Daily Momentous Event: We Saw A Killzone 2 TV Commercial

No, seriously. Hand to God. I did. Not 15 minutes ago, I watched in fascination as a maximum-hyped PlayStation 3 exclusive was advertised on the magic box that displays pictures from all over the world. ...yeah, I was surprised, too.

Earlier this month, Sony swore that Killzone 2 would have a massive advertising budget and we'd be seeing the game every time we blinked. As far as I can tell, this so-called marketing blitz hasn't really happened - at least so far as TV ads are concerned - and I was happy to see this one today. If you haven't laid eyes on it yet, it's kinda similar to Korn's "Freak on a Leash" music video; if you've seen it, you know exactly what to expect. A single bullet in slow-mo flies across an uproarious battlefield, eventually zoning in on one target. In all honesty, I think it would've rocked to have actually had "Freak on a Leash" as the background music; how bad-ass would that be? As it stands, the commercial is pretty good, although Sony continues to focus more on the artistic than the in-your-face with their worldwide ads. I keep thinking people will remember the ad, but they may not remember the name of the game...which of course is the cardinal sin of advertising. We'll see.

This commercial should've been in active circulation three weeks ago, but hey, at least it's here for the week of the game's launch. Now, they just need to up the frequency; I saw way more MGS4 and GTAIV commercials on TV during their launch periods, so let's step it up, Sony!

canada is a great country, wish I lived there :P
to return to the topic, i've seen 3 ads i think on UK tv. 2 of those were the same ad last week, and I saw what looked like a new one yesterday. Still not good enough though

I saw that one Saturday night. I thought it was awesome. Not quite the media blitz the spoke of, but it's a start.

"War. Perfected."

I thought that was good.

Joystiq wrote that there's some kind of Killzone 2 web game, where Helghans appear on whatever website you're viewing and you shoot them down. Seemed pretty cool.

Yeah the browser game is actually pretty sweet there is a thread about it in the forum trying to get a squad together. I would be down for it but I think that they spent a lot of money putting that together and honestly that is more viral than blitzing.

Dude leave Fabi alone, at least he said that "HE" does not think its a good commercial. He was stating his opinion, which is allowed! And he did it in a way that is a lot better than most people on here do, he said he thinks and did not just say it was a bad commercial and pass it off like its a fact or something. No need for the immature barbi comment, you only make yourself look like an idiot.

I'm sorry, but Sony sucks at advertising. I've seen one ad for KZ2, and it's the stupid ad with "war. perfected." at the end. Yes, it's a cool ad, but I doubt that that is what, at least Americans are looking for. Inform the people that don't know what the game is about, tell them how good the graphics are, tell them the score the game has recieved in every review, just don't show a short movie that looks like it's prerendered (even though it's not, but how do you know that?) and nothing else. They can have one of these types of commercials, but have another one that is more informative running simultanously. I really think this will be bad for Sony and KZ2's sales...

Like the end of the demo does. If they showed the end of the demo as one of their commercials on TV then that would be effective use of advertising.

For all those that don't know the end of the demo has some game play footage, a nice classical sounding melody playing, and review quotes and scores and it is just fantastic to give you a feel of what the game is and what it is about.

You should download the ad from the store (US) and play it in slow motion on your PS3, it looks even better.

At least the UK ad shows in-game footage and says "actual gameplay footage" so there is no doubt in people's minds what this game actually looks like.

@ MexicanFighter - WHOA! How was that me hating?! I've been waiting for Killzone 2 anxiously for soooo long, and can't wait to play it.

@Frenchy - Thanks, that's exactly what I meant, TO ME it doesn't feel like that commercial will make people want to go out and get it. Maybe if they woulda have put "This is REAL TIME" before the commercial, then everyone would understand.

And how does that show how good the gameplay is?

If someone showed me the scene of Raiden and Vamp fighting hand-to-hand (it's all done with the in-game engine), I would think MGS4 is all about that, it doesn't show how good gameplay is at all. It might be rendered in real-time, but it's just a video, not of actual gameplay.

I'm sorry if I ever come off as "hating", I guess I'm just jaded, I've been playing games for a very long time. I don't think I have ever really insulted anyone though, so relax, it's just an opinion.

And I'm not always gonna be praising Sony just because. I love my PS3 and own every Sony system, but I wont take their word as gospel either.

@Gogaku - Exactly what he said.

It could happen. I can see Halo Wars selling a gazillion copies for two reasons:

1) Name Recognition - Plenty of people will buy the game simply because it says "Halo" on the box.

