there squad.

when i had my xbox 360 (before i traded for the ps3) i noticed there were just way to many immature "squeekers" they just enoy me, espesually when the kids start yelling into the mic, just watch crazy halo kid on youtube, perfect example, i dont mean to bash any xbots but i find that the PSN is by far more mature then live, of course there are still the occasional squeekers but then everyone just tells em to shut up and eventually they stop.

Being Mexican on either system makes me a bullseye to racist comments, like "go to your side of the border f***ing wetback" and so.

But I must say that this is far more common on XBL, and nevertheless also XBL mexican players are far more rude than the PSN players.

Last month I stopped paying my XBL membership, and the true solution I found is to play with a bunch of friends and truly have fun. I avoid playing with strangers on either system or just turn the mic off.

I have played online with Resistance 1 and even when i did the killzone 2 beta people were and still are super nice and very appreciated. I very rarely hear the smack talk or the racist remarkes which to me should be said or heard on any online gaming but reality we do.
Xbox live where as i heard alot of complaints about children playing M rated games and smack talking and being rude the only thing you can do is turn the mic off.One thing i notcied is my husband plays WOW and i think the youngest player he has is a father son team the kid is like 13 but i have not once heard anything vulgar out of anyones mouth on WOW and i listen to it 4 hours during the night when he's playing, why is that? is WOW better monitored for trash talking? just curious. I find the differences in online gaming from live-psn-pc online very different and interesting.

I like how on the ps3, you'll get people commending you for a great kill or a good fight. Undoubtedly there are people who are the opposite, but i've never experienced positive feedback from a fellow Xbox live gamer.

And i think the price tag and word of mouth is a very valid point. If it were cheaper, parents would buy it for their child, and things would be different. Also most kids just follow whatever everyone else is doing. And in this case, it's buying an Xbox because "Everyone else has it" and "The ps3 sucks"

As much as I love playing Halo3 multiplayer, it's insane the amount of racist, sexist, and downright classless remarks people make online. I've experienced it in Halo3 more than any other game I've played on Live and that includes the other 2 popular shooters(Gears2 and Call of Duty4). I have CoDWaW for PS3 and it's pretty quite.

While I don't really play many games online, last week I played halo2 on an xbox360 at a friend's house which was the first time i even played anything on an xbox360 and i must say coming from the PoSN experience I'm used to on my PS3 the xbox live network is amazingly smooth. there were ten players in the game and i don't recall so much as a bump or lag in the half hour or so i was playing. compare this to my few experiences on the PoSN: 27MB patch taking over 2 hours to download and Flower I think took like 12 hours (I checked my Internet connection at one point and was able to get 1700KBs from newsgroups at the same time so no, it wasn't my FIOS connection), trying to get to the LBP community and being told it can't connect to the server at 5pm EST, etc, etc. Other times I can download a patch or game very quickly so I know it's not my PS3 or network configuration, it's just what I've come to call the 'PoSN' (you know what that stands for). Again I'd gladly pay money for the PoSN if it made it usable as right now I would never buy a PS3 game that was based around online play as it's so unreliable.

12 hours, come on mate, you cant seriously expect people to believe that. if it was 12 hours, then it cant be the psn surely?, its got to be something to do with your internet. Ive never had anything (no matter what it has been) take anything longer than about 40 mins or so (and thats when theres been a demo just released or something, like killzone2) (Im from uk, was on 4mb connection, been upped to 10mb in last few months, dont know if that could be causing the big difference, but i doubt it) .I just dont see any differencve bewteen the PSN and live these days, unless your talking about cost.

If i were to step back for a moment, I would say it depends on what application (game, software, etc) you were comparing them too.

I play CoD 4,5 on ps3 and hear constant obscenities and ugliness. I'm sure (haven't played it) it's the same the CoD games on XBL.

Now if it were some sort of online mature RPG of some sorts, then i'd say the communications would be more friendly.

From what I've heard on my mates 360, the swearing from the high pitched voices is intensive. But then again, on the PSN, especially on CoD, the 'swear-guments' (where they try and fit as many insulting swears into a single breath as humanly possible) are terrible. I think the reason that the 360 has the younger ages is because it's the parents paying for the console, so they will get the cheapest on face value, even though live will boost the price significantly. Just a thought.

well put it this way, listening to people in games, and apart from a single garish friend of mine, almost everyone is nice. and i've even formed teams and groups within the game to do things, especially FPSs, its fun in a squad of people you've just met and helping eachother. and burnout is fun too.

My PS3 online experience (mostly Warhawk) has been good. I've had a few occassions of people being douche-y in over 100 sessions, but mostly people are (too) quiet (a fault which I share).

I was in one game where people were being very helpful to some n00bs, giving advice, etc. I miss the Rookie servers.

The most annoying thing I experienced was two guys having a conversation as if they were on a private phone line (dudes--fourteen other people here listening to your pointless banter!), making it impossible to coordinate actions.

i think the mature user base is simply down to a couple of things. ....

1. cost of the system..if its more expensive, then more parents will buy there kids the cheaper system (if there convinced theres no difference)

2. Blue ray player...lot of peeps will buy a ps3 for gaming as well as blue ray player. if you buy a blue ray player, your likely to have a fat tv also (more adults will be in to this / entertainment system)

im not convinced the head set has a lot of difference, even if it came free, you wouldnt find as many adult gamers using it as much as kids.

That is not to say there arnt any imature kids on psn. I have an issue with some one at the moment. Blew this guy up with a grenade by accident in BFBC (he was on my own team), got all sorts of "retard, deuche,Fag" comments over the air and then trying to consatntly TK me....now, because i didnt respond to any of it and just left the game, i then get messages sent to me...again, all "retard, duech,Fag" related insults (spotting a trend here anyone?)
ive named it "RDF syndrome" for now.
Thing is, I have a brother in law that will use my psn account if he has a go on the ps3 when im not in. Obviously, no point in him getting a load of sh*t, so I thought, I would send this idiot a quick message explaining some simple facts of life.......Big mistake, was like spraying WD40 on an open fire, now i get same insults every other bleedin day, put the little f*cker on the ban list and told him so, now i get new invites with same insults (not sure there from his other psn's or his mates or something). ..its like having my own psn stalker ;-) so i guess my point is.. you get more mature users on psn, but it only takes one floater in the pool to f*ck it up for everyone else.

I think it is entirely the other way around.
I have friends on the PSN that are 10 years old. And every one of my friends on Live are older than 20.
The reason for the "More mature voices" is the voice changer.
Almost every person under 17 uses the voice changer. I sometimes use it for fun. (I love making my voice sound like I'm using helium)

It's probably just me, but I think that there are younger people on the PS3.

the reason why live has younger people and psn has older people is cuz parents dont wanna by their kids a computer. they wanna by their kids a cheap piece of crap that will babysit their kids so they can watch their soap operas and do wutever. the reason psn has older and mature people is cuz they no wuts better and they have the money to buy it. if ur gunna by a game system, at least by 1 that wont die next month
