Sony: PS3 Passes 21 Million Sold
Sony announced today that it would launch its popular hardware in Latin America, and included in that press release was their up-to-date PlayStation 3 sales tally.
Sony has confirmed that the worldwide sales of the PS3 have reached 21.3 million, with about 17 million registered PlayStation Network accounts. The former number is encouraging and mostly expected, but we have to remember that the latter statistic likely includes duplicate accounts and handheld (PSP) accounts. The only good news is that if you're going to compare it to Xbox Live, the number for Live will almost certainly include duplicate accounts as well. As for the console sales competition, not much has changed in the past few months; the 360 is around 27 million (depending on which source you use) and the Wii is at...oh, maybe ten trillion. Well, it's certainly true that the non-gaming crowd - those that would own a Wii, of course - is larger than the gaming crowd, right? There have been signs of a crack in Nintendo's armor, though, as recent tallies showed a steep 33% decline in Wii sales, likely caused by the almost complete lack of new software. This may continue (can anyone think of any must-have games for the Wii in 2009...or beyond?), allowing Microsoft and Sony to continue to close the gap.
But anyway, 21.3 million is the current total, so don't go exaggerating it. Considering it was at only a few million two years ago at this time (terrible launch, that thing had), it's a pretty damn good number.

The problem though is that their software sales are still so much higher. So, even if we assume there are actually only about 21mill 360 owners, it makes software sales on the PS3 look horrible.

Also, Microsoft presents statistics for units shipped, not units sold.
I would guess the actual number of working 360s and working PS3s in peoples' houses is probably much closer than a ~6 million unit difference.
As for software sales, the worldwide totals are usually relatively close except for some games (mostly shooters)--and some PS3 games outsell the 360 versions.
People forget that NPD numbers only reflect U.S. (N.A.?) sales, where there IS a larger disparity between total 360s and total PS3s.

I mentioned in my post (associated with that particular article), that Sony should look at something like a PS3 "Advanced" model... doubles up on Cell cores and includes 1 GB of RAM...
So essentially games made for the PS3 model can be played on both the standard edition model and the "advanced" mode. If the game is loaded into the "advanced" model it could make use of the extra ram or cores... whatever it needs... but essentially backward compatibility would not be an issues... development would the same... quick and easy (if you look 2 to 4 years from now) as developers will know the hardware very well... and you would have specs in an "advanced" model that should out perform a new updated 360 model...

-We can then judge which's the best console.
-There will be no i-released-first-so-i-got-the-upper hand BULL!
I don't think a gaming body will be embraced though but picture it,everything will be fair and sweet!

They should make a advanced version and it wont be as expensive in the start because the tech in the ps3 right now is very advanced but it was like having a jet pack as a car back in 2006 so now would cheaper
or they could make a silver, aqua and slim one
LOL
it is a great idea though

Back then, however, Sony's PR team was good; and they had people waiting for the PSX and PS2 to come out before they upgraded to a then-next-gen system. Of course Sony's marketing/advertising was much better back then with a multitude of cool, hip, irreverent ads.
Nowadays, Sony's PR/marketing/advertisng is virtually nonexistent. There is some truth to the anti-Sony statement that Sony became complacent this gen and rested a little too much on their laurels.
Sony let M$ft out-Sony Sony this gen and become the cool, hip console of choice.
It, however, is not too late for Sony to turn it around. They just need some cool, hip, irreverent advertising for the PS3.

Let us add to that loss by giving away HOME for free (or at least the major components and free areas available currently) and the cost of running PSN... and the loss widens even more... I am positive that business done through PSN solely does not cover all costs yet; I may be wrong though!

Microsoft's tactic of preventing certain games (AC6, JRPGs) from appearing on the PS3 for the last two years hasn't earned them much traction in the Japanese market, but it has slowed PS3 sales (and likely driven Wii sales).
Eventually, though, Wii owners will want to get a current-gen system and most won't buy a 360.
When FFXIII hits (if it ever does), PS3 sales in Japan will likely skyrocket.

It has been turned on maybe 6 times.
Last time was 'cause I wanted to play mario kart. Guess what.. You can not hop to dig into the corners. LAME! Good thing I bought it used... back to GS, BACK!
Freaking thing is like a party virus, you get to the party, play it, and sware it was "Kinda" cool. Then you buy it and it loses all levels of fun after 20 minutes.
Pretty sad even a 6 year old knows it's lame but that happens only after you buy it. He now has one of my old PS2's and could not be happier.

Of course they help for a few months, but then the 360 outsells the PS3 after the hype for the games die down, and it's back to how it was before.
I actually don't think the PS3 will catch up to the 360, until MS releases another system.
I've seen the numbers the PS3 would have to do, and how people would have have to stop buying the 360 completely for it to catch up anytime soon.

PS3 sales have been steady and fairly good for the last year-and-a-half (since its first price drop). They got beat handily over the holidays here in North America, but didn't lose ground over the year.
A price drop would certainly help, but the trends show the PS3 passing the 360 (worldwide) sooner rather than later, unless Microsoft manages another price cut (which seems unlikely given that they must be losing even more than Sony per unit).

it seems really cool and im downloading the plug-in as we speak but apparently after u get the plug-in wherever u go on the net a helghast soldier could be waiting for u whether ur checkin e-mail or surfing or sitting on PSXextreme.com. the cursor becomes a cross-hair and the browser becomes an online battle field, and i guess even if u miss your bullets will tear through whatever is on your browser this should be great fun! There is multipliers, headshots, and explosives, u can invite friends to join the fight, which means more multipliers, and the ability to heal each other if they have the game and there browser open, and its keeps track of stats for prizes and such, the link below has all the details! well sony is doing something to get this game going i think it'll do great!
Here is the link where i found this at and there is a link there to download the game as well if u dont go to the site i posted above...

Unlike MS....I don't hate MS, it's just I don't like the wat they do things. It's like they know something's gonna be wrong, but they continue anyway half-shrugging themselves that everything's gonna be fine.

The only game i can say that i'm looking forward to on the Wii is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals Echoes of time and Crystal Bearers. I see where people are worried though about the Wii, its cool to see everyone have it and then you get it play it for a few hours and say ok i'm done, gamecube was the same way. So far i've been lucky that i have found oodles of games to play on the Wii that will last a pretty long time.
Less than a Week for Killzone2 And 1 week till my birthday Oh getting excited!!!

So it all depends on what you need the system for. Hopefully, PSN will catch up with XBL soon. (In terms of service and patches/updates, not the stores/market places)

Answer me this?
Isn't the "fact" that the PS3 has less RAM than the 360 a misnomer, i.e., incorrect?
The 360 has 512MB of overall RAM, yes?
The PS3 has 256MB dedicated to the CPU and 256MB for the GPU. This equals 512MB TOTAL. No?
Am I missing something when people keep stating the PS3 has less ram because I don't believe it does.
The PS3 has its RAM split between the CPU and GPU while the 360's RAM is left up to the developer to assign.
Right?

Yes, Orvis, you've got it right. This is why 360 games that look beautiful are usually pretty simplistic (Gears) and why games like Mass Effect have ATROCIOUS pop-in. Sure, it gives devs more freedom to allocate the processing power wherever they want, but devs tend to unbalance in favor of one aspect over the other.