2) Fanboyism - Most Xbots would LOVE to be able to brag that Halo Wars outsold KZ2. Buying a copy is just their way of cheering for their team.

Honestly, come Friday, I'll be too busy slaughtering Helghans to care.

commercial is great with that said... supposably targets and wal-marts are putting KZ2 on the shelves today. i have a buddy in yreka, Ca and he called me to tell me that the wal-mart there had KZ2 on the shelf the funny things is it wasnt in the comp. i dont know much beyond that i will later tonight though i asked him to drop buy and pick me up one if he could so i can have it tonight!
also a few post in forums and such one from gamespot in particular about target smashing the release date which store and how broad it is idk, but some 1 from gamespot took a pic of the game on the shelf with its 59.99 price tag! interesting stuff! I wonder what sony could do to the consumer or retailer for this if anything i mean the game was sold what now?

Haven't seen any tv ads yet. But I just convinced another one of my friends to buy a PS3 based on the demo. :)

I've seen it once maybe twice. They need to show a commercial with alot of action in it to catch people's eye.

I've seen the "bullet" commercial 20+ times and I don't consider my tv watching to be extreme. BTW I'm in Illinois so unsure if it varies by region.

Haven't seen any ads on my ol' antenna tv (5 channels). However, I did see my first Street Fighter IV commercial today.

I've seen a fair few KZ adverts now on TV. All on digital though, not terestrial.

NO TV Spot in Germany so far. It isnt that easy anyway to show a spot advertising a shooter game in Germany at all. Germans know, what Im talking about. But Im sure, that Ill see the spot on internet soon. Freak on a Leash, eh? Great! I also like this intro of the Demo using classic music for videos audio. I dont think Sony will make any public advertisement for Killzone 2 here in Germany. Its not the way they dont want to, but theyll be not allowed to - not in f...ing "We have to protect minors from any violence scenes on TV in Germany" Germany.
Hell, over 70% of Germanys population is mature, just broadcast spots like this after ten, when every minor is in bed (lol)
Whatever, Ill move to Vancouver in two or three years with my wife.

Ahhh, but there's lots of nudity on German television. I'll take tits over violence any day!

Yeah, youre right. Kind of weird isnt it? But theres also nudity in Canadian TV or did I have "special" TV while I was there the last three times? In fact theres too much nudity in German television. Youre growing bored looking at all those naked boobs and heinies. Better have some uncut "The Hidden" or "Predator" in afternoon TV. That would rock! Well like allways - you dont know what you miss until youre aware you miss it :-)

Oh and Troy, nudity in TV is not always fun. Imagine following all evening scene in a German household. You sit there on your sofa, relaxed and of course with a beer or a whisky in your hand watching the boring stuff, swearing about that the movie youre watching was cut to dead by the censorship. Then some of those nudity spots come up. Boring! But then you get it. An old(I mean old like 60 years) women - naked (imagine 60 years old boobs or should I say tubes?)is showing up holding her really fat ass in the camera. Moaning "Grandma will do it right to you" in your face. I tell you bro, it takes a lot not to puke right over your living room table.

They allow 60 year old boobs on television? That's just wrong, man.

I do recall being desensitized to the nudity after a while though. "Oh, geez, another 911 911 commercial!" Who the hell is Theresa Orlowski anyway? lol

Still, first time I saw a set of tits in an ice cream commercial I was like, "I love this country!"

Yeah. I guess Sony's idea of heavy advertising is once a week on a highly rated genre show.

I've only seen the ad once, and I TiVo all the genre shows out there and several of the top nongenre shows.

Anyway, the good news is that I was in Book Off in Manhattan yesterday looking through their used PS2 imports (picked up eight games for about $90) and overheard two women talking.

One said she should pick up the PS3 so her son would have both the 360 and PS3. The other woman, who has a PS3, encouraged her to do so and pick up Killzone 2.

Of course, I had to concur with her and proferred my own opinion, agreeing with her that K2 is awesome. She, in turn, said everyone in her office has preordered the game.

Anyway, on a related note, I read somewhere that the K2 bullet commercial will be available as a "playable" PSN download, meaning we'll be able to control the camera, panning and zooming.

Sony wants to prove the commerical was real-time footage.

Nice commercial, but nowhere near the "massive media-blitz" they were talking about. But for Sony, this probably is pretty massive considering they haven't advertised worth a sh** for any of their other games (excluding MGS4).
