Chinese Source: $100 PlayStation 3 Price Cut By May

The rumors of a PlayStation 3 price drop continue to circulate, despite Sony's unwavering stance that there are no plans whatsoever to issue a hardware cut any time soon.

According to Gaming Front, the latest piece of evidence comes from Chinese gaming site Hexun.com, which states that a $100 price reduction is headed our way in either April or May of this year. There's no way of knowing if they cite an official source - anyone out there speak Chinese? - but let's just say it's unlikely. We're guessing it's yet another mysterious "inside source," which doesn't really help the veracity of the report, especially considering the fact that all Sony executives and representatives refuse to comment on the subject. As for the additional rumor that this cheaper PS3 will be without a Blu-Ray player, that seems even less probable and isn't mentioned in this Chinese report. Just out of curiosity, though, if you take Blu-Ray out, what will you put in to the machine? PS3 titles are on Blu-Ray discs, yes? Well, whatever. We doubt you're going to see a BD-less PS3 any time soon, but a price drop isn't entirely out of the question. It may be too early, but you never know... April/May isn't far off, so we won't have long to wait, but Sony sure as heck won't do anything but deny it.

If there's going to be any price cut at all, we're still saying it'll be announced at E3. That's the best you can hope for, in our opinion.

If true this is good news for anybody who still doesn't own a ps3 but to me its nothing II don't care II already got mine lol and its a 60gb lauch version anybody down to play me in some killzone 2.

They are probably keeping quiet about a pricecut because they are hoping KZ2 will shift consoles. If people know a pricecut is coming they might wait til then.


As for a blu-rayles PS3, thats just stupid. It would be more like a super PS2 than I PS3. Until ALL games are available to download this wont happen. Could you imagine the size of HDD you would need to accommodate a half decent game library. I know MS are thinking about this but when you HAVE TO buy their HDD its no wonder $$$$$.

These constant "RUMORS" of a price drop, need to stop. This is definitely NOT helping sales. If Sony plans to cut the price at all, why would they say ANYTHING to ANYONE about it. Think about it for a moment; they want to sell systems NOW not MONTHS FROM NOW.

These "rumors" are only succeeding in keeping a person that is on the fence about purchasing a PS3 from doing just that, because of the "if I have waited this long to get one I can wait a few more months and save $100" mentality.


If I were a competing company I would leak "inside info" of my competition dropping their price every chance I had. Think about when the 360 price drops happened, the leaks happened when sales adds were leaked, Microsoft didn't let the info out MONTHS and MONTHS in advance.

Bottom line: DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!

If a price cut were to happen, I would be surprised if it were by that much. Regarding the other part of the rumor, let's just say it's an insult to the intelligence of every psxextreme regular.

I was thinking of buying another ps3 for my bedroom. That way I could play in the bedroom or living room if i wanted. If they drop the price, I'd definitely welcome it, but I don't want Sony to hurt financially just to reduce the price to be competitive. And I hope they don't sell anything larger than an 80gb hdd. I can upgrade my own for so much cheaper. I just swapped my 60gb for a 320gb for $70, took 5 mins. Thank you Sony!

you can also just grab ur cables pull em out of the living room tv, grab ur ps3, and take it to ur bedroom! its easy, i do it all the time, takes 3 minutes

what if the materials(metal, plastic) that make up the ps3 are becoming cheaper because of the economy's situation? the CHINESE should know about it since they make everything. maybe less work means that the factory workers are paid less but still keep working because they have to eat.

E3 is on June 2-4. Sony will probably do their usual $100 price drop of the 160 GIG and discontinue the 80 GIG. Just like what they did with the 40 GIG. I have seen a lot of stores offer $50 gift cards for buying a 160 GIG or 80 GIG.

I dunno, Ben. If all the news is is a mostly unbelievable rumor, I wouldn't even bother publishing it. Do you understand what I mean? We will definitely be frequenting your site, so you shouldn't have to crank out an insane number of stories to increase your site traffic.
